An elderly female shopkeeper is nursing injuries at hospital today, four days after she and her sister were beaten and tied up during a home invasion.

TV6 News was told that neighbours who realised something was wrong, called the police and quick response by officers of the St Margaret’s police station, led to the arrest of the lone suspect and rescue of the elderly women.

Today, our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh spoke with the neighbours who contacted the police and tells us what happened.

00:00At 4.30 a.m. on Friday, as Claxton Bay residents made their way to work, a 29-year-old bandit from the community was breaking into the home of a 68-year-old woman's house.
00:14She and her visiting 62-year-old sister were asleep when the suspect entered through the upstairs back door, a noise which alerted neighbours to what was happening and which prompted their calls to police.
00:26One of the sisters, she was gagged. Well, first he hit her, then he gagged her and tied her. All right? The way he slapped her down, she got bruises on her knees. The other sister, he tied her. He dragged her down steel steps.
00:48Days later, the elder sister remains at hospital in severe pain, a swollen face, blood-shut eyes, fractured ribs and a bleed in the brain.
01:01Neighbours say the woman's husband died years ago and a small shop is her means of income. So despite being robbed in the past, she kept it open.
01:10Young people, they're not looking for the work outside there, but they want to go and get free money. And the thing is, that's a little pile. You tell me what money that's bringing in.
01:19The neighbours say within minutes of their calls, police officers from the St. Margaret's police station responded and caught the bandit as he was trying to flee the scene.
01:30She says young people need to realise that if they live by the sword, eventually, that is how they will meet their end.
01:37This is crazy. I mean, innocent people, I mean, criminals making innocent people become criminals too, you know.
01:44Because when you see things like that, when you go in the hospital and see her, right, the first thing come to your mind is, why you didn't gun him down?
01:53Just your thoughts on the current stand-up ground conversation.
01:57Honest? Empty the clip.
01:59While they now pray for justice and the woman's recovery, they encouraged people to always look out for each other.
02:07In the first place, we're supposed to be our brother's keeper, whether we like it or not.
02:12Because, I mean, they come for you today, you could be the next tomorrow.
