00:00:14a row.
00:00:14Got a little bit of work to do today, but that team is coming around nicely as well, Chris.
00:00:17Yeah, remember, no more win and you're in. Top 16 drivers do get in. That stays intact.
00:00:21So the next ten, really 16, but who's on the fringe?
00:00:24Joey Logano just outside that top ten with Brad Keselowski behind him.
00:00:28And SVG, he was fifth going into last week's race, but he slid all the way to 16th in that
00:00:34final spot to make the chase.
00:00:35That's how quickly things can change.
00:00:37Yeah, you see his teammate, Ross Chassain, at the bottom of that list.
00:00:40It's been a tough year for Trackhouse. SVG, you mentioned it, got off to a pretty good start,
00:00:44but the speed just doesn't seem to be there right now compared to what they've had in years past.
00:00:48And Carson Possevar looking for that first win, making a lot of noise, hoping to work his way up.
00:00:53All right, let's get the gas or pump the brakes.

00:12:07FS1 welcomes you to the Goodyear 400 from famed Darlington Raceway in South Carolina.
00:12:15It's a new horsepower and downforce package, but it's the same old Darlington, and DW will
00:12:21be the first to tell you.
00:12:22Job one is race the racetrack.
00:12:25Keep on rockin', keep on rockin'.
00:12:28This is a very unique track.
00:12:30I think that's a feather in everyone's cap to be able to win at this place.
00:12:32It is a place that I think experience plays in your hand.
00:12:36Looking back on my first race, way overconfident, and the track quickly told me how little I
00:12:41knew.
00:12:41Typically, the experienced guy will take care of his equipment a little bit better.
00:12:45Some cars will eliminate themselves.
00:12:48If you can be close enough to the front to be the first one to capitalize on those type
00:12:51of things, it can work out.
00:12:52My first start here, finish second in an Xfinity race.
00:12:56If you're good, you're good.

00:13:10Not a lot of luck in the Cup Series, but we'll discuss that later.
00:13:16Toyotas, 2311 have the front row.

00:13:22But Clint, that's about all we know.
00:13:24Well, I tell you what we know.
00:13:25As you just heard, Michael Walsh and DW, they were out there talking to these drivers.
00:13:30They're all concerned about the low downforce, more horsepower.
00:13:34Hot and slick today.
00:13:35They're going to be slipping and sliding around.
00:13:36It's on everybody's radar.
00:13:38We're worried about it, and that's good news for us, Kent.
00:13:41I'm not worried about it.

00:13:45Everything that they keep talking about it is exactly what we want to see, but it's
00:13:49an opportunity.
00:13:50And you look at guys that qualified up front like Brad Kozlowski, Chris Buescher, Chase

00:13:55We got some of those Gibbs cars in the back with a 54 of Ty Gibbs and Christopher Bell.
00:14:01We've got this field all mixed up.
00:14:03But the opportunity for a guy like Brad Kozlowski, who has a great track here at Darlington, can
00:14:08take that and capitalize on it if they hit it today.

00:14:13I struggled here.
00:14:14Had speed.
00:14:15Ran up front.
00:14:16Ran in the top five.
00:14:17I couldn't capitalize.
00:14:18Couldn't get the deal done at the end of the day.

00:14:21Had trouble in the pits.
00:14:23Made mistakes.
00:14:23You cannot afford to make mistakes at this racetrack.
00:14:26It seems that this track favors veterans.
00:14:29And Denny Hamlin starts in the top ten today, and so does Kyle Busch.
00:14:32Well, it does favor experience, and you have to take care of your equipment.
00:14:36I always felt like I could come here and not pass anybody and run up front.
00:14:40But you've got to put yourself in a position with the right side of the car, no mistakes
00:14:44when you start that third stage to be able to have a chance to win this race.
00:14:48Wait a minute.
00:14:48You never pass anybody and stayed up front?
00:14:50It must be Darlington.
00:14:51A lot of times my pit crew was doing good.
00:14:52My car, everybody else was crashing, and I was just making laps.

00:16:11Well, we see that .45 on the pole today, but we also saw it hit the fence on that pole
00:16:17lap, and you were still able to get after it and qualify first.
00:16:20What's the balance between speed and risk today for you?
00:16:24Yeah, I think it's probably more minimized risk for a while here, for sure.
00:16:32Yeah, like I said, not at all qualifying, that's for sure.
00:16:35So, yeah, just try and take care of the right side of this Xfinity Toyota Camry.
00:16:41I did a pretty good job of that in practice, and I was not nice to it in qualifying.
00:16:44So, I'll try and earn the car's trust back a little bit here at the beginning.
00:16:49Well, you did a great job in both categories yesterday.

00:16:58Tyler Reddick has his second Darlington pole, and his teammate Bubba Wallace, a new girl
00:17:04dad, this last week.

00:17:06Darlington, one of his best tracks.
00:17:09Row two, you see Chase Elliott from Dawsonville, Georgia, and a guy we expect to be right in
00:17:14the mix today, Kyle Larson.

00:17:18Well, surprisingly, six races into the season, and Hendrick Motorsports has yet to enter victory
00:17:24lane.
00:17:24The guy to do it, that might be Chase Elliott and this nine team.
00:17:27Off to their best start in nearly a decade.
00:17:30They qualified third today and coming off their best finish of the season.
00:17:35I talked to the team earlier today, and they told me they got that car dialed in to where
00:17:39they feel like they could be a race-winning car if they make the right adjustments.
00:17:42What's more, you make a lot of pit stops in this race, and this pit crew, one of the best
00:17:46in the garage.
00:17:47Look for them to be a big-time factor here today.
00:17:54All right, row number three is owned by RFK.
00:17:57The owner, as a matter of fact, Brad Keselowski and his driver, Chris Buescher.
00:18:02Row number four, a couple potential winners there, Ryan Blaney's Ford and Kyle Busch's Chevrolet.
00:18:07Here's Jamie Little.
00:18:08Ryan Blaney has been the most consistent Ford week in and week out.
00:18:13In talking to this team, they're hopeful they'll keep that streak alive.
00:18:16This same rules package we've been talking about today ran two weeks ago at Phoenix.
00:18:20Well, the winner of that race was Ryan Blaney.
00:18:23Now, yesterday in practice, they had to make a lot of changes to get him comfortable.
00:18:27The task at hand today is going to be big.
00:18:29Watch for lots of adjustments all day long.
00:18:32All right, continuing with our Goodyear starting grid, row five, Denny Hamlin, last week's winner,
00:18:37and a five-time Darlington winner, and Austin Dillon, who started top ten here the last two trips.
00:18:43The rest of our lineup will be on the pylon.
00:18:47Let's skip all the way down to row 12.
00:18:48That's where we'll find Chase Briscoe.
00:18:50Here's Regan Smith.
00:18:52Well, Mike, it's been an interesting start to the season for Chase Briscoe.
00:18:56Tons of speed, good execution, but terrible luck early on.
00:18:59Well, last week they had that same speed.
00:19:01Unfortunately, the execution was not there.
00:19:04It cost them what could have been a really solid result somewhere inside the top five.
00:19:08That execution problem continued yesterday, qualifying struggles through turn one,
00:19:12relegated him to a 23rd place starting position.
00:19:14But if there's a track this team knows they can dig out of the hole,
00:19:17it's right here at Darlington.
00:19:18Chase Briscoe won the past two Southern 500s in the fall here
00:19:22and led 309 laps last time that we were here.
00:19:25They feel good about what they got today.

00:19:28All right, more horsepower, less downforce.
00:19:31Our crew chief, Larry McReynolds, breaks it all down for you.
00:19:34Well, Mike, you have hit it hard.
00:19:36Race number six of the season.
00:19:37This is the third race we'll be running this low downforce, more horsepower package.
00:19:42But it's the biggest oval we'll be on with it this year.
00:19:44So let's go to our Toyota Camry cutaway car,
00:19:46and I'm going to show you some of the elements that's involved.
00:19:49Let's start under the hood, the tapered spacer with engine horsepower.
00:19:54Last year here at Darlington, 670 horsepower.
00:19:58But look at today, the size of those holes.
00:20:00Today, 750 horsepower.
00:20:03Now let's go to the rear of the race car,
00:20:05and let's look at a couple elements back there.
00:20:07Let's start with a rear spoiler that's on the back of the deck lid.
00:20:10Last year here, 4-inch tall rear spoiler.
00:20:13Today, 1-inch shorter.
00:20:14Only 3 inches tall.
00:20:15But a big deal is the rear diffuser.
00:20:17Last year, look how big that rear diffuser is.
00:20:19The strikes, the fins.
00:20:21But today, a simple rear diffuser.
00:20:23Much smaller, fewer strikes and fins.
00:20:25Now, there's less downforce in the front as well,
00:20:27but the effect with horsepower and rear downforce.
00:20:3080 more horsepower, 400 pounds less rear downforce.
00:20:33That's a 40% reduction.
00:20:35Guys, drivers have always had their hands full at Darlington.
00:20:38This takes it to a whole new level.
00:20:40Well, you're exactly right, Larry.
00:20:41And with that more horsepower, that's great.
00:20:44But the thing that is really good about what we're going to see today
00:20:47is less rear downforce.
00:20:49And at Darlington, that creates a complete handful for the drivers
00:20:52that they had with all the downforce, Clint.
00:20:54What you're trying to say, buddy, is we're in for a treat, folks.
00:20:57This is going to be awesome.
00:20:59When Darrell Waltrip retired as a driver,
00:21:01he was third on NASCAR's all-time win list.
00:21:04He won the Southern 500 driving his own car here in 1992.
00:21:10And for 15 years, we sent him into all kinds of crazy places
00:21:14as he and Larry Mack and I called the races for Fox
00:21:17and then another four years with Jeff Gordon.
00:21:19Thanks for making the trip up to the booth and joining us.

00:21:23You know, I look at this racetrack and I think,
00:21:25how did I ever win five races here?
00:21:27But it's a tough track.
00:21:30It really is.
00:21:30And, of course, today with the package they have to run,
00:21:34it's going to be even tougher.

00:22:00And you don't want to do that.

00:23:26Because when they get spread out,
00:23:28it really takes a while to work yourself past them.
00:23:31So, right now, these guys are all trying to get everything they can
00:23:33from a track position standpoint.
00:23:35Well, that's the hard thing, too,
00:23:36is you can't afford to lose track position.
00:23:38Passing's going to be a premium.
00:23:40We heard these drivers talking about it.
00:23:41So, sorting this thing out is one thing,
00:23:43but I don't want to give spots up.

00:23:50the captain leader Tyler Reddick having a little bit of an issue.
00:23:52I believe he said voltage trouble potentially on that 45 car.
00:23:56Hits the bump off a turn two,

00:24:02Yeah, and the one thing that that could be is,
00:24:03you know, especially when these high-speed lapses,
00:24:06you know, something might be loose,

00:24:16when these things are at low air pressure

00:25:00Well, you did most of your passing in turns one and two,
00:25:03which was three and four now.
00:25:06You had to be careful in turns three and four
00:25:08because it was so slick and the way the turn was laid out.
00:25:12If you were not very, if you were not cautious,
00:25:15you'd get up too high, you'd get in a loose duff, you'd spin out.
00:25:19So you just have to really work hard on one and two
00:25:21and take it easy in three and four.
00:25:23And now, you know, three and four that he's talking about is now one and two.
00:25:27I think that the thing that is really hard about that wall,
00:25:30and we saw it in qualifying yesterday,
00:25:31you've got that big notch in the wall
00:25:33where they've all hit the fence so many times
00:25:36that it's hard to follow that wall because it's not straight.

00:25:43Just make sure he's got as much driver cooling stuff off as he can
00:25:47and turn his A.C. down, minimum.
00:25:49I got the A.C. off, probably a sense of a full.

00:25:58and racing here at Darlington is always a full day's work inside the car.

00:26:04and having to turn that off on lap one is not ideal.

00:26:31and the back is behaving like the front should.
00:26:32But I saw him before the driver's meeting, he says,
00:26:34gosh, I hope they got that switched around,
00:26:36but have a look at the 60 car here.
00:26:39Yeah, we thought he should just drive it in reverse
00:26:41and see if he had a better opinion,
00:26:43but it was definitely a handful yesterday,
00:26:46and he was pretty adamant that he needed to do something different.
00:26:50And he just touched that apron right there,
00:26:52and since they've repaved turn two over there,
00:26:55that apron is not as friendly as it used to be.
00:26:58The transition is much sharper,
00:26:59and in these cars, it'll actually grab the splitter,
00:27:02and it'll really unload that car.
00:27:04And look, when he moved up,
00:27:06Byron Old that got in the wall off at two.
00:27:08Very narrow racing quarters.
00:27:10They're actually off the racetrack.
00:27:11It's so narrow over there in two.
00:27:17Coming to ten laps complete,
00:27:19Tyler Reddick has lit the ball.

00:27:27Nice to see that turnaround for Keselowski.
00:27:30Last week, he qualified in the trunk.
00:27:32He's not had a lot of great races so far this season,
00:27:35but boy, he sure turned his season around yesterday in qualifying.
00:27:39Yeah, well, when you qualify up front,
00:27:40it allows you to make adjustments on your car
00:27:42with the cars that are racing in the front of the track
00:27:45instead of trying to survive for your life
00:27:47and make it through the field.
00:27:48So as we ride on board as Ford Racing on board right here,
00:27:52this is one of Brad's best tracks,
00:27:53and I believe a day that he can really capitalize on,
00:27:57you know, qualifying in the front
00:27:58and having a chance to win
00:27:59like we've seen him do so many times here.

00:33:07Now, he had to start in the back because he got into the wall yesterday, and they had
00:33:10to replace a right front upper control arm.
00:33:13And when you do that, you forfeit your starting spot.
00:33:16Well, they all better get going back there because Reddick has clean track, and he is
00:33:21running them down really quick and being able to get to the back of the pack.

00:33:25Yeah, we already were 20 laps in, Kevin.
00:33:27And as we see, the pace has already slowed down about two and a quarter seconds.
00:33:31One thing I've watched Tyler Reddick do for about the last eight to 10 laps, he's a little
00:33:36smoother with the throttle, but he's not being able to go wide open with the throttle.
00:33:41He's only going about 80 to 90 percent, where obviously I'm going up against right now, watching
00:33:45Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson.
00:33:47They don't stay 100 percent long because they can't, but he's not really going wide open
00:33:52throttle.
00:33:53Yeah, and that's where he beat them in practice, whether it was a short run or a long run.
00:33:58He was beating those guys in practice through turns one and two.
00:34:01His car was a little bit freer, but he would keep that car loaded up with partial throttle
00:34:05where everybody else would try to spike the throttle halfway through the corner.
00:34:09He's holding that partial throttle all the way to the exit of the corner and just taking
00:34:14that partial throttle mid-corner speed.
00:34:16Now, in these 23 laps we've run, lap times have slowed about two seconds from the fastest
00:34:21lap of the day so far.
00:34:24Chase Briscoe started 23rd, one here in the fall.
00:34:28He's picked up five spots.
00:34:30They're trying to climb out of a point standings hole, and we listened in on their team meeting
00:34:35this morning.
00:34:36All right, so yeah, based on what we saw yesterday, right now it still kind of looks like it'll
00:34:42probably be a one-stop through the first two stages, and we just got to, you know, pick
00:34:46our way off and not shoot ourselves in the foot and go backwards at any point.
00:34:49I feel like we had a, you know, decent car in practice, and obviously we plugged it in
00:34:52the fence in qualifying, which wasn't ideal.
00:34:54So, just got to have a smooth day and get ourselves where we need to be in points.
00:34:59So, you know, I know we were really good on pit road here last year, so if we can repeat
00:35:02that, you know, we'll be in good shape.

00:39:46And right now, he is using a lot of driver IQ to be meticulous on the racetrack, as the crew
00:39:51chief told me that they would have to do today.

00:40:31It's actually gone backwards, and you hear right there the back of the car just not in the track.

00:40:38Is there anything worse at Darlington than a car that won't grip the racetrack at either end?
00:40:42Well, what the problem is, is I think some of these guys are running the same setup they ran here
00:40:48before,
00:40:49and I think that's probably messing with the car because I think you have to change the setup because the
00:40:55car is looser.
00:40:57You've got less spoiler.
00:40:58You've got more down.
00:40:58You've got more horsepower.
00:41:00So I think they need to adjust to the car to the track rather than the track to the car.
00:41:06Yeah, and it's one of those things where, you know, they had to try to change the car to the
00:41:12aero pieces that they have on the car this time around.
00:41:15So it's a pure guess until you actually get them in the race and start racing them.

00:41:19Yeah, Kevin, this stage is 90 laps.
00:41:23So if you split it right down the middle, that's lap 45, which is 10 laps from now.
00:41:28And I think that's what a lot of people's thinking.
00:41:30That way they get advantage of both sets of tires in this run right here.
00:41:34But I do believe what you might see here in about five, six laps, you may see some starting to
00:41:39come a little bit early.
00:41:41Well, I think I'd pit early.
00:41:44If my car was not very good, I'd have to pit early and get me some tires and try to
00:41:48tighten the thing up.
00:41:49Yeah, but you're a driver.
00:41:50You want four tires as many times as I can give them to you.
00:41:52Well, I know, but then you've got to have one.
00:41:54You've got to have tires.
00:41:55I'm also behind, and that's going to help me.
