Max comes home from work one evening to find 99 in bed, with a black eye. She's actually an impostor — the real 99 (who gave her the black eye) was kidnapped by KAOS but had escaped, and was now with the Chief — but the Chief orders Max to pretend that he's taken in by the deception and for 99 to return to captivity, the better to figure out what KAOS is up to.

00:00No, Mother, I really didn't mind being alone tonight.
00:09Besides, by the time I got the twins to sleep, I was so exhausted.
00:1399, I'm home.
00:14Oh, Mother, Max is here now. I'll talk to you tomorrow, okay? Bye-bye.
00:18Max, I'm upstairs in bed.
00:20I'll be right up.
00:21Oh, when you come up the stairs, turn the light on.
00:2399, I don't need the light on to find my way up the stairs.
00:26I know that, Max, but I got a new end table today, and I want you to see where I put it.
00:31Oh, really? Where'd you put it?
00:33Right at the top of the stairs.
00:36Oh, Max, are you all right?
00:38I'm okay, 99. I'll be right up as soon as I turn the light on.
00:42How do you like the end table?
00:44I think it's very pretty, 99.
00:46Do you really like it?
00:48Yes, but I'm not too crazy about the way it fits.
00:51Oh, Max, you've broken it.
00:53Oh, no, 99, it's not broken.
00:55I'd say it was more like a bad sprain.
00:58Max, I mean the table.
01:00Oh, the table.
01:01Yes, well, the top is in pretty bad shape, but a couple of the legs are still pretty good.
01:1699, what's the matter with your eye?
01:18Oh, I was leaning over to pick up some diapers, and I hid it on the edge of the bassinet.
01:23Oh.
01:24Well, how did you enjoy the day with your mother?
01:27Oh, she wasn't here, Max.
01:29I felt like I wanted to be alone, so I just called her and told her not to come.
01:34Is there anything wrong, Randy Nairn?
01:36No, Max. Why do you ask?
01:38Well, I don't know.
01:39It's just not like you to cancel out a date with your mother.
01:41I mean, you enjoy spending the day so much with her.
01:44Oh, well, I just had so many things to do, and, you know, with you coming home late,
01:47it just seemed like the perfect opportunity to do them.
01:50Oh, darling.
01:51I'm exhausted, love.
01:53Good night.
01:54Good night.
01:54Well, I can't, Chief.
02:1899 just went to sleep.
02:2099 is in her bed?
02:22Well, of course she's in her bed.
02:24Where do you think she sleeps?
02:25In the closet?
02:26Max, listen to me.
02:27Don't repeat a word of this to 99.
02:29Do nothing, say nothing.
02:31You go right to sleep, and the first thing tomorrow morning,
02:33I want you here in my office.
02:34Have you got that?
02:35Right, Chief.
02:35Would you mind telling me what it's all about?
02:37I don't know what it's all about, Max.
02:39All I know is that that woman in the other bed is not 99.
02:44Are you sure, Chief?
02:46I'm positive.
02:54I don't know what it's all about, Max.
02:55I don't know what it's all about, Max.
02:56I don't know what it's all about.
02:57I don't know what it's all about, Max.
02:58I don't know what it's all about, Max.
02:59I don't know what it's all about, Max.
03:00I don't know what it's all about.
03:01I don't know what it's all about, Max.
03:02I don't know what it's all about, Max.
03:03I don't know what it's all about, Max.
03:04I don't know what it's all about, Max.
03:05I don't know what it's all about, Max.
03:06Let's go.
03:36Let's go.
04:06Well, whoever she is, she's there all right. Sound asleep in your bed.
04:17Well, I'm certainly glad I put clean sheets on this morning.
04:20Let's go over it again. I want to hear every single detail.
04:24I had just put the twins to bed. I went downstairs and I heard the doorbell ring.
04:28I went to the door and asked, who's there?
04:31Melnick's Furniture. We're delivering your end table.
04:34So I opened the door and the man came in with the table.
04:36Just put it over there.
04:38I turned to close the door and that's when I saw the woman.
04:42I thought I was looking in a mirror.
04:43It was absolutely uncanny. She had my face, my figure, my clothes, but not my gun.
04:53She told me that I was to go with the delivery man and that she was going to take my place.
04:57Well, I said she'd have to shoot me before she'd get me to leave my children.
05:01Go on.
05:01Well, she said it would only be for a few days and she promised she'd take perfect care of the twins.
05:06And I said, what about my husband?
05:09And then she promised she'd take perfect care of my husband and that's when I hit her.
05:13That's interesting. Where'd you hit her?
05:14In my right eye.
05:15Huh?
05:16In her right eye.
05:17And then they blindfolded me and they put me in the back of the truck.
05:20They took me to their warehouse and they locked me in the basement.
05:23Well, it's fortunate for us, 99, that you got away.
05:25They're really going to be surprised when they find out I'm gone.
05:28You mean they don't know you got away?
05:30No.
05:3099, you've got to go back there right away.
05:32Why?
05:3399, Chaos has gone to a great deal of trouble to find someone who looks exactly like you and train her to take your place.
05:39They must be up to something big.
05:41You mean when they find out I've escaped, they'll call it off?
05:43Exactly.
05:44We've got to let them think their plan is succeeding so we can find out what it is.
05:4899, I'm afraid you're going to have to go back there and remain their prisoner for a while.
05:51But, Chief, what about the twins?
05:53Well, I'll have Max arrange with your mother to take them for a few days.
05:56But first, I've got to convince Max that that woman in the apartment with him is not you.
06:00I know, Chief.
06:01Let me call Max.
06:02I'll talk to him.
06:03That's too risky.
06:03She might be listening in on the extension.
06:06I know how to prove it to him.
06:0899, you've got to get back to Melnick's warehouse.
06:10What are you going to do, Chief?
06:11I'm going to telephone Max and tell him to wake that woman and kiss her.
06:14What?
06:1699, no two women kiss alike.
06:18The second Max kisses Ariel, no, it's not you.
06:20Chief, that's a terrible idea.
06:22Why?
06:23What if she's better?
06:33Morning, sweetheart.
06:34Oh, hello, love.
06:36Well, you look terrific this morning.
06:38Your eye cleared up.
06:39All the black and blue is gone.
06:40I put some makeup on it.
06:41Now you sit down and I'll go get your breakfast.
06:44Just some toast and coffee, 99.
06:46I have to be at headquarters early this morning.
06:56There we go.
07:03Who's eating with us?
07:05No, darling, that's for you.
07:0699, this is ridiculous.
07:08I never eat a big breakfast.
07:09You know that.
07:10Well, I know that, love.
07:12But I just read an article that said breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
07:16Everyone should eat a big breakfast.
07:18But 99, I'm trying to lose weight.
07:20You yourself said I was getting heavy.
07:22Well, I don't care what I told you.
07:24Max, I want you to be healthy.
07:27Yes, well, that's ridiculous, 99.
07:28I couldn't eat all of that.
07:30Oh, Max, I spend so much time trying to please you.
07:34The least you can do is eat it.
07:36I'm sorry, 99.
07:37I don't care how nice you ask me.
07:39I'm not going to eat all of that food.
07:41Max, please.
07:43No, I'm sorry, 99.
07:44It's out of the question.
07:4699.
07:5199?
07:54Pass the salt.
08:01Max, you've got to believe me.
08:03That woman is an imposter.
08:04But, Chief, how do we know that the 99 who was here last night isn't the imposter?
08:08And the 99 in my apartment is the real 99?
08:10And that this 99 lied when she said 99 was an imposter.
08:14Would you say that again?
08:15Huh?
08:15Would you say that again?
08:16Say what again?
08:17What you just said about the 99 who was here last night being the imposter.
08:20And the 99 in the apartment being the real 99 and this 99 lying when she said that 99 in the apartment was the imposter.
08:27Would you say that again, Chief?
08:28No, Max, I want you to say it.
08:29No, Max, I want you to say it.
08:30It's your theory.
08:30And I want you to say it again so I can see if it makes any sense.
08:33Yes, yes.
08:34Oh, well, all right, Chief, this is what I was getting at.
08:36You claim that the 99 who was here last night is the real 99 and the 99 in my apartment is the fake 99.
08:42But how do we really know if this is the real 99 when she could be the fake 99 and the 99 in my apartment who this 99 claims is the fake 99 could be the real 99.
08:52And this 99 is only saying the real 99 is the fake 99 so we'd arrest the real 99 then the fake 99 would take her place and we'd think that the fake 99 was in jail when it was the other way around.
09:02The real 99 would be in jail and the fake 99 would be in my apartment.
09:07Well, that's very logical, Max, but it's much too obvious.
09:10How can I make you believe that the woman being held prisoner is the real 99?
09:14Chief, how can you be so positive?
09:16Because she knew things that only the real 99 would know.
09:20She knew where control headquarters was located.
09:22She knew where the secret entrance was.
09:24She knew what the password was.
09:26She even knew about the beauty mark.
09:27What beauty mark?
09:28The beauty mark on your body.
09:30She didn't tell you where it was.
09:31Yes, she did, Max.
09:32Oh, well, that's not fair, Chief.
09:33She promised she'd never tell.
09:35Max, she had to.
09:36She was proving that she was the real 99.
09:38Now, who else but your wife would know about that beauty mark?
09:41Lindquist.
09:41Who's Lindquist?
09:42Dr. Lindquist.
09:43He delivered me.
09:44Oh, well, he would have to know.
09:45Well, of course he would have to know.
09:46He slapped me on it when he brought me into the world.
09:49Max, how can I convince you that that woman is an imposter?
09:52Well, you know, Chief, I've been giving it a lot of thought.
09:54And I think you may have something there.
09:56Because this 99 is doing a lot of things that the real 99 would never do.
10:00Like what?
10:00Well, for example, this morning she gave me a big breakfast.
10:03Now, 99 knows that I never eat a big breakfast.
10:05Then she sat on my lap and fed me.
10:07Now, 99 would never do that.
10:09And when I leave in the morning for work, 99 just gives me a nice peck on the cheek and
10:13says goodbye.
10:14Then what did she do?
10:15Well, she put her arms around me, kissed me full on my lips, and wouldn't stop.
10:19I almost didn't make it to work this morning.
10:20You mean she wouldn't let go?
10:21Well, to tell you the truth, Chief, I didn't feel like coming to work after that.
10:26Max, the most important thing is to not to arouse her suspicions.
10:29You have got to make her think that you really believe that she's 99.
10:32Right, Chief.
10:33That when we find out what their plans are, we'll move right in.
10:36Now, remember, this could take as much as a week.
10:38Well, Chief, if I have to spend a week with this woman to help control solve this case,
10:42I'm willing to do it.
10:43I'm proud of you, Max.
10:44And if I have to spend two weeks with this woman, I'm willing to do that to you.
10:47Max, remember, you're a married man.
10:49You're telling me?
10:49I've got two wives.
10:51Chief, where do you think they have her hidden?
10:53I'll show you.
10:55Do you have her hidden behind the wall?
10:56No, Max, I'm going to show you on the map.
10:58Now, does the name Melnick mean anything to you?
11:00Melnick, Melnick.
11:01What's his first name?
11:02Melnick.
11:03Melnick, Melnick.
11:04Nope.
11:05If I had heard a name like that before, I would have remembered him.
11:07No, Max, his first name is Melnick.
11:10His second name is Archer.
11:12He designs and manufactures bedroom sets.
11:14He has a large warehouse here in town.
11:17Oh, yes, of course.
11:18I remember now.
11:19Melnick Archer.
11:21Wasn't he the one that was suspected once of selling bedroom sets to Iron Curtain countries?
11:25That's him, Max.
11:26Of course, I remember now.
11:28Put a red in your bed, Melnick.
11:30That's what they used to call her.
11:31Right.
11:31Now, they've got 99 hidden in his warehouse right here on Harbor Boulevard.
11:36Gee, I hope she's all right, Chief.
11:38Well, she's in no immediate danger.
11:39They've made her very comfortable, and when she was here last night,
11:42I issued her controls new fingernail phones.
11:44She'll be able to report to us from time to time when she can.
11:48Chief, 99 called from a furniture warehouse a few minutes ago,
11:50but I told you you were busy.
11:52You what?
11:52Didn't she tell you it was important?
11:54No, she said it was urgent, but she didn't say anything about being important.
11:58You think something's wrong, Chief?
11:59No, the fact that she called is a good sign.
12:01It's probably about the twins.
12:02I promised her that you'd have her mother take them for a few days.
12:05Well, I'd better call her and find out if she will.
12:06Listen, Max, the twins can stay at our place for a few days.
12:09My wife would love taking care of them,
12:10and they'd have a lot of fun playing in the sand.
12:12You have a place at the beach, Larrabee?
12:13No, but we have a very sandy apartment.
12:17Thanks, just the same, Larrabee.
12:18Anytime, Max.
12:19Hold it, Larrabee.
12:20Yeah, Chief?
12:20You're not going to get away with that one that easily.
12:23Which one?
12:23Explain it to me how you have a very sandy apartment.
12:26Oh, well, there's nothing to explain, Chief.
12:28We can't get the sand there because our vacuum cleaner's broken.
12:31Larrabee, if you don't live at the beach,
12:33how can you have all that sand in your apartment?
12:36Oh, well, we've been talking about moving to the beach,
12:37and we wanted to see if we'd like it.
12:39Thank you, Larrabee.
12:43Hey, Chief, I don't know whether this is important to you or not,
12:46but we don't like it.
12:47Too much sand.
12:52Wine's busy, Chief.
12:53I'd better call back later.
12:56Strange man, that Larrabee.
12:57You know, I was just thinking that, Chief.
12:58When he said that business about the vacuum cleaner not working
13:02and not being able to sweep up the sand,
13:03well, why in the world didn't he use a broom to sweep up the sand?
13:07Max, are you sure you and Larrabee aren't related?
13:09You know, a lot of people have asked me that lately, Chief.
13:14Control headquarters, this is the Chief.
13:16Hello, Chief.
13:16I got back just fine.
13:18They didn't even know I was gone.
13:19Oh, that's good, 99.
13:21Are you all right?
13:21Are you comfortable?
13:22Am I comfortable?
13:24I wish I had a cell like this at home.
13:25I want to speak to him, Chief.
13:27Hold on, 99.
13:28Max wants to talk to you.
13:30Hi, 99.
13:31Hello, Max, my love.
13:33How are you?
13:34Oh, I'm fine.
13:34I had a big breakfast this morning.
13:36I feel great.
13:37Max, you never eat a big breakfast.
13:39Yes, I know, but this woman insisted.
13:41And do you know what she did while I was eating breakfast?
13:43She cleaned and vacuumed and dusted the entire apartment.
13:46You won't recognize her when you get home.
13:47Gee, Max, you sound like you don't miss me at all.
13:49I miss you terribly, darling.
13:51This woman may be a great cook and neat and over-affectionate,
13:54but it's not the same as you.
13:56Oh, Max, have you called my mother about taking the children?
13:59Yes, I did call her, 99, but the line was busy.
14:01I'll have to call back later.
14:03Max, someone's coming.
14:04I've got to go now.
14:05Gee, I wish you were going to be home tonight, 99.
14:07Oh, so do I, darling.
14:09We're having beef stroganoff.
14:12Goodbye, Max.
14:13I thought I overheard you talking to someone, Mrs. Smart.
14:30You did, Mr. Archer.
14:32I was talking to myself.
14:33I do that when I'm lonely.
14:35Get used to being alone, Mrs. Smart.
14:37You're going to be spending the rest of your life in a cell.
14:40But I was told I'd only be kept here a few days.
14:43Yes, that's true.
14:44And then you will be placed behind bars in a federal penitentiary.
14:49For what?
14:50For the murder of your husband, Maxwell Smart.
14:52So that's your plan?
15:02Yes.
15:03Maxwell Smart will be found dead by you when you return to your apartment tomorrow morning.
15:08Melnick?
15:13Telephone call for you in your office.
15:15Mrs. Maxwell Smart is calling.
15:17You'll excuse me, my dear.
15:22I thought I overheard her talking when I came in here.
15:25She may have a concealed communication device with her.
15:28You think so?
15:29Shh.
15:29It's possible.
15:31But you remain here and watch her.
15:33We wouldn't want anything to go wrong now.
15:36Right.
15:45Things are going even better than we expected.
15:4899's mother just called.
15:49She's coming over in about an hour to take the twins for a few days.
15:52Excellent, Sonia.
15:54Yes.
15:55It leaves me free to attend to Mrs. Smart.
15:57At what rate are you feeding him the poison?
16:00I'm giving it to him in thirds.
16:02I give him one third for breakfast.
16:04He should be home shortly for lunch.
16:05I'll give him some more then.
16:07And I'll give him the rest for dinner tonight.
16:09By tomorrow morning, Maxwell Smart will be dead.
16:12And the autopsy will reveal that he was poisoned.
16:15By his lovely wife.
16:18The beautiful plan.
16:19When will the first symptoms of the poison start to show?
16:22It should start shortly after lunch.
16:25He'll begin to get very sleepy.
16:27And then he'll lose his equilibrium and fall down a lot.
16:30Won't that attract suspicion?
16:32Not with Maxwell Smart.
16:33Hi, Chief.
16:41Hello, Max.
16:43Has 99 called yet?
16:45Not since this morning.
16:46They must be watching her very closely.
16:48Boy, am I tired.
16:49Where have you been?
16:50I went home for lunch.
16:52Max, you never eat lunch at home.
16:53I know that, Chief.
16:54But 99's imposter doesn't.
16:56She insisted that I come home for lunch.
16:58So I didn't want to arouse her suspicions and I went.
17:01I wonder why she insisted you come home for lunch.
17:03I don't know, Chief.
17:04What difference does it make?
17:05It can't do any harm.
17:06I guess you're right.
17:08Max, are you all right?
17:10I'm fine, Chief.
17:11I just lost my balance for a minute.
17:13Max, it's driving me crazy.
17:15What could chaos's plan be?
17:17I mean, why would they kidnap 99 and then replace her with someone that looks and sounds exactly like her?
17:21I don't know, Chief.
17:22I've been giving it a lot of thought.
17:24And the way I feel...
17:26Max, are you sure you're all right?
17:28I mean, you've fallen down twice in less than a minute.
17:31Even for you, that's a lot.
17:32I'm okay, Chief.
17:33I just got a little dizzy.
17:34Are you sure?
17:35I'm positive.
17:38What keeps bothering me is what their plan is.
17:41When are they going to make their move?
17:44Max, Max.
17:46Max, I think you're coming down with something.
17:50Yes, well, if I am, Chief, I'm coming down with it a lot.
17:53I think you better go home and get to bed.
17:54I think you need some rest.
18:01Larrabee, Max isn't feeling very well.
18:04I want you to take him home.
18:08Okay, Max.
18:09Are you ready to go?
18:10Are you ready to go?
18:10What are you doing?
18:32I'm not doing anything.
18:35I'm biting my thumbnail.
18:46Well, Marcus.
18:48And how is our prisoner this evening?
18:51Nervous and impatient.
18:52Look, she hardly touched the dinner.
18:54Well, that's more than I can say for Mr. Smart.
18:56He's been eating splendidly.
18:58What's that supposed to mean?
18:59Well, it means that at this very moment, he's having his dinner.
19:03And with it, enough poison to finish him.
19:05So that's how you plan to kill Max.
19:08Exactly.
19:09And now, if you'll excuse me, my dear, I have work to attend to.
19:12The big sale starts tomorrow.
19:15Marcus.
19:16Release her first thing in the morning.
19:18Before we open the warehouse to the public.
19:20And get rid of the cell.
19:21Place the furniture in the showroom on sale.
19:24Make the price irresistible so that when she comes back with the police,
19:26she won't be able to cooperate her story.
19:29Right.
19:43What's wrong?
19:44I have a cramp in my leg.
19:47Oh, come, come.
19:48You don't expect me to fall for an old trick like that, do you?
19:51Well, surely you don't think I'd be stupid enough to pull an old trick like that.
19:54This always happens when I'm nervous and tense.
19:57Ow!
19:58Well, why don't you try to relax?
19:59Maybe it'll go away.
20:00Oh, I wish my husband were here.
20:03He always massages my leg and makes the cramp go away.
20:06Well, if it would help, I'll massage it for you.
20:09Oh, would you please?
20:10And please hurry!
20:12What is it here?
20:20Right down here.
20:22Oh!
20:27Hello, Chief.
20:29I found out their plan.
20:31They're poisoning Max.
20:33There's not a minute to lose.
20:34I'm on my way to the apartment now.
20:36Good work, 99.
20:37I'll have Larrabee take Melnick Archer into custody and meet you at the apartment later.
20:41Larrabee, you're to go to Melnick's furniture warehouse.
20:44Now?
20:44Of course now.
20:46But the sale doesn't start until tomorrow morning.
20:48Larrabee, I don't have time to argue.
20:50Just go to the warehouse and arrest Melnick Archer.
20:53Right, Chief.
20:53You're also to arrest a man named Marcus.
20:55Marcus?
20:56How will I know him?
20:57You'll know him.
20:58You'll be the man who starts shooting at you when you arrest Melnick Archer.
21:01Oh.
21:02Is he a good shot?
21:03I hope so.
21:06Come on, Max.
21:10Just one more bite.
21:11No, no, 99.
21:12Please.
21:13I'm so full.
21:13I couldn't eat another thing and I'm so sleepy.
21:16Well, Max, at least eat some of the cream pie.
21:19Max, if you eat the cream pie, you can lie down on the sofa and go to sleep.
21:23Sleep?
21:24Oh.
21:25Okay, 99.
21:26I'll eat the cream pie.
21:31Come on, darling.
21:32One big bite should do it.
21:34Max, don't!
21:35Oh, hi, 99.
21:37You don't happen to have some bicarbonate of soda on you, do you?
21:40No.
21:41What are you doing here?
21:42I escaped.
21:43Now get away from my husband.
21:45Very well.
21:47Max.
21:52Get up.
21:53Put your hands up.
21:59Hold it right there.
22:00Chief.
22:01Drop the gun and put your hands up.
22:04Not you, Larrabee.
22:06You heard what I said.
22:08Drop the gun.
22:11Stay away from that gun.
22:13But, Chief, I'm 99.
22:14She's the imposter.
22:15Don't you believe her, Chief.
22:17I'm 99.
22:18That's not true, Chief.
22:19I am.
22:20Ask Max.
22:21All right, Max.
22:22Which one is it?
22:23Huh?
22:24Your wife.
22:24Which one is your wife?
22:26Oh.
22:26You're pointing at Larrabee.
22:43Chief.
22:44The eyes.
22:46They're both the same color.
22:48No, Chief.
22:49The imposter has a black eye.
22:51She covered it with makeup.
22:52That's right, Chief.
22:53Don't you remember?
22:54I told you that I socked her in her right eye.
22:56That's right.
22:59Wipe the makeup off your right eye.
23:01Sure, Chief.
23:05Good work, 99.
23:07Oh, Max.
23:08We've got to get you to the hospital
23:10and get your stomach pumped.
23:11Larrabee, give 99 a hand.
23:15Be with you in a minute.
23:17Yeah, this is good.
23:18No.
23:24Oh.
23:46Oh.
23:47Oh.
23:47Oh.
23:47Oh.
23:48Oh.
