05:04I tell people nurses are not just nurses in the region.
05:07We really do owe them sincere appreciation, love, gratitude.
05:13Meeting people in a vulnerable state, it's definitely a calling.
05:17That's why I chose this profession.
05:19We appreciate these people for really bringing us through challenging times.
05:23We appreciate you. We love you.

05:34Bruja!
05:41Shut up! Shut up!
05:43I've had enough of all of you.
05:45You ungrateful!
05:46I've had enough of you!
05:47You took us from our countries,
05:49and now forcefully pretend to have us working day and night like slaves,
05:52and expect us to be grateful?
06:05Just allow us to leave.
06:07Please, give us our passports and allow us to leave.
06:11You confirm our things are free to leave?
06:14If you step one foot out of here,

06:49They said that vaping is safer than smoking cigarettes.
06:53They said it has no health risks.
06:55They even said that it's just like water.
06:59They lied.
07:02Research suggests that vaping is harmful to both your heart and your lungs.
07:06And e-cigarettes are just as addictive as traditional ones.
07:10Consider the consequences.
07:12Don't vape.
07:18Man to man,
07:20violence is about self-control,
07:23compassion, respect,
07:26and man's development is in three stages.
07:30From animality to humanity,
07:33and from humanity to divinity.
07:37A full and developed mind
07:40is having that inner capacity
07:43to refrain from violence against women.
07:46Violence against women, then, is a sign of a lesser manhood.
07:59This is Mary.
08:01Mary has bills to pay
08:03and takes a chance parking in front of the building at the no parking sign.
08:08Mary returns to the building
08:10Mary returns to her car
08:12and this is what happens.
08:21Mary decides to call when she's five minutes away
08:24to let her daughter know that she is close by.
08:27But Mary forgot one thing.
08:35After two tickets,
08:38After two tickets,
08:40Mary just isn't paying attention to her speed.
08:58Don't be like Mary.
09:00Obey the laws of the road.

09:41Did you know that vaping with nicotine can permanently affect
09:44brain development in people under the age of 25?
09:52Did you know that e-cigarettes are associated with increased risk
09:55of stroke, heart attack, and heart disease?
09:58Did you know that for some people, vaping with or without nicotine
10:02disrupts the normal lung function in otherwise healthy people?
10:09Consider the consequences and don't vape.
10:11Don't vape.
10:19So you have big plans for the year, eh?
10:22A trip in July.
10:24You have big plans for the year, eh?
10:26A trip in July, birthday in November,

10:48Don't drink and drive.
10:54Don't drink and drive.
10:59Had sinned.
11:00Every man had sinned and come short of the glory of God.
11:03So no ordinary man could have died.
11:06God's design does not change.
11:09It expresses a fullness of joy.
11:13It expresses a healing.
11:19Morning.
11:20Morning.
11:21Listen, I've noticed something out.
11:24There are new people in the pub the whole day.
11:26What is that?
11:27The man is passing up and down in front of here with a set of women.
11:31I really noticed some women living there, you know.
11:34And they can't even say as much as good morning.
11:36Well, listen, I wonder if it's human trafficking.
11:39You think it's that?
11:41So, how can you spot and identify perpetrators and victims of trafficking?
11:46Many victims are found living and working together in the same place
11:50and sleep in shared and inappropriate spaces.
11:52Victims work excessively long hours.
11:55They often sleep in the daytime and work long nights.
11:58They are often escorted everywhere they go and may appear to be malnourished.
12:03They may show signs of physical abuse, drug and alcohol use
12:06and may also appear withdrawn, fearful or intimidated.
12:10Victims who are migrants are often not in possession of their identity or immigration documents
12:15and have irregular immigration status.
12:18Perpetrators can be male or female and may appear to be managing or controlling the victims.
12:24And they may even at times appear to be the victim's best friend, boyfriend or employer.
12:30We are the counter-trafficking unit of the Ministry of National Security Trinidad and Tobago
12:36safeguarding human life.
12:49Welcome to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Marc Besant.
12:54Today is Friday. I want to welcome you viewers across Trinidad and Tobago
12:59and our viewers across the globe.
13:02We really want to apologize for the late start.
13:05We've been having some technical difficulties
13:07and we are hopeful that as the show goes on we will be able to iron out those technical difficulties.
13:14And my guest today, no stranger of course, ACP Richard Smith
13:19of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Administrative and Operational Support.
13:24I want to welcome you today Mr. Smith and to wish you a happy new year.
13:28I know you're a pretty busy man so we're really happy that you were able to find the time to come here.
13:33Thank you very much Marc and good evening to the viewing and listening public of Trinidad and Tobago
13:37and happy new year to all of you.
13:40It's indeed a pleasure to be here with you this evening Marc.
13:43In this state of emergency that we are currently involved in,
13:47I'm very happy to share some information with the general public as to our progress thus far in this SOE.
13:55Yes and this is day 12 of the SOE.
13:59And of course the police have been executing a number of operations across the island of Trinidad and Tobago.
14:07And I know you will bring us up to speed in that remit as to what some of these exercises,
14:13the recent ones that is, might have yielded in terms of figures across the country, if you can.
14:20Okay, well just to start with the successes of last night.
14:23Last night alone, in the past 24 hours we, TTPS throughout Trinidad and Tobago,
14:29we recovered just over a million dollars in street value of marijuana, a million dollars.
14:36And we have recovered about five firearms overnight in different operations throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
14:43So I'll go into the statistics as we have it here now.
14:45It's a progressive statistics that we correlate on a daily basis.
14:49So thus far, the number of operations that we have conducted throughout Trinidad and Tobago is 562, 562.
14:58We have targeted 585 priority offenders thus far.
15:03However, the number of searches generated from these operations were 3,096 searches.
15:09So actual searching of homes, sometimes vehicles, other places that we have information about, 3,096.
15:17Traffic operations that we conducted thus far is 416.
15:21Persons arrested thus far for various offenses and on investigations that we are currently conducting, 465.
15:31We have detected 1,075 traffic offenses thus far and recovered 30 firearms and 937 assorted ammunition.
15:45Thus far, we have recovered 107 kilograms of marijuana and 599 grams of cocaine.
15:54That's just over half kilo of cocaine.
15:56So the marijuana is a more popular drug that we are recovering.
15:59And you know that when you look at street value, I just want to say something.
16:04One kilo of cocaine street value is $475,000.
16:10But you will take one kilo of cocaine, raw cocaine, and mix it and make it into three kilos of cocaine.
16:17So do the math for that.
16:19So three kilos from one kilo and $475,000 street value from one kilogram of cocaine.
16:27So that is the kind of money.
16:28That is why we are having this amount of murders and fighting because of drugs.
16:33Because the drugs are so lucrative.
16:36Any part of the world is so lucrative.
16:39So that is the reason.
16:41Then you have the marijuana with the street value.
16:44It's pretty expensive, about $127,000.
16:48With the new grade of marijuana, a genetically engineered type of marijuana that is quite potent.
16:54So it's a small amount.
16:55That's the one, that's the hydro under the lights.
16:57Yes.
16:58Yes.
16:59Something called a creepy.
17:00Yes.
17:01Right.
17:02So that is the one that is quite expensive.
17:04And I just need a little piece.
17:06That's why the street value is so high.
17:08Now, in some of these drug seizures that you all would have conducted over the last couple of days,
17:14are you all seeing in a way people would be, any unusual places that people are hiding this contraband?
17:23Yes.
17:24Or when you enter in their premises or in businesses or whatever.
17:27In a general sense, I'm asking.
17:29Yes.
17:30They are hidden in innovative ways now because they recognize that we are out and about.
17:34So it's a lot of innovative places that we are finding.
17:37We are finding these drugs, firearms.
17:40We have to be more meticulous in our searches as well.
17:43We really rely heavily on our canine section because they do a wonderful job.
17:47And we have been improving and increasing the number of canine that we have in the TTPS.
17:53So we rely heavily on them because of how difficult it is to find these drugs.
17:58Some people tend to sometimes in the PVC pipe in the plumbing system in their homes and false areas in their homes,
18:07cupboards and all these things.
18:08So we have to be very meticulous in finding these places.
18:12So we rely heavily on information from members of the public as well.
18:15So I just want to say at this stage, thank you so much to the members of the public who have been sharing information with us from time to time.
18:21Because without you, we would not be able to get this information in most instances.
18:26All these exercises are intelligence-led.
18:28So we are guided by our crime and problem analysis section.
18:33As we go for some of these persons, we are guided by our gang and intelligence units and the special investigations unit,
18:41head by DCP I.N.I., Ms. Suzette Martin.
18:45So all this information that we have, we are, in fact, working on them.
18:48We are proceeding against these gang members and other persons who we want for other crimes, you know, assiduously.
18:55And, you know, we are out and about.
18:57All right.
18:58Thanks so much for that information.
19:00We're going to have a discussion a little later more about this.
19:04But now we're going to take a short break.

20:43It's not a thrill when your speed can't kill.
21:14Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Besant.
21:22Joined today by ACP Richard Smith of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, and he is the administrative and operational support.
21:31Yes, got it correct.
21:33Now, unfortunately, the nation, we woke up to the news this morning of a double homicide in the Komoto area.
21:43The lives of Kumari Baksh and Athenia Law, this is the house here, and her husband, Nasheed Baksh, were found in that house sometime this morning by, I believe, a relative.
21:58They were found bound and gagged in the home.
22:03Apparently, the electricity meters were removed from the house, police believe, prior to the actual killing.
22:18I want to believe, Mr. Smith, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, maybe because the cameras would not have been able to capture any images of the perpetrators in that compound or within the confines of the home.
22:30Yes, yes, that is so true.
22:32We recognize that these criminals are getting more and more intelligent, I would say, and in what they are doing, they are covering all bases.
22:41It's not any kudos to them, it just goes to show how dangerous they can be and how calculating that they are when they are about to commit any offenses out there.
22:51It's quite unfortunate what happened to the deceased at this time.
22:57We are working on some theory that I would not like to share at this time, but we are working on some theories that, as a result of information received outside there today.
23:08It's quite sad to see that in the heights of a state of emergency, we still have persons intent on breaking the law and going to some of these secluded areas where they know that the police presence may not be as intense as the built-up areas.
23:23It just goes to show that they are looking at us, they are calculating our every move, and we have to be counteracting their move as well on a daily basis.
23:32Some people would believe that the police officers are not doing anything at all or not much, but on a daily basis, we are checking our strategies and rechecking and making adjustments to everything that we do because we know that we must be either a step ahead of the criminals or just there so that we'll be able to manage this state of crime that will happen in our country.
23:52Yes, and certainly, you know, those images that were brought by Robert from the Trinidad Express. Also, there is a photo of a young gentleman with the three of them, and he was remarking on social media today that they assisted him in putting him through law school, the gentleman here.
24:07Yes.
24:08A really humble couple, always willing to help persons apparently, and it's really sad that, you know, their lives have been lost in the way that it has been over the last couple of hours.
24:21Yes, exactly. You see, they have been helping persons as they go along in life, but this doesn't matter to these criminals, you know. And, you know, we are thinking about the police not doing anything, but what about the family? What about the values that we are, you know, teaching our children?
24:37It starts from home. And, you know, last week, Sunday, we had an interfaith service at the church in San Fernando, the Anglican Church in San Fernando, and one of the main things during the sermon I gathered is that the priest said that everybody tends to blame the police, or they tend to blame someone for something not happening as they would like it.
24:59He said even if they are hungry, too, they would blame somebody for not giving them the food or cooking the food for them on time. And what he went on to say was it was a problem that starts from the home, and we must recognize that the home plays an important part in growing up these children and growing them up to be responsible and adults with values. And if we do have that, then we will continue to have what we are having here, mayhem and crime. We cannot be everywhere at the same time, but we are, in fact, doing our best.
25:27Yes, certainly, and those were homicides six and seven, and unfortunately, there was an eighth homicide, and Mr. Smith will tell us about that in the Toco area earlier today.
25:39Yes, yes, and this is so unfortunate in that the deceased owns a home in another part of Trinidad. However, he has this home in Toco where he went to check it out because he don't normally stay there, and when he went there, he found that the home was broken into.
25:58He made a report to the police. Police responded yesterday afternoon, and he decided to remain there just to look out for his home. Unfortunately, his relative tried contacting him. The last time they would have spoken to him was last night around 7 p.m., and when they were not able to communicate with him, they contacted the Toco police, and they went to the home and discovered the deceased.
26:23Again, we are looking at how these criminals are behaving now. The deceased is 79 years old. How much harm could he have caused them? Did they have to go that far? But it just goes to show the mentality and the fact that they don't care and the fact that there's no consequences, or there are no consequences for their actions.
26:47One, it's taken too long, and two, the sentence is when they go to prison, they're having a good time. They're having an enjoyable time in prison, and I call it the university of crime now because that is where they meet the other criminals, and they plan to do other crimes. So we're doing our part. We send them there. The court sends them there, and then they continue their life of crime from behind the walls.
27:13In a state of emergency, I remember we were talking about five homicides yesterday, and today it's the 10th of January, and we're almost back to one per day. We had eight.
27:29It certainly is very disheartening to see a couple lose their life in such a manner, and then another elderly gentleman die, being found around the same time, I guess, as the couple in Komoto, dying in the way that they had to die.
27:46So there's also a missing person. Mr. Matthew Boudelier was found today at an area in Princesong Fairfield area. Now, Mr. Boudelier, I hope I pronounced it correctly, was last seen on December 16th last year.
28:12This is Mr. Valence Rambrad from the Hunter Search and Rescue Team, who went down to the area upon hearing about the discovery. It's a very bushy area, forested area. It looks like a dirt track even, Mr. Smith, and I know you'll be familiar with the area, working in the Southern Division previously.
28:31And what they found was Mr. Boudelier hanging from a tree near a pond, and they said it looked suspicious, of course, and I know we could only be able to determine whether or not foul play is suspected until they do a post-mortem.
28:51Yes, yes. So, you know, it brings back memories, you know, when we see this type of hanging. Yes, we must leave our minds open to all possibilities, and you see the area where this body was found.
29:08It's almost, what, three weeks, just over three weeks he was missing, so, you know, we never know what might have triggered his disappearance, and we don't want to speculate at this point, you know, the police is on the scene, and due diligence will be done on a post-mortem will obviously reveal whether or not there was any, you know, suspect activity involved in his death.
29:35But you know what I want to say at this time? You know, long ago, when there's a murder with my body found, people used to be scared to go close to that, and now you have even young people taking video footage of these dead bodies on the ground.
29:50So we have become so desensitized with the amount of murders that is happening, I don't know, we don't really care about it. Somebody dies, and it's life as normal. We understand that people have to move on, but the fact is that once we get desensitized, then we just don't care, we just continue going on and on as we are going, you know.
30:07It's really sad that the first thing that they would want to do is take out their phones rather than even help somebody that is in distress, or in a confrontation, and I'm still trying to put reason to that.
30:37They are being assaulted by someone they are trying to arrest, and they will never put their hands to assist in that regard, and the police are there to protect and serve every single person.
30:46Well, it speaks to the type of some of the persons that exist in our society.
30:50Exactly.
30:51We're going to take a short break, and we'll be back. Stay with us.
30:53Plumbing problems? Don't guess. Call Plumbing Solutions at 628-4646.

32:38Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Bassan, of course, joined today by ACB Richard Smith of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Administrative and Operational Support.
32:55And he said he has been doing some good work with the police officers in the Southern Division. And in the last couple of hours, I know that you all made a major breakthrough in a car-stealing ring.
33:08Yes, yes. So this is continuous work being done by the Southern Division under the supervision or leadership of ASP Ramdat Philip and Inspector Don Wilkinson of the CID Southern Division.
33:20And, you know, we are plagued by lasting motor vehicles. And what I want to say is that one of the second most important investment a person might make in their life is a vehicle.
33:33And when you could steal somebody's vehicle, you're really hitting them a serious dent. And then you have some people purchasing vehicles for their livelihood.
33:41So some fishermen, some businessmen who have their K2700 and H100 vehicles, those are the third and a half pickups, they steal them on a regular basis.
33:52And, you know, the Southern Division officers did an intelligence-led operation in the Princess Town District. And they were able to recover four ton and a half vehicles.
34:05Two of them were H100s and the other two were K2700. The Kia, they are called the K2700. And the Hyundai, they are called the H100.
34:17So those are complete vehicles there. They also found two cabs as well as engine and a tray that was partially scrapped.
34:26So, you know, we are calling on members of the public who may have lost any of these type of vehicles to communicate with Inspector Wilkinson and ASP Philip at the San Fernando CID.
34:40However, these vehicles are currently lodged at the San Marlon Police Station. So they can go there, they can meet with the sergeant, and they can have a view of these vehicles to see if they can identify them.
34:50It doesn't matter that they have on a particular registration plate on them. At this stage, they are in fact false number plates, so you can still feel free to go down and check out these vehicles.
35:00I have a question for you, but we have a call online. Caller, good evening. Good evening, caller.
35:08Good evening, Mark. Good evening to the officer. Happy New Year to both of you.
35:14Officer, I want to ask two questions, please.
35:19First of all, I know you are assigned to the St. Joseph Police Station. I have been trying my utmost to get on to the person in charge for months now.
35:30And whenever I call to the operator, the phone in St. Joseph, the sentry or whatnot, to put me on to the person, the DCP, the phone just keeps ringing and ringing.
35:42I'm not getting any feedback. I don't know why the problem. That's number one.
35:47And number two, sometimes the time in police stations, they have problems with receipts.
35:54When they make a report, some of the police stations don't have a receipt book.
36:00That has been a major headache for people wanting to make reports.
36:05So could you enlighten myself and also the importance of one having a receipt, being issued a receipt from a police officer after they make a report? Thank you.
36:20Okay. And that's a good question.
36:22You know, we implemented the receipt books because we wanted persons to have some record of who they made a report to so that they would be able to communicate with that officer.
36:32So even if they go to make inquiries, they would have that information. It would make it easier for them to get that.
36:36Now, at times, receipt books do run out. However, it's not an excuse.
36:41What we are trying to do now is make it on soft copy.
36:45So at least we can email that to your phone, your email address, or even send a WhatsApp to you, the fact that you made a report to us.
36:51But we are still, you know, in the stage of giving receipts, the hard copies.
36:56So we will try our best. I will speak with the senior superintendent, North Central Division. That's Senior Superintendent Michael Pierre.
37:03I will speak with him and I will ask him to check out the situation as it relates to the phone at the St. Joseph Police Station.
37:10And I'm just asking the caller, if you need to see the senior superintendent at North Central Division, you can go to St. Joseph Police Station and meet with him because he has an open door policy.
37:21And he will, in fact, meet with you when you go there. So please, you know, try that option and you can make your reports there.
37:27And, you know, we will be taking a look at the receipts, try to print some more while we try to get it on a soft copy for persons making reports.
37:38Right. So I hope that explains, you know, the callers' questions.
37:43And as we talk about, you know, this issue of crime and how communities and how the police can better engage with communities, the Tobago Division has something called the ROCC, the Island Reclaiming Our Communities from Crime.
38:02It's a grassroots initiative born out of the TTPS Tobago Division, dedicated to transforming neighborhoods in Tobago into safe and thriving environments through the power of community collaboration.
38:14And by working closely with communities, local schools, businesses and residents, the initiative is aimed to address the root causes of crime, such as poverty, lack of resources through education, mentorship and community-led programs.
38:30If you could just enlighten us more about this program.
38:32Yes. Well, it's indeed a wonderful program that our senior superintendent in charge of Tobago Division told me don't call out his name.
38:40But I'll call his name because it's a wonderful initiative.
38:42So Senior Superintendent Earl Eli, together with ACP Subero, they are currently up in Tobago running that division.
38:51And they came up with this initiative, Reclaiming Our Communities from Crime.
38:56And it's a wonderful initiative.
38:58It started today, it actually kicked off today with the Soka Warriors going up to Tobago and visiting six schools.
39:05They are doing a kind of mentorship program as it relates to bringing persons away from the life of crime.
39:11And then they are also looking at the social aspect of it where we have persons, poverty issues, we have persons staying away from school, truancy.
39:21And we need to get control of these things.
39:24We need parents to be aware.
39:26So it's a whole social program that they are trying to engage in.
39:31And it's through sports.
39:33And sports is a universal language.
39:35Despite what, we come together when it comes to sports.
39:38Whether it's football, cricket, basketball, anything, we come together.
39:41We will cheer for the same side.
39:43But we know in some countries, we know there's war and fight when it comes to persons not winning the side that did not win.
39:50But in this instance, we are using sports to bring this community, the community of Tobago.
39:55Everybody in Trinidad loves to go to Tobago because it's a relaxing time.
39:59So imagine our place where we could go for a leisure time, to relax and have a good weekend or a good vacation.
40:07It's still a crime haven.
40:09We cannot allow that.
40:10So while we are fighting in Trinidad, we have to fight in Tobago.
40:13And they are utilizing all techniques, inclusive of this initiative, to bring Tobago back to the place that we knew it to be.
40:22So I want to commend ACP Subero, Senior Eli and his team in Tobago for the wonderful job that they have been doing thus far for this initiative.
40:30For including the Soka Warriors who are mentors to many young men in this country.
40:35Young men and women, you know, and bringing them to Tobago to go to these schools.
40:39They went to six schools today already and they are continuing.
40:42Tomorrow they will be having a game.
40:43And I know one of the initiatives is that the Soka Warriors will be playing the TTPS.
40:47I think it's tomorrow.
40:48Right.
40:49That is one of the kickoff games.
40:50And then every week.
40:52Do you think they'll have a good chance to beat them?
40:54Yeah, they could beat everybody, man.
40:56I hope Soka Warriors didn't hear that.
41:01My friend went and said, great, we'll agree with that.
41:07No, we have some good players there from TTPS.
41:09Most certainly, I imagine so.
41:11Yes, and then we have, you know, every week the TTPS team will be going to different villages in Tobago and playing against them.
41:18So just to foster that kind of relationship and bring the community closer.
41:23You know, at least, you know, we're trying some new initiative to see if this could work and take the person's mind away from crime.
41:29And, you know, it's so easy to influence the youth, sir.
41:32It's so easy to influence them to go the wrong direction because they tend to glamorize these gang members and gang leaders because of the big chain and the goal and the life they perceive that they are living.
41:42But tell me this.
41:43When last did a gang leader go to cinema?
41:46Good question.
41:48And I just want to remind everybody in Tobago, all the youngsters out there, of the sports clinic tomorrow at Shore Park starts at 3 p.m.
41:56You're going to see some of our former national heroes who played for Trinidad and Tobago in 2006, men like Brent Sanchez, etc.
42:05So go out there and intermingle with them.
42:08We're going to take a short break and we'll be back.
42:10Stay with us.
42:42This does not make a trade as limited.
42:44No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
43:14, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
43:44we appreciate you. We love you. Be viewing caribbean medical TV this Sunday at seven thirty p.m. On CCN, TV six.
44:02Welcome back to Be on the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Wilson joined today by ACP Richard Smith
44:06from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service in charge of administrative and operational
44:12support. Just a quick question about these stolen vehicles. I saw a pattern there of these trucks,
44:18these small trucks, right? Yes. What do you suppose they were trying to do with those trucks?
44:23Were they trying to sell them over or they were using it to do business of some nature? Okay,
44:29so these trucks are used by scrap iron dealers, they're used by fishermen and they're used by
44:34some businessmen, you know, and it's quite a lucrative business with these trucks because
44:39these parts are quite valuable. Expensive. You want to, it's fairly new. Exactly. The vehicle
44:46looks fairly new too. Yes, so if the number plate is false, by the way, but these parts are very
44:51expensive and what they do in a lot of instances is scrap these vehicles and sell them for parts.
44:56Otherwise, they would re-stamp the chassis, the chassis number and sell them, put on another
45:01number plate to match the chassis number that they have placed on there and sell it as a vehicle
45:07that, you know, someone else owned or they own probably. So, if you have a crash one like this
45:11or you have a rotten one like this, right? You would just and it's easy to just change parts,
45:17interchange parts on them. So, they would just change the chassis number or sometimes just take
45:21parts from the new one and put it on the old chassis and just have a new looking van running
45:25on the roadway. So, it's quite a lucrative business. Very innovative, yes? Yes. Very innovative and
45:30speaking about innovative, we have a very interesting clip, you know, it's a kind of
45:37a high man clip. I just want to warn you. Okay. I couldn't believe it when I got the clip
45:44of a gentleman actually sitting in the church, sitting in the church,
45:52while a service is going on. What do you suspect that might be in his hands and what is he doing?
46:01I'll leave it up to your observation skills to guide the viewers.
46:08The priest is handing out, I guess, communion or something is happening up in front
46:13and my Leonard friend here is rolling a weed or cleaning something in his hands. Yes.
46:22And you see the small amount there? Yes. So, it might be some creepy that he has there
46:27and look at the proximity from the priest. And children are right there as well? Yes, they are
46:30there and I'm sure I'm seeing someone looking in his direction. This is outrageous. Disrespectful
46:38and values again we're looking at. Yes. Values, look at that and it's an adult. And he doesn't
46:43have any respect for the church, the place of God. Exactly. In any measure. This is where we
46:51have reached. If they could break into churches and steal and destroy or temples or even mosques,
46:59what does it take for them to go and do that in a church and even worse than that?
47:03Well, we're hopeful that somebody who knows him will be able to send some kind of information to
47:07you guys. Disrespectful. Because, you know, it's a possession of an illicit substance there.
47:15Exactly. In the confines of a church, their children and so on. The other charges that
47:20could be tacked onto possession. You see, everything is not good to say, but you see,
47:26decriminalizing marijuana, it led to this level of disrespect. Because people believe they could
47:32do all that. Even having four trees per adult person in a home, what are we teaching our children?
47:39Because who would be around all the time to stop them or to prevent them from taking some of the
47:44leaves and smoking them? And that is why these community projects that the TTPS is putting on
47:51in collaboration with these sporting heroes. Yes. Of course, in Tobago is extremely important as well
47:57as right here in Trinidad as well. That kind of marrying of sport, you know, a lot of young
48:04aspiring athletes. Some fall by the wayside. Exactly. Because you live in an area where
48:09they are influenced to join a gang. Yes. Or they are influenced to do some other illicit kind of
48:14activity. Yes. And these guys, even young women, some even are so talented and then they lose their
48:22way because they end up in a gang or the wrong company. Wrong company. And then sometimes because
48:29they are regarded as safe persons. Remember, they are national hero or they might be somebody
48:33involved in sports who police may not think are involved in crime. Some of these gang personnel
48:40force them at times to keep stuff for them. Those are safe areas.
48:44We know of persons who have to keep stuff for gang members because they are afraid.
48:50They put it in their property and you can't tell them anything about it. Yeah. And sadly, you know,
48:54we had a situation a couple days ago in December where a former national footballer was held with
49:01a quantity of arms and ammunition. Yes. Yes. At his home as well as other, I think it was also
49:09drugs as well. Drugs as well. Involved. My understanding, just speaking to people, was that
49:15the person was involved in money lending and all these different things and he was being
49:20intimidated in some measure and he decided to arm himself up. Just talking to police officers
49:25without calling anybody's name. And it's really sad that, you know, that the person resorted to
49:32what he had to do. But so much. Yeah, I know. I mean, it's a lot of arms and ammunition.
49:40But I know. I guess to this, with this state of emergency, you all have that freedom to,
49:48if people have information. Yes. Or you have solid information that your neighbor has two guns
49:54hiding in the washing machine. Yes. Do not hesitate to reach out to a particular officer
50:01that you might trust or you might know that you give them this information and they can act on it
50:07because we are in a state of emergency, of course, and we know the police also has to be guided by
50:12certain legal parameters. Exactly. And be responsible in how they carry about their duty. Exactly.
50:16At least we are hopeful that you all will do that as well. We are in fact, you know, exercising our
50:22our powers responsibly. And the thing is that what we have to be mindful of or the public has
50:28to be mindful of is that because we are going after these criminals in a more aggressive manner,
50:36you need to be aware of your surroundings, your home, your yard, your property, because they can
50:42place things across the fence. And if we find it there, then you might have to answer a question
50:47or two. Right. So you need to be aware of your surroundings, checking your yard, make sure your
50:51yard is clean, check all the areas that persons might be able to put things easily. Most of these
50:55areas where people live without fences. Yeah. It's quite easy for anybody to come, police running
51:00them down and just stick something right there. So you have to be careful about your location.
51:04And I'm saying this too. If you find or you see any firearms on your property, call the hotline
51:11numbers that we give there. 999-555. Call the local police and let them come for it. Please do
51:18not handle the firearms because for your safety and for obvious reasons as well, possession of
51:24firearms is still an offence. And we need you all to be responsible. Call the police and let us come
51:30and remove those items from your place. I know you might be afraid that the police would come and
51:35arrest and charge you. But if you see it somewhere, you call, you can call anonymously and say, I saw
51:41a gun at a particular place and let them come and remove it from there. Please. Right. We certainly
51:47hope that you take Mr. Smith's advice. We're going to take a short break and we'll be back. Stay with
53:21the 2024 First Citizen Sports Awards and 2025 Hall of Fame induction Saturday at 7.30 p.m. on TV6.
53:30This is my first time here. Hopefully it's my last. My dear friends, here we are. All in our true colors.
53:40One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
53:46Your transfer papers, your key to the Mvule kingdom.
53:50Hi, I'm Lisa. I know. Here are your clippers, clippers.
53:57Jose, we are perfect. We run this place. So let's act like it. Solomon, the head
54:04prefect, quick. Is my collar straight? We'll be out of Mvule high before you can pronounce the word
54:09scholarship. We have a mystery to solve. The only way we can make a difference is if we stick
54:17together. When I'm head prefect, each and every student will have a voice. We need to show that
54:24Mvule high. I hate this school.
54:40Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Mark Bassan, joined today by ACP Richard Smith
54:44of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, administrative and operational support. And
54:49I know Mr. Smith just wanted to share, you know, this whole issue of extortion and, and being one
54:54of those persons who is pivotal in investigating these extortion cases and extortion rings.
55:01He just wanted to bring us up to speed and to share some new information. Yes. And thank you,
55:06Mark. You know, this extortion is something quite prevalent now. And just to be quick with it.
55:11Recently, we received a report where this particular victim, her husband was being extorted.
55:20Unfortunately, the husband passed, but these extortionists still believed that she was
55:26supposed to pay, you know, in the absence of the husband, she was supposed to pick up that debt.
55:31I know this goes to show how cruel these persons could be, how they are uncaring as it relates to
55:37persons. So they are quite aware of what had taken place. So they now transfer that taxing,
55:44as they call it, to the remaining spouse. So, you know, it's quite unfortunate. However,
55:51we have been working assiduously. We have been arresting suspects. And with the state of
55:56emergency, we are in fact working together with other agencies and arresting some of these persons
56:01who are wanted by us as well for extortion. All right, we're going to have to leave it there
56:06today. We want to thank Mr. Smith for spending some time with us here. So guess what? Repeat
56:12tonight at 1130. The TV6 News is up next. I'm wishing you a great weekend and a very safe one.
56:21So we just wanted to quickly, you know, point you to the California fires. There are a lot of
56:26distress, a lot of people losing their homes, some people losing their lives, having to evacuate,
56:34some very, you know, startling images there of those fires. All right,
56:41so we'll see you on Monday. Have a great weekend.
