17 December - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Hello, more rain to come over the next couple of days.
00:03There are signs of a change on the horizon, but certainly not for the rest of this week.
00:08Further spells of heavy rain to come and, well, here's the main culprit.
00:12This big swirl looks beautiful on the satellite image, doesn't it?
00:16A deep air of low pressure well out to the northwest of the UK.
00:19We're under here, but we're under the influence of these weather fronts
00:22and that line of cloud down to the southwest that is going to develop
00:26and bring us more rain as we go into tomorrow.
00:29But let's get back to the rest of Wednesday.
00:31These weather fronts moving through, bringing particularly heavy rain
00:34to parts of Wales and southwest England this afternoon,
00:37where we have a Met Office yellow warning in place.
00:39It has been so very wet here that any extra rainfall is likely to cause further disruption.
00:45There'll be a lot of surface water, a lot of spray on the roads.
00:47That rain getting into the east of Northern Ireland for a time,
00:50spreading into central and southern Scotland,
00:52but any rain over eastern England should be fairly patchy.
00:55In much of northern Scotland, we'll see some sunny spells,
00:58bar a few showers zipping into the far northwest.
01:01Now, they will be zipping in on a fairly brisk wind,
01:04the wind strengthening further, especially around these western coasts through the day,
01:08but bringing relatively mild air.
01:10Temperatures, again, a touch above average for the time of year,
01:13but obviously not feeling very pleasant with the wind and the rain.
01:17Now, the rain will extend away from the southwest corner as we go through the night,
01:22but still through the evening, heavy bursts of rain likely to cause further disruption.
01:26But there it does clear away, extending into East Anglia and the southeast,
01:30so turning into quite a wet night here.
01:32But even here by morning, most of it's out of the way.
01:34Showers will continue in the northwest,
01:36but many places will become dry as we go into Thursday morning.
01:41And temperatures will dip away with some clearer skies down into single figures,
01:44but again, by no means what you'd call a cold night.
01:48In fact, temperatures, for most places, significantly above average for a night in December.
01:53It does start largely dry, but largely grey on Thursday.
01:56Some sunshine for central and the eastern Scotland probably,
01:59but then the next area of rain that we saw down to the southwest comes charging in.
02:04And again, falling onto very soggy ground, heavy rain.
02:07There's bright colours there for Wales and southwest England,
02:10but also other southern counties of England could cause some problems.
02:14So again, Met Office yellow warnings are in place.
02:17Potential for further flooding, certainly disruption to the transport network.
02:21That rain there doesn't stop in the south.
02:22It extends across most of England, Wales, and further pulse of rain coming into Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:27It looks like a pretty soggy day.
02:29And the winds, if anything, getting stronger through Thursday.
02:32Bit of uncertainty about exactly where we see the strongest winds.
02:34But in the southwest, it could get very, very blustery for a time during the course of tomorrow.
02:39So that's another thing we need to keep an eye on.
02:41Temperatures, again, above average, but again, not feeling very pleasant with the wind and the rain,
02:47which continues to swirl around during Thursday evening.
02:50So still, again, a lot of spray, a lot of surface water on the roads for Thursday evening's rush hour.
02:56It does tend to start to pull away and things should get a little drier.
03:00There's that low pressure bringing that zipping away.
03:02There are low pressure systems in and around, but actually weather fronts tend to stick away from Friday.
03:08So Friday, probably a bright and breezy day for many.
03:11And then the next weather system comes in.
03:13But notice it is kind of grinding to a halt, likely to bring more rain in areas that don't need it,
03:18particularly in the west as we go through the weekend.
03:20But the weather patterns are starting to shift as we head into Christmas week.
03:26Now, for more on that, you'll be watching Alex Burkle's 10-Day Trend.
03:30That will be available on our YouTube channel on Wednesday afternoon.
