02:28Welcome to Beyond the Tape.
02:43I'm your host, Mark Bassan.
02:44Welcome, Trinidad and Tobago.
02:46And of course, our global viewers.
02:49It's Monday, and I'm hopeful that everybody had a very enjoyable weekend.
02:53And of course, we had Mother's Day, and you would have pampered your mother if she's alive.
02:59And of course, you would have shared memories with others if she was not.
03:03And certainly, a lot has happened over the last 48 hours.
03:08One of the biggest news, of course, is on the weekend, the Director of Public Prosecutions sending out a release indicating that all charges against Commissioner of Police Erla Haywood-Christopher was dropped.
03:23And he said, based on the full court test, which evaluates the evidential and public interest stages, and concluded there was no realistic prospect of conviction for any offense.
03:34Additionally, no improper motives or unlawful considerations are found in the Commissioner's actions.
03:40As a result, the matter will not proceed further.
03:44Now, following that, of course, this morning, there was a court constitutional motion hearing.
03:50And in that, two things occurred.
03:54One was that she was then reinstated as Commissioner of Police.
03:58And secondly, however, the judge ruled that the Police Commission did nothing wrong by suspending Ms. Erla Haywood-Christopher until, of course, the investigation had concluded.
04:12And of course, Ms. Christopher, following this announcement by the court, and of course, she would have met with Minister of Homeland, Mr. Roger Alexander,
04:21where there was a brief discussion, and then there was also a handover back to her becoming, well, fully the Commissioner of Police once again.
04:31Let's listen to what she had to say.
04:33First, let me thank God, because only, only God.
04:43So I thank God, I thank my attorneys.
04:46I have been vindicated, which I expected, in my 43 years of service.
04:53I have never been, there's no allegations of any misconduct, be it criminal or otherwise.
05:00My service has always been with integrity.
05:06But, other than that, I reserve any further commitments.
05:10I expect my Heavenly Father to take good care of me.
05:15Whatever God has in store for me, that is what will happen.
05:19I believe I'm a professional, and there's no animosity.
05:24I don't know if she has any animosity, but I have no.
05:26So, following that decision, of course, the Commissioner's Attorney, Ms. Pamela Elder, Senior Counsel,
05:36indicated that they were contemplating appealing decision of the court in terms of the Police Commission not being wrong,
05:44or there was no illegality in, of course, suspending her.
05:48And, secondly, Ms. Elder made it very clear to the media, this afternoon as well,
05:54that they were contemplating taking legal action against the police officers that were involved in the arrest of the Commissioner,
06:03as well as those who were also responsible for it.
06:06So, certainly, we're going to be looking at that, of course.
06:08You know, it's just two more days before the tenure of the Commissioner comes to an end,
06:13and we'll see what happens thereafter.
06:15And, of course, today is Monday, and joined today by us is Captain Valence Rambaut of the Hunters Search and Rescue Team.
06:23Welcome, sir.
06:25Thank you, Mark, and a pleasant good evening to our viewers on TV6 and Beyond the Cape.
06:30And let me join you, Mark, in wishing the mothers of Trinidad and Tobago a happy Monday Mother's Day
06:37from Hunters Search and Rescue Team and those of us here at TV6.
06:41Mark, it was an eventful week for us as well.
06:45And, as you know by now, last night there was a bit of a shake in the country at 5.5 magnitude earthquake.
06:54Within minutes, we recorded 1,100 comments on our page,
06:58and thank God there was no one reporting injury to person or damage to property.
07:05So, I think that that went well.
07:08But it reminds us that we sit on the Caribbean tectonic plate,
07:13and that earthquakes are common to us,
07:17and that we always have to be prepared for whenever big 6.8, 6.9 and higher strikes.
07:25The next thing, Mark, is that I'm following what you presented with respect to the hierarchy of police service
07:35and how it has been unfolding.
07:37And my concern really would be on the return of the commission of police to have substantive posts,
07:46whether there would be any, what is called, institutional discomfort resulting from that.
07:53And we went through this a couple months ago, a few months ago.
07:58And I pray and hope that there will be a smooth transition for her back to the seat of commission of police.
08:07And then we wait to see whether an extension would be granted to her contract
08:13or whether one of the DCPs continue to steer the police service
08:20when that position becomes vacant.
08:25Sydney, a lot of things there to consider.
08:27And, of course, we're going to be monitoring that for you as the days go by.
08:32But let's take a quick look now at our headlines.
09:07All right, we're going to take a quick break and we'll be back.
09:11Stay with us.

10:50Have a great day.
11:20I'm your host, Mark Wissan, joined today by Captain Valence Rambert of the Hunters Search and Rescue Team.
11:26And some very troubling images.
11:29Early this morning, along the Olton Road, Arima area, a collision between a maxi taxi and a truck.
11:39Apparently, at least five persons were hurt, including two students.
11:45The incident occurred around 7.50 a.m., according to police reports.
11:50A truck was driven by an employee of the Bartholomew Transport Company Limited.
11:54It was proceeding west along the PBR.
11:57Upon reaching the intersection of Olton Road and the priority bus route in Arima,
12:00the driver signaled to turn north.
12:03And at the same time, a 25-seat maxi taxi, driven by Jenna Galino of Arima,
12:09was proceeding in the same direction, collided with one another in the maxi taxi,
12:14then lost control and crashed head-on into a lamp hole on the northern side of the roadway.
12:19Five persons were hurt, including the driver and four passengers,
12:23two of whom were students of the El Dorado East Secondary School.
12:28They sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken to the Arima Hospital.
12:33We understand that Acting Commissioner of Police, Junior Benjamin,
12:37and Minister of Homeland Security, Mr. Alexander, Roger Alexander,
12:41visited the scene of the serious road traffic accident.
12:43So, certainly, this has been at least the third or fourth accident in the last couple of days
12:49along the priority bus route in various areas.
12:52Various intersections.
12:53Yes.
12:53I was following the program beyond the tape during the week, and I saw that.
12:58But I just want to wish those who were into the speedy recovery,
13:02including the driver, two adults and two children who were hospitalized,
13:08and I really wish them well.
13:10But I did recall viewing during the week these several road traffic accidents on the priority bus route,
13:19and it caused some more surveillance, and, you know, some better safety with respect to driving on the priority bus route.
13:29Yes, certainly.
13:30All right, and on Sunday night, we definitely, this is not good news for anybody,
13:36but a 15-year-old boy, his name is Zane Allen, a promising footballer,
13:44and was shot in the head in the Maloney area while hanging out with some friends at Building 12.
13:51Apparently, gunmen came into the area and opened fire.
13:54Everybody took cover, and then apparently Mr. Allen, young Allen, got up and bullet struck him in the head.
14:00Very worrying, of course, because people are wondering where you see if they're in the confines of a house or apartment, rather.
14:09And it is reminiscent of the shooting that took the life of another footballer,
14:14Ezekiel Randall Singh, in the La Hockete area in April, I believe April 15th,
14:20when gunmen opened fire on a group of people.
14:23And it was really sad, you know, that, I mean, when you listen to the comments made about Mr. Allen,
14:29who just helped his team get a final, certainly being in the wrong place at the wrong time,
14:36or even just being in the right place and persons come up and just open fire in a group,
14:41not knowing unsuspectingly that you may not have been the target, but you are injured or even killed in some instances.
14:47And apart from the incident in April, over the years, we've seen children being counted as collateral damage
14:55with respect to these ongoing gang war fears and the use of firearms.
15:02So let me extend my condolence to the family.
15:06Coming up in the week, I heard the Minister of Education extending condolences
15:12and really condemning the act, because this is two young men who were into sports,
15:18who would have had a bright future, and they've now lost their lives.
15:22Yes, certainly.
15:23And also over the weekend, there was an unfortunate murder of Isaiah Sozano, a.k.a. Pablo,
15:31shot and killed at Lauki Trace in Penal on Sunday morning.
15:35Passerby and, you know, relatives were on the scene immediately, certainly a relative there,
15:44overcome with grief, had to be contained by other friends and neighbours and relatives
15:50following this incident.
15:53That certainly, you know, was rather troubling.
15:56Yeah, that same road we marched and walked down earlier in the year
16:00on our search for America, Harry Lauki Trace, who is missing since January 2025.
16:08And in the video, if you just go up the hill, that's where America Harry lived.
16:13And so we know the area well.
16:14And there are several ongoing clashes between gangs in that area.
16:20Sundries Road, Market Hill in Penal, and Lauki Trace.
16:25So it's an area familiar to us, and we know some of the characters there.
16:30We met them.
16:31We asked them about America Harry.
16:33And so we do know Pablo.
16:35We did speak with him about America Harry.
16:39So it's ongoing gang warfare, and young men's lives being lost unnecessarily
16:46on the streets of Trinidad and Tobago.
16:49So, yes, unfortunately, on Mother's Day yesterday, another woman lost her life, you know,
16:57with a 138 or thereabouts.
17:00On Sunday night in the Snake Valley, Laval Tilleria, she was stabbed several times about her body
17:06by a person well-known to her.
17:08And, of course, the police later held that suspect, who was from the Belmont area.
17:16So really a tragic end to her mother.
17:18I think she left behind a child as well.
17:21A child as well.
17:22No way for a mother, you know, in this circumstance to have passed.
17:27Yes, I'm happy that they held someone for it, because just before the program,
17:31I read that someone is in custody, and hopefully we could get some justice for her.
17:36But rather unfortunate that the children will have to grow up without a mother.
17:42And this is the continuation of the violence in the society.
17:46Yes.
17:47And sadly, of course, there was another road accident in the Point Forte area that left
17:55one young man dead and one other person injured.
18:00His name is Emilio Diaz O'Connor Espinosa of the Success Road in Lavalentale.
18:06That's the accident there.
18:09The car burst into flames.
18:11And I think Emilio is about 25 years of age.
18:15He passed away, and the other passenger of that car was taken to a hospital where they,
18:23that's Emilio there.
18:26Unfortunately, one of the persons in the car, and he passed.
18:30He passed.
18:31Yes.
18:31Early in the week, he highlighted another vehicle on fire where a mother and a child,
18:36but they escaped unharmed.
18:38And this one is totally different where it resulted in the loss of a human life.
18:45And I think they have to get to the bottom of these cars that just suddenly burst on fire.
18:52I don't know if it's electric or hybrid related, but they have to get to the bottom of it.
18:57Yes, certainly.
18:59And I know that we didn't get a chance to talk about emissions,
19:02but I know you have a couple you would just like to share with us.
19:04Oh, yeah.
19:05Over the weekend, what might have transpired?
19:07Well, we did quite a few as we left here.
19:09Monday night, as promised, we went on to the promenade to look for Marlon Henwood right here outside Express House.
19:19Right.
19:19And this is us out there any night canvassing people.
19:22This is a famous chicken guy there.
19:25He's always there.
19:27And he knows everybody who utilizes the promenade, and he was very helpful,
19:32but he did not see Marlon Henwood.
19:34There is a $10,000 reward for this missing gentleman from Superior.
19:40And we continue to work with his brother, Anthony, to try to locate him.
19:44And then, very quickly, when Monday night, while we were on the promenade,
19:50some of our teammates were down in Miaro on Monday night looking for a young man who drowned in Miaro,
19:57Samir Ragbear.
19:59And I was there early on Tuesday morning, Mark 4 a.m. in the morning.
20:05You know, we were present on the beach in Miaro on Tuesday and on Wednesday, trying to assist his family.
20:11And then on Wednesday at about 1 p.m. thereabouts, his body got entangled in the fisherman's net.
20:22And thankfully, he was brought to shore.
20:24And so we were out there for three days, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
20:29And then came a report.
20:32We had a report that one Mahindra Sipasad, Mahindranad Sipasad, and his vehicle, PVD 2038, went missing about a week ago.
20:45And we went there on Saturday to assist the family.
20:49Now, this is quarry territory up in Valencia.
20:53And we spent the, you know, these days are extremely hot.
20:57So we spent that entire day.
20:59There's no vegetative cover to shelter us in the quarries.
21:02But we spent the entire day going through some quarries based on information we obtained.
21:09And we've been unsuccessful in locating.
21:11So that was the vehicle that he was last seen in, that we just saw?
21:14Yes, yeah.
21:15Right.
21:16And this is us in the quarry.
21:18Moving through the quarry, lots of excavation going on there.
21:22So we had to be in and out of those sand pits and gravel pits.
21:27And then on our way home, Mark, just at the corner of my eye, I was passenger in the vehicle getting home
21:36when I spotted two lights about 200 feet off the roadway.
21:42And there it is.
21:45We had reached in the nick of time.
21:47A truck ran off the road 200 feet into the bushes there.
21:51And this is me trying to get down there on my way up.
21:55I didn't film the three guys.
21:58They were just to decide.
21:59They asked not to be filmed.
22:01Right.
22:01But they came out safely.
22:04But again, you know, for a truck to reach that far, you could see it knocked down a lot of banana trees.
22:10And when we get to the front of the vehicle, you would see that really it is a coconut tree that eventually stopped.
22:19Stopped the vehicle.
22:19And I think saved their lives because they would have continued onwards.
22:24What is it tearing like there?
22:26It's a bit downhill, but it's a lot of drop and hill and hollow there.
22:30And I don't know how that truck survived staying upright.
22:36And they came out safely without a scratch.
22:39But I went in just to make sure that they came out without injuries or else we would have had to attend to them.
22:47So it's a pretty, pretty busy week for us.
22:50And we continue.
22:52We should be out in the field tomorrow and Wednesday as well.
22:56On another case, I'll talk about later.
22:58Right.
22:58Well, thank God those gentlemen are safe.
23:01And we are hopeful that the search for Mr. C. Persaud, was it?
23:05Yes, C. Persaud.
23:06We are hopeful that that will be effort soon.
23:08Yeah, we are working with the family and informants and the police.
23:14So they are on top of it as well.
23:16And they are working together with us because I think they want to see, they want to find them.
23:22Yes.
23:23All right, so we are going to take a short break.
23:25And after this, we will have much more and we will take your calls.

25:56Welcome to Beyond Tape.
26:02Welcome back, I should say.
26:03I'm your host, Mark Wissand.
26:05And today with me, of course, is Captain Valence Rambert of the Hunter's Search and Rescue Team.
26:10And he's going to walk us through some of the missing persons for the month of May.
26:14And what, I guess, developments we've had.
26:17Well, yes, Mark.
26:19You remember April, we had 40-plus missing persons.
26:22And May seems to be keeping up with that, which is not a good trend.
26:25However, we've been able to recover a lot of those persons who have been missing in May so far.
26:32So as to date, we've had 23 reports of missing persons for the month of May 2025.
26:40And we have seven outstanding.
26:45And we're trying our best to locate these seven.
26:49Mark, you would know the skis, Thomas Vasquez, Amcha Giza Vasquez.
26:56I'm from Antigua, yes.
26:56From Antigua.
26:58And there was a bit of tit-for-tat between the Foreign Affairs Minister and Prime Minister Brown in Antigua.
27:06And today, Prime Minister Brown sort of retracted his statement because he was really commenting on another newspaper, not the Express Editorial.
27:16And not the comments of Minister Sean Sobas.
27:21Sobas, yes.
27:22But, I mean, aside, that aside, I mean, there's the ongoing search for Thomas.
27:28And to date, he has not been found.
27:30And every day, this is engaging the attention of the media and his mother, Candy Jagessa.
27:36She's in touch with me each day, trying to follow the developments, even asking if we would go to Antigua.
27:44So, I don't know if I could make a public plea because we first get to Antigua to carry four persons at a substantial cost.
27:53Yes.
27:53So, if there are people out there who are willing to assist us, no problem.
27:57And then we have Alia Ali.
27:59Two of those persons we had last week, Alia Ali and Emily Williams.
28:04Emily Williams was located, and we still have outstanding Alia Ali.
28:09She was last seen in the Morva area, and she's under the jurisdiction of the Children's Authority.
28:16Esther Motilal, we're still trying to gather information, but from what we've heard thus far, she is safe.
28:24And we're trying to find out the circumstances, and we should resolve this case soon.
28:29So, Nikita Timothy is missing from the Sandy Grandy District, and our teammates up there, they're working hard to locate us, and we're sure they will be able to locate us soon.
28:42Shannon Baburam, he was posted by the police service, and we have to get further information on him and his circumstances,
28:52why he went missing, and so we're working on that case.
28:57Do you have any information in terms of where he was last seen?
29:00No, we don't have any information.
29:03Did he leave him driving, walking?
29:05Walking.
29:06Walking.
29:06So, we have our teammates there trying to work with the family to find out really what happened to Shannon,
29:13and the Gasparo police as well.
29:15But the two cases we focus on from yesterday, Saturday was Mahindranath, again Mahindranath Sipasad,
29:25we highlighted him earlier, and he went missing from Tapana Road in Valencia, a famous quarry road in the Valencia district.
29:36He was staying at a home there on a quarry, his own house, he lived alone with five dogs,
29:42and then suddenly nobody could account for him.
29:45But, as I said, we have the full cooperation of the police, and we're working with them to try to find out what happened to Mahindran Sipasad.
29:55Now, just to say, you said that he lives in an area where there is quarrying, yes?
29:58Yeah.
29:59You know, there's all this contention, of course, with these quarrying, illegal quarrying, I should say,
30:05where persons are pushed off their land and so on.
30:08Yeah, but it's not a case of this. He was actually, we're not sure if the site is legal or not.
30:13Right.
30:14But he had built a house, he was working for a quarry owner for a while,
30:18and they had a dispute arose in February of 2025, and he was asked to leave the property.
30:24He didn't, and suddenly he has gone missing.
30:28So, I think the police is on top of the information.
30:31We're working with them, and, you know, hopefully we could find out what eventually happened to Mahindran Sipasad.
30:39That case and this other case came up yesterday.
30:44Yugnan Ramjian, there's no reason for him to be missing.
30:47He's 54. He's from Salt Mine, Trace, Faisalabad.
30:50His relatives live all around him.
30:54We understand that he was liming on the 3rd of May, and then they've not seen him since.
31:04So, we should be in that area, maybe tomorrow, to continue.
31:09So, he left home when he went out to hang out with people, or was it a situation?
31:14Nobody saw him, left home. They saw him liming on the 3rd by a relative's home, having some drinks.
31:20Right.
31:20On the evening of the 3rd, the night of the 3rd, and then nobody could account for him after that.
31:27And, so, we believe we'll be there tomorrow when I get to.
31:32When we leave here, we'll sort out whether we'll be down in Salt Mine, Trace.
31:35But, he had no money on him, and there was no reason for him to leave his home, or the area in which his relatives live.
31:46And, so, there is some concern as to why Yugnan and Pabu Ramjian is missing.
31:53And, it's quite some time that has gone away.
31:56We only got a report yesterday.
31:58So, those two, Mahindra and Yugnan, those are our focus for this week.
32:03And, then we have, I believe, we have one missing person again.
32:07Ricardo.
32:08Ricardo Asta Hartley.
32:10Now, he has been homeless on the streets of Arima for a while, but his daughter called me today, and she said she believed he was hospitalized.
32:19But, when we ran the check through the hospital system, we were not able to pick up anything.
32:26So, we'll have to probably scour the streets to see if we can locate him.
32:32Well, it's been a while, January 2024 was the last time she saw him.
32:37She has been checking the mugs, and, Mark, there's a recommendation I think we have to make,
32:44in that when John Doe's come in to the mortaries, I think I want to make the recommendation that they be photographed.
32:52Because, when you get there, they're being told that the bodies are disposed of, within seven days, if on claim,
33:00and there are no photographs for relatives to check.
33:03And, that's proven to be a problem, and so I want to make the recommendation to the health, Ministry of Health,
33:12that these John Doe's be photographed, so that these families, who are searching for their loved ones, could go in and they could view the pictures.
33:20Well, you know, that will also depend on the state of the body.
33:23Well, yes.
33:24Because, if it's going in a state of decomposition, where he cannot recognize anything, it will be difficult to photograph.
33:31Yeah.
33:32But, if it's fairly recent, then there might be a better chance.
33:35Those bodies that have basically fresh-ticked photographed them, it will go a long way,
33:39because, Mark, I mean, since I've been in the program, I've been, we've been reporting missing persons,
33:45approximately 90 per year not found, and relatives really want to know what eventually happened to them.
33:54Well, incidentally, you talk about that.
33:56I know, I read, I remember, I remember reading something a couple weeks ago, or months ago,
34:02references a number of unclaimed bodies, I think, in the, one of the hospitals along the east-west corridor,
34:09I wasn't calling him, and there was contention as to why these bodies are unclaimed for various reasons,
34:16people who are ill, people who came in there, fell ill, and I guess sometimes homeless and so on.
34:22So, maybe a right, a step in the right direction, obviously, would obviously, you know, as you said,
34:28having proper photographs of some of these individuals want to just, they can be recognized.
34:35Yeah.
34:36And then when persons coming to an institution, then they can obviously ask various questions,
34:43and they'll be shown sitting photographs that they can easily, because I remember doing a story last year
34:49about a person that looked strikingly the same as somebody that they thought had passed.
34:55I remember that story.
34:56And it was so bizarre, like, the body was a bit decomposed, but they had sitting,
35:04defining marks that the individuals or the relatives of the person, based on the structure and everything
35:11of the person, the physical anatomy and so on, said, well, wow, this is him.
35:17Tattoos, et cetera, and so on.
35:19I remember that story.
35:20And I think now they're pushing to have DNA, and they're not really going, they're being more careful
35:27in terms of relatives identifying these bodies.
35:32So, and they rely on more Malini-Pasad whose body we recovered a couple of weeks ago.
35:38Yes.
35:39A couple of weeks ago.
35:40So, DNA testing.
35:41Yeah.
35:42So, that's it as it stands for me, and we'll be pushing on this week to do some additional researches.
35:52All right.
35:53Great.
35:54All right.

38:18Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Bussan.
38:33Today we have with us Captain Valence Ramarat of the Hunters Search and Rescue Team.
38:39And certainly a lot was happening on the weekend.
38:41Some as well. Not only bad, but good as well.
38:44And we had the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Sports Day at the St. James Barracks.
38:52You know, several divisions and units competing here in March Pass.
38:57It was well attended.
38:59We have, of course, in attendance the Honorable Minister of Homeland, Roger Alexander,
39:05and then Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr. Junior Benjamin, looking on at the March Pass there,
39:13having some fun, enjoying.
39:16There was quite a lot of people at that event.
39:20Parking was problematic all around that area there.
39:25People parking along the pavements at the Forensic Science Center.
39:29I mean, there was certainly not enough parking in the barracks area to accommodate everyone.
39:36But it was certainly good to see, you know, former colleague of the TTPS there,
39:42now Honorable Minister, gracing them with his presence, of course,
39:46and then Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr. Junior Benjamin.
39:51Yeah, Mark, since the formation of Hunter, Switch and Rescue Team,
39:54we've been invited to the sports, and we've never been able to make it.
39:59But let me congratulate the GB for outstanding March Pass performance.
40:06I looked at it several times.
40:09I think they were the defending champions three times over,
40:12and it was a series of...
40:16So you won?
40:17So they won?
40:18Huh?
40:18They won again?
40:19Yeah, they won again.
40:20Okay.
40:20So it's a series of manoeuvres that was well executed,
40:24and it was nice to see again Minister of Homeland Security,
40:28Roger Alexander, and of course then Acting Commissioner of Police present.
40:33But we've been invited.
40:34I know ASP Ram Dass, the head of the anti-kidnapping union,
40:41speaking, discussing the Mahindrakes with me in the morning,
40:45and then said he was off to the sports.
40:48So we've been invited, but each time we have a search on,
40:52and that takes priority.
40:54But I like to see when the police officers get together
40:57and have a nice family and day of fun.
41:00Yeah, I'm sure there was a lot of, you know, competition healthy.
41:04Helped the competition and there's a lot of history wrapped into that event
41:09based on what the police officers have told me.
41:13There's the 108th anniversary of the TTPS sports,
41:17and we want to congratulate all the winners,
41:20and winners were, of course, from the March pass to, you know,
41:24various races that they would have had on that huge day
41:28that started at 9 a.m. and concluded sometime after 5 o'clock.
41:32And, of course, the festivities did not end there
41:35because there was also a little after.
41:38Yeah, and they will have everything in it, rhythm section,
41:41they will have good food, good refreshments and so forth.
41:46And I like that.
41:46I like to see when people come together and have fun,
41:49especially, you know, when you work hard.
41:51So, you know, it's not only about working hard,
41:54but you play hard as well.
41:55Yes, certainly.
41:57All right.
41:59So, we want to take you to a video along the priority bus route.
42:02We were talking about that area being, you know, several accidents,
42:07and we were seeing a maxi taxi proceeding along the priority bus route.
42:10And then suddenly there is a pedestrian trying to cross the road
42:17and he still attempts to cross the road
42:21and was struck by the maxi taxi,
42:25obviously taking a chance on the green light.
42:28If you look here, you'll see the light is green.
42:30And I'm waiting for the police to make the judgment.
42:36But the dotted lines we're seeing there is not a pedestrian crossing.
42:42Right.
42:42And I think we have to take that into consideration
42:45and so that who has the right of way there?
42:50Well, of course, consideration being, you know,
42:52you also have to look at the light and so on
42:54because there's an intersection there
42:56and you can't course against traffic.
42:59No, you can't.
42:59So, unfortunately, you know, he was struck by the maxi taxi.
43:05I think looking at the video, he really took it for granted
43:08that he had the right of way
43:10and he really didn't exercise proper road crossing safety procedures.
43:17Well, I'm certainly hopeful that he will recover.
43:23Yes.
43:23And it's a lesson to those crossing along the priority bus route
43:27and a lesson to maxi taxi drivers alike to be alert, of course.
43:34Currently, his head is thin in the other direction
43:36and you have an uncommon vehicle.
43:38Right.
43:39So that vehicle struck him.
43:40But I would imagine, based on the traveling of the maxi taxi,
43:45that continues after he might have been struck by the mirror,
43:51that huge mirror and the side mirror, which was protruding outward
43:56because he wasn't struck in the front of the maxi taxi,
44:01which would have even been more serious.
44:04So it could be that the maxi taxi was taking evasive action trying to move away from him,
44:10recognizing that he was in the process of crossing the road.
44:15Yeah, and so as I said, you have to be observant when you're crossing the streets,
44:20whether it be along the priority bus route or any other main road.
44:25And, of course, you know, we also tell people, you know,
44:27use the walkovers that they provide for you on the highways
44:30because a lot of them are still taking that shortcut to run across the highway
44:35with high-velocity people speeding along the highway and so on.
44:40Yeah, you see a lot of craziness on the highways and byways.
44:45Mark, just on a way up, I forgot to mention it in the opening,
44:49that in the area of the gas perron, northbound,
44:53there was a truck that overturned in the median
44:56and that was causing a substantial amount of traffic to those heading south.
45:01So to those of you who were expecting your loved ones earlier,
45:05there was a huge traffic pileup from Gasparo backing up into Chaguanas.
45:12I forgot to mention it earlier and, again, comes back to safety on our nation roads,
45:18speeding and practice your, be safe at all times.
45:24We also have another accident to show you.
45:27It was caught just before the PR co-lights as well here.
45:31Over the weekend, you know, and obviously the vehicle is overturned there.
45:38The police is on the scene as well.
45:42I'm not searching as to how many occupants were in the vehicle,
45:47but it's near another lesson here in road safety, in speed.
45:52Police was on the scene.
45:55I really hope for that the persons that were in this vehicle not hurt badly
46:03and, of course, would have been taken to the hospital for treatment.
46:06Yes, we wish that person or persons injured in that accident, speedy recovery.
46:12But, Mark, if only to look at social media today,
46:16you're seeing a lot of arachis, road traffic accidents on our nation's roads,
46:22crashes and so forth.
46:26So, really and truly, you know, there's this thing about the demerit points
46:33and the intention to scrap it.
46:36But there must be some level of, you know, supervision
46:41and some bitter penalty with respect to breaches in terms of the driving codes
46:50and the safety, you know, the safety aspect
46:55when thousands of vehicles are on the roads.
46:59Yes, certainly, and I know that I think Sean Willfield from the arrival live
47:06at Spokane last week in a newspaper article
47:09indicating that there has been at least a 50% decrease in road fatalities
47:15over the last few years or months, and cumulatively looking at it.
47:20But, of course, you know, that concern of the demerit points
47:24remains something that, you know, we've got to look at and gauge
47:28and we don't know if they will possibly put something else in place.
47:31Or make some amendments to it.
47:33Yes, or amendments, step up penalties for certain, you know,
47:38infringements on the nation's roadways.
47:42All right, we're going to take a short break,
47:44and when we get back, we'll have more.

49:06Mondays at 8.30pm on TV6.
49:09Brought to you by the Bankers Association of Trinidad and Tobago.
49:19Welcome back to Beyond the TV6.
49:24I'm your host, Mark Bussan.
49:25Joined today by Captain Valence Rambarat of the Hunter's Search and Rescue Team.
49:29I know you have a couple of housekeeping items.
49:32Before we go, you'd like to share with us?
49:34Well, one, Mark, the uncommon rainy season
49:37is one item that I would like to focus on.
49:40And we're going through a bit of...
49:43We have heated these days,
49:45but very soon, in a few days,
49:48we'll see the onset of the rainy season.
49:50June 1st.
49:51And then we have to be careful.
49:54We have to make plans.
49:55We have to prepare in case of storms or hurricanes.
49:59And already we've been invited
50:02to a couple of these communities
50:07where flooding is prevalent.
50:09And the second thing I wanted to mention really
50:12is that now that school is back out
50:15and you have the SCA students
50:18waiting on examination results
50:22and an opportunity arises for them to do different things.
50:26I just want to let those out there know
50:29that we are available to visit schools
50:31to share with these students the type of work we do
50:35as well as to do some safety programs with them.
50:39On Wednesday, we are at the St. Mary's Home for Children
50:43where we will interact with 127 kids
50:48to teach them various things about safety
50:52and to take them through some of the maneuvers we use
50:56by the audience, which is, you know,
50:58Mark, very interesting to see the little ones
51:01play with the radios, the walkie-talkies,
51:04and then they do all sorts of things
51:06with our soft but strong ropes
51:08and teach them how to handle it.
51:10And a lot of other stuff,
51:12we simulate rescue missions with them.
51:15We teach them how to attend to injuries
51:18and to transport the injured using lightweight stretchers.
51:25And so we have a whole slew of activities
51:29tailor-made for children and these type of activities
51:33because you know what?
51:35We said we are an organization.
51:36We just don't want to respond.
51:38We have to be proactive in some way
51:41to teach people a lot about safety
51:44and how some accidents and incidents
51:47could be prevented if you practice your safety skills.
51:52Yes, that's a pretty good, you know,
51:55something that's lacking, I guess,
51:56in the nation's schools,
51:59you know, those basic survival skills, I guess.
52:02Yeah.
52:02It's important, you know,
52:03even if you go out on a little trip
52:05and something might happen
52:06and do it, you know how to incorporate it.
52:09Yeah, and I think teaching of the teaching
52:12should start as early as possible.
52:14We didn't have this when we went to school
52:16and so we're glad to share it
52:17with the children in our nation's schools.
52:21And also, one of the other things we do,
52:24we got a request this week
52:26to accompany hikers on a trip
52:28just to make sure that they're safe
52:30and they do the thing.
52:31The other thing we do is that
52:33we ask you if you're hiking
52:34with a group,
52:35we cannot, we cannot,
52:37our team cannot be with you.
52:39Please send your location.
52:41And so we've done it in the past
52:42where people who are on hiking trees
52:44send the location
52:45so we're able to plot your location
52:48to ensure that you're not lost.
52:51Well, it makes sense,
52:53especially in rainy season
52:55when, you know,
52:56you're warned, obviously,
52:58not to go certain places to hike
52:59where there are rivers and so on
53:01because, you know,
53:02we've had instances
53:03in that area where we were
53:04in Saturday,
53:06Valencia River.
53:07That is known for that.
53:08You could be bathing
53:09and the water is a few inches
53:10and then suddenly,
53:11the rain comes and
53:12you're in progress.
53:15All right, we're out of time.
53:16Of course,
53:17repeat tonight at 11.30.
53:20We run tomorrow at 11 o'clock.
53:23The TV60s is up next.
53:25Stay with us
53:25and we'll see you back here at 6 tomorrow.
53:27We'll see you back here at 6 tomorrow.
