An elderly woman was killed during a brutal home invasion in Barrackpore overnight.

When our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh visited the scene this morning, relatives said there was never a fear of such an attack in the community...

...and they are now left shocked and distraught over the killing.

It's why they are also calling for more police patrols in the area.
Transcript
00:00Four days shy of her 76th birthday, Tara Bridgmohan was found bound, gagged and murdered in her bed
00:09during what police believe was a robbery at her Hassan Ali Trace South Barakpur home.
00:15The deadly home invasion occurred sometime between Friday afternoon and 1am on Saturday.
00:21Tara lived upstairs of this house while her daughter and son-in-law lived downstairs.
00:27When we visited on Saturday morning, her son-in-law said he and his wife operate a bar in Lower
00:34Barakpur
00:35and he left home around 4.30pm on Friday to assist her.
00:40Tara was home alone and when the couple returned around 1am after closing up on Saturday morning,
00:47they made the horrific discovery.
00:49As soon as I opened the door and I went inside, the whole place was ramstack.
00:54When I went in now, it's because to see she lie down on the hand and the foot,
01:02tie shrub, and the mouth, put cloth on, stuff in, just like that.
01:10He says both the upstairs and downstairs were ransacked and a significant amount of jewellery,
01:17TT and US dollars were stolen from both of them.
01:20Entry, he says, was gained through a burglar proofing that was cut downstairs while the upstairs door
01:28appeared to have been pried open.
01:30They break it to open it.
01:32When this opened over here, this was straight down here as that.
01:37They raised that and they went in inside.
01:39This is probably about 16 inches for somebody to fit through, but they come in there.
01:46So if they can come in there, nobody is safe anymore, really.
02:11He believes the area would benefit from more police patrols.
02:17In Bapa, you know, I think we could get a little more patrol with the police as well
02:22if we instate an emergency because it will have a lot of people.
02:25After hours, you know, there will still be roaming the road and whatever.
02:29And probably these are the same ones, could be the delayed ones.
02:33You understand?
02:34Because when I sleep in there, waking, and at the end of the day, something has to be done.
02:40He says Tara was very friendly with neighbours and always comfortable in her home.
02:46There was never fear of such an attack.
02:52Tara was a mother of five grandmothers.
02:53She's a very kind, hearty person.
02:56If she has, she could do it out and give.
02:59After how many years, this woman lives.
03:03You understand?
03:04And if to know she's one of the eldest in the street,
03:10and the young people don't have respect for them, well then.
03:15Tara was a mother of five, grandmother of six, and great-grandmother of two.
03:21An autopsy is expected to take place next week
03:24to determine how she died as investigations continue.
