00:00School bus driver and mother of two, 34-year-old Laura Sankar, was chopped to death by a close
00:07male relative at her New Grand Princess Town home on Saturday.
00:12Her 16-year-old son witnessed the attack.
00:16According to police reports, the teen was at home with his younger brother and two cousins,
00:22as Sankar was supposed to take them all to a car show.
00:26He told police Sankar and the suspect were arguing, so he went inside to get dressed
00:31and shortly afterwards heard his mother screaming.
00:35When he came outside, he saw the suspect chopping his mother with a cutlass and quickly got
00:41a wooden stick, hoping to stop the attack, but was unable to.
00:46He and his brother then rushed to a neighbour's house for help, but by the time first responders
00:51arrived at the scene, Sankar was dead.
00:55Investigators say the suspect, who was still at the home, told officers,
01:00quote, I know why I killed she, look the cutlass hair, end quote.
01:05The 41-year-old man was detained and taken into police custody.
01:10On Sunday, Sankar's sister spoke with reporters.
01:13He chopped her to death inside the house by the bathroom.
01:16He cornered her in the bathroom, she couldn't escape, she couldn't escape at all.
01:21She says all relationships have problems.
01:24And while she couldn't say if there was a history of abuse here, there were red flags.
01:52She says her sister was loving and kind and especially enjoyed taking care of her two sons
02:00and the other children in their family.
02:03She encouraged women to look out for certain behavioural traits in their partners
02:08and if necessary, get out before it's too late.
02:22And instead of men to care for women and love a woman, they seem to be advantageous
02:30because they have this egotistic, masculine, whatever, superior behaviour.
02:41And I think when you see red flags start to come up, that is a sign to move on
02:48before it results in losing your life.
