The Chief meets Smart at a public library to recover a special book. The book is a master list of CONTROL agents but its hiding place has now been compromised. Max and Larrabee transport the book in an armored car to a bank vault, but Max accidentally locks the vault door on both the Chief and Larrabee. As the vault only has a limited amount of air, Max and 99 decide to get an imprisoned safecracker (named "Baffles", a spoof of Raffles) but come back with a convicted master forger instead. Will the Chief and Larrabee be freed in time?

00:00Shhh!
00:16Shhh!
00:30I don't want anybody to see us talking to each other, Max.
00:48Meet me at the card file and pretend to be looking for a specific book.
00:51While you're looking through the cards, we'll talk.
00:54That way, nobody will know we're together.
01:00Did you say something, Chief?
01:06Anybody to see us talking to each other. Open the file drawer.
01:15Max, we've got to hurry. There's a book in this library that belongs to Control.
01:19Portnoy's complaint?
01:20No, it's much more important than that.
01:22Not to Portnoy, it is.
01:24Max, this book contains the names and addresses of every Control agent throughout the free world,
01:29with the exception of Pittsburgh.
01:30Now, Chief, who in the world would be stupid enough to put an important book like that in a public library?
01:35I put it here, Max.
01:37The most obvious place for a book is in a library.
01:39And sometimes the most obvious place is the safest.
01:42You know, you may have something there, Chief.
01:44Agent Dunlap had the same theory.
01:46He once came into possession of a very important piece of microfilm.
01:49You know where he hid it?
01:50Where?
01:51Right on top of his desk in his living room.
01:53Right out there in the open, where everybody could see it.
01:55And the microfilm was safe?
01:56Yes.
01:57Well, it would have been if they hadn't stolen the desk.
01:59Now, somehow Chaos found out about this book.
02:01Now, we've got to get it out of the library before they get their hands on it.
02:04Right, Chief.
02:05Because if Chaos gets possession of this book, it'll be the end of Control.
02:09Well, who put the book together, Chief?
02:10I did.
02:11It represents 30 years' work.
02:12Well, don't expect to make any money out of it until it comes out in paperback.
02:16What does it look like, Chief?
02:17It's red, white, and blue, and it's called Who's Who at Control.
02:21Well, we'd better start looking for it.
02:23Wait a minute, Max.
02:24What is it?
02:25That man who just came in the door, I think he's a Chaos agent.
02:36Just a minute, fella.
02:37Sorry, but this aisle is taken.
02:42No, no, no, no.
03:12It's not a frog.
03:13Mmm!
03:14Let's go!
03:19No.
03:20It's bad.
03:21We're not lying here.
03:23No, no.
03:24It's not the right thing.
03:26No, no, no, no.
03:28We're not lying here.
03:29Mm!
03:30Mm!
03:31Mm!
03:33Mm!
03:34Mm!
03:35Mm!
03:36Mm!
03:37Mm!
03:38Mm!
03:39Mm!
03:40Mm!
03:41Good work, Max.
04:08Did you get the book, Chief?
04:09Yes, right here.
04:09Oh, well, at least that's safe.
04:11Yes, but for how long?
04:12That was Chaos's first attempt to get that book,
04:14and they failed.
04:14From now on, they'll stop at nothing.
04:16They've got to get their hands on that book,
04:18and they'll kill the person who's carrying it.
04:39Oh, well, we're going to play the person.
04:45Go crazy.
04:46Go crazy.
04:47Go crazy.
04:48Go crazy.
04:49Go crazy.
04:50Go crazy.
04:51Go crazy.
04:52Go crazy.
04:52Go crazy.
04:53¶¶
05:23¶¶
05:50Yeah, good morning, Chief.
05:51I'm sorry I'm late, but I had an automobile accident right in front of the building.
05:55That idiot smashed in the whole front of my car.
05:57Well, don't worry about it, Chief. You're not the only one who's late.
06:00Larrabee isn't here either.
06:01Who do you think smashed in the front end of my car?
06:04Max told me all about the who's who at control book that Chaos is trying to get hold of.
06:08And I have a plan.
06:09A sensational plan, Chief.
06:11It's really foolproof.
06:12Absolutely foolproof.
06:13I really think it's gonna work, Chief.
06:14Can't miss.
06:15But what is it?
06:16Well, supposing you have a control agent memorize the contents of the book and then you destroy it.
06:21It won't work.
06:22Told ya.
06:24Once we've destroyed this book, if anything happens to the agent who memorized it, we'd be lost.
06:28Oh, wait a minute, Chief.
06:29I have an idea.
06:30Why don't we have two agents memorize the book, then if anything happens to one of them, the
06:35other one will have the information.
06:37What if something happens to both of them?
06:39Huh?
06:40What if something happens to both of them?
06:42Yes.
06:43Well, why don't we have three agents memorized and then if something happens to two of them, the
06:48other one will have the information.
06:49Forget it, Max.
06:50Well?
06:51Well, what?
06:52How do you like my plan?
06:53What plan?
06:54The plan where four agents memorize the book and then something happens to three of them,
07:01one of them has the information.
07:03Max, I hate that plan.
07:05Which part of it do you hate?
07:06All of it.
07:07All of it?
07:08Told ya.
07:09Now, we've got to find a safe place for this book.
07:13I suppose you've already considered a safe deposit box, Chief.
07:16Yes, 99.
07:17I thought about that over a month ago, but they turned me down.
07:19The bank turned you down?
07:20No, petty cash did.
07:22Well, at least we'll know for the time being the book is secure in my wall safe.
07:29Now, the combination of this safe is known to only two persons, myself and the vice president.
07:35Morning, Max.
07:36Hi, 99.
07:37Hi.
07:38I'm really sorry about the accident, Chief.
07:39I don't want to hear any more about it, Larrabee.
07:41Well, I just want to let you know that everything is taken care of.
07:43They just towed away what was left of your car and fixed a windshield wiper of mine.
07:47You can go now.
07:48I just want to put my lunch away.
07:50Have a nice day, Max.
07:57Thank you, Mr. Vice President.
08:00That was 4th and Taylor we just passed, wasn't it, Larrabee?
08:07I think so, but I'm not sure.
08:08Chief, smart here.
08:09We just passed 4th and Taylor.
08:14Right, Max, I got you pinpointed.
08:154th and Taylor.
08:16Wait a second, Chief.
08:17Better make that 5th and Taylor.
08:185th and Taylor?
08:19I thought you said 4th and Taylor.
08:20I did, Chief.
08:21But as I said 4th and Taylor, we passed 5th and Taylor.
08:23I'll tell you what, Max, I'll pinpoint you at 8th and Taylor.
08:24That way we'll both be there at the same time.
08:25You may be there, Chief, but we won't.
08:26We're now on Carver.
08:27Is that Carver Boulevard or Carver Avenue?
08:29Carver High School.
08:30We made a wrong turn.
08:31I thought it was a street, but it was a clay ground.
08:32Don't worry, Chief.
08:33We just passed 4th and Taylor.
08:34Right, Max, I got you pinpointed.
08:354th and Taylor.
08:36Wait a second, Chief.
08:37Better make that 5th and Taylor.
08:385th and Taylor?
08:39I thought you said 4th and Taylor.
08:40I did, Chief.
08:41But as I said 4th and Taylor, we passed 5th and Taylor.
08:44I'll tell you what, Max, I'll pinpoint you at 8th and Taylor.
08:46That way we'll both be there at the same time.
08:48You may be there, Chief, but we won't.
08:50We're now on Carver.
08:51Is that Carver Boulevard or Carver Avenue?
08:53Carver High School.
08:54We made a wrong turn.
08:55I thought it was a street, but it was a clay ground.
08:58Don't worry, Chief.
09:07We made it, Chief.
09:08I'm now checking out the street.
09:12Chief, there's a policeman on the corner, but I don't think he's a real policeman.
09:16What makes you think that?
09:17He's wearing sneakers.
09:19Max, that's Control Agent Foster.
09:21He's a very good man.
09:22He may be a very good man, Chief, but he's a lousy dresser.
09:28There's also a guy selling ice cream who's keeping his eye on us.
09:31Well, that's Harrington.
09:32He's with us, too.
09:35And there's a lady with a little boy waiting at the bus stop.
09:38Is she with Control, too?
09:39No, Max, she isn't, but the little boy is.
09:41Well, everything else appears to be in order, Chief.
09:44All right, fine.
09:46You were right, Max.
09:47About what?
09:48That was 4th and Taylor.
09:50There you are, Mr. Clark, your safe deposit box and the key.
09:56Thank you, Miss Becker.
09:57You can use one of the booths for privacy and then put the box in the vault whenever you like.
10:02I'm waiting for one of my assistants to show up with some important documents.
10:05Well, while you're waiting, why don't you have some tea and cake?
10:08Oh, that would be lovely.
10:10You do have a checking account with us, don't you, Mr. Clark?
10:13No.
10:15No, I don't either.
10:16A savings account?
10:19Christmas club?
10:23Then why don't you wait right here?
10:25Oh, Chief, don't be so nervous.
10:30Max will be along in a minute.
10:31He'd better be.
10:32After all these precautions, if anything happens to that address book,
10:3599, maybe I should have gone along with Max's plan.
10:38Oh, which plan was that, Chief?
10:39The one where the 13 control agents memorized the book,
10:42and if anything happened to 12 of them...
10:43Oh, yeah, the one where you threw the book at.
10:45Here they come now.
11:03Well, Chief, everything went off perfectly without a hitch.
11:06We left control, got into the armored truck,
11:08went through a car wash three times in case anyone was following us.
11:12The truck was dirty anyway, Chief.
11:13And here we are, with a clean truck.
11:15Okay, okay, let me see it.
11:16It's parked out in front.
11:17The truck, the book, open the chest.
11:20Oh, well, the book isn't in the chest, Chief.
11:22You see, we just used the chest as a decoy.
11:25Oh, that's very clever, Max.
11:27Oh, well, thank you, 99.
11:28You see, in case we walked into a chaos trap,
11:31I wanted to be sure that chaos was left with an empty chest
11:34because Larrabee was holding the book.
11:37That's not bad. Larrabee, where is it?
11:39I put it in the chest.
11:41Okay, Max, open it up.
11:42Where the key is, Larrabee?
11:44The key is in the book.
11:45But the book is in the chest.
11:46The key is in the book.
11:47Hey, Larrabee, there is a padlock on the chest.
11:50Without a key, how are we supposed to unlock it?
11:51I could do it, Chief, but we're in a bag.
11:53It could be a little noisy.
11:54How noisy?
11:55That noise.
11:57You can't shoot off a gun in a bank.
12:00Are you out of your mind?
12:01May I see you people out here, please?
12:03Good work, officers.
12:09He didn't do anything.
12:11We were being held up.
12:13When you fired your gun, he dropped his and put his hands up.
12:16I'm, uh, C. Barton Neff, uh, president of the bank.
12:21Oh, Harold Clark, Potomac greeting card company.
12:23This is my secretary.
12:24How do you do?
12:25And these two gentlemen are my, uh...
12:26Bodyguards.
12:27Yes, bodyguards.
12:28Why should the head of a greeting card company need bodyguards?
12:31Because none of us employees like him.
12:34Give me a hand in here.
12:35Right, Chief.
12:37Was, uh, Mr. Clark in the Navy?
12:40Uh, no, he was not.
12:41I noticed the other guard called him Chief,
12:43so I assumed he was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy.
12:46Oh, that Navy.
12:48Yes, yes, yes.
12:50He was in that Navy.
12:57You've locked the vault.
12:58There's an automatic time lock on that door.
13:01But this is Friday.
13:02Are you saying this vault can't be open until Monday?
13:04No.
13:05Oh, thank heavens.
13:07Tuesday.
13:08Monday's a holiday.
13:09We're closed.
13:10And they're locked in there until Tuesday?
13:12Max!
13:13Now, take it easy, 99.
13:15It's not that terrible.
13:16After all, they've got a book to read.
13:18They're gonna have a lot of time on their hands.
13:20The problem is there's just enough air in that vault
13:23to last 24 hours.
13:25Oh.
13:28Well, in that case,
13:29they're not gonna have as much time as I thought.
13:31He's not making much headway at all.
13:33No.
13:34He certainly isn't.
13:35Come on.
13:52He's not making much headway at all.
13:54No.
13:55He certainly isn't.
13:56Come on.
13:57Come on.
14:02What are you gonna do, Max?
14:04I'm gonna use my shoe phone to contact the chief on his watch phone.
14:07Good thinking.
14:16Line's busy.
14:17Wouldn't you know it, Max's line is busy.
14:19Well, maybe you dial it wrong, Chief.
14:21Try again.
14:24All right.
14:25I'll try again.
14:27Still busy.
14:29I'll dial the control operator and have her break in on whoever Max is talking to.
14:33Yeah, that's what I would do.
14:35Chief's line is still busy, 99.
14:38Max, why don't you call the control operator and have her cut in on whoever the chief is talking to?
14:42That's exactly what I was going to do, 99.
14:49Operator's line is busy, too.
14:51Call the chief again.
14:53I can't get anyone.
14:56Hello?
14:57Hello.
14:58This is Maxwell Smart.
14:59Let me speak to the chief.
15:00This is the chief.
15:01Oh, hi, Chief.
15:02Glad I could get a hold of you.
15:03How are things going?
15:04What do you mean, how are things going?
15:06You're on the outside.
15:07What's happening out there?
15:08Well, Chief, we've got a guy working on the door with an acetylene torch.
15:11What, is he making any progress?
15:13Uh, yes, in a way.
15:14What do you mean, in a way?
15:16Well, Chief, he's only been working on the door for a half hour.
15:19We figure in another five minutes, he should have the paint off the door.
15:22Let me talk to him, Max.
15:23Chief, I want you to know that everything possible is being done to get you out of there.
15:28We've sent for the rescue squad.
15:30And, Chief, Mr. Neff says that we should have you out in time.
15:33What do you mean, in time?
15:34Oh, nobody told you about the air, huh?
15:37What air?
15:38Eh, well, that's it, Chief.
15:39In another 24 hours, you won't be able to say what air.
15:42Do you think you mean there's only enough air in this vault to last 24 hours?
15:45Eh, yes.
15:46Well, Chief, there's nothing to get excited about because tonight is the night they push back the clocks and you pick up an extra hour of air.
15:52No, Max, they push them forward.
15:54More or less.
15:55What do you mean, more or less?
15:57Less.
15:58Chief, is there anything that I can do?
16:01Yes, keep your husband off the phone.
16:04Now, 99, if what Max says is true, we don't have much time.
16:07Now, here's what I want you to do.
16:08An air in.
16:09An air out.
16:11Herbie, will you stop that?
16:12We only have a certain amount of air in here and you're using it all up.
16:15You use your half the way you want and I'll use mine the way I want.
16:2199, there's only one man who can get us out of here in time.
16:25Who's that, Chief?
16:26Baffles, the greatest safe cracker in the world.
16:29But isn't he in prison?
16:30Yes, he is.
16:31And it's up to you and Max to get him out.
16:56Baffles, you just missed him.
17:14Will he be back soon?
17:17I hope not.
17:19Max, we're too late.
17:21What are we gonna do now?
17:22You folks got a problem?
17:24Yes, we're looking for a safe cracker.
17:26A safe cracker?
17:27Well, you come to the right place.
17:29Not necessarily the right cell block, but the right place.
17:32Are you a safe cracker?
17:33No.
17:34I'm a forger.
17:35Oh.
17:36Well, you see, we have a friend of ours who's locked in a bank vault and we have to get him out.
17:40Could you recommend a safe cracker?
17:42What does it pay?
17:43Maybe I'll do it.
17:44But you're not a safe cracker, you're a forger.
17:46So, what do I care?
17:47If there's a buck in it, I'll do anything.
17:49What are you paying?
17:50Well, if you can get him out of the vault, we have the authority to give you your freedom.
17:53Okay, my freedom and a buck.
17:58All right, let's go.
18:00Oh, not so fast.
18:01Let me see the buck.
18:02What's the matter with you?
18:03We're offering you your freedom.
18:05We're saying that you can walk right out of this prison.
18:08You can go outside and be a free man.
18:11What's it like on the outside these days?
18:14Eh, we'll give you two bucks.
18:18All right.
18:20What bank is it?
18:21The Bank of the Potomac.
18:23Why didn't you say so in the first place?
18:25That's one bank I've been dying to hit.
18:28Why?
18:29That's the bank where my ex-wife deposits her alimony checks.
18:33Thereby, you're wasting your time.
18:47That door is a foot thick and it's constructed of iron and laminated steel.
18:50You'll never open it with a quarter.
18:52How about two dimes and a nickel?
18:57Hello?
18:58Chief, we just got back from the prison.
19:00Not a moment too soon.
19:01We're running out of air in here.
19:02Did you get baffles?
19:03No, we didn't get baffles, but we got his cellmate, Freddy the Forger.
19:07Freddy the Forger?
19:08A Forger can't open a safe.
19:10Well, he says he can, Chief.
19:11Max, he's a Forger.
19:12He doesn't know the first thing about opening a vault.
19:15Well, what's the difference, Chief?
19:17It's worth a try.
19:18If he fails, all we stand to lose is a couple of bucks.
19:35What happened?
19:36And where is he going?
19:37Kelly finally burned a hole through to inside the vault.
19:41Then somebody there plugged it up with a quarter.
19:44That's ridiculous.
19:45That hole's too small anyway.
19:47You never could have gotten them out through there.
19:49We didn't intend to get them out through the hole.
19:52We just wanted to get enough air in so they could last until Tuesday morning,
19:57when the vault opens automatically.
19:58Well, you have nothing to worry about,
20:00because Freddy the Forger here is going to open the vault right now.
20:03Give me the deuce.
20:09Uh, did you say his name was, uh, Freddy the Forger?
20:12That's right.
20:13I believe your wife has an account with us.
20:15That's right.
20:16There's no mistaking her account.
20:18She makes deposits from some of the most famous and wealthiest people in the world.
20:23Thanks.
20:24She made a deposit this morning.
20:27Do you know who it was from?
20:29Charles de Gaulle.
20:31She must know him very well.
20:33It was signed, Chuck.
20:36Just wait till next week.
20:38She's getting one from Howie Hughes.
20:41Get on with it. Get on with it.
20:43I'll need a fountain pen.
20:46Oh, here. Use mine.
20:48What are you going to do? Sign them out?
20:51For me, the pen has always been mightier than the source.
20:57What are you doing?
20:59I am depressing the ink into the timing mechanism.
21:06The ink will act as a lubricant causing the gears to spin ahead at an accelerated rate.
21:12In a few moments, the timing mechanism should advance to the point equivalent to Tuesday morning.
21:19Well, that's terrific, Freddy.
21:21He's worth two bucks.
21:35Chief, are you all right?
21:36I'm all right, Ninon. Just let me get my breath. I'll be fine.
21:39Chief, I want you to meet Freddy the forger. He's the guy who opened the safe.
21:42Thanks for saving our lives.
21:43Thanks for the two bucks.
21:45Mara, beget the book.
21:46May I have my pen, please?
21:48It was an anniversary gift from my wife.
21:50Well, now that you have your freedom, I hope you're not going to get in trouble.
21:53Don't worry. I forged my last check.
21:56What are you going to do?
21:57I think I'll take up safe cracking. It's a lot easier.
22:00Ninety-nine, will you take Freddy down to headquarters and get him a change of clothes?
22:03Sure, Chief. Come on, Freddy.
22:07Oh, Max, where's the book?
22:08Huh?
22:09The book.
22:10The book?
22:11Chief, I sent Larrabee in to get the book and they locked the safe on him.
22:15Come on, Max, let's go.
22:16Chief, what are you talking about?
22:17Larrabee is locked in and nobody knows about it except you and me.
22:20Shh.
22:21Come on.

22:23Come on.
