00:01Previously on Project Runway All Stars...
00:03We want you to create a summer look that is sophisticated with a badass edge.
00:09That is exactly the girl I designed for.
00:11Not the most well-made dress. Definitely not.
00:13This is a summer look.
00:15Maybe make them into shorts? That would be great.
00:19You remind me of a fabulous insect. She is serving you.
00:23I love the deconstructed nature of it and the innocent quality.
00:28The winning designer is... Emily!
00:31To me, the slit is just a little high.
00:37It's supposed to be a summer dress, but the coloration of it does not give me summer.
00:43It's just so moderate, the whole thing.
00:45The designer eliminated tonight is... Asha.
00:51This is Project Runway All Stars.
00:58Okay, where are we going?
01:01We're in the cool part of Channel Arts District.
01:03This week, Alyssa asked us to meet her at the Agora Gallery.
01:06This is really awesome!
01:08I love to paint. I love art. I'm so excited to see what this challenge is going to be.
01:13Hi, designers.
01:15Hi, Alyssa.
01:16Welcome to the Agora Gallery.
01:18This is an exclusive showing of the work of some of New York's cutting-edge artists.
01:24This week, your challenge is to create a wearable piece of art.
01:32And to really push the fashion envelope, this is the Avant Garde Challenge.
01:37Yay!
01:39I love doing Avant Garde.
01:40I like to think out of the box all the time, and this is my time to really shine to the judges.
01:45Avant Garde is all about innovative, experimental, and out-of-the-box thinking.
01:49I'm a ready-to-wear designer, so Avant Garde is extremely out of my element.
01:54But I'm interested in it because it's going to cost me to step out of my comfort zone.
01:59Because we want really dramatic looks, your mood budget is the biggest of the season so far.
02:05$400 each!
02:07Yay!
02:08And you have two days in the workroom.
02:11Yes!
02:12Our guest judge this week is a walking work of art.
02:16He's a music icon, and a fashion icon, and practically defines Avant Garde.
02:23It's Boy George.
02:24No way!
02:25No way!
02:27No way.
02:28As a teenager, I was all about Boy George.
02:31Oh my god.
02:32I love the iconic hat with the dreads that he wore with, like, black eyeliner.
02:37In my time, I wanted to be like that.
02:39The artists will be here soon, so you can ask them about their process.
02:43Find something that really inspires your own wearable work of art.
02:47Boy George and I will see you on the runway in two days.
02:51Good luck.
02:54High five!
02:56Yeah!
02:57I'm really excited to be surrounded by so much great artwork, and we get to speak to the artist.
03:03Hi!
03:04Good job.
03:05I feel right at home.
03:06Did you do the owl?
03:07I did, yeah.
03:08I love it.
03:10I can't stop looking at this owl.
03:12It's called digital taxidermy.
03:14It's kind of like taking a moment and making it last forever.
03:17He's captured this moment that, like, stands in time, and I'm really getting inspired by, like, the way that he's saying that.
03:25She is her own being. She has her own personality.
03:28What's the name of this piece?
03:29Warrior Skirt.
03:30Nice.
03:31I like to do a lot of work in women empowerment.
03:33She's really into strong women who are still in touch with their femininity.
03:38Totally me.
03:39Oh, you're still finishing?
03:40Yeah, still feeling it.
03:41I like the transformation from one to the other.
03:44I'm really drawn to these mosaic pieces on the walls because from far away, they're very distinct animals.
03:52And then as you get closer to them, you can see that they're actually cut up and dissected metro cards.
03:57I take lots of different kinds of fabrics and put them together.
04:00So I, like, love and respect.
04:01Like a quilt.
04:02Exactly.
04:03We have this image of the queen.
04:05Mm-hmm.
04:06But now, you cut past that.
04:07The concept of the queen is what's important, and anyone can be the queen.
04:11The painting right in front of me really inspires me with the color palette.
04:14I like how it's almost effortless, but yet you can still see a figure.
04:19It's really strong.
04:20I really feel like women need to own their beauty.
04:23That is amazing.
04:24That's my calling.
04:25The artist is all about women empowerment, and that's the woman I dress.
04:30All right, well, good luck.
04:31Nice to meet you.
04:32I hope you both went.
04:33Thank you so much.
04:34Have a good one.
04:40I'm going to do a kind of mosaic dress that's going to be very sculptural.
04:45I'm doing these pieces around her neck and shoulders and arms that are going to be edged in print.
04:52The way that she did the makeup and how the hair and everything mixes, it really made me think of, like, a large open weave fabric.
04:59So I'm going to cut strips and make giant spaghetti and then weave them together so it's like a big sweater that's coming unraveled.
05:10My inspiration is based off of the story of the painting.
05:13This powerful woman shields all of those pains that she have inside of her.
05:19So I'm sketching a cage and these ruffles that would kind of cascade out of the cage.
05:26So it's kind of an illusion of a cage bird trying to escape.
05:32The reason why I picked this painting is because she's basically stripped of her skin.
05:37So I want to create a piece of art on my model.
05:41I'm going to cover her face in black.
05:42I want it to be like she's a mannequin and you can't judge anything and you can just judge the piece itself.
05:49I'm creating this huge bow and I want the skirt to go almost like an upside down triangle.
05:56Just looking at this owl, I really do feel like time is standing still for a moment.
06:01I am the kind of designer that has to react to something emotionally if I'm going to do something avant-garde.
06:08Gay marriage has been legalized throughout the entire country and I am so excited.
06:14This is the perfect moment to capture.
06:16I'm thinking my model is like trapped in like a rainbow flag and it's just like wafting around her.
06:21I really want to make a statement and I want to take a risk here.
06:24How are you guys? Let's go to Mood.
06:26Come on now, get up.
06:27Let's go.
06:31We have 30 minutes, guys.
06:34Woo!
06:35Quick, quick, quick, quick, quick.
06:37I need black gazaar.
06:38I'd much prefer that. It looks richer.
06:40I know I need to find the perfect sheer fabric for this translucent plate that I'm trying to do with the print.
06:48Luckily they have this gorgeous 3D shiny organza.
06:52Give me 10 yards.
06:54And then I head straight downstairs to prints.
06:57This one, this one. Yeah, that's perfect.
07:00Take this entire thing and dump it into my cart.
07:03I have to buy almost the entire paint section of Mood in order to get this dress completely covered.
07:11Oh, and pink.
07:13I come across this pink and black brocade.
07:15It's perfect for the idea that I'm trying to mimic with the painting.
07:19Which is a black background and these colors that are all over it.
07:23Yeah, here I am.
07:24Bring it down, please.
07:25Give it another 6.
07:27I found this amazing black gazaar, which I'm gonna use to create the freeness and the lightness that's gonna be caged with inside of my garment.
07:35Five minutes!
07:36Three ninety eight seven.
07:37Hallelujah!
07:38Thank you!
07:39Bye!
07:40Bye!
07:41Bye!
07:42Bye!
07:43Bye!
07:44Bye!
07:45Bye!
07:46Bye!
07:47Bye!
07:48Bye!
07:49Bye!
07:50I'm excited!
07:51I'm excited!
07:57At this point in the competition, it's really tough.
08:00We're down to five people.
08:02So, sending down okay garments now is not acceptable.
08:09What are you doing?
08:10I'm doing this like optical illusion dress.
08:13Avant Garde pushes the boundaries.
08:15It realigns your thinking of what fashion is or how fashion is supposed to look.
08:21Keeney.
08:22Hmm?
08:23This is insanity.
08:24How many strips do you have?
08:26All these strips, I'm like, and this is only one color.
08:30I totally feel like Emily's grown from our season and she's done amazing things.
08:35Tubes!
08:36I'm happy that she's here, but there's only gonna be one winner.
08:43You know, I don't even remember that in kindergarten.
08:46Remember what?
08:47Mixing colors and stuff in kindergarten.
08:49Did y'all do that?
08:50Yeah.
08:51Well, I did it in art school a lot.
08:53At this point of the competition, Sam is a huge threat.
08:58And it's not for his talent or design-wise.
09:01He just have a certain thing with the judges that we cannot put our fingers on.
09:06You see his paintings?
09:10Did I see what?
09:11His paintings.
09:12Judges just gonna love it.
09:13Probably.
09:14Totally think Sam is one of the weakest ones here.
09:16You've painted on your clothes.
09:18It's so fresh.
09:22Avant-garde is a real technical design to come up with.
09:27This fabric choice is either going to go over really well or really horribly.
09:31I believe this could break him because he doesn't have any technique.
09:34He doesn't know how to construct.
09:36And hopefully the judges will see it.
09:40Coming up on Project Runway All-Stars.
09:42You've designed a rainbow dress.
09:44I think it's like a cop-out because he can't do Avant-Garde.
09:46Everyone else that's in the room is actually working.
09:49And you just drape some .
09:51It's all stars.
09:52Bitter bitches.
09:57Did you do Avant-Garde in your season?
09:59No?
10:00I got kicked off like two episodes before.
10:02It's the Avant-Garde challenge.
10:03I'm very excited about this because I didn't get to make it to this challenge
10:07for my season of Project Runway.
10:09What was your dress?
10:10It was an umbrella dress.
10:11With like the upside down umbrella.
10:13Oh, it had like the folds.
10:15Yeah.
10:16Okay.
10:17Wait, did you win or Shawn?
10:18Both of us won.
10:19Both of them won, yeah.
10:20Okay.
10:21Well, Shawn didn't make an Avant-Garde dress.
10:22It just bled.
10:25But Avant-Garde is about like an idea.
10:27It was a cool idea.
10:28But the silhouette was like really basic.
10:30The silhouette was like...
10:31Boring.
10:32Avant-Garde is all about this like idea that like gives you like an emotional response.
10:39It's time to go work.
10:40Yeah.
10:41Avant-Garde!
10:42But then there's this like other idea of Avant-Garde where it's overdone and ridiculous.
10:48That's just really not who I am as a designer.
10:51Bitter, bitter bitches.
10:53Oh my God, my hand hurts.
10:58Emily's garment is her.
11:00She's putting a lot of detail into it.
11:03But I find it more couture than Avant-Garde.
11:06She's playing it safe.
11:08Tubes.
11:11All right, y'all.
11:12It's time to go.
11:13What?
11:14Yes, wrap it up.
11:15Oh .
11:16Time's going by fast as hell.
11:17Put your stuff down.
11:18Let's get out of here.
11:19Bye, Avant-Garde.
11:20Workroom.
11:21Let's get to work.
11:22Oh, beautiful.
11:23I actually did stuff.
11:24I personally feel like I have a huge laundry list of things to do.
11:39It's going to be a long day.
11:41Do you feel like it's any pressure on you since you've known for creating these runway pieces?
11:46Oh, yeah.
11:47I already do big things going down the runway for ready-to-wear.
11:51So I'm sure they're expecting a lot more.
11:54I was going to change my little cage thing.
11:57I'm glad that it's a two-day challenge because I had an opportunity to sleep on my look.
12:02And I'm cutting out my boning jacket, which I was using as a cage.
12:07So I'm creating this neck piece collar moment that's actually going to mask her face,
12:13which I'm pulling that inspiration out of my painting.
12:20Good morning, designers.
12:21Hi, Anna.
12:22Good morning.
12:23Good morning, Anna.
12:24You've got more time than ever before and more money than ever before.
12:27And you certainly need it for an avant-garde look.
12:30But it also means that I am expecting big things from every single one of you.
12:34Let's start with you, Emily.
12:36Tell me about your inspiration.
12:37Talking to the artist, she's like all about celebrating strong women.
12:41I loved the fringe.
12:42I loved the makeup.
12:43It made me think of like the way fabric is woven.
12:46So I thought it'd be cool to like cut my own cables.
12:48And then I'm going to cut strips out of the black world wall.
12:52And I'm going to stack them on top of each other.
12:54It's very literal.
12:55Like from the colors you've chosen.
12:57I mean, this is, it mirrors the painting and the dress.
13:02I don't want you to get so trapped in this that you don't think of doing something a little bit more outside the box with this.
13:08Because this has to be avant-garde.
13:10I had this mosaic artist, Carlos.
13:12And it's something that I really connected with him on because I'm from Philadelphia and mosaics is a really big part of our artsy.
13:18It's going to be really skin tight to the body.
13:20And then there's going to be a separate piece on top.
13:23How's it going to win?
13:24The organza combined with this print underneath.
13:26It's just going to look very cool on the runway.
13:29You have good taste.
13:30You have the craftsmanship.
13:32Just make sure you really bring it.
13:34She wants me to push myself, which I really agree with.
13:37I feel like this challenge, I really need to up the ante.
13:40I like how he painted a black silhouette.
13:43So I want to try and bring that to life.
13:45I'm looking at this thinking, is it avant-garde?
13:47I love Kini's design.
13:48I think it's beautiful.
13:49But there is not a single person on the face of the planet that would call it avant-garde.
13:54I want to do a black bodysuit to kind of cover her whole face.
13:58This feels not as modern as the other mask that you're talking about.
14:03Okay.
14:04That's my problem.
14:05They're very two different worlds.
14:06Okay.
14:07My inspiration touched me on a personal level because I'm that person that wears this shield sometimes.
14:11How does that manifest itself in what we have here?
14:13I wanted to create this massive moment that actually shielded her and protected her.
14:18And I did double shoulder pads so it shows that power.
14:22Don't make it too Blade Runner.
14:23I guess not.
14:24I wanted something that had like a kind of like cascading structure.
14:29Why the rainbow?
14:30I decided to capture this moment of like gay marriage becoming legalized in the United States.
14:35I think it's like a cop out.
14:37He's just using this whole gay marriage thing as a buffer because he can't do avant-garde.
14:42This is not about a moment in your life.
14:46This is about being inspired by the artist.
14:48I don't know what to say about Sam's because if my aspiration was an owl in a glass I wouldn't have painted rainbows.
14:55It's weird.
14:56I don't understand.
14:58You're talking about obviously gay rights.
15:00Mm-hmm.
15:01And you've designed a rainbow dress.
15:03That is a cliche.
15:05Okay.
15:06Xana is definitely not happy with this look.
15:09Which is ironic because this look was all about happiness so.
15:15Designers, I think all of you have taken very different approaches here.
15:18These judges know avant-garde.
15:20Give them something they have never seen before.
15:23Good luck guys.
15:24See you later.
15:25Bye.
15:32My initial inspiration was to capture a moment in time.
15:35So I am still using that.
15:37But I'm making it a lot more sophisticated.
15:39Giving it like a more understated shape so that the textile can really speak.
15:44I drape this really amoeba-like dress.
15:48I'm gonna start covering it with a purple chiffon almost like a shroud.
15:57Hey.
15:58Good to see you.
15:59Hi.
16:00This is the avant-garde challenge.
16:02Yes.
16:03This is gonna be so cool.
16:05It's literally pinned together.
16:08Yeah.
16:09I want the dress to be the artwork and then just like a black palette.
16:13I love the tears of the skirt.
16:14I love the ruffle.
16:15The bow is perfect size.
16:17But the one element that I don't have ready for her is the black bodysuit.
16:22That is the crucial part of the look.
16:24So freaking cool.
16:25I'm gonna have to pull it up, get you in, and then tack the rest.
16:29I'm really liking my look.
16:30I think it's cool and different.
16:32Santa didn't really like it.
16:33She said that it was not avant-garde.
16:35But if I'm gonna go out, I want it to be for something that I really love.
16:39And if I did like crazy shoulders that were out to here, I would not love it.
16:44I had this whole dress made up and I had to like tear it apart.
16:49I think that my dress looks really, really cool.
16:51I have the purple over the rainbow.
16:53Still happy, but it's more sophisticated.
16:57Word.
16:58It needs to be shorter.
17:01Overall, I'm pleased with everything.
17:03But my top needs to be made to perfection.
17:05And still have to create the bottom foundation of my garment.
17:09That's gonna be sick.
17:10Bye!
17:11I'll see you tomorrow.
17:17Keenan, that's the best you've looked in a long time.
17:20What?
17:21I said that's the best you've looked in a long time.
17:23Shut up.
17:24You bitch.
17:30You got weirded out because of your critique.
17:31I started thinking about it and it just felt like inappropriate for it to be bright and happy.
17:36Sam is really young and he has lots of ideas.
17:38I don't know if he can really execute his ideas very well,
17:41but I think there's something very cool about the way he looks at things.
17:45Do you like yourself?
17:46Mm-hmm.
17:47Yeah.
17:50I find it very disrespectful that everyone else that's in the room is actually constructing garments
17:55and he just drapes some and hand tacking it.
17:58I want to confront him so bad, but I don't want to be like a bully.
18:00I just want to ask him how do he feel being this far in the competition with what he's done.
18:07It's all stars.
18:09People actually have patterned pieces and actually working and you just drape crinoline and hand tacking it.
18:15Y'all it's time to go.
18:17Hello.
18:18Like how do you feel about that?
18:19Let's go now.
18:20Shoot me.
18:21Shoot me.
18:23Coming up on Project Runway All Stars.
18:26Is he finished?
18:27Yeah.
18:28That is bizarre.
18:30Ken's look is terrifying.
18:31You're a liar.
18:32You're a snake.
18:33I don't care what you believe.
18:34I have a lot of work to get done.
18:35Me too.
18:36Let's get to work.
18:37Morning of the Runway and I still have to do the bottom of my dress.
18:40I have to connect the neck and I have like all this crazy tacking to the back of the dress.
18:45I have to put a waistband on my skirt, put a lining in my skirt.
18:47I have to sew on all my snaps.
18:49I believe I'm still sewing.
18:50I have to sew on all my snaps.
18:51I believe I'm still sewing.
18:52What the hell man.
18:55Does anybody know what time the models are supposed to come in?
19:10Is he finished?
19:12Yeah.
19:14That is bizarre.
19:15Everyone in the workroom is actually putting in heart and soul and construction into their garments.
19:20And I've seen Sam challenge after challenge just drape fabric on the dress form and tack it together.
19:26And honestly, it's really just frustrating the hell out of me.
19:30Models!
19:33Hey.
19:35So, it's ready.
19:37If you have to take it off, you can take it off.
19:39Let's get your feet in so I can throw the zipper in.
19:42I feel pretty confident in my look.
19:45The important thing about avant-garde is that it's still fashion.
19:49And I feel like I'm checking both the boxes of it being very unusual and being fashionable.
19:57Oh, the fit is perfection.
19:58Yes.
19:59Body kind.
20:01Can you see?
20:02My look is 1,000% badass.
20:05I've taken my time to construct it amazingly.
20:07That collar face cover-up piece is absolutely brilliant.
20:13All right, Hildy, let's go to the Schwarzkopf hair studio.
20:15All right.
20:17I'm going to do like this mannequin effect.
20:19And then you're dressing the mannequin.
20:20Yeah.
20:20My inspiration is this painting.
20:22So here and then a block.
20:24So the garment she's wearing really looks like a painting, mosaic sculpture.
20:32So a little bit of lovey-do and dragon fruit.
20:35Lush will be really strong red.
20:37The definition will be that strong blue.
20:41Let's just go to the Chinese laundry shoe wall.
20:46They're your favorite.
20:50Cool.
20:51From the bobble bar jewelry wall, I grab a really beautiful electric blue enamel necklace.
20:58It's so pretty and it goes perfectly with my look.
21:00All right, guys, 30 more minutes.
21:06Looks cool, Emily.
21:07Emily has made a really cool oversized sweatshirt and it's super wearable, but it's not avant-garde.
21:16Can I see you?
21:18How do you feel about Sims?
21:19Yes.
21:21Let me be honest.
21:23Send down whatever you want to send down and you can go home on that.
21:27That's totally fine with me.
21:30Ken's look is terrifying.
21:32I would die of a heart attack if I saw his model in the dark alley.
21:37Or I might punch her.
21:39Five more minutes.
21:42Is it okay?
21:44Yeah.
21:44We're heading to the runway and I feel like I got this.
21:47The only other competition is Ken's because it's dramatic, too.
21:50We are not showing our girls' faces and it's going to be a fight on the runway.
21:55He needs using this weird bodysuit thing as a crutch.
22:00You take the bodysuit off and you've got like a pageant dress.
22:03It just seems like an afterthought.
22:05All right, guys.
22:05Let's head to the runway.
22:08Come on.
22:10I really hope the judges noticed that I really tried to push the boundaries of clothing.
22:16That's what I think avant-garde is.
22:20Coming up on Project Runway All-Stars.
22:23You've managed to really give us something powerful.
22:26I would have made it more of a statement.
22:28Bigger, bigger.
22:29Isaac, do you agree with George?
22:30No, I'm sorry.
22:32Avant got your clue.
22:36The winner of Project Runway All-Stars will receive the opportunity to design an exclusive
22:41line of jewelry for BobbleBar.com.
22:43The final say in fashion jewelry.
22:46A capsule footwear collection by Chinese Laundry.
22:49A fashion spread in Marie Claire in a position at the magazine as contributing editor.
22:54From Brothers Sewing and Embroidery, a complete sewing studio to launch their line.
22:59And to elevate their business and build their brand, a cash prize of $100,000.
23:09Ooh.
23:11Hi.
23:11Oh.
23:14Hello, designers.
23:15Hello.
23:15This week, we have introduced you to some of New York's cutting-edge artists to inspire
23:22avant-garde looks as wearable works of art.
23:25Let's meet tonight's judges.
23:28First, co-founder and designer of Marquesa, Georgina Chapman.
23:32Hi, designers.
23:35Next, one of the most iconic names in American fashion, designer Isaac Mizrahi.
23:41Hi, kids.
23:41And our guest judge this week is universally recognized as one of the music industry's
23:49most iconic artists.
23:51He's sold over 50 million albums.
23:55He's more than a fashion icon.
23:57For many, he defines pop culture.
24:01Please welcome to Project Runway All-Stars, Boy George.
24:05All right, Deb.
24:10Our judges are looking for dramatic, avant-garde looks that make an impactful statement.
24:16So let's hope you rock our world.
24:18Have a great show.
24:28I like it.
24:29I like it.
24:30The overall look is breathtaking.
24:33It's fantastic.
24:35She is serving it up on this runway.
24:38I am so happy.
24:40I think it looks so cool.
25:01I love the bright pops of color.
25:03I love the way that I did the cabling.
25:05As long as I love it, and I feel like I'm properly representing myself, then that's all that matters.
25:13I really love how the purple sort of gives little hints of the rainbow underneath.
25:32I've tried to do something different with the shape and structure of my dress.
25:37I'm hoping that the judges at least give me credit for that.
25:40I love it.
25:46I love that I was able to translate this idea of movement onto her overlay.
26:01I think it looks really cool with the edging.
26:03This is one of the looks that I'm extremely proud of.
26:06Oh, I love this.
26:20Oh, my God.
26:21She's so dramatic.
26:22It's edgy.
26:24The skirt with the layers shows a lot of technique.
26:27The bodysuit.
26:27I'm glad I went with it.
26:29It makes the look a bit more avant-garde.
26:31Designers, thank you for your work this week.
26:48One of you is the winner of this challenge, and one of you will be eliminated tonight.
26:52Emily, tell us about your wearable work of art.
27:03I was inspired by the artist Lexi Bella.
27:07She's all about female strength and empowerment.
27:10The coils that I created represent trying to break free from the ties that bind.
27:15I wanted to make her strong, but still have a softness to her and a streetwear edge.
27:21It's an attractive piece.
27:23I think you were onto an interesting idea there with the braiding, but I just wish that
27:27you had pushed it just that little bit further.
27:30I do think that there is something avant-garde about the dress, but I'm not mad about the
27:35embellishment.
27:36It just looks like you ripped up fabric and kind of cabled it and just threw it on the
27:40dress, whereas, like, the rest of the dress is so wonderful.
27:42Like, without the cabling, the dress is divine.
27:45You know, the model works really well.
27:46The hair's really good.
27:47Everything about it looks really good.
27:48I think it might have been better just all in black, you know.
27:51Maybe even more wasted, you know.
27:53Yeah, I wanted the shoulders to be super, super wide, and then it would have been more
27:57impactful, but I think the biggest problem with this dress is that it's almost too wearable
28:01to be avant-garde.
28:02Okay.
28:04Keeney, let's hear from you.
28:05So I had Bradley Theodore's artwork.
28:07He drew basically a black silhouette and then drew all his color detail from that.
28:12And it brought me to a place where I wanted to see my sketch come to life.
28:16I wanted to have her come down in a black bodysuit and face covered, basically like she's
28:21a mannequin wearing a piece of art.
28:22I like the idea that she's covered.
28:24It gives strength to this dress because I'm now imagining if you didn't have that back
28:29bodysuit, this dress would go to a very, very different place.
28:32It would belong on some 80s show like Dynasty or Dallas.
28:36The problem that I have with it is that it's so pretty.
28:40And when I think of avant-garde clothes, I don't think of pretty clothes.
28:44I'm a fan of the head thing if it was flawless.
28:47It's all bumpy and weird and sort of lumpy on her head.
28:50The mask, it's quite a bizarre effect, but I just don't think the two things work together.
28:55You know, I think the pink thing's beautiful and then it sort of goes off.
28:58I don't know what you're trying to do.
28:59To me, this is a great interpretation of this art that inspired you.
29:03And it is avant-garde.
29:04The hood made me so uncomfortable, which is good.
29:08And I think she's smiling under there.
29:10Yeah, she's smiling.
29:13Great job, Keeney.
29:16Dom, tell us about your avant-garde look.
29:18For my artist, I chose Carlos Pinto.
29:21He had a mosaic piece, which I thought was really cool because from across the room,
29:25it looked like just a painted picture of a whale.
29:28But when you get up really close, they actually cut up metro cards.
29:31That is kind of what I do as a designer.
29:33I take lots of different ideas and mosaic them together.
29:36I like this piece very much.
29:37The jacket has got an amazing movement to it.
29:40Does the jacket attach to the dress?
29:41It can come off.
29:43It's a very pretty dress, Tom.
29:45For the designer you are, I do think this is avant-garde for you.
29:48Is it sort of smacking us in the face?
29:50Not so much.
29:51Like, I could say I really like that dress, which is 100% true.
29:54But as an avant-garde dress, I think it's a bit of a letdown.
29:58Dress really reminds me of sort of Jean-Paul Gaultier, the way it's cut and everything.
30:01It's really beautifully done.
30:03But, you know, avant-garde art, it annoys you.
30:06It challenges you.
30:07You know, I'd have put more makeup on and made that kind of seafood thing even more of an event.
30:11Like an oxygen tank or something with a mask.
30:15Is the dress forward thinking?
30:17Probably not.
30:18But I think it's a beautiful piece of art.
30:20It's such a weird, long conversation to be had.
30:22So we're going like, yeah, it's not the most avant-garde thing, but congratulations.
30:26I mean, who knows what the hell we're talking about.
30:30Or avant got a clue.
30:32That's the other one.
30:35Hi, Sam.
30:36My artist was named Carl Hopgood.
30:38And the way that he does art is something called digital taxidermy, which is this idea of, like, freezing a moment in time.
30:45So it would, like, honor that little moment.
30:47And originally I decided gay marriage is legalized in the United States and, like, how joyous that was.
30:52But I wanted it to be more about the people who fought for this day and did not get to see it.
30:57So I had this, like, really joyous shape going on underneath it.
31:00But I wanted to, like, sort of shroud it a little bit.
31:03The way that you explained it was so beautiful.
31:05And if you'd have done that before I saw the dress, I would have seen it in a different way completely.
31:10I mean, I totally got the gay rainbow flag thing.
31:13I mean, it's beautifully constructed.
31:14But again, avant-garde, I would have made it more of a statement, you know, bigger, bigger, because it's got such great potential, you know.
31:21Isaac, do you agree with George?
31:23No, I'm sorry.
31:25I really like this dress.
31:26This was my favorite dress, actually.
31:28It's interesting, and I also like that it's faceted in this way.
31:32Like, that's not something I've seen that much.
31:34Could you turn?
31:36Yeah, there's something incredibly lovely about it.
31:39It's a smart basis for an avant-garde dress.
31:41Whether or not you actually achieved that, I'm not exactly sure.
31:45This feels so unresolved to me.
31:47I love the thought and I love the direction.
31:50I just don't think the end result was perhaps as provoking in the way that you wanted.
31:56Fair enough, yes.
31:57It almost looks like a kite that was caught in a tree.
31:59It looks exactly like a kite.
32:01Right?
32:01Which is what I love about it, yeah.
32:02But my initial reaction was that that just looks like a bunch of oddly draped fabric with some sort of structural piece underneath.
32:09So I don't know, I'm torn with this.
32:13Ken.
32:14The artist I chose is the same person that Emily had, Lexi Bella.
32:18The inspiration was this woman that was in this very dark place.
32:23Her eyes gently gazed up because she knew that there was hope to get out of her situation.
32:29So I wanted to create something that was very strong and bold.
32:33And at the profile, there's that possibility that she could still gaze up and find hope.
32:40Well, this is pure Grace Jones.
32:42I would be very surprised if she isn't on the phone tomorrow screaming for this outfit.
32:46Ken, I think this is great.
32:49It speaks to me on an emotional level.
32:51And I love seeing just a sliver of her underneath and all the mystery of what's going on underneath.
32:56Really, it's divine.
32:57You've managed to really hone in on your craft here and give us something powerful as an image.
33:03Can you give us a spin?
33:04That does bother me slightly right at the back, but I suppose she wouldn't be able to get into it otherwise.
33:11Well, I did it for comfort reasons, so she'll just be able to eat and things that...
33:16I think this outfit isn't about being comfortable.
33:18Right.
33:18Forget about comfort.
33:20Yes.
33:20You've got to suffer to wear an outfit like this.
33:24I mean, you cut so beautifully.
33:26This leather is done so well.
33:28This dress is so beautiful.
33:30But I want it a little bit longer.
33:32I don't want to see your toes.
33:35Well done, Ken.
33:37Thank you, designers.
33:38We are going to deliberate.
33:40Please take a seat in the backstage lounge, and we'll call you back soon.
33:43Congratulations, Ken.
33:52Yeah, you have a really good critique.
33:54I think overall, collectively, it was a great show, though.
33:56Yeah.
33:57I didn't know where I stand in top or bottom.
34:00I feel like there was more of a spectrum than a line between top and bottom.
34:05I have a question.
34:06How do you feel at this point in the competition as a designer?
34:10I mean, I feel good.
34:11I feel like there are a couple of times where I've gotten a little lost in my own head.
34:16But I want to know why you asked that.
34:19Like, what's...
34:20I've watched you just drape fabric and pin it.
34:22And hand tag.
34:24Like, I'm just going to...
34:27First, just really push yourself.
34:29Because you've created some good things, but I've also seen you just skip through that
34:33like it didn't mean anything to you.
34:37And to be honest with you, I want this real bad.
34:40And to get this far in a competition, it pisses me off because I had to fight for every damn
34:46thing that I know how to do.
34:47And you pin and do whatever, whatever, and you're skipping around the work room for two
34:50hours like you're done.
34:51And we're busting our asses.
34:54I really want this, too.
34:55I wouldn't have come here if I didn't really want this.
34:58I don't believe that.
34:59I don't care what you believe.
35:02You're a liar.
35:04You're a snake.
35:07You rest on this pretty s***.
35:10And I'm not talking about your garments.
35:11Honestly, I feel like the stuff that he's done is not up to par for a all-star.
35:21But I really love Sam.
35:23And I can tell that he's actually a really good person.
35:27Honestly, if that's your feeling about me, I don't think that there's anything that I
35:32can say or do to dissuade you from it.
35:34My thing is grab your balls and man up to your s***.
35:41Okay.
35:45The avant-garde challenge.
35:48Let's talk about Ken.
35:49I thought it was so great.
35:51It's something that made me think a little.
35:53I don't think I've seen that kind of effect before of a big windswept ruffle in a woman's
35:58face like that.
35:59I like that there was a freedom to this, where I feel like normally he is designing with
36:04such constraint because he seems kind of uptight.
36:07This is a great outfit for someone who's uptight.
36:09With uptight celebrity.
36:11They just can't be bothered to be photographed.
36:13I just wish that ruffle was a little more integrated at the top of the dress.
36:17Yeah.
36:18I wish the bottom had a little bit more drama.
36:20Maybe just like a train or something.
36:22Something.
36:22A little bit more balance.
36:24A little more dress for your avant-garde buck.
36:29Let's talk about Dom.
36:30It was a beautiful dress, a flattering dress.
36:34That cape really captured the art piece.
36:37I get that that was inspired by that work of art.
36:40I don't think it's very avant-garde.
36:42It wasn't outrageous or challenging.
36:45Can avant-garde just be her perception of it?
36:48No.
36:48Because if this is her avant-garde, then I like it.
36:51You're just being really kind.
36:53I did like it.
36:55I'm with you because not everyone's an avant-garde designer.
36:58They're just not.
36:58Perhaps, yes, this is avant-garde for her, but I just don't like it.
37:05Let's talk about Keeney.
37:07It makes for a powerful presentation, but there's always a slight taste issue for me.
37:12His colors, the way he picks fabrics.
37:14For sure.
37:14I thought this week was really, really strong for him.
37:17The way in which he interpreted this piece of art.
37:21But it was like pretty.
37:23He was like, uh-oh, I have a really pretty dress.
37:25Let me put a face bag on her.
37:27But you also made the point about the head thing being kind of a bit lumpy.
37:30And if you're going to do that, it's got to be startling and perfect.
37:39Sam's dress had a story behind it.
37:41It was a good idea that just wasn't executed to perfection.
37:45I think it could have gone further.
37:46It looked like a panic and a mistake.
37:48And I hated that color chiffon that he had thrown over the top.
37:52I liked it.
37:53Rigorous thinking.
37:55Light as a feather.
37:56It was my favorite dress of the day.
38:02Let's talk about Emily.
38:04I like the dress so much.
38:06But all black would have been so much more powerful.
38:08Yeah, really cool.
38:08Was it fear, do you think?
38:10I don't know.
38:10It looked tortured to me.
38:12I think she could have done something so incredible with the cabling.
38:15And more fun, for sure.
38:17More hair, dreadlocks, all over the floor.
38:20Whatever it may be.
38:21I just felt like, come on, be avant-garde.
38:23I think we know what we're going to do.
38:28And are we all in agreement?
38:30Yep.
38:31Okay, let's bring him back out.
38:38Designers, one of you is the winner of this week's challenge.
38:41And one of you will be eliminated tonight.
38:43Ken, Keeney, and Dom, you received the highest scores of the week.
38:56But which one of you is the winner?
38:59George, would you like to do the honors?
39:01The winning designer this week...
39:05is Ken.
39:08Yay!
39:11Congratulations, Ken.
39:12Thank you so much.
39:14And well done, Keeney and Dom.
39:16All three of you remain in the competition.
39:18You can leave the runway.
39:21Coming from the bottom twice, back-to-back,
39:25and actually winning a challenge was really, really good.
39:29Yay!
39:29I'm so excited about that.
39:32It just showed me what I need to do moving forward in this competition.
39:38And now to the least successful designs.
39:40Sam, we love the emotion,
39:44but without the backstory,
39:45you delivered a mediocre dress that fell flat.
39:49Emily, we love the originality,
39:53but you gave us a look that didn't push the envelope.
39:57Sam and Emily,
39:58you are both talented designers,
40:00but only one of you can stay.
40:02The designer eliminated tonight is...
40:09Emily.
40:14Sam, it was really close this week,
40:17but you are safe.
40:19You can leave the runway.
40:20Are you safe?
40:28Yes.
40:29Wow.
40:30Well, I think that's bull****.
40:32I don't really care, Kat.
40:33I wasn't talking to you.
40:34I did not say Sam.
40:37I'm done talking about it.
40:40Emily, thank you so much for joining us on All Stars.
40:44It sucks that I got eliminated in front of Boy George.
40:47We're going to miss you, Emily.
40:48Emily, you're wonderful.
40:51Good luck.
40:54I was happy with pretty much everything I did,
40:56and to get eliminated on a design that I really loved
40:59is totally cool with me.
41:01Hey, guys.
41:03Hi, Emily.
41:04I really felt like I connected with the designers
41:07and made a lot of friends.
41:09I felt like the judges' critiques
41:11were really constructive and respectful.
41:14Bye.
41:15Sorry, Emily.
41:16I had fun on my season of Project Runway,
41:20but All Stars was so much more fun.
41:26Next on Project Runway All Stars,
41:28you're all one step away from a shot
41:31at the Project Runway All Stars title.
41:33We have a guest you may recognize.
41:36Hello, designers.
41:37I'm kind of scared to see Nina.
41:40We're back.
41:42Hell no.
41:44It's all the winners from Project Runway All Stars.
41:47I can't handle a twist.
41:49You're like the only one.
41:51It's just so flattering on her.
41:53That feels really fresh.
41:55In all my years of Project Runway,
41:57I really haven't seen something pulled together like that.
41:59For the first time this season,
42:01the judges cannot make a decision.
42:03Oh, my God.
