00:00This is all the Miami Dolphins' fault.
00:03It's not Tyreek's fault because I would argue a lot of us in society,
00:09we get kind of hammered for doing things that everybody would do,
00:13similar to what Juwan Jennings is doing right now.
00:16If you could ask for more and would get more, wouldn't you do it?
00:21Wouldn't you do it?
00:22Yep.
00:23Okay?
00:23If you do hit that lotto tomorrow night, wouldn't you take it?
00:28I would argue you don't deserve it.
00:30All you did was go to a gas station with two $1 bills.
00:34What the hell do you deserve a billion dollars for?
00:37You didn't start a company.
00:39You're not a real estate magnate.
00:42Like, what'd you do?
00:43But you'll take it, won't you?
00:45You'll take it.
00:46And you won't start handing all of it out to everybody you know.
00:49Maybe a little bit.
00:50You and I do have an agreement.
00:51But anyway, you get what I'm saying.
00:55And so I don't blame Tyreek Hill.
00:58For getting $30 million a year.
01:01I blame the Miami Dolphins.
01:03The same way I blame the Cleveland Browns for taking the quarterback market where they did.
01:08With Deshaun Watson.
01:10And it caused owners around the league to collude.
01:13To try to get the quarterback market to depress just a little bit.
01:18To not have to fully guarantee four and five year contracts for players in an incredibly physical sport.
01:24But that one doesn't offend us as much.
01:27Because we all damn well know the importance of the quarterback.
01:30But I think we've got a very healthy debate to have today about the importance of the wide receiver.
01:37And I want to give credit where it's due.
01:40You want to know where this conversation started?
01:42Tell me.
01:42My daughter.
01:43We're driving around today.
01:45And we're sampling a little bit of 95-7 the game.
01:48We're running some errands together.
01:50And she's a huge Niner fan.
01:52And she wanted to say a thing or two, dammit, about Juwan Jennings.
01:55But she also wanted to understand what exactly is going on.
01:59And she'll, on one breath, go, well, they need to pay him.
02:04I love Juwan Jennings.
02:06I said, right.
02:08Does he deserve more than Christian McCaffrey does?
02:12And she goes, well, no.
02:15Okay.
02:15Let's talk about this.
02:17And let's have an open conversation about what's actually going on.
02:20It is my belief that over the last four to five years in the NFL,
02:25wide receivers have all gotten their brains scrambled.
02:28And I say this, again, this is no shot at Juwan.
02:31I've spent the last three weeks supporting his effort, at least,
02:35to try to get more money off of what he did last year.
02:39But I thought it was pretty revealing yesterday to talk to Tim Kawakami
02:43and some things came out of his mouth that I think made all of us go,
02:47whoa, whoa, an extension for $20 million a year?
02:53What on earth are you?
02:55And, again, I don't know that to be true, but I trust him.
02:57Sure.
02:58What are we talking about?
03:01What are we talking?
03:02$20 million a year for Juwan Jennings in the midst of Brandon's 30
03:09and Ricky Pearsall being a first-rounder?
03:11What are we talking about?
03:11Yeah, he's not looking at it in those terms.
03:14But if you're not, like, Juwan's not thinking, well,
03:17you drafted Ricky and Ayuk's making 30, so I can't ask for 20.
03:20He's looking at what he did and where that ranks among last year.
03:25And last year he had one of the 20 best receiving years in the National Football League.
03:31So you're thinking, all right, get me one of the 20 best contracts because I just earned it.
03:36And that, unfortunately, is not the way it works.
03:38And you can blame Miami.
03:40You can blame Cleveland for Deshaun Watson.
03:43Bad organizations make bad decisions.
03:45I look at other things like Brock Purdy.
03:48Brock Purdy could have gone the Brandon Ayuk route and said,
03:51I want to reset the market.
03:53I'm that guy.
03:54And Devontae Smith and Philly could have done the same thing.
03:57But both players basically said, yeah, what they offered me is enough.
04:01I don't need to be that guy.
04:03So for me it comes down to a couple different things.
04:06One is you've got to know your personnel and know how they're going to go about their free agency
04:12or their contract negotiations.
04:14And that's where I think the Niners are caught off guard by Juwan Jennings.
04:17Well, here's what I've been thinking about a lot.
04:21And the Niners are complicit.
04:24You're absolutely right.
04:26You know what I mean?
04:26And the Niners are part of this.
04:28So I can blame the Miami Dolphins,
04:30but then we have to subsequently blame every other team
04:33who's given their wide receiver $30 million to $40 million.
04:37The Lions, you're complicit.
04:39The 49ers, you're complicit.
04:40The Bengals are completely...
04:42The Vikings.
04:43The Bengals have taken the baton from the Dolphins and worsened it.
04:48They're annoying all of their defensive stars
04:51and have two receivers being paid in the top 11,
04:55including the number one.
04:57The number one, Jamar Chase, who has broken the $40 million year mark in terms of average annual value.
05:05But this is something that got pointed out to me last year by Ephraim, my Sunday partner.
05:11And I want to share it with you and get your reaction to it.
05:14So think about what happened last year.
05:17The wide receiver market is going through the roof for a number of years.
05:22Meantime, what's happening to the running back market?
05:26The running back idea was, well, these guys break down quicker and they are more replaceable.
05:33Shout out anyone with the last name Shanahan.
05:36We could just put pretty much anybody back there and get a whole lot of production.
05:40So whenever that running back is up for a big extension, we'll just kindly move on
05:46and we will replace that player.
05:48So let's look at five players around the league and look at what happened.
05:53The Titans didn't want Derrick Henry.
05:55He goes to the Ravens.
05:56The Raiders didn't want Josh Jacobs.
05:58He ends up on Green Bay.
06:00Cincinnati didn't want Joe Mixon.
06:02He goes over to Houston.
06:04The Giants did not want Saquon Barkley.
06:10I mean, who would?
06:11And he goes to the Eagles and the Packers, who both were on the receiving end of Jacobs,
06:17were also guilty of not wanting Aaron Jones.
06:20And he goes to the Minnesota Vikings.
06:23And what are the five receiving a good veteran running back teams all have in common?
06:30See you in January.
06:32All five of them.
06:33Sure.
06:34All five of them.
06:35But the Bengals are out here going, look at our receivers.
06:39Cool.
06:40Cool story.
06:41Look at your receivers.
06:42You're out.
06:43And the Niners are over here going, look at our Debo.
06:46Brandon.
06:47We're going to have a great year.
06:49And you go 6-11.
06:51And what happened also in the midst of 6-11, your superstar running back got hurt
06:57and it cratered everything that was going on around the team.
07:01Yes, it wasn't the only reason, but it was a big one.
07:04So, man, to me, I don't know if this is what's going on in the Niners' minds right now,
07:09but this whole thing's out of whack and somebody needs to stop it.
07:13Jawan Jennings is not in this conversation.
07:15No, he's not an A-list in the league.
07:17He's not a B-list.
07:18He's a C-plus receiver in league circles.
07:21And so, if you want to get that A-minus or that B-plus money, it's just not happening
07:26when you already pay Brandon Ayuk.
07:28And if you want to go through the receivers who make the most and how their teams do,
07:32like Jamar Chase, the Bengals went to one Super Bowl, and that was before he was making
07:38that money.
07:38And Justin Jefferson, now you've got a rookie quarterback.
07:41And Garrett Wilson at No. 5, I don't know where the Jets are going to be this year,
07:45but probably not a Super Bowl threat.
07:47So, all these teams that are paying their receivers big money, it's not like you are
07:52on the doorstep of a title.
07:54And the interesting one, though, is Philly.
07:56And Philly won the Super Bowl with two high-paid wide receivers, but they kind of did it without
08:02really needing them to both have huge games.
08:04One of them was reading books on the sideline.
08:06Totally, yep.
08:06And very annoyed, by the way, and outspoken about it.
