06:15the first of January 2025 to the 14th of March 2025, we have 48 reports
06:21with these smishing online practices in sums totaling close to just $5 million.

06:36were lost by prospective customers of different financial institutions.

06:47If you can explain exactly how does smishing work?
06:51Now, smishing basically is a fraudulent practice where a text is sent

06:59purporting to be from a legitimate agency or business,
07:04but the objective of it is to capture your information.
07:08Now, it rhymes with the word phishing.
07:12They are similar, but there's a difference between the both.
07:17The smishing is where a text or SMS is sent to your phone
07:22as opposed to the phishing where email would have been sent,
07:27but basically the objective is to capture information such as your password
07:32or your credit card number, and the ultimate goal is to trick persons
07:38to click on the link that will have been sent via that SMS,
07:42and as long as that click is made,
07:45persons will discover soon after that they would have lost the monies in their account.
07:50How does a victim or somebody that has sent that message
07:56able to spot what might be wrong with that text message?
08:02Any tips or pointers you can give to the persons?
08:07Sure, but before I go into the tips,
08:09I just want to give a little idea of how that smishing operates, right?
08:14So, the goal of that smishing attack basically is to get you to click,
08:20and once you click on that link, you'll be taken to a phishing site,
08:25and once you go on that phishing site,
08:28the objective there, you have a couple of objectives.
08:31You will be asked to download an app,
08:34and that app, they will ask you to install it on your device.
08:40Now, there's a software in that app that is specifically designed to disrupt,
08:47damage, and capture your information on your computer, right?
08:52Also, that smishing induces you to give up your information,
08:59such as your password or your banking information.
09:03So, the fraudsters, what they do with the perpetrators,
09:05they will send you that SMS,
09:09and the thing you will notice is that it will appear to come from
09:13a legitimate or a local phone number,
09:17and these messages usually create a sense of urgency,
09:21so they will tell you that somebody has hacked into your account
09:25or that somebody is making a fraudulent purchase,
09:30and you have to take certain action,
09:32and they will urge you to click on that link, right?
09:35And once you click on that link, as I said before,
09:39not too long after, you'll realize when you check your account again,
09:42your money, your hard-earned money, has been taken.
09:46So, the advice of the white-collar section and the fraud squad,
09:52do not click on that link, because once you click on that link,
09:57you are giving the fraudsters, the perpetrators,
10:00access permission to your account,
10:03and once they have that control, your money is as good as gone.
10:09And I would also want to add,
10:12if you were to receive such a text message,
10:17or if, God forbid, that you went ahead and clicked on the link,
10:22you are to contact your bankers immediately.
10:26The bankers usually provide an emergency contact number,
10:29and let them know what has happened,
10:31so that they can take the respective and relevant actions.
10:35All right, pretty interesting stuff, Thay,
10:38and we'll continue our discussion a little later on.
10:41It's day 82 of the state of emergency,
10:44and we just quickly want to take a look at our figures.
11:14512 dangerous drugs seized thus far,
11:17438,740 grams of cannabis,
11:213184 grams of cocaine,
11:2480 grams of ecstasy, 8 grams of Xanax,
11:27and 6.59 grams of molly,
11:30and 5 grams of crystal meth.
11:33So, the police is continuing their ongoing exercises
11:36across Trinidad and Tobago,
11:38as we try to rid the country of illicit firearms, drugs,
11:42and those that are intent on disrupting this society.
11:46Definitely, because we have recognized and realized
11:49that there's a proliferation of illegal firearms,
11:53and gangs, and guns,
11:55and these things are driving the violent crimes
12:00in Trinidad and Tobago,
12:02and also the fear of crimes,
12:05to the point that persons are not living their lives normally.
12:10They are making drastic changes
12:12because of the crimes in the different areas.

12:17All right, we're going to take a look now at our headlines.
12:39So, those were the headlines within the last 24 hours.
13:04We want to take you to our first video at Santa Cruz Old Road.
13:08Earlier today, let's take a look.
13:15So, apparently, an individual was shot and killed
13:21along the Santa Cruz Old Road today.
13:28That would have pushed the country's murder count to something like 86, I believe.
13:36Unfortunate, of course, Inspector Francis,
13:39that another life has been lost.
13:42Definitely, and our condolences go out to the family of that deceased person.
13:48It is never a comfortable situation
13:52when your loved one loses their life like that.
13:55It just goes to show that the illegal firearms,
13:59the choice of weapon for these type of offenses
14:05continue to ravish our nation.
14:08Yes, and earlier this morning as well,
14:10we had another unfortunate homicide in the enterprise,
14:15sorry, in the Chagonas area.
14:17Apparently, the person was killed
14:21and they tried to stuff him down a drain on the side of the road there.
14:26And you see homicide officers trying to retrieve the body
14:31that was stuck down in that drain there partially.
14:34They're getting a hold of the victim's feet
14:38and later their hands, you can see there.
14:41We're not certain how the victim was killed.
14:46I don't know if they were stabbed or shot
14:48and then the body was thrown into that drain.
14:51Clearly, a very calculated act to try and hide the body after the incident.
14:56Definitely, and again in this instance,
15:00condolences to the bereaved family.
15:02And this is where we, the police, depend upon people in society,
15:07the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
15:10The familiar slogan, if you see something, say something,
15:13because it is only when we get information from members of the public
15:18that we can solve these heinous crimes.
15:21Yes, and quickly, in High Street, San Fernando today,
15:24apparently there was an attempted robbery,
15:29an assailant apparently robbed somebody near the High Street area.
15:34And within minutes, police officers got to the area
15:38just on the outskirts of High Street there
15:42where they tried to apprehend the suspect.
15:45As you would have seen, police are in action there
15:48and trying to apprehend the suspect in this particular crime.
15:54Yes, and hats off to the police officers who were vigilant
15:59and would have received information and would have acted on the information.
16:03And I propose that they would have gotten the information from somebody.
16:08So we just want to encourage persons to keep giving information to the police officers
16:13so that we could bring about a successful end of this crime situation.

19:30In the last three months.
19:32Lost by these fraudsters.
19:35Or victims.
19:36Sorry.
19:37By fraudsters.
19:38And I know you also spoke about.
19:41Other investment opportunities.
19:44That are also tantamount.
19:47To being where these fraudsters work.
19:51Yes.
19:52Now investment fraud is just.
19:54Another category of fraud.
19:57Now remember we said that.
19:58Fraud is a.
20:00Intentional.
20:02Deception or misrepresentation.
20:04Yes.

20:56Type of fraud is that.
20:58The false promises.

21:01Right so the scammers.
21:02Entice potential victims.
21:05With the lure of quick returns.
21:08In a very in very little time.
21:11And sometimes you know it seems too good to be true.
21:16And I remember that there was an old saying that usually if something is.
21:19Too good to be true it usually is.
21:22But nevertheless.
21:24The advertisement makes the promises that.
21:26Once you make this investment.
21:28You will get a high return.
21:30And they create a sense of urgency.
21:32So they will tell you that.
21:33For example.
21:34If you.
21:36Invest $2,000.00.
21:38Within the next 24 hours.
21:40You will get a return of 20 to $30,000.00.
21:43And person.
21:45Fall trap to that sort of advertisement.
21:48And when they invest the money.
21:49Waiting for their return.
21:51They.
21:53They don't get anything at all.
21:55Now mind you.
21:57Next.
21:58Three months.
21:59That same advertisement.
22:00Will be running.
22:02Make an advert.
22:03Make a deposit.
22:04An investment of $2,000.00.
22:06And you'll get a high return.
22:08So that is one of the ways.
22:09Persons.
22:11Are trapped with these false.
22:13Promises.
22:15Now another aspect of this investment fraud.
22:17It is.
22:18Deceptive.
22:19Very deceptive.
22:20In nature.
22:21Because they use deceptive tactics.
22:23From the onset.
22:24From the onset.
22:26They also use pressure tactics.
22:28In terms of.
22:30Trying to urge you.
22:31To part with your money.
22:33Because this investment.
22:35Is only for a limited time.
22:37Or for a certain time.
22:39And because persons have a.
22:41Ongoing need.
22:42They will fall prey.
22:44To these investments.
22:46Or these fake endorsements.
22:48Involving a lot of smart man thing.
22:49Yes.
22:50As you say in the old days.
22:52That's a term.
22:53That's correct.

23:36And what kind of money are you talking about.
23:38That persons have tied up.
23:40Or have lost in that period of time.
23:42If you can.
23:44Well.
23:46The information I have with me.
23:48Right now.
23:50Is that during the period.
23:52The first of January 2025.
23:54To the 14th of March 2025.
23:56We have.
23:58Eight reports recorded.
24:00Being made.
24:02In relation to the investment fraud.

24:26They gain their trust.

24:32To get their return.
24:34They don't make a report.
24:36Or they are just holding out on hope.
24:38Waiting.
24:40Hoping that they will get their return.
24:42Because part of the scheme.
24:44Of the investment fraud is that.
24:46You have.
24:48Fake advertisement.
24:50From persons who would have.
24:52Reaped the rewards of this investment.
24:54So they are saying that.
24:56I will wait my turn.
24:58So I will get my reward also.
25:00So truth be told.
25:02There could be more victims out there.
25:04It's just that they have not come forward.
25:06To make any report as yet.
25:08Inspector Francis have you seen.
25:10And I have heard a couple of people say.
25:12That they actually have people.
25:14That are also working with them.
25:16That pretend to be customers.
25:18Or pretend to be part of this investment.
25:20That say hey I got through.
25:22You know don't worry.
25:24Look I get $30,000.
25:26But I understand those people.
25:28Are also part and parcel of the scheme.
25:30Of making enticing persons.
25:32To invest their money.
25:34Well we haven't gotten that information.
25:36Right.
25:38But let me put it this way.
25:40We will not be surprised.
25:42If that is the case.
25:44Because this investment fraud.
25:46Involves a wide group of people.
25:48Each have a different role to play.
25:50And in order to convince.
25:52Lots of persons.
25:54You will have these persons.
25:56Who are saying that.
25:58I have been successful.

26:02So what are you waiting on.

26:50Technologically savvy.
26:52In how they entice persons.
26:54To send money.
26:56Definitely.
26:58And it is now up to us.
27:00And the members of the public.
27:02And we are encouraging.

27:08Because the world has.
27:10Advancing in this area of technology.
27:12To ensure that we.
27:14Arm ourselves.

53:24of the Fraud Squad of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
53:26And of course,
53:28just in wrapping up,
53:30we just have just under five minutes to go.
53:32We wanted to ask Inspector Francis
53:34in general
53:36some of the things that persons should do
53:38to safeguard themselves
53:40and their money, of course,
53:42from these fraudsters
53:44online,
53:46at the bank machines,
53:48using your credit cards, etc.
53:50And my producer was asking
53:52if you have the answer.
53:54Has there been any
53:56fraudulent activity
53:58detected via online trading
54:00that you all have seen?
54:02In relation to the
54:04latter question, I will have to
54:06verify that.
54:08And I'll get back to you
54:10with a bit of information.
54:12No problem.
54:14What I would like to do to advise
54:16the members of the public,
54:18as we know,
54:20we are now in a digital age.
54:22And
54:24because of that,
54:26the perpetrators
54:28have adjusted
54:30their method of crime.
54:32So what
54:34we would ask you to do
54:36is that, first of all,
54:38if you see any suspicious text
54:40or email coming on your phone
54:42or on your computer,
54:44do not click any link
54:46that people will be suggesting that you click.
54:48Also, in terms
54:50of the ATM machines,
54:52do not give
54:54your password to any strangers,
54:56persons pretending
54:58they want to assist.
55:00And only give your
55:02password to somebody
55:04who you trust. And as
55:06persons who carry these
55:08and operate these bank cards
55:10and credit cards,
55:12I would encourage us to
55:14educate ourselves in relation to what is
55:16happening. We are not
55:18separate from what is happening in the world.
55:20Let us educate ourselves
55:22so that we would make ourselves
55:24a hard target.
55:26I also want to encourage persons in
55:28any case of emergency
55:30to reach out to the emergency
55:32numbers. We have 911.
55:34We have 999.
55:36800-TIPS, which is
55:38800-8477.
55:40And we encourage
55:42persons, please, if you
55:44see any suspicious activity
55:46or any crime, if you see something,
55:48please say something.
55:52We just have about three minutes
55:54or thereabouts, and I
55:56know that this is big in the United States
55:58of America, identity theft.
56:00Have we seen any
56:02type of activity, fraudulent activity,
56:04in that we met here in Trinidad and Tobago
56:06over the last couple of years?
56:08That is one aspect of
56:10fraud. We have
56:12not seen that.
56:14I will need to
56:16get some information from my
56:18registry department.
56:20In terms of identity fraud,
56:22what we have seen
56:24in relation to,
56:26which is another thing
56:28we will discuss on
56:30another program probably.
56:32In terms of real
56:34property fraud, where persons
56:36purchase
56:38property fraudulently, where there
56:40are fraudulent deeds, there have been
56:42instances where
56:44fraudulent identification
56:46cards and
56:48driver's permit were used.
56:50If that
56:52falls within the realm of the identity
56:54theft,
56:56I will just need some further clarification
56:58on that.
57:00That is a very interesting question.
57:02The fraudsters
57:04are looking for any and every
57:06means now to
57:08carry out the trade.
57:10It is up for us as the police
57:12officers, the fraud squad,
57:14the TTPS on hold
57:16in collaboration with the
57:18members of the public to ensure
57:20that they do not
57:22get success in
57:24what they want to do.
57:26There are a lot of facilitators
57:28that you talk about, that land
57:30thing.
57:32There are a lot of facilitators
57:34helping that process
57:36along. We know it happens
57:38in various offices across
57:40the country, and other persons are
57:42also helping and aiding and abetting
57:44as well.
57:46It is big business, so to speak.
57:48It is not limited to just one person
57:50helping to facilitate that,
57:52but a number of persons
57:54that help to facilitate such
57:56types of crimes.
57:58Obviously, because
58:00the perpetrators could only reach
58:02so far by themselves, but
58:04when they are getting assistance
58:06from persons within
58:08certain institutions
58:10and agencies,
58:12that is where the difficulty
58:14arises
58:16in terms of the
58:18offences themselves.
