03:26Joining us today is Acting ASP Russell of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
03:33First time for the year.
03:34Welcome sir and happy new year.
03:37Good evening to the members of the Trinidad and Tobago public.
03:40We are here.
03:41So it's been pretty busy, I guess, over the last couple of weeks with the police.
03:46We've been doing a lot of things.
03:47We've been doing a lot of things.
03:48We've been doing a lot of things.
03:49We've been doing a lot of things.
03:50We've been doing a lot of things.
03:51We've been doing a lot of things.
03:52We've been doing a lot of things.
03:53We've been doing a lot of things.
03:54We've been doing a lot of things.
03:55We've been doing a lot of things.
03:56We've been doing a lot of things.
03:57We've been doing a lot of things.
03:58We've been doing a lot of things.
03:59We've been doing a lot of things.
04:00We've been doing a lot of things.
04:01We've been doing a lot of things.
04:02So it's been pretty busy, I guess, over the last couple of weeks with the 18, I believe, of the state of emergency.
04:09How has it been, especially for the areas that you are overseeing and so on?
04:14Well, it has been pretty – how do I want to put it?
04:17The officers have been working hard.
04:21We must say kudos and commend the members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service,
04:25as well as all the other protective service agencies.
04:30What we were hearing on the ground from the members of the public, I don't know if you could testify to that also,
04:35is that persons are feeling a bit safer.
04:39When you look at the crime figures, every figure, murder, robbery, violent crime, every violent crime is done.
04:49And I want to thank the public for their information.
04:52I want to thank the officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service for their continued commitment.
04:58And we want to encourage that further support from the public.
05:02Most certainly. And I know you will probably have some very long days.
05:07What has our hours been like over the last three weeks?
05:10Well, let's say we have a lot of meetings, a lot of strategy meetings taking place with respect to operations and getting the right things done.
05:19You know, the police service, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, we believe in teamwork.
05:24It's not a one-man show.
05:27The executive will pass down their directions. We will now implement their directions.
05:33It's a constant flow of communication up and down and across through our chains of command.
05:39So we have some long days. Some days may be shorter than some.
05:42But one of the admirable things is that the level of commitment from the officers,
05:47because we are all asking extra from the officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
05:52Leave is restricted. We are asking for more. Some shifts have changed.
05:58Like, for instance, in the Western Division, we are now working 24-24 to have that strength to do a continuous roadblock,
06:05to do that continuous increase in presence, to do the continuous detaining of persons and accountability thereafter.
06:14Because, you know, we have to operate with certain guidelines under the SOE.
06:18So, I mean, the members of the police service and the entire Ministry of National Security has been working hard.
06:24But I want to say a special commendation to every member of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
06:29I want to commend those who took that initiative to even report off their vacation leave without even waiting for us to call them.
06:37Yeah, and certainly, you know, kudos to those officers who answered that call
06:42and came out to assist their fellow colleagues as we entered the 18th of the State of Emergency.
06:50And we're just going to look at some of the data since the State of Emergency started,
06:55and we'll let Acting ASP Russell take us through those numbers.
07:01Day 19, sorry.
07:02So, as we say, it's Day 19 of the SOE, and thus far, number of operations, 1,001.
07:10Priority offenders targeted, 979.
07:14Searches conducted, 5,932.
07:18Traffic operations, 806.
07:21Total persons arrested, 756 persons.
07:25Traffic offenses detected, 2,453.
07:30Firearms recovered, 41.
07:33Ammunition recovered, 1,115 rounds of assorted ammunition.
07:38Dangerous drugs seized, 129,479 grams of marijuana and 696.09 grams of cocaine.
07:49Certainly, as the time wears on, we see that a lot of things happening there
07:56as it relates to various operations being conducted by various units across the divisions of Trinidad and Tobago.
08:05And I can imagine it's very onerous at times, having to sift through intelligence, sift through information
08:14before you will pinpoint a specific location or area or person or persons.
08:22What I can say is, despite the challenges, we have to get the job done.
08:26And we are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done within the confines of the law.
08:33So we just want to encourage the public, the SOE really and truly is really targeted towards the gang members,
08:43the offenders, the persons that are responsible for the mayhem, the violent crime in this country.
08:49Once you are a law-abiding citizen going about your daily business,
08:54I assure you, you have nothing to worry about.
08:58And we want you to continue to partner with us.
09:00Sometimes we may not always get it right.
09:03And for times that we don't get it right, we do apologize.
09:06But we want the public to assist us. We want the public to cooperate with us.
09:10We want the public to bear with us, to pray for us.
09:13And just support us through this time. Trinidad and Tobago is ours.
09:17Yes. Yes, definitely.
09:20When you spoke about gun violence, I just jogged my memory about two days ago,
09:25incident of a young man being shot and killed, 18 years of age,
09:32Hill Besaw, if memory serves me right, shot and killed outside the Domino's Pizza,
09:38just not far away from the Forrest Police Station.
09:42What I can say about that, again, it was a result of gang-related violence.
09:48What was commendable in that situation,
09:52and it's really a clarion call to the parents and the guardians.
09:58I understand one of his relatives visited the scene and would have confirmed certain things
10:03with respect to the information that we had to his activities in that particular life
10:10that shed even more light because he was not known in that particular area.
10:15And on that note, I want to also encourage persons, landlords especially,
10:19and what you find is taking place, even hoteliers and people with business that provide shelters,
10:25A, B and B, temporary shelters, etc.
10:28Be mindful, be careful of the persons coming to your establishment at this time.
10:33Be alert, ask for a copy of their ID, verify their ID, take a contact number,
10:40ensure the contact number is valid and working for that person that you are housing
10:45because these people are now looking for places to hide.
10:49And we could see a migration of criminals.
10:52Some persons would go into areas that they are not known.
10:55They were moving under the cover of darkness just to get away, to hide,
11:00to change their movement a bit because that individual was not of that area.
11:04And we could even go back, as far back as the situation in Tobago
11:09with the young boy, 15 years.
11:11I understand he was buried recently during this week here.
11:16I saw the funeral arrangements on the funeral procession on the television.
11:20And you know, is he talking about 15?
11:24This is another child, 18.
11:27Haven't even started to live and we are asking the parents, come to us.
11:32We have, you know, the Trinidad and Tobago Police, we have a lot of initiatives
11:36that we would have set up. They have hearts and minds.
11:37We have counselors. We have social workers.
11:41For the children, we work closely with the children's authority.
11:47We engage the Child Protection Unit in a lot of these incidents as well.
11:51Please do not wait until the horse has left the stable
11:57and the child has gone down a particular road to try to get help.
12:02Let's monitor your children. Be that guardian. Be that parent.
12:05Exercise that responsibility that is required of you as a parent.
12:11It would save the child's life in the long run.
12:14That's why we made that call a couple of days ago on this show
12:18to parents who are facing that kind of challenge
12:21or those difficulties to reach out and share your story.
12:25And I'm sure one of the officers on this show would be able to assist you
12:29in some way as to get that child on the right path.
12:32As you also recall, the relative of that individual who died two days ago
12:37spoke about the fact that after he appeared on that YouTube video,
12:43he never saw him after that.
12:45And that's eight months after now living that his relative has passed.
12:52So it's really sad that it came to that at the end of the day.
12:57But we are hopeful that the parents out there
12:59that are listening will obviously heed the call to reach out to somebody
13:03and get that assistance.
13:05What I would like to ask to everybody in Trinidad and Tobago
13:09is if we could go back to the days when it took a village to raise a child.
13:13That would be so important because the little things that we ignore
13:18are the things that come back at us
13:23two, three, four, five years down the road.
13:25We really need to be our brother's keeper.
13:28More and more, even now, it calls for that.
13:32Because if we could talk to each other, we could resolve our differences.
13:36We have to start to look at ourselves in the mirror
13:39and be the example that we want to see.
13:42It's no longer do as I say but not as I do.
13:45We all need to exercise that example.
13:49All right.
13:51And on that note, we're going to take a look at our headlines.
13:53♪
14:14So those are some of the headlines within the last 24 hours.
14:19And of course, the first one referred to are
14:21The first one referred to a home invasion involving three assailants
14:27at a princess-owned house where the nephew
14:31of the elderly gentleman was able to fight back using a cutlass.
14:36And we just wanted to kind of take a look at a different angle
14:39of that actual home invasion.
14:44So you see one of the men armed with a firearm,
14:46pointing a firearm at the elderly gentleman.
14:49They quickly usher him into the gallery and then into the living room
14:56of that particular compound in Princess Town.
15:03And you would hear some commotion and the elderly man knew this is
15:08where they were taking him into the living room area and so on.
15:11And within a few seconds you would hear him crying out for help.
15:16And they closed the door and, of course,
15:22within a couple of seconds this happens.
15:38He was scampered out of there.
15:42Luckily his nephew, because he spoke with the media yesterday
15:45and he spoke about his calling, speaking rather loudly
15:49and they didn't think that there was anybody else living there.
15:52And his nephew was living downstairs, came out and assisted him.
15:56With a cutlass.
15:57And, you know, it's a commendable level of bravery.
16:02Indeed.
16:03But what if it did not go in their favor?
16:08Now, looking at it, I understand that the elderly gentleman was grazed
16:14by one of the bullets from the perpetrators.
16:17Yes.
16:18What if that bullet was a few inches in the wrong direction?
16:23Yeah. So, whereas it's a commendable level of bravery, you know,
16:26the first thing we would want to really encourage, you know,
16:31we don't want you to be brave but you lose your life at the end of it.
16:36These guys will definitely shoot you.
16:40Yes.
16:41Sometimes they are indeed more nervous than you are.
16:46So, the slightest jerk, flinch,
16:50discomfort that they feel could result in them shooting you.
16:55Certainly.
16:56So, this is a video we haven't seen pop up on social media
17:01for quite a while and we just wanted to take a look back at this.
17:07So, this involves apparently an incident with a teacher and a student
17:14at a school in South Trinidad either yesterday or the day before.
17:20It has been making the wrongs on social media
17:22and now more people are commenting.
17:24You see that the teacher is allegedly lying on the floor there,
17:28grappling with the student.
17:31But in the video that is being shared
17:35on social media apparently you see the teacher first somewhat
17:41of the aggressor in some way, allegedly.
17:45So, I mean, the debate rages on, teacher, student.
17:52Well, as an adult, you should,
17:54the teacher should actually lead by example.
17:58You know, this is somebody's child.
18:01Yes.
18:02What you should have done in my view is contact the dean,
18:08contact the police service.
18:10When you take matters into your own hands like that,
18:13what if after the investigation is done there was a mandate
18:18or a direction given to charge both of them for fighting?
18:23Then what?
18:24Yeah.
18:25You know, sometimes we think that, you know, a right,
18:29like for instance sometimes persons get into accidents
18:33and they're so upset they come out and they hit the other driver.
18:36You were right at a point in time but now you're wrong.
18:40Two wrongs definitely don't make a right.
18:42We are again, and that's what I'm calling on,
18:43we have to be the leaders, we have to be the example.
18:47That is a child.
18:48Yeah. But as I said, you know, allegedly because, you know,
18:52we see an excerpt from the video, we don't know what have transpired.
18:56Before that.
18:57To have provoked this attack or this confrontation.
19:01Definitely.
19:02So we don't want to draw any definitive conclusion
19:05until we hear the whole story.
19:07But that's why we also talk about the body cameras
19:09with the police officers.
19:10Because many times the cameras turned on from the members of the public
19:14is after something would have happened.
19:17Hardly ever anybody would be able to capture the first incident.
19:23They always capture the response most of the time.
19:26But I am certain that that matter has been investigated
19:29by the members of the Southern Division.
19:33And, you know, they will do what they have to do
19:35and you just will forward me.
19:37All right. On that note, we're going to take a short break
19:39and we'll be back. Stay with us.

21:16Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
21:17I'm your host, Mark Bassan,
21:19joined today by Acton ASP Russell
21:21of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
21:24And we're talking about the state of emergency.
21:26And of course, we have a video profiling operations
21:33during this SUV by the Southern Division a couple days ago.
21:37So we just wanted to take a look at that.
24:46All right, before we comment on that specific video,
24:50we're gonna take a caller.
24:51Caller, good evening.
24:52Hi, good evening, Mr. Bassan.
24:54Good evening.
24:55Also good evening to Officer Russell.
24:57Good evening to you, sir.
24:58Officer Russell, I must say I'm happy to see you on the show
25:01because I also watch your show
25:03called The Morning Brew very often.
25:05And I saw when you started on the show
25:08and I paid close attention to you.
25:09And even the officer before you,
25:11I paid close attention to what you all say as a citizen.
25:17Yesterday I called and I made a contribution.
25:20Mr. Officer Pitt was on the show.
25:22And the contribution I made was in an aim to restore
25:27that connection between police officers within communities,
25:30restore trust and confidence.
25:33And with the aim, the objective being to resolve crime
25:37in societies, communities, and the country.
25:40We could see how we have,
25:42if somebody is applying for a certificate of character,
25:45you go online, make an appointment,
25:47you come into the police station,
25:49same way somebody could apply,
25:51get an appointment and come into the police station
25:54and verify who they are in the community.
25:58So, like I was saying to Mr. Pitt,
26:01I'm assuming, I'm not an officer, I'm assuming,
26:05you would have a detailed geographical layout
26:08of the district that you're protected to.
26:10You would know each street in the community
26:13and with persons, with you inviting members to come in
26:16and verify themselves,
26:17you would know the persons on these streets,
26:20these persons go to school, these persons go to work,
26:22some persons may be self-employed.
26:24If in that case, in each and every case,
26:27you verify with the organization,
26:29they say that they would,
26:31so you have a profile and a character understanding
26:35of each person in the community.
26:36The feedback I got from Mr. Pitt,
26:40it was okay, he said,
26:42instead of that's what officers would be doing
26:44is walk around in the community
26:46to get familiarity of the atmosphere, et cetera.
26:49That sounds very nice, but I was thinking about it today.
26:52During the course of the day,
26:53most persons would be commuting to where they're going.
26:57So, we wouldn't really have the time
26:58to connect with the officers on that level.
27:02So, I think when you know where the aim to be,
27:04to be resolving and neutralizing crime,
27:08a lot more connectivity between officers
27:12and citizens is necessary.
27:15I usually hear the term that, you know,
27:17crime is dynamic and you can never stop crime.
27:20I would really like to hear
27:22a lot more preventative measures,
27:25like preventing crime from even occurring.
27:28Because one thought I have is,
27:29if any of us have like young ones that we care about, right?
27:33And we have matches in the kitchen or whatnot,
27:37you wouldn't just leave the matches laying around
27:39and with the aim being to reduce the amount of matches
27:43that the child plays with.
27:45You wouldn't want the child to play
27:46with any matches at all.
27:48So, that's just my contribution.
27:50Thanks for the time.
27:51And I'm listening right now for your feedback.
27:55Right, so I listened to you, Cora,
27:58and that is indeed a good idea.
28:02Because if the citizen is willing to come to us,
28:04we're always willing to accept the citizen's help.
28:07And it's even greater in the sense that
28:13you are actually residing there.
28:14So you are somewhat paying a constant surveillance
28:18as to what is going on in your environment.
28:20So you could probably give us more information
28:22than we may ever get by passing on a patrol
28:25or we may ever get by doing a walkabout.
28:27Now, we have like the station council
28:29where we encourage members of the community
28:32to come on board and to provide such information
28:35because we want to know who is the doctor
28:37in your neighborhood?
28:39Who is the fireman in your neighborhood?
28:41Who is the other police officer in your neighborhood?
28:43Because that officer could be our first point of contact.
28:46Something happened and medical experience is needed.
28:49We could tap on that doctor.
28:51Something happened and we require some legal assistance.
28:54They may have a lawyer living in your neighborhood.
28:56We also have the town meetings
28:58where we encourage persons to come out
28:59and share their information.
29:01Come out and, you know, we,
29:02but these things require trust,
29:06both from your end and the police.
29:09Why is the police are willing to work with you?
29:11You need to have to,
29:12you need to be able to exhibit that trust with each other,
29:16exercise that trust and know that what affects one neighbor
29:20would definitely affect the other, the walkabouts.
29:24And if it's one thing that I know that we really
29:27make a great effort of keeping the Western Division
29:30is the walkabouts.
29:32And we try to find the opportunity in time.
29:34So we wouldn't have the walkabouts in the daytime
29:36when most persons go on to work.
29:38However, it may be a community where it's mostly retirees.
29:42So at that point in time,
29:43daytime may be very efficient to have the walkabout,
29:47but we do canvass areas, speak to the persons.
29:51And that is good because we supposed to know, right,
29:54John living at number 10, Susan living at number 15,
29:58John driving a white car, Susan driving a green car.
30:01So once you pass through on your patrol,
30:03because this is what the officer is supposed to do,
30:06beat and patrol.
30:06You need to know as the same Sesame Street,
30:09who are the persons in your neighborhood?
30:12We ought to know that.
30:13So from the time we see somebody strange,
30:15we supposed to be able to say, you know,
30:18to interview that person,
30:19whatever you're finding out, who are you?
30:22Why are you here?
30:23What is your purpose?
30:24So we welcome that.
30:25We would love for the members of the public
30:27to come and bring the information
30:28because it would help us.
30:29Because that person could be somebody hiding
30:32from another offense,
30:34somewhere that they would have committed another offense.
30:37And when I talk about what we could do preventative,
30:40also that he has in mind, we have the youth clubs
30:42where we want to encourage parents to bring your children
30:44to join in the youth clubs and stuff like that.
30:47You know, so we have things in place.
30:51We could always do better,
30:52but we do have some initiatives.
30:54All right, we're gonna take a short break
30:55and we'll be back.
30:56Stay with us.
30:58I'm gonna run, I'm gonna call it.
31:07Nothing like the sense of clean clothes,
31:09freshly dried in the sun and the breeze.
31:11You know, a long time in Tobago,
31:13we use the sun for everything,
31:14preserving fruits, drying seeds,
31:17bleaching clothes white,
31:18and don't talk about the dry fish.
31:20Granny, you're like an OG planet warrior, you know.
31:22Nowadays, the sun's energy is captured
31:24and stored into batteries to power so many things
31:27like torches, chargers, security lights,
31:29and so much more.
31:31And don't forget the solar heating.
31:32My good looks can't survive any cooler.
31:35Solar power to the people.

32:42You're such a...
32:49You're such a moron.
33:04Shhh...
33:06Shh.
33:10Shh.
33:22Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
33:23I'm your host Mark Basanti,
33:25joined today by actor ASP Russell
33:27of the Trinidad and Tobago police service.
33:29I do believe you have a caller on the line.
33:31Caller, good evening.
33:33Yes, good afternoon, Mr. Basant and the officer.
33:36Good evening, sir.
33:38Officer, welcome.
33:40Reality for 2025.
33:43Yeah.
33:44Now, this afternoon,
33:47yeah,
33:49you see, I look,
33:51I look at this program every day and it's very educational
33:55for each and every one.
33:57And what happens is that when I look at,
34:00when you take away corporal punishment from the school,
34:04it's not a brutalizing thing,
34:06corporal punishment from the school,
34:08straight across the board, you take away from the home.
34:11I have an experience sometime a few years ago,
34:15where I disciplined one of my daughters,
34:17who she was going to a wrong way secondary every time.
34:20For coming home late,
34:22I got to work at night, which, you know,
34:24three o'clock, I pass through sometimes four,
34:26and she's still outside here.
34:28So I disciplined her,
34:29and the following day, she went to the station,
34:31and said, well, I do so-and-so,
34:33and two officers came.
34:35One, he didn't come to investigate
34:38in the way he bring the message across to me.
34:42He said, um,
34:43good afternoon.
34:44Yeah, Mr. Roberts, I said, yes.
34:46He said, um,
34:48did your daughter bring a complaint to the station?
34:50And I said, because he said,
34:52I have a daughter of the same age of your child.
34:56I said, yes.
34:58But it's true that that is your child.
35:00This way, the child live under my roof.
35:03I'm the one who taking care of her,
35:05and she did something, and I gave her to, to melt.
35:08Is that wrong?
35:10She said, well, you know the law.
35:11I said, well, the law is that
35:14if I leave that child on her own,
35:16she will just disappear and go on.
35:19I said, look, the mother,
35:20when you spoke to the mother,
35:22they just leave and they go on.
35:24You see, we have to stand up for what is right.
35:27What is right, you're not brutalizing a child.
35:30As a territory called punishment,
35:33that's a problem.
35:34Parents going to school,
35:36wrangling with teachers.
35:38Children have no respect for teachers.
35:40Officers, each one of us is from the Bowersville society.
35:44When I was growing up,
35:45that village grew up a child.
35:47Now we don't have that,
35:48because parents will say,
35:49don't tell my child anything.
35:50So this is total breakdown.
35:52You all have a blessed evening.
35:57So I understand your situation at the point in time,
36:06but let me take it one step further.
36:09I understand you said you discipline your child
36:12and yes, you would have hit her,
36:14but that's a young lady.
36:19Three, four years later,
36:20she's in a relationship.
36:22Domestic violence.
36:24Suppose she starts to associate
36:27being physically assaulted with love.
36:32So we need to find innovative ways
36:34to discipline our children.
36:36It's not about hitting the children.
36:37I understand what you're saying
36:38about corporal punishment,
36:40being taken away from school,
36:42but what if we just show an extra concern?
36:44What if we just show our extra love,
36:46our extra care?
36:47Pop in on the school.
36:50Speak to the teacher,
36:51see what is going on.
36:52The cell phone, the mighty cell phone.
36:55We could ban them.
36:56Take away the cell phones.
36:58You could do things to restrict the children.
37:00You could do things to discipline the children
37:02without having to physically assault them
37:05because let's say you hit that child
37:07and it breaks in.
37:09You hit the child in the wrong place
37:11and the child falls down.
37:12You are before the court for an offense.
37:15Could be assault by beating.
37:18Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
37:21People have to be able to manage their rage,
37:24manage their anger.
37:25We cannot, we should not,
37:27and we cannot continue to use this physical.
37:30And I understand,
37:31I am a product of Eastern Coral Reel Avontale.
37:35I too gave some trouble
37:37and that is what my mother knew as well.
37:41Am I a better person for it?
37:43Yes.
37:44But my two daughters,
37:46I don't hit them.
37:49I don't encourage it.
37:52We need to be able to speak to children
37:53and find innovative ways as parents.
37:57When you hit,
37:57then you apprehend that level of violence
37:59because we might say discipline
38:00and yes, the Bible says,
38:01spare the world and spoil the child.
38:04But hitting somebody is actually an act of violence.
38:06And then we wonder why the society is this way.
38:10So we all have to think about what we are doing
38:14before we do it.
38:15Think about something that your children love
38:17and maybe they love playing football.
38:18So for two weeks, you have no football.
38:21Yeah.
38:22Okay, so you like to go to school with the Jordans.
38:23Okay, for two weeks,
38:25you go to school with something else.
38:26All right.
38:27We're gonna move to a feature
38:30of the Border Splitting Division
38:33conducting exercise during the state of emergency
38:35a few days ago.
38:36Boogity boopty, boogity, boogity, boogity boopty.
39:36Alright, so just walk us through quickly.
39:56Well, again, this is an operation in the Port of Spain area and, you know, again, we want
40:02to commend the officers.
40:03Look at the terrain that these officers will have to traverse to apprehend this person.
40:08We are doing our best to make Trinidad and Tobago as safe as possible.

43:13Welcome back to Beyond the Tape, I'm your host Marc Bessant, joined today by acting
43:23ESP Russell of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
43:26Just reminded the numbers to call 623-1711, extensions 1996 and 1997.
43:33Before we go to our next feature, we just wanted to go back to the Southwestern Division
43:37where there was a lot of, you know, sophisticated operation that I'm sure you would like to
43:42make a comment on.
43:43Well, again, this is the level of operations that persons are willing to undertake to get
43:49their finances.
43:50What you see there is a proper greenhouse, so you would have seen lights with ultraviolet
43:56rays to mimic the sunlight, proper ventilation, cooling, etc.
44:04You know, and these are the things that we want to tell the public, we want you to be
44:09cognizant because this could be going on in your neighborhood.
44:13This could be going on in your neighborhood.
44:16Members of the public, the law gives you four male plants, anything over that is cultivating
44:24and we could definitely see there that is cultivating.
44:27Look at the number of plants, look at the equipment that are being used, everything
44:32is being set up and we could just imagine what the light bill for that property looks
44:36like and these are key indicators to the relevant agencies as well.
44:41So partner with the police and share the information.
44:43Yeah, most definitely and as you say, you know, rather sophisticated and the hydroponics
44:49and so on.
44:50Okay, so we're going to take a look now at the, oh, my apologies, my producer said we
44:56have a call on the line.
44:57Caller, good evening.
44:58Hello, good afternoon.
44:59Good afternoon, ma'am.
45:00Good afternoon, ma'am.
45:01I just want to, the father just now that spoke about the corporal punishment.
45:07First to begin, everything is about the parents and the parents and the parents.
45:13Corporal punishment did not come from nobody in Trinidad.
45:17Corporal punishment came from the UN.
45:20They invent, they send that instruction to the schools.
45:26And we had to do that because of how some of the teachers were taking advantage of the
45:34children.
45:37Also how some parents beat their children and leave marks on their skin.
45:45If a father discipline a child and she goes to the station, a police is entitled to come
45:53and ask a question.
45:55I had a 14-year-old who got in trouble and they called the police.
45:59And when the police came, I asked the officer, I said, what would you rather?
46:05Would you rather shoot him and he fall in a drain because he followed bad company and
46:11then call me to identify his body?
46:14Or would you rather me discipline him so that you don't have that extra duty on your shoulder
46:21to do?
46:22Because you all have a lot of work to do, you know?
46:25Right?
46:26And if we will come down on the parents that are not allowing another parent to discipline
46:33the child, these are who you all need to deal with.
46:37Because we have a lot of young people making children.
46:40And when these young people make children, they are children themselves.
46:45So they're not properly well-educated, so they can't educate their children.
46:50And some of them, based on who they are, where they come from, they end up in the wrong place
47:00at the wrong time.
47:02That is my contribution for this afternoon.
47:05Thank you and pleasant evening to both of you.
47:09Well, ma'am, and again, I hear you.
47:12I hear you.
47:14But what we want to do is discourage the violence.
47:16So when a father disciplines a son by way of lashing its assault, he now goes to school.
47:22Sometimes these actions are what encourage young boys to be bullies.
47:28Because they are being hit in the home.
47:30When they come to school, they want somebody to hit because that is what they know.
47:34We understand and we don't want to stop anybody from disciplining their children.
47:39But we need to find innovative, modern ways to discipline our children rather than hit.
47:44That is violence.
47:46Nobody wants anybody to hit them.
47:48That is violence.
47:49So we need to really nip that in the bud and look at innovative, modern ways to discipline our children.
47:54Certainly an ongoing discussion.
47:56Discussion, yeah, definitely.
47:58So, I mean, as you see, it is six and one half dozen, the other.
48:03Yes.
48:04And everybody will have a different perspective.
48:06There is the old school way of thinking.
48:08Then there is the new school way of thinking.
48:10And I think we are kind of caught in the middle sometimes based on the situation or the circumstances of that particular child or the incident.
48:18But let me tell you this.
48:20If when you do something wrong at home, you are struck by your parent,
48:27you go to school and somebody do you something wrong, what do you think would happen?
48:31Members of the public, you think about that.
48:33What do you expect that child to do in that instance when he is accustomed to being hit at home when he does something wrong,
48:38when someone does something wrong with him?
48:40Yeah.
48:41Train that child in the ways and they shall not depart.
48:45Well, you see, as I say, societal changes is how we grew up in our time.
48:51You know, a good cocktail and straighten out our times, right?
48:55You have your stories.
48:57I have my stories.
49:00And innovative ways of disciplining children.
49:02Everybody will have different stories as it relates to, you know, disciplining their children.
49:07But as you have rightly pointed out, I think we have reached a stage now where, as you said,
49:14you have to go beyond that way of corporal, actual corporal punishment.
49:19And the way you treat children now with the advent of so many different, you know,
49:23you have social media and you have all the technology that they can show you up
49:27and some of you happen to be out of line.
49:30Look at how many persons would have ended up before the court.
49:33Look how many videos would have surfaced on social media with parents.
49:37And they do tend to go overboard.
49:39Because a lot of the times we hit our children, they do it out of rage.
49:42They're so upset.
49:44And for that moment, a wrong lash in the wrong place could put you behind bars, parents.
49:51And you know, as you mentioned that a couple of weeks or a couple of days ago,
49:56I remember seeing a particular video, I'm not sure if it, I mean, it's here in Trinidad,
50:01but of a lady, her child is on the ground lying and there's a camera over her in a bathroom area.
50:08And she's repeatedly striking the child.
50:12Like the child is not doing anything that I recall.
50:15Striking the child several times on their side and their leg and so on.
50:21And I could never support that. I'm sorry.
50:23Alright, we're going to take a short break and when we get back, we'll have more. Stay with us.
