00:00:00Canada.
00:00:10I don't know how to describe why I love fashion.
00:00:13It's just something that's in me since, like, birth.
00:00:16It's one of those things that you have it or you don't.
00:00:18If I don't like what someone's wearing,
00:00:19I can't hide it on my face.
00:00:21Welcome to Shanghai, China.
00:00:23The thought of designing didn't really occur to me
00:00:25until I moved to China.
00:00:27I couldn't find anything to wear.
00:00:28China is the land full of little people,
00:00:31and clearly, I'm not little.
00:00:36Megan?
00:00:36Yes?
00:00:37Darren?
00:00:38Nice to meet you.
00:00:39I'm Darren Hartman from Vancouver.
00:00:41I prefer a woman who is a normal woman
00:00:43who has a bosom and a waist and a bottom.
00:00:46They have shape, you know?
00:00:4836, 24, that kind of thing.
00:00:52Ew, more people.
00:00:53Hello.
00:00:54Where are you from?
00:00:55Montreal.
00:00:56Oh, OK.
00:00:58Hi.
00:00:59I'm Charmette.
00:00:59Nice to meet you.
00:01:00Nice to meet you.
00:01:01Hi, everyone.
00:01:02Hi.
00:01:03Hi.
00:01:04My name is Marie Geneviève Sir, and I'm from Montreal.
00:01:07I do a creation and do research at the Quebec Fashion Designer.
00:01:11I was very surprised to be the only one who speaks French in here, you know?
00:01:14But I don't really care.
00:01:15I'm just looking forward to swear in French.
00:01:18It's going to be great.
00:01:21It's doing all right?
00:01:22Yes.
00:01:23I'm Tyler Longshaw, 35, from Toronto.
00:01:25It's been about three years since I've been designing.
00:01:27Mostly men's wear.
00:01:28I'm trying to get into women's wear more.
00:01:29I'm not used to it, so I'm trying to break into that a little bit more.
00:01:32Hi.
00:01:33Hi.
00:01:34Sophia.
00:01:35Tyler.
00:01:36Lutian.
00:01:37Megan.
00:01:38Lincoln.
00:01:39Hi, Carly.
00:01:40Hi, Lincoln.
00:01:41How many left do we have?
00:01:42My name is Stephen Wong.
00:01:49I am a very quiet, introverted person.
00:01:56Fashion has become an industry that requires more than just great clothes.
00:02:00It requires a personality behind those great clothes.
00:02:03You just play the role, and make sure you know what you're talking about, and it's all
00:02:08good.
00:02:09My name is Michael Hatley.
00:02:11I'm from Toronto.
00:02:12I've been working with my boyfriend, Jason Myers, under the label Jason Myers.
00:02:17I guess you could say I'm my own muse, because I only design things that I like to see on
00:02:23myself.
00:02:24I like things that are wearable, but not too crazy.
00:02:29People call me Bedell, but my name's Evan Bedell.
00:02:32It's Bedell, bitch.
00:02:33I started making clothes because they didn't make clothes in my size.
00:02:37I was heavy.
00:02:38I was 300 pounds when I was in high school.
00:02:40That's fat.
00:02:41That's not heavy.
00:02:42I like to dance.
00:02:43I pretty much dance all the time when I work.
00:02:46I got evicted from my house a week before I came here.
00:02:49So when I go home, I'm not even going to have a place.
00:02:51So this is all my eggs in the basket.
00:02:53We were all sort of waiting around and then the town car came.
00:02:54We didn't know who it was.
00:02:55We had no idea.
00:02:56You guys are over there.
00:03:00It was Brian Bailey.

00:03:47Design that makes people want to sit up and take notice of the talent that is available
00:03:51here in Canada.
00:03:52I think it's going to be just one hell of a great time.
00:03:55this is what the fashion industry is about no brian is amazing i think he's really cut out for
00:04:00the job you know the even better part is you get to meet fashion royalty
00:04:08your host for project runway canada iman
00:04:25as if they wanted us to have a coronary or something because all of a sudden there's iman
00:04:35iman who is so breathtakingly beautiful and truly has this presence about her she's a supermodel
00:04:43who has broadened the definition of beauty and been amused for the world's top fashion designers

00:04:56iman is a humanitarian an entrepreneur and a true fashion icon
00:05:02she's absolutely stunning and we were all mesmerized it was such a historic moment for all of us
00:05:08she's married to david bowie do you know how much i love david bowie i love david
00:05:11david bowie all aboard
00:05:19congratulations to you on making it to toronto you have talent you have style and you have ambition
00:05:27one of you will be the first ever winner of project runway in canada
00:05:37but there's 13 of you here a very unlucky number one of you will be going home right
00:05:47now
00:05:51oh god it was beyond stressful i was just gonna chuck it was just awful
00:05:59so designers let's get started with our very first challenge
00:06:03you will create an outfit on your own model that will rock this yacht you will have equal amounts of
00:06:10fabric a few accessories and not much else you have to be skilled talented but most of all innovative
00:06:18you have 30 minutes designers meet your models
00:06:27first challenge was actually quite shocking you got a box and a curl everything you need is in that box
00:06:33you'll find your work stations you have 30 minutes starting now go 30 minutes and three four meters of
00:06:44white stretch lycra maybe a meter of gold cord
00:06:52i'm really quick i'm really not afraid to cut fabric and when i've got an idea i'm like yeah whatever
00:06:58i think it's good for me because i'm not scared like some people are like oh my god what i'm gonna
00:07:02do you know i can't stop shaking when i opened the box my mind totally went blank and i stood there
00:07:09for like five minutes knowing what i wanted to do but not being able to figure out how the heck i was
00:07:14gonna create it my concept i was just trying to keep it simple because of the time frame so i was
00:07:20trying to do like a tunic top with some few details on it designers you have nine minutes left you might
00:07:27kick it up a notch 13 minutes i was done my design and then tried to look like i was busy because i
00:07:33couldn't sit still no oh my needle broke i was happy because it was one of the most complete garments
00:07:43most tied the fabric where mine was sewn together
00:07:46how much time do we have one minute we're gonna cure designers please stop touching your garment now
00:08:04only the best can stay in this competition brian and i will now judge your designs
00:08:09and one of you has to go home let's start the show
00:08:20i want to do beautiful exquisite detailed clothing fashion should be about drama you know i mean what's
00:08:27the point
00:08:32i have great style i have great aesthetic i have great work ethic i know i'm going to be at toronto fashion
00:08:37week it's it's my destiny
00:08:43i think it turned out well it looked like a real dress so that was what i was going for
00:08:54i loved how my dress turned out she looked incredible in that polyester jersey
00:09:01i'm a kind of designer who like go with the heart i hate anything like commercial and too like fashiony
00:09:17i really enjoy seeing the flat piece of fabric become the shape the garment the image that i've seen in my
00:09:21in my mind
00:09:30all the other glitters in the rope just seemed so obvious to me i was trying to do something unique
00:09:34with a measuring tape
00:09:38i like designing for a woman like me that works that has a family and does not just lounge around
00:09:46coming in second is never good enough so i always go for a first for sure i'm gonna win this for sure
00:10:02i'm pretty competitive i don't get like vicious in competition but i don't like to lose i don't think
00:10:08i ever really yeah i'm passionate about design passion is something that is inside you that
00:10:15you can't control that if you don't let it out you're gonna go crazy so don't with me because i'm
00:10:20gonna win this my aesthetic as a designer would be more classic i would like to do pretty things versus
00:10:30crazy things
00:10:36everyone had done dresses and i was the only one with a hooded cape i was concerned it would be accepted
00:10:43as not good
00:10:47well i really liked her her stuff was beautiful yeah we were really scared all of us were pretty
00:10:53freaked out because someone was going home that this was my favorite i really was very impressed
00:10:59totally seeing this first project really feels like a competition because all the competitors
00:11:04are so talented what about him i don't think so i think that this is a problem i think a sense of
00:11:11proportion isn't right so we made our decision we certainly did
00:11:2013 of you made it to this yacht only 12 of you will continue brian and i were extremely impressed
00:11:28with your designs except one
00:11:33the person who will not continue with project runway canada
00:11:46tyler i'm sorry you just don't measure up you will have to leave the yacht
00:11:58the man and i eliminated tyler because he was overwhelmed it was obvious there was no dress
00:12:07on the runway it was basically a square fabric not to say tyler doesn't have potential but he had the
00:12:13chance to show it and he didn't
00:12:14in the end they didn't like my design as much as the others so it didn't work out
00:12:22i thought the other designers outfits were way better than mine it was just clean but he didn't
00:12:26use the measuring tape yeah just realized maybe i was a little out of my league
00:12:31seeing tyler leave was a relief and someone had to go and it wasn't me
00:12:42congratulations you're the first 12 designers of project runway canada
00:12:48welcome to project runway canada the search for the hottest new fashion designer
00:13:0412 designers will compete three will make it to l'oreal fashion week
00:13:26but only one will rule the runway and win everything they need to start their own fashion line
00:13:34so
00:13:39tempers will flare hemlines will fly
00:13:50and remember fashion isn't always pretty
00:14:04oh my god that's nice oh wow
00:14:16my name is kendra lee francis and i'm from toronto my philosophy is just to always create beautiful
00:14:21things i'm not very trendy so you can have a piece in my closet and it'd be wicked and then you know five
00:14:27years later you can pull it out and it'll still be relevant i created a label called frankie which was a
00:14:33combination of my first name and last name i had a boutique in downtown toronto on queen street
00:14:38and financially it was a bit a bit draining so i closed it and regrouped and
00:14:43starting over
00:14:50i'm lincoln chung i'm from montreal quebec i've always liked designing clothes i was always draw
00:14:56little sketches of clothing and you know finally one day i just decided to do it
00:15:02i'm the woman's wear designer for beto i want to have my own collection because i feel like it's time
00:15:08for me to work for myself and not some other company so this is a this is mine
00:15:15why because i'm on it my bed
00:15:22i grew up in russia and then at 18 made it onto the dance troupe with love from russia
00:15:27we all came here and uh i ended up staying in canada and now i have three daughters for myself i have to
00:15:35provide my designer because i think i'm quite knowledgeable i like what i make and i would
00:15:41wear what i make i know a lot of women would like it too red wine damon my name is lucian matis
00:15:48guys we gotta celebrate i'm originally from romania from transylvania and i came to canada in 1999
00:15:56i've been working in the fashion industry since i was a kid my parents owned a fashion business back
00:16:00home i grew up basically surrounded by fabrics it's run by design constantly i think people
00:16:07here in canada do not understand creative garments everybody wants to look the same i think i bring
00:16:12a flavor of europe which i think especially toronto neat cheers my name is carly wong and i'm from
00:16:20vancouver pc i like to dress up i wear mainly black and white and i don't wear jeans and i haven't worn
00:16:27pants in like two years nobody my age can design and tailor like me i'm 22 years old and i can make
00:16:34anything and everything better than anyone else i've got the goods but i need the means i really like
00:16:41that kind of mixture of asian elements with western elements but not in an obvious way so we have to
00:16:48share this bathroom hey darren no there's two no but they have theirs and we have ours okay this is
00:16:53gonna be so much fun we're gonna make it fun and there's not gonna be any drama yeah no drama for you
00:17:00someone's knocking uh-oh what's that another surprise yes oh no should we relax is it good
00:17:09welcome to project runway canada do not get settled yet please join us on the rooftop deck

00:18:30project runway canada will get a cover and a spread in el canada magazine now designers i'm gonna leave you
00:18:39with brian for your next big challenge so good luck and i will see you on the runway ciao
00:18:49okay designers listen carefully along the sidewall we have all of your luggage lined up you will choose
00:18:56four articles and only four articles of clothing from your competitors suitcases instantly everyone's
00:19:03face dropped some people i thought were gonna cry that was kind of a hard pill to swallow when i found out
00:19:10i had to take four items of clothing from someone else suitcase i my pants with these four articles of
00:19:17clothing you will create a new design that reflects who you are as a designer you will have 90 seconds go
00:19:26it was crazy everyone ran into each other i bumped into so many people
00:19:37i went to sophia's suitcase and she has beautiful clothes but they're commercial clothes they don't
00:19:42have a lot of personality for some reason i wanted stevens because i thought he would have fabulous
00:19:49dramatic clothes in there and he didn't he just had t-shirts and jeans and underwear
00:19:53i instantly thought mj mj mj because that girl's got style and i wanted her suitcase 30 seconds left
00:20:03i took the doll suitcase and i took a bathrobe go faster move it's okay just don't go for the cashmere
00:20:13oh my god come on four items only guys this is like the meanest thing
00:20:19sheenette wasn't very happy with what i've chosen from her luggage that item just meant so much to me
00:20:27and i put so much work into it and it's one of my favorite pieces it's just well maybe you just uh
00:20:32you know this dress is really nice why don't you just use it the way it is i'm thinking well i don't
00:20:36want to hurt your feelings but on the other hand i'm not going to use it the way it is and your time is
00:20:40up now you need to put everything down stand up with your four articles of clothing i have a beautiful set
00:20:46silk pajamas you saw them your name repair i chose items from darren's suitcase to actually have
00:20:53someone go through my luggage and take my favorite clothes and cut them up and make a garment you don't
00:21:00go there deep breath deep breath deep breath deep breath he was like you took my hugo boss and i'm
00:21:04like oh my god that's a hugo boss shirt and an armani shirt that she's got two of mine i'm not impressed
00:21:11my clothes are like my children terrific was there anything good in there oh yeah terrific you've got
00:21:18good things have a great evening get some sleep and enjoy the rose mountain
00:21:30after our challenge we were just happy to relax in our new home at the rose mount
00:21:36i thought the challenge was a complete ghetto style way of starting us off to really like
00:21:44you know kick me in the nuts like that so what do you think they want to help had i known that
00:21:49our suitcases were here to be essentially stolen out of i probably would have packed less favorite pieces
00:21:56of clothing and now they're looking into some ideas this sucks i don't know why i picked this
00:22:05did you pick that i don't know there's like no fabric there i know i saw the elastic and i was like
00:22:11okay elastic oh my goodness they're briefs they're boys briefs and they're like the smallest
00:22:18down door my roommates are michael stephen and chernette my name is chernette swaby and i'm from
00:22:29toronto even though my retail store is quite successful in toronto i would love to have a
00:22:36retail store in new york london and paris as well i think there's something inside of me that tells me
00:22:41that i'm exceptionally good at what i do stephen's like hilarious my foot bad for him because he's
00:22:48like the only boy that's stuck with like all girls you have to be on your best behavior when you're around
00:22:56women last night i needed to fart and i couldn't fart i had to go on the balcony and even on the balcony
00:23:07i was praying that that part would be like a silent you know fart oh it's so brutal
00:23:15steven is very very small so there's not a lot of fabric whatever i make is going to be short and
00:23:20sweet next time i won't be nice
00:23:25better not be a next time but you know what guys i gotta go to bed i've had enough of fashion
00:23:31next on target runway canada
00:23:33you're smiling good for you we'll see how long that lasts trying isn't doing it if you're going
00:23:41to put this in here make sure it works brian bailey came in and of course there was another surprise
00:23:59that would be cute actually my sewing like
00:24:26good morning everybody's eyes are wide open is there a little excitement
00:24:49this is your work group this is where the magic happens go find your workspace it all has your names
00:24:55on it so go and do that let's get it happening when you get to your workspace i want you to lay out
00:25:00the four pieces of clothing that you found in your competitor's suitcase the purpose of this challenge
00:25:06is to show innovation and taking something old and making it new again but i think it's also
00:25:11to break you down a bit because you're losing things that you really care about designers what
00:25:16i'm going to say to you right now is really important you get to take back one article of clothing
00:25:22that you cannot live without so brian said that each one of us could pick one garment back from the
00:25:30person that took our stuff so i took my black peanut skirt it is saved that was really fast that was like
00:25:38no no i want that this guy over there i was really grateful because i had my leather jacket back i think we needed that
00:25:49because like some people were upset like crazy about this challenge i spent all of last night thinking what
00:25:56i could do with just these tiny bits of of fabric and that really threw a wrench in the work michael got
00:26:04to take one of her skirts back which really sucked for me oh i have to say i'm very happy for that
00:26:11my underwear the hardest thing about this challenge is you have to work with old fabrics
00:26:30i'm gonna need to add a lot of details it's a lot of sewing
00:26:33i'm a person who can be like really serious and focused about stuff i'm here to do my own stuff
00:26:41and it's my responsibility to do like whatever i want there's no way i'm gonna trust anyone
00:26:48if you're going to design something today it's got to be pure fantasy the designer should be
00:26:54fantasizing every minute he is working the fabric
00:26:57what i wouldn't do for some fabric i know i feel so sorry i am in that room trying not to be distracted
00:27:11you know you get into your design and you're pinning and you look up and you're like
00:27:15oh okay wow i wouldn't have thought of that where they get their inspiration from i'm still over your
00:27:20jeans stephen i didn't tell you to take the damn jeans i'm sweating my ass off so my design is going
00:27:29to be a dress the hardest part for me is incorporating three different fabrics that i would normally not
00:27:37pick and sort of colors that i normally wouldn't pick and still trying to make that mine and like
00:27:44something that i would do i can't concentrate it's too hot in here in general i'm fairly confident but
00:27:49when it comes to design executing like from concept to the finished product it's something that's
00:27:55relatively new to me it is crucial that you know how to sew and you know how to sew fast and you know
00:28:02how to design fast so if you don't know how to sew then that is a big problem since i live and work
00:28:08in shanghai i don't have to sew on a daily basis because i have a staff who does it for me because
00:28:13i have sample sewers and i have pattern makers megan how's it going um it's going great
00:28:19this uh this old t-shirt is like causing me problems which one's that the coral color yeah
00:28:26because it's because it's too big it's making it too big here you're just at the fitting stage
00:28:31megan you're you're like cleaning up the the shape half time i don't know if it's like complete garbage
00:28:37or not if you're going to put this in here make sure it works is it looking how you want it to look
00:28:44if i was you and i'm sitting here pinning and i'm just kind of biased this is really great and you
00:28:51know now all of a sudden i'm hitting difficulty here yeah you know maybe this needs to be cleaned
00:28:58up yes yes i have a trench coat a long tunic and dress and i kind of took them all apart and i'm redoing
00:29:07them into a very deconstructed dress with big poofy sleeves and pretty asymmetric patterns and then
00:29:15here i want to do i want to close it up i think it's much sexier if it's closed up what do you think
00:29:20no you know leave it open yeah because i find a woman very sexy when she's all you know closed up
00:29:27it's just going to be a layer of this right all the way up and then a ruffle
00:29:33damn good i like what's going on here fine craftsman i would say this is a competition
00:29:41gorgeous do not forget that has this design got a name it's really happening all of the people in
00:29:49this competition they all like to be told they're doing well never mind what's over there it's about
00:29:56you you know when i get up in the morning i open the back door and i just let my little dogs run free
00:30:00and that's sort of like what's happening here they're so eager they're so excited they've got
00:30:03all this determination and then you know what they come and they just sit down and they want to be
00:30:07petting i'm liking this yeah it's looking good this is gorgeous isn't it cute i love it it's good
00:30:13the binding yeah i love that okay good you'll see it's nice okay i don't like it when some people say
00:30:22nice what are you gonna do with that slit that's what the oh it's gonna be a closed right down okay but
00:30:26i'll still throw a zipper in there like i did these tomorrow tomorrow tomorrow after the fitting
00:30:30i'm not gonna put a freaking zipper in tonight and have to rip it out tomorrow from lincoln's luggage i
00:30:34took three t-shirts and a pair of sweatpants i decided that i'm not going to take his best pieces
00:30:38out of his luggage just to make myself stronger in the in the competition i'm just not a cutthroat
00:30:43individual i believe in karma darren brian how's it going darren um it's a little challenging it's a little
00:30:51more difficult than what i expected actually is it yeah right you know a sweat pant material turned
00:30:56into a sexy skirt well we'll see what happens there's nothing wrong with that no no no no and
00:31:02but let's make it sexy try trying isn't doing it designers i have with me two very special guests
00:31:12eddie maltaire is the official makeup artist eric delmonico is the official hair artist for l'oreal
00:31:18paris i would like everyone to know eddie and i are going to be here offering our consultations

00:31:55is not done right how do i fix this how do i fix this oh crap
00:32:00looks like you're almost done yeah that's great i didn't have a lot of fabrics so you what i didn't
00:32:08have a lot of fabrics so this is all that's sometimes having too much is not good you know you have to
00:32:13get through it and this way you were just focused in on it yeah vidal seems to be a character he seems
00:32:18to know what he's doing but uh he's definitely a little bit out there this was yours yeah
00:32:24you like what he's done with it i do actually i think megan kind of i think her head is somewhere
00:32:31else why does time go away so quickly i think you're worrying about the wrong things right now
00:32:36oh you're actually stitching that hey well how else am i supposed to do it sew it in the machine
00:32:41i think megan is uh she's still in china in a way i don't necessarily know if this is her path
00:32:46a lot of people are done hey tomorrow somebody will be same home look at you you get your dress
00:33:02back and you hang it up right away so happy that happened today oh that's that's good i like mine
00:33:10strong okay to another day cheers i think it's really cool that megan lives in shanghai and
00:33:27works so hard at what she wants to do and she's taking that leap and challenged herself it's a nice
00:33:32type of feeling of camaraderie like we're all kind of going through the same stuff if it was people who
00:33:37were really intense and all about the competition then it would just make life so much crappier
00:33:45i think i'm competitive with myself like i don't care about the other guys i don't
00:33:50yeah i don't really give a damn about it you know you didn't have your shoes on today i ran around all
00:33:55days barefoot didn't i did you absolutely you didn't notice no yeah it's the only way i sew
00:34:02darren's probably the loudest out of all of us i just got this thing i can't sew with shoes on my feet i
00:34:06can't pay the machine darren just kept talking and talking that's disgusting talking and talking
00:34:14and talking and talking i think that's just his thing he just talks a lot i've always done barefoot
00:34:20i can't actually you can feel the machine then i'm a chatty person i chat with everyone i travel the
00:34:24world i chat to strangers i get along with with basically everyone um but i've learned a long time
00:34:29ago in this life not everyone loves you and you're not going to love everyone on this planet
00:34:35i have the same thing when i drive like if i drive a sports car it can't be barefoot that is so illegal
00:34:40i know
00:34:41no no no i know okay bye guys
00:34:49can you help me on stuff this pillow how do you do that i can't sleep on that oh my god
00:34:56i feel like i'm a bit in high school it's like the conversations that i feel like an old man
00:35:03do you guys want another pillow i do if we become friends great but i want to win you know that's my
00:35:09goal that's my focus oh much better you okay prima donna
00:35:17next on project runway canada
00:35:22i think you always need to stand back and look at things he's totally right there's something here i
00:35:27don't like luciano's work so hero dude you're in canada now i'm concerned about megan is having
00:35:36trouble getting this outfit together the scenes are literally tearing
00:35:57it's time to get up then
00:36:05i hate the fact that it's elimination day
00:36:12i can handle it if the other judges say something bad about it
00:36:16if i want to say something bad about it i'll just die
00:36:23it's the morning of the elimination and i feel really stressed but in a way i think my
00:36:27government is strong
00:36:34you believe it this is actually the ass of your baby seat
00:36:38when i look around the room it's like everyone is so good you know everyone's so talented
00:36:43it's going to be very difficult for my sanity because i mean every challenge someone's going home
00:36:52i just keep visualizing my model her hips are much bigger than everybody else's so
00:36:56i'm really concerned i don't want to put the zipper in until the last minute
00:37:04okay everyone listen up you have three hours to make it all happen you will be going upstairs
00:37:10to the l'oreal paris beauty room you need to be able to speak the language of fashion to these
00:37:16amazing experts because they will transform your vision for the runway and you should all be
00:37:23thinking about your accessories how it's going to go on the runway behind you is of course the
00:37:27winner's accessory wall fabulous pieces over there you had better pull out every stop that you've got
00:37:33what we'll do now is bring in the models
00:37:39beautiful beautiful
00:37:40look woops how you doing looks like it fits pretty perfect
00:37:47really really guess my sides off
00:37:52looks pretty good i think so i might even want it a little bit tighter
00:37:57i start off with a really great fit and add a lot of details i'm someone who doesn't give up
00:38:04I just keep going until it works.
00:38:06I guess until I don't have energy or until I die.
00:38:10I like it all open.
00:38:11Yeah, me too.
00:38:12I like to have it.
00:38:13Yeah, it's the size.
00:38:14Before going on the catwalk, you need to talk to your model
00:38:17and get her in the dress and have her feel the dress.
00:38:22She needs to own it.
00:38:23You know what I mean?
00:38:25What about the shoes?
00:38:27Are they good?
00:38:28I can work it.
00:38:29There's something here I don't like.
00:38:35I don't really get Luciano's work yet.
00:38:38Like, it's so Euro and like, dude, you're in Canada now.
00:38:43We don't wear that stuff.
00:38:44We're not all in theater here.
00:38:51Evan, can I have you first to go upstairs to Eric and Eddie
00:38:54in the L'Oreal Paris beauty room?
00:38:59Hello.
00:39:04Hey, Evan.
00:39:05What do you think?
00:39:06Something sort of like superhero kind of glam rock.
00:39:10Misfits.
00:39:11Like, I can't wait to run into her in a back alley
00:39:13and her kick my ass kind of thing.
00:39:22Good. Hi.
00:39:23Beautiful.
00:39:24Gorgeous.
00:39:25I'm going with a quite simple look when it comes to the makeup.
00:39:29Very natural.
00:39:30But then with the hair, I'm going to go a bit crazier.
00:39:32Very dramatic.
00:39:33Just a nice big round shape.
00:39:34Not too clean.
00:39:35Not too precise.
00:39:36Yeah.
00:39:37And then just every now and then, a nice loose.
00:39:38Exactly.
00:39:39Okay.
00:39:42Bonjour.
00:39:43Ça va?
00:39:44Oui.
00:39:45So I thought maybe like a little bit of silver or something
00:39:48a little bit icy, you know, this color.
00:39:52Hmm.
00:39:53Here.
00:39:54Are you alone?
00:39:55Uh, yeah.
00:39:56She told me what she wanted and I'm just going to tell you
00:39:58she's just still working on the dress, so.
00:39:59Oh.
00:40:00Oh.
00:40:01Oh.
00:40:02Okay.
00:40:04Megan, right?
00:40:05She wants it pretty, like not too high, but like up and then
00:40:08just kind of like dragged back over whatever's volumized.
00:40:11Okay.
00:40:18Okay.
00:40:19What are these last holidays?
00:40:20Oh, Rick, you have no idea.
00:40:22It's called stress, baby.
00:40:24Stress, stress, stress.
00:40:25Taking two t-shirts and a pair of sweats and turning it into a
00:40:28casual day look, I thought I did pretty well.
00:40:33If you start adding a lot of jewelry, I think it'll take away from
00:40:35this, you know?
00:40:44You need to see her walk.
00:40:45You need to see her move to make sure that hair is happening.
00:40:47Don't sit there and feel that you're done yet.
00:40:49Do you understand what I'm saying?
00:40:51Because I think you need to listen to me.
00:40:53I wouldn't be totally happy with everything that's going on over there.
00:40:56You've got perhaps enough time to save this.
00:41:02Yeah, I'm on it.
00:41:03All right, good.
00:41:04What are you doing with the flap thing in the middle of that dress?
00:41:07Flap is just going to flap.
00:41:09I'm not doing anything with it.
00:41:11Think of the judges.
00:41:13Where's their eye going to?
00:41:15Because there's still stuff that needs to be done with it.
00:41:18I think you always need to stand back and look at things.
00:41:21I have some alterations due to the shorts, but I know what you're saying.
00:41:24You're doing it shorter?
00:41:25Yeah.
00:41:26I like the length that it is.
00:41:31Am I in danger of being eliminated today?
00:41:34Well, I'm pretty nervous.
00:41:40Okay.
00:41:44He's totally right.
00:41:45It's so beautiful.
00:41:46I love it.
00:41:47Oh, that's stunning.
00:41:48I love it.
00:41:49Let's see your garment.
00:41:50I haven't seen it.
00:41:51At the front, it looks clean.
00:41:52And when she's going to turn inside all of this, I'm going to...
00:41:55Turn like that.
00:41:57And then...
00:41:58I was trying to help my model walk a certain way.
00:42:03And yes, when I'm naked by myself at home, yes, I walk around like a model sometimes.
00:42:09I love it.
00:42:10I just think it's so fancy.
00:42:12Your top is so billowy and then like...
00:42:15I don't know.
00:42:17Well, I was worried that Darren's outfit was a little heavy on top.
00:42:21And he wanted to use a really, really big, heavy bag.
00:42:24And I was like, I don't know, I think you should use like a smaller bag and something not so excessive.
00:42:31It's hard.
00:42:32It's really hard.
00:42:36I need her.
00:42:37Take care.
00:42:38Okay.
00:42:40Okay.
00:42:41Fabric of the shirt is very old cotton, so it keeps stretching from overnight.
00:42:50So now it just keeps loosening, loosening.
00:42:53And then the last thing is to get this dress on this girl and get the zipper in.
00:42:58Wow.
00:42:59That was the workout.
00:43:00Girl, you killed me.
00:43:01I'm concerned about Megan because she's having trouble getting this outfit together and the fabric seems to be shredding and fraying.
00:43:11Yeah, well, I don't have time to fix anything and now this looks like crap, so...
00:43:28You've got seven minutes.
00:43:31You've got seven minutes.
00:43:34Relax.
00:43:35That zipper.
00:43:36My fabric?
00:43:37All my seams just shredded.
00:43:38Just make it happen.
00:43:39Oh my God.
00:43:40This just shredded too.
00:43:41I can't...
00:43:42I don't even dress.
00:43:43The seams are literally tearing.
00:43:44Tore.
00:43:45Tore.
00:43:46Okay.
00:43:47Zip it up.
00:43:48Megan's not very skilled at sewing, so she's having a very hard time.
00:44:04Plus the material is jersey, so it's not the easiest to sew.
00:44:11Can you come here?
00:44:13Yeah.
00:44:14Designers, you need to put all your tools down.
00:44:19Now you're finished.
00:44:20You're done.
00:44:21We're off to the runway.
00:44:23Now!
00:44:24Carry your shoes.
00:44:25We've got to run.
00:44:27Whoa.
00:44:32Hello, designers.
00:44:45Your challenge was to use your competitor's clothing to create the ultimate expression of your own look.
00:44:52We can't wait to find out how you did.
00:44:56Let me introduce to you, for the first time, the experts who will judge your designs.
00:45:01From Elle Canada, editor-in-chief Rita Selban.
00:45:05Her fashion savvy has taken her straight to the top of the magazine world, and she's always on the lookout for the best new Canadian talent.
00:45:14You'll certainly want to impress her.
00:45:17What I'm hoping to see from the designers is some razzle-dazzle.
00:45:22There are a couple of things I don't want to see, and at a very basic level, I don't want to see sloppy tailoring.
00:45:28They really have to be clean in their execution of their ideas.
00:45:33And then, of course, they have to have a great original idea.
00:45:37Next, we have the founder and creative director of Bustle Clothing, Sean Hewson.
00:45:43Bustle is in its tenth season and already has become a celebrity fashion favorite.
00:45:48As a designer, Sean knows exactly what you're going through.
00:45:53So don't think you can fool him.
00:45:56We're hoping to see somebody who has a strong point of view.
00:46:01We also want something that's going to evoke some emotion.
00:46:05I don't want to see someone who's duplicating trends and doing stuff that we already see out there.
00:46:11I want to see personality.
00:46:13And our special guest judge for today, and one of the hottest designers in the country, Arthur Mendoza.
00:46:19I'm looking for quality, design concept, someone who's standing out.
00:46:25We'll find out who wins this challenge, and who doesn't measure up.
00:46:30Let's start the show.
00:46:32When I saw my outfit coming down the runway, I was pretty excited.
00:46:44Although, I think it looked a little wrinkled.
00:46:49I think my model carried the dress really well.
00:46:54I was really pleased.
00:47:04I was proud of it.
00:47:06I thought it looks great.
00:47:09It's exactly how I wanted it to look.
00:47:21I felt proud to see my design.
00:47:23I think my model did pretty good on the runway.
00:47:30She carried it off well, and the dress fitter really nicely.
00:47:40When I saw the model coming down the runway, I thought she was drunk a little bit,
00:47:44because she looked like she was almost going to fall over.
00:47:48And she looked naked like she was wearing a bathing suit,
00:47:50and that's what I made the garment out of, so I was a little bit worried.
00:47:52I was concerned about the shorts she was wearing.
00:47:53I didn't get a chance to put as much detail as I wanted on it.
00:47:55But I also was concerned that if I put details on the shorts, it might compete with the jacket
00:47:59that was already so overdone.
00:48:00I thought it was really nice.
00:48:02Like, I was really proud of myself to see what I came up with, you know, in such a short time.
00:48:03I thought it was really nice.
00:48:04I was really proud of myself to see what I came up with, you know, in such a short time.
00:48:05I was really happy.
00:48:06I was really happy.
00:48:07I was really happy.
00:48:08I was really happy.
00:48:09I was really happy.
00:48:10I was really happy.
00:48:11I was really happy.
00:48:12I was really happy.
00:48:13I was really happy.
00:48:14I was really happy.
00:48:15I was really happy.
00:48:16I was really happy.
00:48:21I was happy.
00:48:22I was happy.
00:48:23I was happy.
00:48:24I was happy.
00:48:25I was happy.
00:48:26I was happy.
00:48:27I thought it was really nice.
00:48:28Like, I was really proud of myself to see what I came up with, you know, in such a short
00:48:32time.
00:48:33I was really happy.
00:48:35As I saw my model walk down the runway, I was like feeling a bit better because you
00:48:49couldn't see any of the parts where I had to double-sided tape the dress.
00:49:02This challenge was to take someone's clothes and create a garment that is wearable.
00:49:10Clothes made into clothes does not define me as a designer.
00:49:17When my outfit was going down the runway, I did not look at the judges.
00:49:24I just looked at my model.
00:49:27I was relieved because it didn't look horrible on her.
00:49:30I felt really a little bit special when my model was on the catwalk because she's so,
00:49:43like, gorgeous and beautiful.
00:49:45I think my outfit was, like, nice on stage and it was different than everybody else.
00:49:53When the model came down the runway, I was quite pleased with it but not completely satisfied.
00:50:08Sophia didn't have a lot of garments that matched in that suitcase.
00:50:11I wasn't very happy with that.
00:50:24My model has a darker skin so the white looks excellent against that.
00:50:28I watched the judges, of course.
00:50:30They made a mark on their papers, no particular expression of any kind and it was done.
00:50:51We have judged and scored your designs.
00:50:54Designers, please step onto the runway.
00:51:00If I say your name, please step forward.
00:51:04Sophia.
00:51:05Sophia.
00:51:06Sharnett.
00:51:07Michael.
00:51:08Carly.
00:51:09Lincoln.
00:51:10Megan.
00:51:11Megan.
00:51:12If I called you forward, it's because we are very satisfied of how you handled this challenge.
00:51:40You are still in the competition.
00:51:45You may leave the runway.
00:51:49I'm just, like, relieved that my ass isn't up there having to defend anything.
00:52:03For the rest of you, you are the designers with the highest scores and the lowest scores.
00:52:09Let's bring out your models.
00:52:11Sean, do you have a question for Stephen?
00:52:12Stephen, I find the styling of the outfit a little bit odd, actually, the combination of the three pieces.
00:52:25I took Kendra's, baby tea, a little tiny wrap top and a towel.
00:52:32Where do you see the woman for whom you've made this outfit wearing this outfit?
00:52:38To a pool party or...
00:52:41She's got the towel.
00:52:42Yeah, exactly.
00:52:44I don't like this outfit. I think it's tacky.
00:52:47When I first saw it, it looked like there hadn't been much done to it.
00:52:51It looks like the shorts could have been pulled out from a suitcase, the top could have been pulled out from a suitcase.
00:52:57I'm not impressed with this outfit.
00:53:00Kendra.
00:53:02I took clothing from Stephen's luggage and Stephen's quite small. So, his skinny jeans were, this is all of it.
00:53:13Although it's very short, it's very classic.
00:53:16Ribbon detailing on the front does give it some detail. I'm wondering if you've used something in the back to give that some structure. Is there boning or something going on in there?
00:53:23Yeah, there's boning the entire bodice.
00:53:25And the back as well? Can you see that?
00:53:27Yeah, front and back.
00:53:28I'm a fan.
00:53:29When I saw this outfit come down the runway, I immediately thought of the person to wear it and that's Posh Spice.
00:53:35I think she would love this outfit.
00:53:37Yeah, it's not short enough for her.
00:53:39Yeah, that's probably true. But I think it's very well done, very well constructed.
00:53:45Videl.
00:53:46Well, I found the ugliest bathing suit I've ever seen was this.
00:53:50This one, I was on the fence about this dress. I didn't know that it originated as a bathing suit. I think it's really well done.
00:53:59You've put together a good hair and makeup concept to go with it to create a complete look and a point of view, a strong point of view.
00:54:06Well, I'm a Leo and it's like, look at me, look at me here. And I don't think anybody's looking anywhere else but this girl walking by and...
00:54:16Darren.
00:54:18When I saw this outfit come out, I thought, this looks like the product of someone who was given someone else's clothes and asked to make an outfit out of it.
00:54:27I think it's unflattering. I think it's sort of gimmicky, not in a good way.
00:54:34Your raw materials were not the best choice.
00:54:37No, they were not the choice at all.
00:54:38When I went into Lincoln's suitcase, he had some beautiful brand new jeans and a couple of dress shirts. And when I looked at him and he noticed that I had grabbed them, I couldn't destroy him. To win the competition, I couldn't.
00:54:50If you're here for the competition, you should be here to win, not to be friends with everyone.
00:54:55But at the same time, I did not want to crucify someone. It was the look in his eyes when I had his jeans in my hands was like I was just about to kick a small puppy. And I just, I did not have the strength in me to do that.
00:55:08I'm sure they did not hesitate with your own suitcase.
00:55:12Certainly not, no.
00:55:13Is winning the competition important to you?
00:55:16Obviously, it's not wearable. But I think that if, like I said, if I was to...
00:55:19Aha! Key word. You cannot, cannot create something that's not wearable.
00:55:24An art piece is what I was sort of going for.
00:55:27An art piece belongs to a museum.
00:55:29Yes. Thank you.
00:55:31Marie-Jean Babe.
00:55:36I wanted to do something, like, cute and really comfy as well, you know, a little bit like the bat robe.
00:55:41I think the bat robe actually inspired me. Well, me, I'm really crafty a little bit, so that's why I did, like, macrame a little bit with ribbons.
00:55:48Just a little bit. It's really me, you know?
00:55:52It is whimsical. It feels very much like it's your personality in this dress.
00:55:58The volume's exceptional, and I love the way that you've actually put pockets in the sides.
00:56:02Yeah.
00:56:03That's great. It's a really hot dress.
00:56:05Thanks.
00:56:06Okay, Lucien.
00:56:07I wanted to incorporate a bit of my background. I'm from Transylvania, and this is actually the look of a traditional shirt, Transylvania shirt.
00:56:14And I just wanted to make a sophisticated dress with very unexpected elements of design.
00:56:19It's manic, for sure, but I think it's also a virtuoso effort. I think it's fantastic. It's a beautiful dress.
00:56:27Thank you so much.
00:56:28May I say the back of the dress? I think it's too much. I like it without the big sleeves, maybe, but as far as, you know, all of that going on at once, I think it's a little too much.
00:56:40Is there any stretch in the fabric? There is.
00:56:42Well, then, I'm pretty impressed with the tailoring.
00:56:45I think you took everything that you could and put it all in one dress. All the little bows I find a little too much, so a little restraint sometimes goes a long way.
00:56:53I really want to get away from plain garments. I mean, that's all that Canada has, and that's what I want to get away from. So, thank you, though.
00:57:06I've answered all our questions. Now, please leave the runway while we decide who will be in and who doesn't measure up.
00:57:19Okay, judges. Bidale.
00:57:22This was a bit of a love-hate one until I found out what he had to work with. To take bathing suits and wrangle them into that dress, that's a feat.
00:57:32The effect that he created using the lines in the fabric I thought was actually quite ingenious. It was great.
00:57:38He ended up making something quite nice out of it.
00:57:40I thought it showed really a lot of confidence.
00:57:45What do you think about Lucien?
00:57:47It was okay. It was okay, but I thought it was...
00:57:49Well, there, I disagree with you.
00:57:50No, it was too much.
00:57:51No, it was not. It was really inventive, creative, well-tailored. The use of the knitwear in there was genius.
00:57:59It was the pilgrim sleeves on there. I mean, it was just too much.
00:58:02Tailoring was really nice, but again, I think he over-embellished it just a little bit.
00:58:08Marie. Genevieve.
00:58:10It was put together in such a way that it moved beautifully for something made out of a bathrobe.
00:58:14I think it was extremely chic in a very modern way. It wasn't labored. It wasn't trying too hard. I loved it.
00:58:21Absolutely.
00:58:24Next. Darren.
00:58:27Well, the challenge was select pieces that you can use to make an outfit which demonstrates who you are as a designer.
00:58:34And then he told us, this is nothing like what I would make.
00:58:36I felt it was more tragic than magic. We expect more than that here.
00:58:41And every time he made an excuse, it just made it worse.
00:58:44It was a clumsy effort.
00:58:45Yes.
00:58:49What about Kendra?
00:58:50Kendra.
00:58:51You know, I think Kendra was very nervous about the fabrics that she had to work with, but she just pulled it off beautifully.
00:58:59She did a really good job, especially making the skirt out of the jeans.
00:59:02And I thought her use of the ribbon was really ingenious.
00:59:05Did we care how short it was?
00:59:08I liked how short it was.
00:59:09I bet you did.
00:59:10I think that was great.
00:59:11The more I looked at that dress, the more I liked it.
00:59:16What did we think of Steven?
00:59:17It looked like a mall outfit.
00:59:21Oh.
00:59:22When I found out he used a towel to make the top, he sort of pulled himself up a little bit with that.
00:59:27I mean, that was pretty innovative.
00:59:29It redeemed him.
00:59:30I would say it totally redeemed him.
00:59:32Yeah.
00:59:33Not to the international standard.
00:59:36Et voila.
00:59:38We made our decision.
00:59:39Let's bring them back.
00:59:48As you know, sometimes in fashion, you just don't measure up.
00:59:55There are six of you on the runway.
01:00:00But only five will continue with the competition.
01:00:05The person who has failed in this challenge will be out.
01:00:10There are six of you on the runway.
01:00:23The winner of today's challenge cannot be eliminated in the next challenge.
01:00:28But the person who has failed will be out.
01:00:34And now, for our decision.
01:00:36Kendra, you have not won this challenge.
01:00:46But you're still in the competition.
01:00:56Are you guys in here like wondering who's coming up next?
01:00:59And now, for the winner of this challenge, congratulations, Marie Jonvieve.
01:01:16We loved what you did.
01:01:18Thanks.
01:01:19And we thought it fully expressed what you are as a designer.
01:01:23Congratulations.
01:01:25You can leave the runway.
01:01:26Thanks.
01:01:32Winning the challenge gives me, like, confidence, that's for sure.
01:01:35And I was really happy to see that the judge understood what I was trying to do.
01:01:49Lucca.
01:01:53Congratulations.
01:01:54You're still in the competition.
01:02:00Ludi.
01:02:02Congrats.
01:02:03Congrats.
01:02:14Big Del, we were also very impressed
01:02:18with what you did.
01:02:19You're still in.
01:02:21You can leave the runway.
01:02:25Come on.
01:02:25That was great.
01:02:26Were you having a heart attack?
01:02:33Now, there are only two of you left.
01:02:40Steven, we felt you did not try hard enough.
01:02:46There was a lack of design in your outfit.
01:02:51Darren, lots of excuses.
01:02:56You didn't even try.
01:02:59You didn't even try.
01:03:02And in the end, it was not wearable.
01:03:12Darren, I'm sorry, but you just don't measure up.
01:03:21Steven, you're in, but just barely.
01:03:26We expect better things next time.
01:03:30You can leave the runway.
01:03:36Steven!
01:03:47I'm sorry.
01:03:48Ciao.
01:03:49It has been an amazing pleasure to meet you.
01:03:50Good luck.
01:03:51Take care.
01:03:52I told you.
01:03:53I told you.
01:03:54I told you.
01:03:55Integrity above destruction.
01:03:56Okay?
01:03:58Unfortunately, the best thing to do right now is to go to your workspace, put your things
01:04:13together, and I wish you good luck.
01:04:15I don't know about you, but my heart's going like this.
01:04:16I have never been in the presence of so much creative energy in my entire life.
01:04:29I respect all of them for what they did.
01:04:32Next time, on Project Runway Canada, are you ready for your next challenge?
01:04:41Think.
01:04:42Green.
01:04:43Would you like to see your material?
01:04:45We just wanted to work with real fabric.
01:04:47I thought Megan should have been eliminated.
01:04:49I thought Megan would go, that's for sure.
01:04:51I think you should look at that again.
01:04:53Sometimes good art is creating an honest mess.
01:04:55Fidel dress is just, it's disgusting.
01:05:00Did you really try hard?
01:05:01There's a weird flap in the back.
01:05:03I'm very disappointed in this outfit.
01:05:05It just reads Mary Poppins to me.
01:05:07To me, it's a design student dress.
01:05:09Excuse me.
01:05:10You're testing us.
01:05:11In the real world of fashion, immunity does not exist.
01:05:16I'm really stressed out.
01:05:18It's so difficult.
01:05:25You're testing me with
01:05:29alcohol.
01:05:34You think so?
01:05:36You're testing me with alcohol!
01:05:43It's being testします!
01:05:44I know this når you dieyourze Ratто дляkastата.
01:05:47Sure yep!
01:05:50That's fine.
01:05:52That's fine!
01:05:53Yeah!
01:05:54You
