18 August - national forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Welcome along to your afternoon or weather update from the Met Office.
00:03It's a fine summer's day for the vast majority, but as always, there are one or two exceptions.
00:09High pressure is dominating, sitting to the north, but there's low pressure just to the southwest.
00:14We are seeing a few showers coming up into the southwest, and around that high pressure,
00:18the breeze just feeding in from the North Sea, generating a bit of cloud on some of these North Sea coasts,
00:23and that may be fairly stubborn.
00:25Inland, it's breaking up a little bit and should reveal some spells of sunshine,
00:30but along the coastal strip of northern England and eastern Scotland, it may well stay a little glum.
00:36A few showers across the southwest of England, they're tending to drift away, but staying quite cloudy here,
00:40quite hazy conditions with some smoke from Portuguese wildfires that's been blown northwards,
00:47may enhance the sunsets this evening, and for many it's just a fine afternoon with plenty of sunny spells,
00:53and warm enough, temperatures pretty close to average, getting into the low 20s.
00:57It's quite warm in western Scotland, but noticeably cooler on some of these North Sea coasts,
01:02where it does stay fairly cloudy, temperatures may not get much above 16 or 17 degrees Celsius.
01:08As we go through this evening, this big lump of cloud out in the North Sea will start to drift further south
01:14and just move back inland, again across much of northeast England, central and eastern Scotland,
01:19and increasingly further south too, across parts of east Anglia.
01:22Still quite cloudy across southwest, southwest England in May again, see one or two showers coming in here,
01:28might even hear a rumble of thunder or see a flash of lightning,
01:31and it will be a pretty mild night, temperatures for most staying in the mid-teens, 14, 15 degrees,
01:38could just about dip down to single figures across rural parts of Scotland.
01:42We are seeing a bit of a northerly breeze, which will turn things cooler across the Northern Isles,
01:47in particular during Tuesday, bringing in more cloud, which may again be fairly stubborn across the central
01:53and the eastern parts of Scotland and northern and eastern parts of England during Tuesday.
01:59It might produce the odd little bit of drizzle, but generally staying dry.
02:02More likely to see some wet weather in the southwest, a scattering of showers.
02:06Again, the odd heavy one is possible, but they will be well scattered.
02:09Across Devon, Cornwall, maybe Pembrokeshire catching one too, perhaps even as far east as Dorset and Somerset.
02:15But the vast majority, I think, again, will stay dry, and we'll have some good spells of sunshine,
02:19particularly west coast of Wales and the south coast of England,
02:23where temperatures are likely to get up to 24, 25 degrees again.
02:26Again, quite a contrast.
02:28Where we keep that cloud and with a bit of a breeze coming in from the North Sea,
02:31it's going to feel fairly fresh when we compare the temperatures to the average for the time of year.
02:36You can see cooler than average where we keep that cloud and the breeze from the North Sea,
02:40but warmer further west where we see some sunny spells.
02:44Still the potential for one or two heavy showers,
02:46maybe even the odd rumble of thunder in the far southwest of England during Tuesday evening,
02:50and that cloud starting to come back inland.
02:52That will be a feature of the weather for the next couple of days.
02:55The high pressure remains in control, but remains sitting to the north, at least for the time being.
03:01Later in the week, it does tend to drift a little further south,
03:04which means we may lose more of that easterly breeze coming in.
03:08So high pressure, bringing a lot of fine weather through the rest of this week.
