Max drops a courier package from a plane and it lands on the roof of a mansion. In an effort to retrieve the package, caught in the pouring rain, Max and 99 seek a temporary refuge from the elements and have to deal with the kooky inhabitants. The sadistic châtelaine, Mrs. Van Hooten (Gale Sondergaard), thinks 99 is her long-lost sister Rebecca, for whom 99 is indeed a doppelgänger. As a curiosity in the episode, Max is asked why he calls his wife "99", to which he responds that he does not know what her real name is.

00:00Yes, sir.
00:23Oh, stewardess, how come I'm the only passenger on this plane?
00:27Oh, I hadn't noticed.
00:30You hadn't noticed?
00:32Well, I was so busy making your dinner.
00:35I don't understand how this airline can stay in business when they only carry one passenger.
00:39We don't show movies.
00:41Now, if you'll excuse me, sir, I...
00:42Just a minute. One more question.
00:43Oh, could you make it quick? I don't want to burn your egg, Benedict.
00:46Yes. Well, we've been flying for five hours.
00:49How come it's taking so long?
00:51I mean, the trip from Chicago to Washington is only supposed to take two hours.
00:55We're flying in a holding pattern, sir.
00:57Over Washington?
00:58Over Chicago.
00:59No?
01:08No.
01:11No.
01:12Hello?
01:35Hello?
01:40Larrabee, I think Max is calling on the balloon phone.
01:42Will you bring one in here right away?
01:44Right, Chief.
01:56There you are, Chief.
02:03Larrabee, never mind.
02:04I took the call into my regular phone.
02:10He's on, Chief. Go ahead.
02:11Thank you, Larrabee.
02:13Is everything all right, Max?
02:15Chief, I'm a little worried.
02:16There's something strange going on here.
02:18I'm the only passenger on this flight.
02:20I don't like the sound of that.
02:21I'm not too crazy about it myself, Chief.
02:23Well, fortunately, the package is safe.
02:25Right, Chief. It's in my suitcase.
02:27No, Max, that package is a decoy.
02:29The real package is hidden in the luggage compartment under the plane.
02:32Now, remember, Max, no matter what happens, chaos must not get their hands on it.
02:36Is it that important, Chief?
02:37Max, for some time now, we've known that an enemy spy satellite has been taking pictures of our spy satellite.
02:43Now, that package contains film that our spy satellite took of their spy satellite taking pictures of our spy satellite.
02:49Well, what am I supposed to do with this package when the plane lands in Washington?
02:52Rush it to headquarters.
02:53We've got to get that film into the control lab so they can be developed immediately.
02:57Chief, I've got a better idea.
02:59I'll drop it off at the corner drugstore next to my house.
03:02Why is that a better idea?
03:03You'll get a free roll of film.
03:09Captain, Maxwell Smart is starting to ask questions.
03:12Yeah, but if I get rid of him now, what about the package?
03:17You're right.
03:19It must be in his luggage.
03:21I'll take care of him immediately.
03:24Remember, Max, if there's any danger, pull the red handle under the window.
03:29That will jettison the package out of the baggage compartment and it will parachute safely to Earth.
03:33All right, Mr. Smart.
03:35You have a choice.
03:36Either you hand over the package or...
03:40I get the egg Benedict.
03:42Or you die.
03:43Well, that's not much of a choice.
03:44Either way, I lose.
03:46Put your hands up.
03:51Max, are you all right?
03:52I'm fine, Chief.
03:53Max, I don't want you to take any more chances.
03:55You pull that red handle right now.
03:57I pulled that red handle hours ago, Chief.
03:59Why did you do that?
04:00Well, I thought it was the emergency door.
04:02Well, why would you want to open the emergency door while the plane's in flight?
04:06Because it was an emergency, Chief.
04:08The door to the men's room was locked.
04:32Well, you see, you see?
04:33But it was an emergency door.
04:34It's a place that was locked.
04:38It's an emergency door that recognized it was locked.
04:40We say the door to your wife.
04:42Cause it's cold, it's cold.
04:43It's cold.
04:44How would you do that?
04:45He said the door?
04:46He said the door was locked.
04:48I love you.
04:49¶¶
05:19¶¶
05:23It's starting to come through now, 99.
05:25Chief, shouldn't the lights be out when you develop a negative?
05:27What narrowly, yes, but this is Control's new reverse film.
05:31It was invented by our lab technicians to avoid accidents,
05:34like people coming into the lab unexpectedly and turning on the lights
05:38and ruining important negatives.
05:40Oh, reverse film. In other words, it can stand the light, but it can't stand the darkness.
05:44Exactly.
05:45Oh, hi, 99. Chief, what are you doing?
05:47Oh, developing a negative.
05:49Oh, I better turn the light off.
05:52Max, turn the light on again.
05:55You know what you just did?
05:57I just turned the light on.
05:58Before that.
05:58I turned it off.
05:59Take a look at this negative.
06:02Oh, did you take that picture, Chief?
06:04Well, you made a terrible mistake.
06:06You broke one of the first rules of photography.
06:08What's that, Max?
06:09Well, he held his thumb over the lens.
06:11That was a big mistake, Chief.
06:12No, Max, that wasn't my big mistake.
06:14My big mistake was in hiring you.
06:16Oh, I meant besides that, Chief.
06:17Max, that photograph was taken by aerial reconnaissance of the area where you ejected the package from the plane last night.
06:24Reconnaissance spotted the package on the roof of an old house in a remote area, Max, and they took a picture of it.
06:30Oh, gee, that's great, Chief. I'd love to see that picture.
06:33You're looking at it.
06:34Oh.
06:35Chief, that pilot failed the basic rules of aerial photography.
06:40What's that, Max?
06:41You should never allow the propeller to get in front of the lens.
06:44Fortunately, the pilot knew the area very well.
06:47The package landed on the roof of the only house within a radius of 50 miles.
06:50But, Chief, if we know where the package is, why don't we just walk up to the house, ring the doorbell, say that something of ours is on the roof, and ask permission to get it?
06:58You'll never get into the house that way, 99.
07:00Why not?
07:00Because Hester Van Hooten rules that mansion with an iron hand.
07:03She hasn't let a visitor in there in the past 20 years.
07:06You and Max will be the first.
07:07The first what?
07:08Visitors.
07:08Well, I don't understand, Chief.
07:10If she hasn't let any visitors in there in 20 years, then how are we going to get in?
07:14We have a plan for you.
07:15What is it, Chief?
07:16We've arranged for a storm to hit the area.
07:18You've arranged for a storm?
07:20You know, Max, a storm with rain and thunder and lightning and...
07:25You've arranged for a storm, Chief?
07:27Here's 99.
07:28Our control scientists have developed a process whereby salting the clouds, we can produce rain in any designated area.
07:35That's fantastic, Chief.
07:36When the world hears about this...
07:37The world is not going to hear about this.
07:39That's why I say, Chief, the world will never hear about this.
07:41This has got to be one of control's most closely guarded secrets.
07:43One of the most closely guarded secrets that control...
07:45Why?
07:46We don't want the price of salt to go up.
07:49But how's the storm going to get us into Van Hooten's house?
07:5299 with the storm we have in mind, and you and Max as weary lost travelers,
07:56whose car is broken down, nobody will be able to turn you away.
08:01You can't come in.
08:02Go away.
08:06Max, what are we going to do?
08:07We can't just stand out here in the rain.
08:09Well, I know one thing you're going to do.
08:10What's that?
08:11Take it easy on the salt!
08:14How are we going to get in the house?
08:16I've got it, 99.
08:16Why didn't I think of it before?
08:18What?
08:18Well, we don't want to get in the house.
08:20We want to get up on top of the roof and get the package.
08:22So?
08:23So, instead of asking for food and shelter, why don't we just ask for a ladder?
08:26Oh, Max, they're not going to give a ladder to a strange couple?
08:29They will if we say we're eloping.
08:31But we're both out here!
08:32Well, I get to say together.
08:38Mrs. Van Hooten.
08:40Who was it, Hogarth?
08:42Two lost and weary travelers whose car broke down in the storm.
08:46What did they want?
08:48Food and shelter.
08:49I turned them away.
08:52Well done, Hogarth.
08:54Thank you, ma'am.
08:55And Hogarth?
08:57Yes, ma'am.
08:58First thing in the morning, let's get rid of that welcome mat out front.
09:05Hello again, Max.
09:19Let them in, Hogarth.
09:20But, madam, you said...
09:21Let them in.
09:23Yes, madam.
09:36You must forgive Hogarth.
09:38He's inconsiderate.
09:39And he never did have a very good memory.
09:42Hogarth.
09:45Take them to the west room.
09:46Give them dry clothes.
09:48Oh, well, that's very kind of you.
09:50I'd like to introduce myself.
09:51I'm Maxwell Smart.
09:52This is my wife, Mrs. Maxwell Smart.
09:54I'm Hester Van Hooten.
09:56This is my husband, Jason.
09:58Hello.
10:00Good, I'll come in my house.
10:02Dinner will be in an hour.
10:04Oh, good.
10:05What are we having?
10:06Huh?
10:06Oh.
10:07This way, please.
10:08Why did you let them in?
10:18Didn't you see her face?
10:20Well, no.
10:20It was dark in there, and I couldn't.
10:22Why?
10:23It was the face of my sister, Rebecca.
10:26Rebecca?
10:27That's ridiculous.
10:28I buried her 20 years ago.
10:30Nevertheless, she's back.
10:32Well, we'll have to do something about that.
10:35They must never learn the secret of this house.
10:38Tonight, when they're both asleep, let's let Sebastian out of his room.
10:43No.
10:44You know my orders?
10:46Sebastian never leaves this attic.
10:49Except on Christmas morning.
10:51After we've opened our gifts, he gets to eat the tree.
10:53The wine, Mrs. Van Hooken.
11:20Thank you, Hogarth.
11:23Which one contains the poison?
11:25The decanter on the left.
11:28Or is it the one on the right?
11:30No, I believe it's the one on the left.
11:33What do you have against Jason?
11:36Nothing, Mrs. Van Hooken.
11:39Sometimes I wonder.
11:44Jason, taste the wine.
11:47Hester, do I have to?
11:50Wine always keeps me awake.
11:52Only if you're lucky.
11:53Now, taste it.
12:01As you wish.
12:07Hester, if this should just happen to be my last glass of wine,
12:12would you please take good care of my pet hawk?
12:15I already did.
12:16I think I can forgive you.
12:17I don't care.
12:19You'll have to be my last glass of wine.
12:19I just thought I had to call someone one on my turn.
12:37Pray for dinner.
12:39And that out.
12:40If this is my first glass of wine,
12:41the Royal cafe русs can't be a long detail.
12:42Come on, Mr. Van Hooken.
12:43Good evening, everybody. My wife will be down in a minute.
13:05London, won't you please sit down?
13:07Oh, thank you.
13:09May I offer you a glass of wine?
13:13Say, that really looks delicious. What is that, pheasant?
13:17No, but it once killed a pheasant.
13:19And a cow.
13:21To your health, Mr. Smart.
13:24Eh? Oh, yes. Thank you.
13:28Oh, I'm awfully sorry it took me so long.
13:32I found this dress in the closet, Miss Van Hooten.
13:35I hope you don't mind my putting it on.
13:36Why are they all staring at me?
13:57Take a look at the portrait, 99.
14:01That was my sister, Rebecca. She left us 20 years ago.
14:05She's very lovely.
14:06You're the very image of her, my dear.
14:08Oh, well, thank you very much.
14:10Yes, as a matter of fact, you do look quite a bit like her, 99.
14:13Did you call her 99?
14:15Yes, I did.
14:16May I ask why?
14:17I don't know her name.
14:21Hogar!
14:22Oh, where is he?
14:23Oh, he's probably lurking in the shadows again.
14:29Ma'am?
14:30Hogar?
14:31Poor Rebecca.
14:32I mean, Mrs. Smart.
14:33A glass of wine.
14:35Yes, ma'am.
14:37What a lovely old house you have, Mrs. Van Hooten.
14:40We bought it in spite of the curse.
14:42What curse?
14:44Legend has it that those who dwell in this house never know what it is to love.
14:48I loved my hawk.
14:50This hawk once killed a cow, you know.
14:54Oh, I couldn't.
14:57Well, maybe a little.
15:00With my spaghetti.
15:02That will be all, Hogarth.
15:04A toast to our guests.
15:09Oh, I'm terribly sorry.
15:11I'll get it, 99.
15:1499, I'm going to make an excuse to leave the table, go up on the roof and get the package.
15:18Right, Max.
15:19Now, while I'm going, I don't want you to drink any of the wine or eat any of the food.
15:22Why not?
15:23Because I think they put something in the wine.
15:25How can you tell?
15:26What was that?
15:34Probably the wine steward.
15:37Mr. Smarter, take the candelabra and follow me.
15:44Come, Jason.
15:45Is he dead?
16:00Yes, but there are no marks on him.
16:02It looks like he died of fright.
16:04Either that or some other natural cause.
16:06Sebastian.
16:07Don't tell me he's loose.
16:13He's loose.
16:14I asked you not to tell me that.
16:16Well, somebody removed all the distributor caps from the cars and cut the telephone wires.
16:26Sebastian.
16:27Who is Sebastian?
16:2820 years ago, he met Rebecca and fell in love with her.
16:33They married and he brought her to this house.
16:35On the night of their wedding, she died, mysteriously, after drinking a glass of wine.
16:40Sebastian refused to believe she was dead and accused us of trying to take her away from him.
16:45So, we locked him in the attic.
16:48And he's been there for 20 years?
16:50And now, he's loose.
16:54Somewhere in this house.
16:56He's obviously mad.
16:58Well, I guess so.
17:00I remember once when my brother locked me in the closet for three hours.
17:03I was so mad at him, I didn't speak to him for a week.
17:06Mr. Smart, Sebastian broke out of that attic because he knows Rebecca is back.
17:11Mrs. Van Hooten, I know that I resemble your sister, but believe me, I'm not Rebecca.
17:16You are Rebecca.
17:18I knew at the moment I saw you in the doorway.
17:21But that's impossible.
17:22You said yourself that she's been dead for 20 years.
17:25That's true.
17:26I buried you myself in the basement.
17:29You see, 99...
17:31You buried her yourself?
17:33Jason's very handy around the house.
17:35Why did you come back?
17:37Mrs. Van Hooten, please believe me, I'm not your sister.
17:41Silence.
17:42Don't talk back to me, Rebecca.
17:44Mother isn't here to take your side anymore.
17:46She always did like you best.
17:48You had the nicest bedroom in the house, the loveliest clothes, and all the boyfriends.
17:54When Mother gave a party, it was for you.
17:55I stood against the wall and watched you dance the whole night through.
18:00You had the handsomest men.
18:02Bruce Rayburn, Clive Montague, Cedric Cedarhurst, and then Sebastian.
18:08And look what I ended up with.
18:10Well, if that's how you felt about me, why did you propose?
18:14Silence.
18:15Well, if all this is true, Mrs. Van Hooten, then I'm afraid you're in a great deal of trouble.
18:19I'm going to have to place you under arrest for the murder of your sister, Rebecca.
18:24Then my pet hawk.
18:25I didn't kill you, Rebecca.
18:32It was him.
18:35I saw it happen.
18:37It was a long time ago, but I remember it clearly.
18:40It was a night like this.
18:42Lightning, thunder.
18:44It was almost midnight, and I was taking a casual stroll in the garden.
18:50And then I heard you talking.
18:52Rebecca, I must know, am I the first man you've ever kissed?
18:58Of course you are, darling.
19:00Why do you men always ask such silly questions?
19:08And then the clock struck twelve.
19:09Sebastian?
19:11Max, how terrible.
19:27Sebastian.
19:29Max, how terrible.
19:31Yes, I guess he just couldn't adjust in the outside world.
19:37Open up in there. We're government agents.
19:39It's the Chief 99. Let him in.
19:41I'll watch these two. Right, Max.
19:43All right, come on, you two.
19:47Chief, what are you doing here?
19:49Well, I didn't hear from you. I figured something had gone wrong.
19:51Is Max all right? Yes, but I don't know for how long.
19:53Everyone in this house is a little weird.
19:55Hi, Chief. Hi, Max. Who's that?
19:57His name's Sebastian. What's he doing in the clock?
19:59He's dead. Well, that's no place to put a dead man, Max.
20:01I didn't put him there, Larrabee.
20:03A man in that condition belongs at home with his family.
20:05Max, did you get the package? I didn't have time, Chief.
20:07If rigor mortis sets in, he could break the clock.
20:09So many weird things have been happening in this house.
20:11Bodies turning up all over the place.
20:13Right, it's unsanitary.
20:15Larrabee, get up on the roof and get the package.
20:17Right, Chief.
20:19Sorry about your clock, lady.
20:23Would you mind telling me what's been going on?
20:25Well, it's a little involved, Chief, but I think I have it solved.
20:27There's another one up here, Chief.
20:29Who's that, Max?
20:30That's Hogarth, the butler.
20:31Shall I bring him down, Chief?
20:33Why, Larrabee?
20:34Well, if somebody didn't see him, they could trip and break their neck.
20:36Well, what do you suggest we do with him?
20:38You got another clock, lady?
20:40Larrabee, get the package.
20:42Are there any more, Max?
20:44Not that I know of, Chief.
20:45Who killed them?
20:46Well, Chief, the case was fairly simple.
20:50You see, the suspects had clear-cut motives.
20:53Hester Van Hooten.
20:55She hated her sister, Rebecca, and she was in love with Sebastian.
20:59So she became half crazy with jealousy when they were married.
21:02She poisoned Rebecca and had Jason bury her body in the cellar.
21:06Then Hogarth probably saw the whole thing, so she had to get rid of him.
21:10Then she busted down the door to the attic, shot Sebastian, dragged his body down here,
21:15and stuffed it into the bottom of the grandfather clock.
21:17It was an open and shut case, Chief.
21:20Except for one thing.
21:23There was Jason.
21:25You needed money, and you needed it badly.
21:27So you poisoned Rebecca and buried her in the cellar of the house.
21:31You were the only one who had a key to the attic.
21:33You were the only one who knew the secret of the grandfather clock.
21:36You were the only one who could have strangled Hogarth
21:39and still had enough strength to drag Sebastian downstairs,
21:42stuff him into the clock in 28 seconds flat.
21:45This, plus the fact that you never shaved, led me to believe that you were wearing a mask.
21:50But I wasn't really sure until tonight, when you wound the spaghetti from left to right.
21:57Well, there you have it, Chief.
22:00Have what?
22:01Huh?
22:02Yes, well, I knew that one of them was a murderer,
22:04but I didn't know which one, Chief.
22:06You see, there was something that puzzled me.
22:08One of the pieces of this jigsaw didn't fit.
22:10And then, suddenly, it came to me in a flash,
22:12and I realized that neither one of them was guilty.
22:15When did you realize that?
22:16Just now, Chief, when I looked up and saw Hogarth standing there with a gun in his hand.
22:21Don't let anybody move.
22:23Yes, it was me.
22:25I hated Rebecca, and I hated Hester.
22:29And as you can see, I wasn't too crazy about Sebastian either.
22:33And as for Jason, he's a thief, a liar, and a blackmailer.
22:39But he's my brother, and I'm proud of him.
22:44They all laughed at me, the way I walked, and the way I talked.
22:49They looked down on me because I was tall.
22:52How's the weather up there, Hogarth?
22:54You get a nosebleed when you walk across a thick carpet?
22:58And they ordered me about.
