00:00Welcome along to your Met Office afternoon update. Plenty going on again with the weather today.
00:05A number of Met Office yellow warnings are in place for rain, snow and ice.
00:10The view from space shows a big swirl of cloud, an area of low pressure sitting to the northwest of
00:16Northern Ireland
00:17and then a smaller feature down to the southwest.
00:19This one is really driving things along as we go through today.
00:23Increasing the cloud, increasing the moisture, increasing the rain initially across the south.
00:28But then as that hits the colder air, it will generate some snow.
00:31Yellow warnings are in place for the rain across southern England and a mix of rain and snow for Northern
00:36Ireland.
00:36Most of the snow really only over the tops of the hills here.
00:39Some of that creeping into southwest Scotland.
00:41A few showers in northeast Scotland, but a good part of Scotland actually dry even some sunny spells across the
00:46far north.
00:47A fairly brisk and cold wind picking up along these north sea coasts, but much of eastern England will stay
00:53dry today.
00:54But in the south, that wet weather, say, some heavier bursts and, of course, because it's been so wet, likely
00:59to cause a few issues.
01:00And the wind's also strengthening here somewhat.
01:03So even though temperatures may get close to double digits in the far southwest, it won't feel very mild.
01:09And most places struggling at just five or six Celsius.
01:12Add on that wind on some of those eastern coasts.
01:15And it feels a lot colder than that.
01:16And then as we go into the late afternoon through the evening, the wet weather pushing northwards, hitting the colder
01:22air over particularly Wales,
01:23but also parts of the Midlands, especially Shropshire, Herefordshire, could generate some snowfall for a time.
01:29Most of it's going to be over the hills, but we could see some even coming down to lower levels.
01:33And then it bumps into the South Pennines.
01:36So there could be some heavier snow here too.
01:38As I say, most of it's going to be over the hills, two to five centimetres, above about 150 to
01:43200 metres.
01:44We could see more than that, though, over some of the higher hills.
01:47And there's a chance that even at lower levels for a time through the night, we could see a little
01:51bit, a centimetre or two.
01:53But by no means everywhere in this yellow snow warning area is going to get a covering.
01:59It doesn't work like that.
01:59That's just the area at risk.
02:01So most of it's going to be over the hills.
02:03And then as it clears, it could turn icy.
02:04We've got through the day today the yellow rain and snow warning in place for Northern Ireland.
02:09And the yellow rain warning across the South remains in place through the night because further heavy pulses of rain
02:14are likely here.
02:16Still some of that mixed rain, sleet and snow coming in through the early hours across parts of Northern England,
02:22particularly I say the Southern Pennines, parts of the Midlands, especially Shropshire, Herefordshire,
02:27and a good chunk of Central and Eastern Wales say most of the snow building up over the hills.
02:32But there could be a little bit at lower levels and then things could turn icy as those temperatures in
02:36this zone drop down.
02:37Towns and cities may just stop above freezing.
02:40But elsewhere, we could just see some pockets dipping below.
02:43Most towns and cities actually holding up a couple of degrees above freezing.
02:47Into Thursday.
02:49And so, well, for most of the day, much of the country here will be dry.
02:52But we're still going to start pretty wet over Northern England.
02:54A bit more snow to come perhaps over the Pennines for a time.
02:57But that should fizzle out.
02:59The wet weather generally easing over Eastern England.
03:01We'll see some showery rain in northwest Scotland and it will turn wetter again across Northern Ireland through the afternoon.
03:07But by then, most of Wales, southwest England looking dry and bright.
03:11Could even be a little bit of sunshine.
03:13But again, those eastern coasts staying quite cloudy.
03:15Perhaps not as windy tomorrow.
03:17So even though temperatures are still going to struggle at four or five degrees for most of us,
03:21it might not feel quite so cold.
03:23And again, in the southwest, we might reach double digits.
03:26And that is a sign of things to come because it is going to slowly but surely turn a bit
03:31milder as we head into the weekend.
03:34For more on that, you'll want to be watching the 10-day trend.
03:38And he's going to be making that for us through Wednesday afternoon.
