02:48In the winter, there's a dog race with no major reward to it.
02:52Where the dog only follows you to the end if you threw the ball with him every day for the whole year.
02:57Otherwise, you run to the end without him and wish that pausing ended the race immediately.
03:03Because then it ended a lot faster.
03:06It's too bad the race doesn't end automatically if every other dog wins, because that'd be faster.
03:12It was fun the second time when I was actually able to win.
03:15I haven't read that it's entirely luck-based if you win.
03:19I won effortlessly in the second try.
03:22So it's a superior alternative to the Frisbee tournament.
03:26It's annoying that you have to stop running for a little bit multiple times in order to win.
03:32But whatever.
03:33So in this game, the dog ball actually has a reason to exist.
03:37You can throw the ball where you can't pick it back up.
03:41This makes it suck that you can't simply get a new dog ball from his shop.
03:45You have to hope he sells it to you at your door.
03:48And that's when it comes in handy that he'll still try to sell you another one even if you already have one.
03:54The horse's affection isn't raised by talking to it.
03:58I wasted two seasons on that thinking I didn't need to brush it.
04:02You get to see dancing at the New Year's Day festival.
04:06That's a nice novelty the first time.
04:08But it lasts long enough to become a repetitive waste of time.
04:12There's a goddess festival in the spring.
04:14So every year your wife wastes your time expecting you to take her to it.
04:19The horse is worse because you have to get on your horse every day for a whole bunch of days to build up a stamina meter for it.
04:27You'll have to go out of your way to do that.
04:29And after all of that it was still for nothing.
04:33So it sucks that you have to win a horse race to get a powerberry.
04:38Both of the races in this game start out by telling you every participant.
04:42Which is a boring waste of time.
04:45This game and the remake can do this stupid participants can't bet rule.
04:50Except by the time you get to that point you can't benefit from it anyways.
04:54And Rick traps you in the chicken festival until he's decided to start it.
05:00When I went to the festival I didn't have the chicken in my hand.
05:03I have to hand my chicken over to Rick.
05:06And there was literally nothing I could do to enter it even with a code.
05:10Apparently, you have to plant over 99 flowers and leave the house at noon to get a powerberry.
05:18Which lazily rips off 64 but exaggerates the amount of effort and wasted profit.
05:25It turns out you get honey from growing pink cat flowers.
05:29Which you'll never grow anyways without a god.
05:33Why do you have to unlock honey on your tree?
05:35Lewis increases the sale price of your honey by 10 measly G.
05:42Only after you do something you'd never do and plant a bunch of these flowers and then give them honey.
05:47Which you'll only do after you buy everything.
05:50So it doesn't matter.
05:51Sure would have been useful to have this honey for the sprites early in the game.
05:56It wasn't a big loss that you didn't make it to the remake.
06:00Most Harvest Moon characters are one dimensional.
06:01They don't bother me but I'm not invested in or impressed by them.
06:05It's no wonder they were dropped for more memory in the cartridge.
06:09Since they wasted that memory on ridiculous amounts of floors and jewels.
06:15At least it's great that Gautz has a friend.
06:17At least I assume he's his friend because he lives with them.
06:21It's too bad he doesn't have any events with them.
06:23The exclusive villagers don't get the doubt they should considering their roles in the town.
06:27So it's lame that they didn't get that in the remake.
06:32The cow festival doesn't take place in the square.
06:35So at first I instinctively tried going there for nothing and barley stopped me because it was taking place where I already was.
06:41The same can be said about the sheep festival.
06:44Maybe the game warns me about this the day before.
06:46But this franchise has such a recurring habit of telling you stuff you already know or would have found out effortlessly anyways that you're not trained to pay attention to the person telling you about the festival tomorrow.
06:57Especially since it's usually the same time and place for everyone.
07:00When you enter an animal in a festival she doesn't return the same day so you don't have to feed the animal for two days.
07:12Trading can be done.
07:14So you can use it to duplicate your animals by trading with their own save files.
07:18Cool.
07:20But using a glitch that's got nothing to do with the normal gameplay to make money defeats the point of playing the game.
07:25That would be like if I used save states to get rich off the Harvest Gods minigame from the first few days of Friends of Mineral Town.
07:33You're better off using a code to get rich at that point instead of putting yourself through a long stretch of boredom just to cheat.
07:40Might as well do that instead.
07:42Money exploits are only good for the playthrough after the first one where you already bought everything.
07:48Fishing rod upgrading is different.
07:49To get the one better fishing rod, you're forced to have 50 fish in the pond to impress the fishermen.
07:57A ridiculously huge amount considering how slowly the fish breed and even taking it all day gets barely any fish stump.
08:06So it takes so long to get the fishing pole that you won't get it until you bought everything else in the game.
08:11It's a lot more work than how the remake doesn't.
08:14By the time I got the fishing pole I just started the winter in the second year.
08:18Winter caused me to have a code on that has it rain every day that's not a festival because weather codes are the only way I can prevent my hothouse from being destroyed.
08:27I only had to do this because in this game you can't change the weather the next day if you stayed up past midnight as usual.
08:34And having to go back to the save state from before midnight would be undoing a lot of progress.
08:38I wonder why talking to Kai for the first time in the inn gives me an option to ask him to the fireworks display.
08:46When I'm not a girl and I'm married.
08:48I chose yes to see what happened.
08:51Why did my character know to ask that?
08:53You can't watch the fireworks with both Kai and your wife.
08:58So you're going to be worried about your wife getting mad at you if you watch it with him.
09:01And he doesn't show up at the fireworks festival at all.
09:06And I couldn't go into the inn on the festival day.
09:09It turns out I was supposed to go to the square from Yoda Ranch after 6pm.
09:15Why do I have to let a typhoon happen before I can trigger an event with Kai on the beach?
09:20Ignoring the usual problem for events that only a guide would tell you to go there.
09:24I'd have never gotten the event the first year when I could have benefited from it most.
09:29Why do they have Kai have a love potion?
09:32It looks like a perfume so I guess it's just a name.
09:34But how'd they not realize someone might get worried that the reason he's a ladies man is because it's a literal love potion?

09:42You can only get it from one event in my experience.
09:45I think you can get only one of it.
09:48So it's not like this for the sake of balance.
09:51Another one of the events that's new is Kai asking me for corn.
09:55Apparently this happens even if I don't have any corn growing.
09:58And when I went into my house trying to get some from my fridge,
10:02the game crashes every single time I try to do that.
10:07A tomato throwing festival is in this game.
10:09It's interesting because it sounds so mean-spirited for a Harvest Moon game,
10:12but it's worth it to have the chance to throw tomatoes at the characters you hate.
10:16Except the second you try to throw a tomato, you'll get hit with one and instantly get kicked out of the game.
10:21Why did they think giving you only one hit point was a good idea?
10:26It doesn't last long enough to be fun because I didn't get a chance to hit rent.
10:30It ended immediately because I pressed A immediately.
10:34It's a luck-based minigame because it reliant on teammates.
10:36So you better pick the right team.
10:40I can't find any info on the reward for this festival specifically,
10:44so it's not a big deal if you lose it.
10:47When I try it a second time and press X instead of A,
10:50the first time I still lost immediately.
10:52I wish the hiding behind a barrel function was mapped to more than one button,
10:57because that'd be easier to do it when you're just getting used to the minigame.
11:01I know it's not the game's fault, but I'm using an Xbox 360 controller,
11:06so when the mayor tells me the controls, he's making it gibberish to me.
11:10Another reason the swimming festival sucks.
11:13I know what the X button does, I have it mapped to A.
11:16The minigame doesn't give you any time where it's safe to test out what button does what.
11:21If you don't know how to hide right away, then you're instantly out of the game.
11:25Why in the world is hiding mapped out a button instead of the control stick anyways?
11:30Another reason the minigame kinda sucks is that your team can still lose,
11:34even though you were never hit by a tomato.
11:37But it is kinda fun when you do hide right away.
11:41When you can actually last for a decent amount of time in it.
11:44It's just annoying how much you have to hide.
11:49When Zack finds out you have nothing to ship,
11:52he doesn't waste your time trying to tell you how to earn money,
11:55which is better for the pacing when you don't have to ship stuff anymore.
11:59It's random whether you trigger rival heart events,
12:01which can suck when you actually want them to happen.
12:04I'm mainly thinking about potpourri's events.
12:08I went to the beach at 9am multiple times in the third year,
12:11and only then did Kai's two events trigger.
12:14I saw nothing on the internet specifying what day of the week it had to be.
12:18The first one took me several days to trigger,
12:21and he'd been at high affection the whole time.
12:24Playing this game reminded me that both this game and Friends of Mineral Town,
12:29you need potpourri to be an orange heart for an AmeriKai.
12:33Yeah, that makes total sense.
12:35So that was a lot of work.
12:36It took several days in-game of doing nothing but giving her her favorite gift.
12:42Thank goodness it's as fast as that,
12:45because it can still increase affection after the first gift.
12:48If this was the remake, I would have had to wait another year.
12:51But it still felt like it took forever.
12:54But because it only takes a week,
12:55it's way better in this game.
12:58After the rival events where the doctor was in the confessional,
13:02my game soft-locked the first time I tried to see it.
13:06My game's also frozen a few times in the hot spring before I changed back-enders.
13:10I want to know if that happens on original hardware.
13:14I've never read anyone complain about that.
13:17Cursed tools aren't a thing to put up with in this game.
13:20And there are no mythic tools in this game.
13:23So even the best watering can doesn't water everything you can see in front of you.
13:29There's no record player.
13:31That normally sucks,
13:32but doesn't matter to me,
13:34because I always play these games on mute listening to videos anyways.
13:37Golden Lumber can't be gotten.
13:41Good.
13:42It was a pointless waste of your time.
13:45You can only own one house.
13:48For the sake of completionists, good.
13:51An extra house is a useless novelty,
13:53and you'll never unlock one in the remake anyways.
13:57Jewel of Kappa, Jewel of Truth, and Teleporter Stone aren't in this game.
14:02That sucks,
14:03but I can buy everything but the townhouse before getting any of those.
14:06And most of them aren't nearly useful enough anyways.
14:11More importantly,
14:12it's a huge pain in the ass to get them.
14:15You could have saved a lot of time
14:17by just not bothering to get the Teleport Stone.
14:21It could take several hours in real life to get it.
14:23So how many times would you have to use it
14:26for the save time to make it make up for that?
14:30It's probably a ridiculous amount of time.
14:33The game ends the first spring of year four
14:35if you somehow didn't get married
14:37and didn't have your dog at six affections,
14:40even though the game never tells you
14:42it went back to the first game in the series in that respect.
14:44This problem doesn't matter
14:46because everyone's going to get married in this game.
14:49In the Japanese version,
14:50it has the usual requirement for the good ending for the series.
14:54The Japanese version had several bad endings.
14:57One for having less than 20% of the field cultivated.
15:01Which is unfair because by that point
15:03you would have had no reason to keep farming and ranching for years,
15:06so most of your farm would be weeds.
15:09Though you would have had more than enough money
15:10to buy enough grass seeds for this.
15:13It'd still be tedious to have to deal with this though.
15:16But most people didn't play the Japanese version of the game,
15:19so nothing it did count against Back to Nature as a whole.
15:22I'm sure most of the fans didn't play Harvest Moon 2
15:25because it's on the Game Boy.
15:27So they would have thought something changed
15:28since the previous games where this was still a requirement.
15:33So that was Back to Nature.
15:35It's got enough differences
15:36and it might as well be a whole new game
15:38as far as these reviews are concerned.
15:41It's pretty obvious that Friends of Mineral Town is better.
15:44Why would you want to play a version of Friends of Mineral Town
15:46where you have to buy flour one at a time
15:49and it takes longer to put stuff in your bank?
