00:00to go to work as these guys try to write a different script to the end of this season.
00:08For the second time, the Vince Lombardi trophy is headed to Philadelphia.
00:13Eagles fly in Super Bowl 59.
00:16For those of you who were with us last year, I know it didn't end like we wanted it to.
00:24And we all have a little bit of a bitter taste in our mouth.
00:27You have an opportunity here to lay the foundation.
00:31The great thing is you have one of the best coaching staffs in the history of the National Football League.
00:41It isn't going to be easy.
00:43In terms of what you guys need to focus on, it's taking it day by day.
00:48Going out there and giving your best each day, each grill.
00:52Let's go, let's go.
00:54Let's go, please!
00:56Let's get it done.
00:58Hello to everyone, and welcome to Chiefs Preseason Football, presented by Hy-Vee.
01:18Tonight, the preseason finale at home back in Kansas City at GEHA Field at Arrowhead.
01:25Looking forward to the Bears and the Chiefs.
01:28Hello to everyone.
01:29He's Trent Green.
01:29I'm Ari Wolfer.
01:30Thrilled to be back here in Kansas City.
01:32Trent, this is one last chance, one big opportunity night for a lot of guys to try to make this 53-man roster.
01:38Well, and that's the biggest thing about the third preseason game is those final roster spots.
01:43What can you contribute on special teams?
01:44Dave Tobe talked to us about it this week, about those final spots being so critical in making this roster.
01:50It's so many decisions have to be made.
01:52You look at this team and how good that they've been.
01:55Tonight, we're going to see the starters again.
01:57And that's critical because the preseason hasn't gone according to plan.
02:00I know everyone's excited to see QB1 to start the game tonight.
02:03Patrick Mahomes will be looking for his man, Travis Kelsey.
02:05Well, that's the thing.
02:06Last week in Seattle, not many of the starters played, and we're going to see those two tonight.
02:11Xavier Worthy is going to get an opportunity.
02:12Nick Bolton didn't play last week, get a chance to help shore up that run defense,
02:17and Trent McDuffie will get a chance on the field as well.
02:20Here's what to watch presented by the University of Kansas Health System,
02:23the official health care provider of the Kansas City Chiefs.
02:26Well, it's going to be Mahomes playing time.
02:27He's only had a couple of snaps all preseason.
02:29That was that opening drive against the Cardinals.
02:32And then it's the run defense.
02:33It wasn't good enough a week ago.
02:35You can use whatever excuses you want, but the run defense has to be better.
02:38And then the spinal roster spots that we just talked about is going to be critical tonight,
02:43making that last impression.
02:45Speaking of the roster, for more on that, let's go down to the field to our Kimmy Checks.
02:49Yeah, guys, as you mentioned, in the preseason, you kind of hear the saying,
02:53the game, it doesn't count, but it does matter.
02:55Of course, those wins and losses, they don't carry over.
02:58But every single opportunity and every single snap during preseason
03:02is a continued option for the coaching staff to assess who is going to be called up
03:06to that 53-man roster, which must be finalized by Tuesday, August 26th at 1 p.m. Eastern.
03:13Now, the Chiefs, they're already helping make moves towards that number
03:15by trading two-time Super Bowl champ and former second-round pick Sky Moore
03:19to the 49ers on Wednesday.
03:21Once those rosters are set, teams can also begin building out their 16-man practice squad.
03:26So for so many of the players out here tonight, it's a final high-stakes audition
03:30to prove that they belong when Kansas City opens the season in Brazil
03:34against the Los Angeles Chargers just two weeks from today.
03:38Great stuff, Kimmy.
03:40We can't wait for the start of this one.
03:43The preseason finale here in Kansas City when we come back,
03:47the opening kick between the Chicago Bears and the Kansas City Chiefs.
03:54Hungry?
03:55Hy-Vee.
03:56Eighty-four degrees, and this place is rocking.
04:02Carlos Carson there banging the drum.
04:05A great Chiefs wide receiver from 1980 through 1989.
04:09There is Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.
04:12I know he'd like to see the players play at a really high level tonight,
04:15get a little momentum before the start of the regular season,
04:18which begins two weeks from tonight in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
04:21Cairo Santos to kick it off for the Bears.
04:26Brashard Smith, Nico Remigio are deep for the Chiefs.
04:29We've got 15 minutes on the board.
04:31We are ready for the preseason finale, and here we go.
04:36Brashard Smith on the return across his own 20, 25,
04:40and he falls forward to the 30-yard line.
04:43It's a pretty good field position for Patrick Mahomes.
04:46And the Chiefs offense, Patrick, last season, good numbers.
04:52Became the franchise leader in touchdown passes with 245 last season.
04:57Has played very little in the preseason.
05:00I know Chiefs kingdom excited to see him out here playing at home.
05:03Well, with only a couple snaps in the preseason and no snaps last week,
05:07it's important for him to get out here.
05:10Isaiah Pacheco, the ball carrier.
05:13And the big guys up front helping pick up six yards there.
05:17And try and get some of that timing already before they head down to Brazil
05:20and take on the Chargers.
05:22I know there's always the concern in the preseason playing and injuries
05:26and all that, but you've got to have some timing,
05:29especially with that left side of the offensive line that we were just looking at,
05:34getting your timing down with those guys as well.
05:36Yeah, Josh Simmons, the first-round pick, the starting left tackle.
05:39Mahomes to throw back shoulder in and out of the hands there,
05:43but a late flag comes in looking for Rashi Rice there.
05:51Nashawn Wright was in coverage for the Bears.
05:58Or she's just working up that left sideline.
05:59Wright was in good position, just a firm ball to the back shoulder.
06:04There are two fouls on the play.
06:07Pass interference, defense number 25.
06:10There's also personal foul, face mask, defense number 25.
06:14Both of these fouls will reinforce 15 yards from the defensive pass interference spot.
06:22First down, Kansas City.
06:2330 yards in penalties there.
06:27The big mistake from the Bears.
06:29Let's see if the Chiefs can take advantage.
06:30First and 10 from the Bears, 29-yard line.
06:34Well, it's hard to see where the face mask was.
06:35It must have been at the line of scrimmage when he got the release.
06:38He got the hands to the face is all I can assume.
06:40And then they'll re-huddle up.
06:46Mahomes now in his ninth year out of Texas Tech.
06:49This will be his eighth year as the starter.
06:52Seven straight trips to the AFC Championship game.
06:56Five Super Bowl trips and three Super Bowl rings.
07:01That's unbelievable.
07:01As a starter, his seven years as a starter,
07:04the worst he's done is the AFC Championship game.
07:07Phenomenal.
07:08Play action.
07:09Mahomes rolling to his right.
07:10Sets up, looking downfield all day to throw.
07:14And now he'll throw it out of bounds.
07:18Rasheed Rice with the intended target.
07:20Good defense there from the Bears.
07:23And now for the players to watch, brought to you by T-Mobile.
07:26Kingsley Suamata-Eyes over at left guard.
07:29I want to see him.
07:30Got to get the run blocking going.
07:31It's a new position for him.
07:32He was a tackle last year.
07:33Get that going on that left side of the line.
07:35Brashard Smith, we've already seen in the kickoff return.
07:38Dave Tobe talked to us about the fact he wants to see him get touches,
07:41both in special teams and on offense.
07:44And then the last person is Jared Wiley coming off of that injury a year ago.
07:47He's in a real battle for the final tight end spot and the roster spot on this team.
07:51Mahomes with time again.
07:53Throws outfield.
07:54That's caught.
07:55Brashard Smith had it and dropped it.
07:57Remember, Brashard Smith played most of his college career as a wide receiver.
08:03Last year at SMU, they switched him to running back.
08:06You can see him out there running a pattern.
08:08He looks real natural out there.
08:10Well, we talked to Juju Smith-Schuster this week, and he said,
08:14well, like, who is impressing you?
08:15What young guys have impressed you from a receiver standpoint?
08:17He goes, well, I'm going to tell you a guy that's not even in our receiver room,
08:20and that's for Shard Smith, his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield
08:23and use him as a weapon in the offense when you get some matchups.
08:28Juju said he was very impressed with what he's seen from him in camp so far.
08:32Third and ten for the Chiefs.
08:34Mahomes.
08:35Again, great protection.
08:36Now he'll move to his right.
08:38Looking downfield.
08:40Pump pegs.
08:41Now he'll throw late.
08:42And is the catch made?
08:44It's Juju Smith-Schuster.
08:45Yes!
08:46Juju comes up with the catch and a little Mahomes magic here
08:51in the preseason finale as the drive continues.
08:55Well, it's extending the plays with his feet.
08:58Buying time, buying time, and then, of course, what he's done his entire career,
09:02the accuracy when he's on the move.
09:04Mahomes looking left.
09:05Moving to his left.
09:07We'll throw, and he just gets rid of that one.
09:09Xavier Worthy was the closest receiver.
09:12So much focus is on that left side of the line.
09:17You talk about it, Trepp.
09:18You got Josh Simmons, Kingsley Suamataia.
09:20These are such critical stabs.
09:22It really, with the big picture, finding the long-term answer at left tackle.
09:25They really hope that the first-round pick, Josh Simmons, is that long-term answer.
09:29Well, they think they got a steal with him.
09:31Getting him as late in the first round as they were able to get him.
09:34They thought he was a top ten, top 15 talent.
09:36The fact that he was still there when they picked.
09:38They're excited about his future and excited about how training camp in this season has started off for him.
09:45Mahomes, second and ten.
09:46It's Brashard Smith, and it sets up first and goal for the Chiefs.
09:53Kaquan Brisker makes the tackle for Chicago.
09:57Well, there's no doubt Dave Tobe was telling us the truth.
10:00He said we're going to get him some touches in the return game
10:02and look for him to get a handful of touches on offense
10:05because we need to find out what he can do and how we can utilize him as a weapon on this team.
10:10So, he came up with a tough catch up to see him in that time with a big first-down conversion.
10:15Blazing speed at the combine, 4.3940.
10:19Kareem Hunt in the game, first and goal at the three.
10:22The give is to Hunt.
10:23And Hunt will push the pile, but we'll call it a gain of a half yard.
10:29The line of scrimmage will be the two-yard line.
10:39Well, here comes Pacheco.
10:40Hunt going out of the game.
10:43A healthy Isaiah Pacheco is really going to benefit this offense.
10:47Well, him and Kareem Hunt, that's a good duo right there.
10:54It's a second and goal from the two.
10:55Pacheco is the running back.
10:57Looks like Mahomes is changing the play at the line of scrimmage.
11:02And the give is to Pacheco, and he's in for six.
11:06Touchdown, Chiefs.
11:07Isaiah Pacheco, two-yard touchdown run.
11:11Great start for the Chiefs.
11:12Well, you give the contract extension to Trey Smith
11:15and make him the highest-paid guard in the NFL.
11:18You're down inside the five.
11:19That's a smart decision to run right behind 65, right behind 52.
11:24And how about Suamata'ia on that left side,
11:28continuing to push the line up the field
11:29and give Pacheco an easy touchdown.
11:35Harrison Butker on for the extra point.
11:38Matt Arise of the punter is the holder.
11:41It's Winchester.
11:43The long snapper.
11:44Good snap, good hold.
11:45Kick is on the way, and it is good.
11:48Eight plays, 69 yards, and they get the touchdown.
11:52A little celebrating.
11:54Great to be back home in Kansas City.
11:56And the fourth member of our broadcast team, Matt McMullen.
11:59Thanks, Ari.
12:00Well, a player who I think is the most underrated player
12:02on this team right now is fourth-year linebacker Leo Chanel.
12:05It's his versatility.
12:06He can do just about anything on this defense.
12:09There are some days in training camp this year
12:10where he'd be over with offensive linemen doing one-on-one drills.
12:13Then he'd run over to the other field and pick off a pass and coverage.
12:17We've seen what he can do on special teams with multiple blocked kicks over the years.
12:20And Coach Reed really put it best in our meeting, guys.
12:22His words, Leo is a beast.
12:24That's a heck of a compliment from the head man and his physical tools.
12:29And he's really developed into every down linebacker.
12:33He can do it all.
12:35Maurice Alexander on the return for the Bears.
12:39And he spins out of a tackle.
12:41Good return, but a flag comes in late.
12:44This may back the Bears up a little bit.
12:46Well, just to finish off those Chanel comments last week,
12:52talking to Steve Spagnuolo, he's excited about the different ways they can use him,
12:56the way he's grown as a player, his knowledge of the defense,
12:58and how they can move him around because of that athleticism and size.
13:03And availability.
13:03Never miss the game.
13:04Leo is available every game.
13:06No foul for illegal formation on Kansas City.
13:10First down, Chicago.
13:12And Chanel, the last year of his rookie deal.
13:14Here is Caleb Williams in his second year with the Bears.
13:18He was the number one pick in the 2024 draft.
13:21A lot of expectations in Chicago.
13:24Got the new head coach, new offense.
13:27A lot of expectations, a lot of talent at wide receiver.
13:29They made some key moves on that offensive line as well to try and give him some protection.
13:33First and ten, DeAndre Swift is the running back.
13:37And the ball's on the ground.
13:40And it looked like there was a collision there as the receiver was coming in motion.
13:47Lots of five yards on the play.
13:49Let's see what happens here.
13:50Oh, yeah.
13:52Well, it looks like he tried handing it.
13:54And I don't know if the...
13:57Zacchaeus.
13:58He tried handing it off and Zacchaeus, yeah, just hit him on the hip
14:01and not a good exchange for the Bears,
14:03is not a good start for...
14:05A much different start for them last week against Buffalo.
14:07They looked unbeatable.
14:09Well, and you and I were talking at the break.
14:11We expected that from the Chiefs offense after what happened a week ago in Seattle
14:15for them to come out fired up.
14:17And same thing, expected from the defense because of what happened a week ago.
14:22And then on the reverse of it, the job that the Bears did against the Bills last week, 38-0.
14:30False start.
14:31Offense, number 84.
14:33Five-yard penalty.
14:35Second down.
14:37Spag's one of the best defensive coordinators of this entire generation
14:42that he's been a part of the National Football League.
14:43He likes a lot of the pieces, but they were not okay with what happened last week at Seattle.
14:48He was very vocal about it.
14:49The players were very vocal about it.
14:51So, you knew they were going to come in here with an attitude.
14:54Caleb Williams in some trouble.
14:56Scrambles to his right, looking downfield, and he will throw that to one of his teammates.
15:01Well, we've said it over and over again.
15:10Anytime you can rush four and get pressure and drop seven into coverage,
15:15it makes it so difficult on quarterbacks.
15:18And that time, just a relentless push upfield, collapse that pocket,
15:22and then get into the outside.
15:23It's a foot race with Karloftis, who you know is not going to give up.
15:28Third and 19 for the Bears.
15:31Williams with time.
15:41Now he'll get rid of it, and that is caught.
15:44D.J. Moore makes the catch.
15:46He's about five yards shy of a first down, so the Bears will be forced to punt.
15:50Jaden Hicks there to make the tackle.
15:52Boy, he's been a stud this preseason.
15:56And this is the guy who's the new Justin Reed back there, running the secondary.
16:01Yeah, he was impressive to talk to, just the way he's learned to get a lot of compliments to Justin Reed
16:06and helping him develop and understand the defense and being on the back end now,
16:11trying to get the communication down and make sure everybody's on the same page with their coverages.
16:16Torrey Taylor on to punt for the Bears.
16:19Nico Remigio is waiting at his own 15-yard line.
16:22Remigio really shined in the postseason.
16:25Good-looking punt.
16:27Remigio from his own 10-yard line.
16:30Dances around a little bit and scurries up the sideline.
16:33A flag has come in right near the sideline at the 15-yard line.
16:38And it was a 55-yard punt for Taylor.
16:49During the return, holding.
16:52Receiving team, number 30.
16:56That penalty's half the distance to goal.
16:57First down, Chicago.
16:59Timeout.
17:00We will take a break, but a really good start for the Chiefs.
17:04They get a touchdown in their opening drive, and the defense comes up with a stop.
17:08First down, Kansas City.
17:09Chiefs lead the Bears 7-0.
17:11Mahomes gets it for his second series, and the first one went well.
17:17Yeah, he couldn't ask for it to go any bit better.
17:18You got the running game going with Pacheco.
17:22Mahomes able to push it up the field.
17:23Of course, they were the advantage of getting the double penalty, get a big chunk of yardage.
17:31But when you get down inside that red zone, you got to finish off drives, and they were able to do that.
17:35Rashard Smith will start this series at running back.
17:38Check that.
17:38It's Kareem Hunt, and it's Hunt with it.
17:41And Hunt running hard.
17:43And he gets it close to the 15-yard line.
17:49Gate of 8 on the play.
17:53There's Simmons to the outside, 71, kicking it out.
17:56That allowed Kareem Hunt to get up through the middle.
17:59Suwamata'ia once again.
18:03Obviously, you're going to have some mistakes as a rookie, and you have your left guard as playing a new position.
18:11But the first, so far here in the second series, and that first series looked good.
18:15Quickly out to Rasheed Rice.
18:16Gets a couple of blocks.
18:18First down and more.
18:19As he gets it to the Chiefs' 24-yard line, and you saw some big guys get out there in space to help him out.
18:26Well, and that's always the thing, right?
18:28You see, you can see from that angle, Trey Smith, the right guard, he pulled out to the left, and Kareem Hunt went to the left.
18:35So you're trying to get the flow of the linebackers, and then throw the quick screen out to the right.
18:39You're hoping that the linebackers bite on the guard pulling and the action of the running back,
18:44which allows you to get upfield, which is what they did and got the first down.
18:49Kelsey in motion.
18:50First and ten.
18:53Mahomes play action.
18:55He's taking a shot down the field.
18:56He's got an open receiver who's got the football.
19:00Taequann Thornton with a huge play, and what a throw from Patrick Mahomes.
19:05Well, Mahomes talked to us earlier in training camp about one of the things he worked on was throwing the deep ball better
19:17and giving his guys opportunities.
19:20He wanted to throw the ball higher, and that would allow the fast guys to make adjustments to the ball in the air.
19:26You see the protection on that left side of the line anchored down there,
19:31which allows Mahomes to step into that throw, and Thornton coming to Kansas City to provide that deep thread
19:39is really impressed so far this preseason.
19:4158-yard reception.
19:43Mahomes sets up the screen, and it's dropped by Travis Kelsey.
19:48Well, back to Taequann Thornton.
19:50He's an interesting piece for this team.
19:52Practice squad a little bit last year.
19:54Then he gets a full offseason.
19:56There's no doubt about it.
19:58He's making this 53-man roster, and he gives them another guy that can stretch the field.
20:03Well, and that's the thing.
20:04You know, you're starting to put roster spots together.
20:06You're starting to figure out, yes, he was disappointing in New England.
20:08He didn't live up to what he was hoping for or the team was hoping for,
20:12and now getting a fresh start and taking advantage of his opportunities.
20:17Kareem Hunt, and Hunt again running hard.
20:21He gets it to the 13-yard line.
20:24He'll set up a manageable third down.
20:26Creed Humphrey at center.
20:28Boy, moving people.
20:30The fifth-year man out of Oklahoma.
20:34You got Smith and Humphrey.
20:37These guys develop on the left side.
20:38This offensive line has a chance to be really good.
20:41Well, with Tooney, the last few years, right, that interior three has been the biggest part of this offensive line,
20:47and rotating around with the different tackles.
20:50Now, all of a sudden, you draft to Josh Simmons.
20:53You've got Creed and Trey both under contract.
20:57You're trying to sue Amatai out at that left guard, so there's a chance where you can.
21:01Mahomes in some trouble.
21:04Mahomes scrambling to his right.
21:05Look into the end zone.
21:08Dropped in the end zone by Kareem Hunt.
21:10Really good protection.
21:14Mahomes has had a lot of time here in the first quarter.
21:21Well, to finish the offensive line, just, if you get these guys, this is something you could have a solid offensive line for years to come.
21:29See Trey Smith with the finish there, and then Kareem Hunt with a chance.
21:38Not able to come up with it.
21:39Sorry, Trent.
21:4032-yard attempt here for Harrison Butker.
21:43Near the left hash.
21:46Butker coming off another terrific season.
21:48Kick is on the way, and it is good.
21:51The Chiefs extend their lead to 10-0.
21:54And Mahomes has looked good so far.
21:56He's thrown for 98 yards, and Butker delivers three.
22:00Chiefs lead 10-0.
22:03Special people we saw in that shot.
22:05Matt Kushner, our outstanding producer's family, Sia and Aaron, the little ones there.
22:10Cool to see them here in Kansas City, their first game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead.
22:16Harrison Butker to kick it off.
22:19Well, we got great weather.
22:20Great weather.
22:21Couple of scores on the opening drives.
22:23So far, so good.
22:25Jonathan Owens on the return, and he is buried at the 26-yard line.
22:32And now for players to watch, brought to you by T-Mobile.
22:35Well, Dirt Tranquil has missed most of the preseason with a back injury.
22:38He's not playing tonight, but he's been practicing for the last week.
22:42Jerry Tillery has an opportunity.
22:43His seventh-year player needs to find someone to be able to rotate in on that defense.
22:47He's in right now next to Chris Jones.
22:49And then Christian Fulton, the big free agent signing, hurt his knee and hasn't been able
22:54to practice.
22:55He has also been practicing the last week, but I don't think he's going to play tonight
23:00as well.
23:01But those are some guys I want to see.
23:04Fulton being a sixth-year player, Tillery and Tranquil being seventh-year players.
23:09DeAndre Swift picks up a few yards on first down.
23:12We want to welcome our audience joining us on NFL Network.
23:15Nice to have you guys along for the ride.
23:16Ari Wolf, Tread Green upstairs.
23:19Kimmy Jax, Matt McMullen downstairs.
23:21The regular season finale for both the Chiefs and the Bears.
23:25Good start for the Chiefs tonight on top 10-0.
23:29Second series here for the Bears.
23:34Caleb Williams so far, one for two for 14 yards.
23:37Former USC Trojan.
23:40A little play action.
23:40He's going to get out in the flat to Swift.
23:44And Swift leaps over the Chiefs' defender.
23:47Jamari Conner got hurtled.
23:50Pretty nifty run there from DeAndre Swift.
23:55Yeah, Conner goes to take out his legs, and Swift anticipates that, gets over the top.
24:02Incredibly athletic play out in the open field.
24:07Third and one for the Bears.
24:10They'll keep it on the ground, and DeAndre Swift will get just enough for a Bears first down.
24:27Conner McDuffie, guys on the back end, so important into Steve Spagnuolo's defense.
24:40He asks these guys to throw a lot of versatility.
24:42McDuffie, one of the best outside corners in the league, but he, you know, he needs, they need him in the slot.
24:47He can do it all back there.
24:48First, first down of the night for the Bears.
24:58Play action, object, and they keep it on the ground with Swift.
25:01And Swift is brought down by Mike Pinnell at the 40-yard line.
25:06There was a flag on the play.
25:07Offside, defense, number 95, lined up in the neutral zone, five-yard penalty, still first down.
25:19It goes against Chris Jones, who, one of the most impactful defensive players currently in the National Football League,
25:25and he just seems to have kind of a new perspective, a true vet's perspective,
25:30talking about how much he's really embraced camp, he's embraced being a mentor to guys,
25:34and he really appreciates every single moment out there with these guys.
25:39The 10th year man out of Mississippi State.
25:42Been so critical.
25:43The three Super Bowl titles for the Chiefs.
25:47First and five.
25:48The Andre Swift cuts it back, and he gets it to the 44-yard line.
25:57Gary Tillery, who you mentioned, 99, they're in on the stop for the Chiefs.
26:03Yeah, they're hoping Tillery can be that rotating player.
26:06Spagnolo likes to bring a lot of guys in and out of the game to play different positions.
26:10You see 99 pushing up the field.
26:11I've been watching the rotation, and Pinnell and Tillery have been rotating in that one spot,
26:20and Chris Jones has been anchoring that other spot.
26:25You talked about Jones.
26:27I've been impressed with him all training camp, the way he's worked, the way he's coming to camp ready to go.
26:32Williams in trouble, and he'll be sacked.
26:34Great job on the back end, and they get home.
26:39Charles Amenehu, then Chris Jones bringing the pressure.
26:49Good coverage up the field by McDuffie.
26:52You see only rushing four, able to collapse that pocket.
26:58I'm not sure who they're going to give this sack to, if it'll be Jones or Amenehu.
27:01It looks like a little bit of hand, a little bit of hand, so maybe half beats.
27:05Yeah, definitely Chris is getting at least half of that one.
27:07Yeah, exactly.
27:08Third down for the Bears.
27:13Swift is the running back to the left of Caleb Williams.
27:15Williams going to step up, deliver on time.
27:18Catch is made.
27:19Colson Loveland, but great defense tackle made in open space,
27:23and it's Jaden Hicks again making a play this preseason.
27:27Well, and that's the thing.
27:28He's going to have to play that role that Justin Reed did a year ago.
27:32He's going to have to play some dime.
27:33He's going to have to be down in the box.
27:35He's going to have to cover inside, and that's exactly what he does here.
27:38He's trailing, but he's able to recover and make the tackle short of the change.
27:44Torrey Taylor out for his second putt of the night.
27:47Nico Remigio inside his own 10-yard line.
27:51Taylor's putt, not as good this time.
28:02Remigio from his own 11-yard line.
28:04And Remigio trying to navigate, and he'll be brought down at the 18-yard line.
28:11Let's see here.
28:12What do you think Charles Amenehu thought about what just happened defensively?
28:16How do you feel about it?
28:17Yeah, big smile.
28:18Well, Chiefs with the football and a 10-point lead when we come back.
28:23Chiefs lead the Bears 10-0, 2.26 to go in the first quarter.
28:28Time for the T-Mobile tag board.
28:30The social reaction brought to you by T-Mobile.
28:32How about this Chiefs crowd at a preseason game?
28:36Feels like a party here.
28:37Fans have waited a long time.
28:39It's been since the AFC Championship game since they've had a chance to tailgate and get in here,
28:43and it's awesome to see this huge crowd tonight.
28:45Well, we talked to Aston Jelotti, and he was talking about his first – this was going to be his first experience in Arrowhead.
28:51And we said, well, even though it's the preseason, he was fired up to get in here and experience this.
28:58Mahomes.
28:58Will he take another shot?
29:00Going to Kelsey.
29:02And he connects.
29:04Mahomes to Kelsey.
29:06To the 39-yard line.
29:07T.J. Edwards makes the tackle.
29:0920 yards on the play for Travis Kelsey.
29:17Well, we talked about it in the open, the connection these two have, the historical numbers that they've been able to put up.
29:25Travis, we talked to earlier in the preseason about coming back in better shape, and feels like he's in that spot.
29:31Get it out quickly to Xavier Worthy, and Worthy's trying to show off that speed, makes two guys miss, and picks up the first down.
29:43Well done, Xavier Worthy.
29:44Let's go down to the field and check in with Kimmy Chex.
29:47Hey, guys, as you mentioned, a very loud Arrowhead Stadium here for the final preseason game in Kansas City, and that's for a reason.
29:54This is the very first time that this team has been back in front of this crowd since January.
29:59When we talked to the players ahead of availability this week, linebacker Leo Chanel, he said,
30:04playing at home in Arrowhead, it's crazy because even during the preseason, it's so loud, it feels like it's real.
30:09The energy, the culture, you feel like everyone is in one little bowl.
30:13Now, the guys do feel like they have a chip on their shoulder following that Super Bowl loss.
30:18Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, he said, my favorite quote of all the preseason,
30:22we don't want to play reckless, we want to play relentless.
30:25We're seeing that here on the field tonight with the effort, guys.
30:27We certainly are.
30:28Thank you, Kimmy.
30:30Noah Sewell, third-year man out of Oregon, the injured bear, is over here on the near side, on the Chiefs' sideline.
30:36Hopefully, he's, yep, here he is.
30:37He's getting up on his own.
30:39That's a good sign.
30:42Hopefully, he'll be okay.
30:43We'll keep an eye on him.
30:44Hopefully, he'll return to action shortly because he's, these snaps so critical for so many guys trying to make their respective rosters.
30:52Both these teams have real high expectations going into the 2025 regular season.
30:59Around here, the expectations are simple.
31:01Win the Super Bowl.
31:03That's it, right?
31:04That standard has been set.
31:05Yes.
31:06That standard has been set.
31:08Super Bowl champs.
31:09They've played in five of the last six Super Bowls, winning three of them.
31:13But I sense, and I think you did, too, at camp, there's a real feeling of resolve.
31:18There was a lot of disappointment at the way the season ended.
31:22And I feel like some people have been writing off the Chiefs.
31:24I know that Patrick Mahomes keeps receipts.
31:27I think he's noticed a lot of people saying he's no longer the best quarterback in the NFL.
31:32Let's check on that in a few months.
31:34Yeah, and we already talked about the offseason and the work that Kelsey's put in, the work that Chris Jones has put in.
31:41And, you know, Mahomes, he was very determined.
31:45And you watch him in practice on a daily basis.
31:47And you see the way that he's interacting with teammates and focusing on the details and getting back to the details and the little things.
31:54And, you know, he stressed that from the beginning of training camp.
31:57And, of course, getting the down-the-field throw, which we've already seen several times tonight, he wants it back in the offense.
32:05They went to replay, so it's second and one.
32:08And they pick up the first down.
32:09It's Kelsey.
32:10And he gets inside the 40 to the 39 to two catches for Kelsey on this drive.
32:19How many hundreds of catches on this very route has he had?
32:23It's just an option route, right?
32:24He and Patrick got to be on the same page.
32:26He has a three-way go.
32:27He can sit.
32:28He can break in or break out.
32:29Even sometimes if the safeties are split, you can dip and go up the middle.
32:33I mean, it's got to be hundreds of catches on that one play.
32:39Great job by the offensive line.
32:41Even Patrick enough time to find Kelsey.
32:43Pacheco in the game at running back.
32:45First and ten.
32:48Again, Mahomes, what a pocket.
32:50Now he's going to step up.
32:52He's going to take off and run.
32:53And please slide.
32:54Here he goes inside the 20 and finally slides.
32:58Going to give everybody in here a heart attack.
33:00Were you vocalizing what everybody in here was thinking?
33:03Go down.
33:03Yes, yes.
33:05Nothing to prove here.
33:06But he picks up the first down.
33:09A good scramble there for Mahomes.
33:10But let's check on the flag.
33:19Here we go.
33:20Hands.
33:20Hands to the face.
33:21Defense.
33:23That five-yard penalty out of the end of the run.
33:26First down.
33:27So that will improve the field position by five yards for the Chiefs.
33:35Once again, great protection up front.
33:37Mahomes just stepped up in the pocket and then he saw a gap to go with seven back in coverage.
33:42There was nobody underneath.
33:43And he was able to get away from that first arm tackle.
33:47And he heard Ari up here screaming, slide.
33:50Slide.
33:5118 yards on the play.
33:52He said he weren't going to speed it.
33:54Look, he looked faster there.
33:55Pacheco bounces it to the outside.
33:58Pacheco will set up the Chiefs with first and goal.
34:01That was an ugly fall into the wall.
34:03But glad he popped up right away.
34:09Hard to keep that guy down.
34:10Exactly.
34:11But that was just ugly.
34:12The way he kind of tripped right at the end and fell into the wall.
34:21First quarter is complete.
34:23And what a first quarter for the Kansas City Chiefs.
34:25At home cooking has done them some good as they shine brightly in the first quarter.
34:30And they will take a 10-0 lead into the second quarter.
34:34Our conversation with General Manager Brett Beach coming up after the break.
34:40Omaha Steaks.
34:41We do burgers.
34:42Everyone, strong start for the Chiefs.
34:44They lead the Bears 10-0.
34:45And we're excited for our annual preseason visit with General Manager Brett Beach.
34:49Year 9 for you.
34:50Brett, great to see you.
34:52Glad you could join us.
34:54We've got first and goal for the Chiefs at the 5.
34:58Let's see this play and then we'll start getting into the 25 draft class.
35:06Mahomes to the end.
35:07Oh, caught.
35:09Touchdown Chiefs.
35:10Rasheed Rice gets the score.
35:17Good timing, Brett.
35:18You know, I was going to say, this is a first.
35:21Usually when I come down here, something bad happens.
35:23It's not this year.
35:25It's good for a change to be playing good football.
35:27Yes.
35:28Well, I know the guys were fired up.
35:30The coaches were fired up after last week in Seattle.
35:32They wanted to come out and make an impression.
35:34And both sides of the ball have done that so far.
35:36Yeah, for sure.
35:36I mean, on one end, it is only preseason.
35:40But at the same time, I mean, Coach Breed holds these players at such a high standard
35:43that it wasn't Chiefs football.
35:45And, you know, we had some young guys and we were mixing and matching different units out there.
35:50But it wasn't good football.
35:51So it's good to be back home.
35:53Now, they didn't do us any favors with the back-to-back West Coast trips.
35:57No, they didn't.
35:57I mean, as soon as we got off the plane from Arizona, three days back at St. Joe and back to Seattle.
36:01So I think our guys were a little tired.
36:05But, again, there's no excuses.
36:06You've got to be ready each and every week.
36:08So it's good to come out here and play some good football.
36:09Brent, let's talk about this 2025 draft class led by first-round pick Josh Simmons.
36:14It seems he's made quite an impression during training camp,
36:16and he'll be the starting left tackle in week one.
36:18Yeah, special kid, special athlete.
36:20Obviously, very fortunate to get him.
36:24And, you know, tip of the cap to the kid.
36:27I mean, you know, he did have the knee injury.
36:29And when we were going through the draft process,
36:30our trainer thought that hopefully he'd be ready for at some point maybe a week or two in a training camp.
36:36But, I mean, the kid came ready.
36:37We actually got him up to speed by the end of OTAs.
36:40And he's been off and running since we started at St. Joe's.
36:43But, really, the class as a whole is impressive in regards to these kids coming in, working.
36:49And I really think, and, again, all these kids have to grow and develop.
36:53And it's so early on in their career.
36:55But I really think all these guys, not just our 53-man rosters,
36:58I think most of these guys are 48-man type players and will be active to help us on game day.
37:03Jonathan Owens on the return, and he's brought down to the 29-yard line.
37:07Well, that was the thing.
37:07I was just going to say, you look at all those guys.
37:09We just showed them all that we're in the draft last week.
37:12They've all made an impact.
37:13Yeah.
37:13You know, they've all made an impact here in the preseason.
37:15So, yeah, you're not only 53, but you're talking you're having an impact on game day.
37:19Yeah, and it was good to get Rashard Smith going.
37:23You know, he's one of those guys that really I think he's kind of turned the corner the last few weeks.
37:26And we got him involved early on the return game.
37:29And to see Coach go, you know, right back to him after the first one, that would have been a great catch.
37:33It would have been a tough play.
37:34But to come right back and make a play, I think he's a guy that's going to help us in both the run of the pass game as well as the return game.
37:39Well, we've talked about the draft picks.
37:42We want to talk about the guys that you drafted earlier that now you got re-upped on their next contracts.
37:48That would be Trey you got done, George you got done, Nick you got done first right after the season back in March.
37:54But just getting those anchors of your team done.
37:57Yeah, and really the year before that we got Creed.
37:59So I think it's no secret that in this league everyone is looking to draft, develop, and re-sign.
38:06And we're no different.
38:08And I think what's so special here is just the culture.
38:10And when you get those guys and you grow and you develop them, you know, they're not just great players,
38:15but they're actually leaders and they're mentors.
38:17And all those guys you mentioned, Trent, they're all a big part of not just our success now but in the future.
38:24And the Bears pick up six yards on first down.
38:28Well, we know the next couple of days are both super fun because you're going to put together this 53-man roster.
38:33But also it's one of the hardest times of the year because you're going to have to let some guys go who've done a lot of hard work for you.
38:38Tell us a little bit about the process over the next 48 hours.
38:41Yeah, I mean, really it starts day one at St. Joe's where we're evaluating and grading every practice.
38:45And it becomes a little bit more strenuous as all the teams start playing.
38:50And we're logging and grading players on other teams.
38:52But, you know, we have a young team.
38:55But, you know, we also have a lot of guys with a lot of experience.
38:58And I think, like every year, it comes down to those last two or three positions.
39:03You know, a fourth tight end or a sixth linebacker or a ninth, tenth lineman.
39:06And, you know, fortunately for us, we have guys in the building that I think are viable candidates to compete for those last positions.
39:12But, again, we have a hardworking staff.
39:14And if we can make our team 1% better, we'll obviously try to do that.
39:19How much does the cap cut into that when you're picking out those spots?
39:23Yeah.
39:23You know?
39:23It does.
39:24Yeah.
39:24It does for sure.
39:25I mean, and another thing with the cap, too, I mean, we also have to be cognizant of next year.
39:30And so, I mean, it could say we have X amount of dollars in cap space.
39:32But we're also planning on rolling a large chunk of that over because we have a lot of business to do next year.
39:38Third and one for the Bears.
39:40See if the Chiefs' defense can stop the Bears here.
39:43They will keep it on the ground with DeAndre Swift, and he has enough for a Bears first down.
39:48Well, a lot has been made about the kingdom.
39:50And just your thoughts on it.
39:52Last year, all the video crews, everybody around all the time.
39:56And I've had a chance to watch the whole thing.
39:58I know Ari's watched the whole thing.
39:59I'm sure you've watched the whole thing probably multiple times.
40:03This is the process for you.
40:05I did watch, so I watched everything but Episode 6.
40:08I was going to say, it's still kind of hard to watch that.
40:11I'm sure it is, yes.
40:12When you lose a Super Bowl in that fashion, it's not easy to watch.
40:16But they did a great job.
40:18I mean, going back to what you mentioned earlier, Trent, the work that Kristen Lapis and Words and Pictures and ESPN Disney,
40:24they all did first class all the way.
40:26And I think it's really cool because it just shows you the special type of character people we have in the building.
40:32And, I mean, my favorite episode is the second one with Coach Reed.
40:35I mean, everybody knows it, but he's such a father figure.
40:40And, again, he does so much more for these players outside of the building and their personal lives that really I don't think anyone could imagine.
40:47So it was cool to see them capture that.
40:50Well, it's one thing to hear about it, and it's another thing to visually see it.
40:54It was powerful.
40:55It was.
40:55All right, second and eight for the Bears.
40:58Williams, with time, checks it down.
41:02They complete it.
41:04It's going to be enough for a Bears first down.
41:07Well, before we get into Brazil, this historic run you guys have been on.
41:11Five of the last six Super Bowls.
41:12You've won three Super Bowls.
41:14Do you ever kind of sit back, get in your man cave and think, wow, this is just, I mean, it's off the charts.
41:19You know, it's funny, we were just talking about this, you know, the other day, where when you're in the middle of it, you don't ever feel that you've accomplished anything special.
41:29And you always feel like your roster isn't good enough.
41:31And, I mean, shoot, just a few days ago we were flying back from Seattle, and we were kind of thinking, how are we going to put a roster out there?
41:37I mean, we're terrible, but I think it's one of those things that maybe down the line, after a few years, you can sit and appreciate.
41:44And, you know, I know the Cowboys have a documentary out, too, and we were talking, like, growing up, seeing all those teams,
41:54and then comparing their five-year run with our five-year run, and to think we've actually won more games and accomplished more is crazy,
42:00because, again, I grew up watching those times.
42:02So, what this team, what this organization and the Hunt family has accomplished over the last few years is incredible, and hopefully we can just keep it up.
42:09I was just sitting here as they're talking.
42:10What's crazy to me is every year that you've been GM, the team has won the division.
42:16Every year.
42:17Every year.
42:18So, you know nothing but being the West champs.
42:21Yeah.
42:21Yeah.
42:21Well, with that come a lot of expectations and a lot of pressure, so weighing the good and the bad.
42:26All right.
42:26William's going to take off and run.
42:28Connor's going to try to track him down, and William's out of bounds at the 15th.
42:32So, two weeks from tonight, you'll be in Sao Paulo, a division game.
42:36You've got the Chargers and the teams.
42:38What are your thoughts on week one and the fact that you're playing it in Brazil?
42:41It's exciting.
42:42It's another global stage for our organization, and this is a good start to get us prepared to play the football.
42:49We need to play.
42:50We know how good that team is and how well they're coached.
42:54I mean, those games always come down to the wire.
42:56Yeah.
42:57You know, going to Brazil will be exciting, but it will also be a little nerve-wracking for me,
43:00knowing we have a tough division opponent right out of the gate.
43:02So, hopefully, you know, we go down there and we're prepared to play good football.
43:07Well, and then you've got to turn around.
43:10Come right back and play the Eagles.
43:11Come back and open it home against the Eagles after the long flight coming back.
43:14So, I guess there's an advantage to playing on Friday, giving you a little bit of time,
43:18a couple days as far as getting your time back adjusted.
43:21But then, you know, but then the Super Bowl rematch at home and the home opener.
43:25Yeah.
43:26Yeah, and then it doesn't end.
43:27No, it's for the Giants.
43:28And then right back against the Ravens and the Lions and the Redskins.
43:31So, it'll be fun for the fans, and we'll have to be at our best week in and week out.
43:37Second down for the Bears.
43:39Caleb Williams did some trouble, and he'll just throw that one away.
43:42Pressure was coming from Carlisle.
43:43Well, as you said, you set expectations, you set the standard, and now you've got everybody chasing you.
43:50Yeah.
43:51It's a good position to be in.
43:52Yeah.
43:52And, like I said, I think if we can get through this game healthy and have a little luck on our side,
43:59you know, so much of this has to do with getting hot and staying healthy.
44:04Yeah.
44:04And I think we've been, for the most part, on the right side of things over this run.
44:09And a tribute to the training staff and the work that Burkholder and his crew do.
44:15Third down for the Bears.
44:20Williams looking left.
44:21Now look in middle.
44:22The field will throw.
44:23That's incomplete.
44:24Well defended by the Chiefs.
44:27They threw in some traffic there.
44:30But Benze was the target.
44:33So, before we let you go, because there's a kick coming up,
44:35the most important decision you've made was getting Patrick Mahomes.
44:39And there's been a lot of documentation about how you were watching him on film,
44:43and you said this is our next quarterback.
44:45But just take us back to that decision, obviously,
44:47the most critical decision you've made since you became the GM.
44:50Well, listen, I mean, I think everything's supposed to happen for a reason.
44:54And, you know, from going back to watching him and Coach Poppin' in the office,
44:58but really the whole organization getting behind him
45:01and the work everyone did to make that happen is special.
45:04And we don't take that for granted as a personnel staff.
45:07And we know when we go to work every day, it's not just for the Hunt family.
45:10It's not just for Coach Reed.
45:11It's for Pat and his legacy as well.
45:14Brett Beach, outstanding job is great.
45:16We appreciate you coming in for your annual visit.
45:18We wish you the best of luck this season.
45:19Visit with Brett, and it was nice that they scored a touchdown while he was in the booth.
45:27Yeah, that's always the hardest part is, you know, like you said, some years.
45:32Yep.
45:33There have been some negative plays, and so, yeah, it's always great when.
45:38But good things happen when he's up here.
45:40Remigio gets it across the 35-yard line.
45:43It's a good field position.
45:45Patrick Mahomes is done for tonight.
45:47Gardner Minshew comes out.
45:49And Minshew has had a terrific preseason so far.
45:53124 pass yards, a couple of touchdowns, and Trent, he's had good command of the offense.
45:58He really has, and that's what Matt Nagy talked to us about a week ago,
46:01is just how quickly he's been able to pick up this offense.
46:04Yes, he's been in a number of different systems, but this is a difficult offense to learn.
46:08And being able to transition into that, being able to make audibles at the line of scrimmage,
46:12yes, he's a veteran, but he's picked things up pretty quickly.
46:15But Minshew, he's going to scramble.
46:21And makes a positive play out of nothing, gets just across the 40-yard line before he starts his slide.
46:29Minshew has been productive in his NFL career.
46:31Last year with the Raiders, given the chance to be the starter.
46:36Boy, he had some good moments.
46:37It didn't work out for him.
46:38And now he's here in Kansas City, and I think the hope is he can be the long-term backup for Patrick Mahomes.
46:47Rashard Smith in the game to the left of Mahomes.
46:51Oh, check that.
46:52A Minshew.
46:54And no place to go.
46:55He gets buried in the backfield at the 39-yard line.
46:58So good defense from the Bears.
46:59So good night for Mahomes.
47:028 of 13, 143 yards, and a touchdown.
47:07Kelsey looked good on that last drive.
47:09He had a couple of catches.
47:12Good to see those guys in sync.
47:16Well, and how about the catch by Rasheed Rice on the touchdown throw with the back shoulder in the end zone.
47:22Very similar to the touchdown throw in week one against Arizona that Mahomes made.
47:28But nice stop by Rice.
47:30And they've got a deep wide receiver room this season.
47:33And Rice will be a huge part of it.
47:35He's playing great before he got hurt last year.
47:37Minshew on third down.
47:39The throw to Gordon, and it's incomplete, but a flag's coming in.
47:45Trey Flowers, 37.
47:48Contact before the ball got there.
47:50I think it's going to be a hold, not pass interference.
47:58Pass interference, defense number 37.
48:07The ball he plays in the spot of a foul, automatic, first down.
48:10That's better for the Chiefs than it was pass interference.
48:13He was holding him there.
48:15He had the jersey.
48:17Well, anytime you get that back arm wrapped around the body,
48:20and that's what the back judges are looking for.
48:22Those back officials are looking for that arm wrap.
48:29Mid-shoot to give to Smith.
48:31And Smith falls forward for about two and a half yards on first down
48:37as they try to find ways to make Rashard Smith a playmaker in this offense.
48:42But last year without Isaiah Pacheco,
48:45there weren't a lot of explosive plays in the running game.
48:48So they're looking, how do you get explosive plays back?
48:50Well, you've got a healthy Pacheco,
48:51and Rashard Smith can be that guy for this game.
48:54Yeah, he's a big hitter.
48:54Whenever you can get him in the open, every time he touches the ball,
48:58you know, he can take it the distance.
48:59You've already mentioned his speed and what he ran at the combine,
49:01and the fact that he was a receiver earlier in his career,
49:05it gives another dimension of speed to this offense.
49:07Mid-shoot.
49:09Throw wide open receiver.
49:11There were nobody near Remigio,
49:13and Remigio is inside the 10.
49:16There is a flag down on the field.
49:18Well, there's two different spots.
49:20So one back here by the backfield,
49:22which looks like it may be a holding on the Chiefs,
49:23and then one up in the defensive secondary.
49:36There are two fouls on the play, one on each team.
49:39Holden, offense number 66, illegal contact, defense number 44.
49:46Those penalties offset.
49:48Replay, second down.
49:50Mike Caliendo guilty for the Chiefs.
49:53Noah Sewell, who was injured earlier,
49:55so great that Sewell's back out there for the Bears.
49:57That's good news for Bears fans.
49:586'25 and counting, first half on a beautiful summer night in Kansas City.
50:07Second and eight, and he's going to get going on.
50:11Second down for the Chiefs.
50:12Three receivers to the right, one to the left.
50:18Menchu.
50:18One to the right.
50:21The Chiefs.
50:23One to the right.
50:25We're at number 44.
50:28Larry picking.
50:29The Chiefs.
50:30universalamps.
50:30One to the right.
50:31One to the right.
50:32One to the right.
50:34One to the left.
50:37One to the right.
50:38Two off.
50:39One to the right.
50:41The Chiefs.
50:41굁act rations.
50:42Two the Eros.
50:43One to the right.
50:44One to the right.
50:45Two or the right.
50:47Ten to the right.
