02:43Welcome to Beyond the Tape, I'm your host Marc Bessant.
02:46Of course it's Monday and we want to welcome our viewers across Trinidad and Tobago and
02:51of course across the world.
02:53It's day 71 of the state of emergency and joining us today as always on a Monday, Captain
03:00Valence Rambratt of the Hunter, Search and Rescue Team.
03:02How are you sir and how was your weekend?
03:04I'm fine, thank you Marc and I think I wasn't here for the carnival the Monday after the
03:10carnival.
03:11So let me start with carnival, carnival, I was abroad on a short vacation but the team
03:16continued to function and what we didn't witness this year was a slew of missing persons
03:23or teenage runaway girls during this period.
03:28Additionally there were no drownings because we were concerned about that, the team was
03:32standby to do some patrols on the beaches.
03:37These did not materialise.
03:38So over the carnival period I would say it was a relatively quiet one for us.
03:46There was one incident where a girl went missing and her ransom was demanded, $5,000 for her,
03:54the anti-kidnapping unit and the police went out in the Barataria district and thank God
03:59she showed up early the next morning.
04:02But apart from those, it was relatively quiet.
04:05What we're seeing now is an increase in elderly persons who are going missing and when we
04:11come to the update I'll show you what we have from March thus far.
04:16But very, very, very, I think we were elated this morning when Augustus Forbes, a 69-year-old
04:23gentleman who went missing 54 months ago, he was reported missing by his landlady.
04:31He has no next of kin resident in Trinidad and Tobago.
04:36He has a wide range of ageing disorders.
04:40We knew that.
04:41It was very difficult for us to locate Augustus Forbes and this morning we received information
04:48via a telephone call from the Conopia police station that they were able to locate Mr.
04:54Augustus Forbes.
04:55And I want to say thank you to his landlady, Ms. Dainani Ramsor, and publicly for following
05:02up on this case for the past 54 months.
05:06And I think there was jubilation in our camp when he was located because we did have concerns
05:12about whether or not harm came to him during this period of time.
05:17And that's it in a very long time.
05:19Looking at the period, there was some time in 2022, August 2022?
05:23Yeah, September 2020.
05:24September, sorry.
05:26When you all received the call from the police, what did they say?
05:30How did they locate him?
05:33Did somebody tip them off based on the photo they would have seen?
05:36Yeah, it was based on the photo they would have seen and he came around the Conopia police
05:42station and when they asked his name, he gave his name and when they checked the records,
05:48they found that he was missing and hence the call to us to inform us that he's safe.
05:56Ms. Dainani Ramsor is working with the police to see whether she could take him back as
06:02a renter because he is receiving old age pension, but he has a combination of dementia and dyslexia
06:08so they tend to go missing and lose direction and knock all over the country without being
06:13detected until finally he showed up at the Conopia police station.
06:18Wow, that's amazing.
06:19I mean, thankfully he is alive and well and we hope that he gets back to the place where
06:26he was staying for quite a while.
06:27Where he's comfortable and she's a good landlady and she ensures that he eats well and gets
06:33his medication.
06:34So she was really concerned over this period of time and I say hats off to her, she's a
06:38good landlady.
06:40Yeah, certainly.
06:41I guess for him to go to the police station, he still had some semblance of his mind.
06:48Yeah, because with dementia it comes and goes depending on the given day, but I think his
06:55biggest problem really is the Alzheimer's, is Alzheimer's where you're lost in that sense
07:01of direction and that cannot be repaired.
07:05You have to probably put a tag on him now and I did let her know that she should get
07:10a tag, monitor it on the phone so you know his whereabouts at any point in time on any
07:17day.
07:18I think that's advice we should give to the entire public, especially when it comes to
07:24elderly people who have that kind of...
07:27The thing about the tags is just like the size of a coin, they're available in Trinidad
07:31and Tobago now and you could slip it in their pocket or somewhere in the pants that they
07:37wear so that they can't take it out and you can track these elderly persons, it's done
07:44all over the United States.
07:45You've got a shoe that they customarily wear as well, I mean the pants, you can change
07:50it regularly, sometimes they might use a shoe more regularly than maybe they might change
07:56shoes as well, even your t-shirt or shirt, sorry, where there's pockets, shoes you're
08:00inclined to use a little more often depending on the comfort of it and so on.
08:05Totally agree with you on that suggestion.
08:08So we want to encourage persons who have elderly folks who have aging disorders to please get
08:15the tags, they're available, it's pretty cheap in Trinidad and you can link it to your phone
08:20and you can locate them at any given point in time.
08:22Yeah, I guess today I'd have an Apple phone, in most cases, as far as I understand, or
08:29they have for the Androids, I don't know, I didn't see it, but yeah I guess.
08:33I'll probably put up some on our page and probably send some to TV6 as well so they
08:38could just, you know it's not advertisement, but we could just make a suggestion as to
08:43what type of tags are available.
08:45All types of phones, Android or otherwise, so that people can be cognizant of it and
08:50know that it's a safety measure rather, not only just for elderly people of course, but
08:55for persons, you know like children, if you want to keep, ensure that they're safe going
09:00to school or going somewhere, I guess that in itself will also work as a safety mechanism
09:06for parents and other persons who.
09:08Yeah, and they're readily available, I mean we did publish on our page the tags and we'll
09:15do it again and probably push it over the next couple of weeks, but it's available and
09:20it's useful for any person to have.
09:22Wonderful.
09:23Alright, it's day 71 of the state of emergency and we just want to bring you up to speed
09:29with the figures thus far.
09:33So we have number of operations conducted 3,564 priority offenders targeted, 2,583 searches
09:44conducted 24,599, traffic operations to date 3,225, total persons arrested 2,730, traffic
09:57offenses detected 12,343, firearms recovered 129, ammunition recovered 2,903, dangerous
10:10drugs seized thus far 324,300 grams of cannabis and 2,800 grams of cocaine and 73 grams of
10:22ecstasy and a new column there, 5 grams of crystal meth.
10:29So you see that the police is continuing their operations, of course they radio our streets
10:35and environment of not just drugs but firearms and any other illicit things and illicit activities
10:42or persons involved in illicit activities.
10:45Right, Mark and 129 firearms recovered in 69 days, that's excellent and I'm looking
10:51at the number of searches conducted over basically 2 months, 10 days, excellent.
10:59I saw that you pointed out the meth, there is a prevalence of the synthetic drugs on
11:08the market and they need to pay attention to that, those are the ecstasy pills and the
11:14mollies and different types of new drugs on the market and they must pay attention to
11:22those drugs as well.
11:24And I've noticed as well, just very quickly, we had about 4 murders over the weekend of
11:29course and it pumped the murder count to 72 for the year thus far, comparatively it's
11:36lower than the last 2 years but of course you made a very interesting point Captain
11:41Rambra that we are approximately 69 days for the year gone and we have 72 murders, so we
11:47are running just above 1 per day but even if Mark, if you run a little above 1 per day
11:53on the Katlanas on December 31st, 2025 at around 400 murders, there will be a substantial
12:00decrease in the murder rate in this country over previous years but one murder is too
12:07much and this bump because I think the police service, I've been looking at them and I know
12:16you as well, they have to be able to be dynamic to respond to when you see a little bump in
12:24the murder rate, so this is the period after carnival.
12:27I was thinking today Mark that I don't know how the criminals operate but to me, all police
12:35officers were supposed to work over the carnival weekend and I don't know if the criminal minds
12:40thought that well yes, they will have a little lull in police searches and activities and
12:47opportunity was used to bump it up but I know the police service will do all that they can
12:55to address this little bump as we go forward.
12:58Yes, Sydney and of course a lot of firearm related homicides as well, when you look at
13:02over the weekend, I think all 4 happened to be shootings.
13:07Mark, I know you were looking when I was away for the carnival period but the choice of
13:16weapon where you had minor incidents was I think knives and that type of bottle pelting,
13:24something we are accustomed to over the years, those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s
13:29and stuff and I know there was one murder on carnival Tuesday.
13:35Yes, someone was stabbed with a knife on Eastern Main Road, Laventerland, that area there.
13:41Right, but there was also one in St. James, I think that one was a shooting.
13:47Alright, we are going to go now to our headlines.
14:04Alright, those were the headlines within the last 24 hours and of course we have some
14:29video about a scene at Orangefield Road in Coover that occurred over the last few days,
14:35a shooting rather, a police responded to a homicide involving a young man who was shot
14:43and killed in that area there and as we talk about gun related violence rearing its ugly head
14:50here once again, a young man, I think he was in his early 30s, I can't recall his name right now
14:58but definitely he was one of the four killed over the last couple of days, Captain.
15:03Yeah and I'm looking on and I'm seeing that he's wearing a tall boots, he's a working man
15:09and I'm not sure of the circumstances but I'm a 36-year-old gentleman and in that area too,
15:17we don't have much murders so I'm not sure what the circumstances behind it
15:22but there are a lot of reasons for murders and sometimes I often wonder whether it's still
15:28conflict between men and they don't know how to resolve their differences peacefully.
15:33Yes and unfortunately there was an incident I believe yesterday at the C3 shopping mall in
15:43near San Fernando, where a business owner was ambushed by two armed assailants and shot.
15:54Apparently he had left his business, well he apparently collected, leaving his business and
16:00collected, you know, some money from rent and so on from people and I gather that these men
16:06were really looking at him over a period of time, would have seen that he perhaps conduct,
16:11collects our monies from various persons and they decided that it was that opportune time
16:18to actually go there on Saturday night around 7.45 and if you go to C3 mall regularly on the
16:26weekends, it's packed, it's packed, it's a lot of people, a lot of people, so he would have been
16:32observed over a period of time. He is very lucky, let me say this, to get away from that
16:37alive because normally they wouldn't leave any witnesses or anything to the, on the crime scene.
16:44So, but I'm sure CCTV footage, there would be lots of CCTV footage there at C3 to assist the
16:51investigators in trying to apprehend the perpetrators because it seems most likely
16:58that it is a robbery. All right, we are hopeful that that business owner makes a full recovery
17:04and the persons that are responsible for that crime is held in the shortest possible time.
17:10We're going to take a short break and we'll be back, stay with us.
17:17We as a public too, I think we need to be more vigilant and watch each other's back.
17:22It's a must. We have more eyes on the police out here but nobody sees anything unless it happens to them.
17:35Welcome to Holiday Inn Express, I'm Stacey.

20:00A message from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
20:12Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
20:14I'm your host, Mark Bassan,
20:15joined today by Captain Valence Rambarat from the Hunter's Search and Rescue Team
20:19as we bring you up to speed with missing persons for the month of February
20:23and of course into March.
20:25Yeah, so Mark, for February we had 28 reports of missing persons
20:30and that is keeping the lower trend for 2025
20:34where we're looking at one per day on average.
20:37In previous years we were averaging roughly about 1.75, 1.5 persons per day.
20:44And we have eight outstanding persons for February
20:49and these persons still outstanding are Shakir Gomez
20:54and we have no new leads on Shakir Gomez at this point in time
21:00and but we continue to liaise with the family
21:03and we will work with them until he is found.
21:07We have Deborah Cornwall.
21:08This is a cold case from January 2024 that was reported to us in February
21:14and she was renting an apartment in Barataria there
21:21and the family has not been able to locate her.
21:25So we assist in this family as well.
21:28We're not sure what happened to Deborah
21:30but if you have information on Deborah, please feel free to call us.
21:35Ryan Hasrana remains missing from the Karapu District
21:39and he was a witness to a murder in that district
21:43and we have no leads in terms of Ryan Hasrana at this point in time.
21:50We have Ramon Campbell.
21:52Again, no new leads on Ramon Campbell.
21:55However, after the program we're heading down to the Cuva District
21:59and we will go out to the police station there
22:02and find out what's the latest with Ramon Campbell,
22:05what information they have that could assist us
22:08and the police to safely locate him.
22:12Maria James, she's a repeat teenage...
22:15Maria James, yeah?
22:17Repeat teenage runaway female, juvenile
22:22and we're in touch with her mother
22:24and some progress is being made on this case.
22:27I don't want to say much about it
22:28but hopefully when we come back next Monday,
22:31she would have been located.
22:33And then we have Alejandra Macano.
22:37We have no leads on her as well
22:39and one of the problems here we experience again
22:41is the language barrier.
22:43We're in contact with her mother
22:46and every single day she calls to find out
22:49if we have any leads on Alejandra Macano,
22:5213 years old from the Chaguanas District
22:56and we still have Kieran Simon as missing
23:00and Mark, this is the gentleman in the Coast Guard,
23:04able-bodied Coast Guard man
23:07who went missing on that drug bus between Trinidad and Grenada.
23:13I did read in the newspaper where they were saying
23:16your story.
23:17Yes.
23:17So you could probably give us an update
23:19on what they're looking at, Mark?
23:21The police, I spoke with some senior officers
23:23who are part and parcel of the investigation
23:26and what they did say was that
23:28with the assistance of foreign authorities,
23:30they have been able to locate the vessel underwater
23:34about 300 meters down.
23:36So they're in the process of trying to retrieve that vessel
23:40and hopefully, we don't know, depending of course
23:43on a Coast Guard officer telling me that,
23:45you know, it's been a long time
23:47and you remember when a body's underwater,
23:49exposure to the water, marine life and so on,
23:52it's going to be very difficult maybe
23:54to find any significant remains of that person.
23:58What the literature shows, Mark,
24:00is that they will be able to find his body
24:02because there's less oxygen as you go deeper in the water.
24:06So we're hopeful that at least...
24:07Because we have Pete Phillip in the incident
24:12with rig 110 and his body has not been recovered.
24:16And that's just 60 feet of water.
24:18That's one way I'm not too sure
24:20whether they would get anything.
24:22But Mark, I just want to make one point on that.
24:24We've seen, we've had an oil spill in Tobago.
24:27We have an industrial oil accident
24:29and in the Gulf of Paria,
24:32we now have a Coast Guard incident.
24:34There is need for Trinidad and Tobago
24:37to acquire its own heavy-lift sea vessel.
24:42And in all three instances, they were needed.
24:44So rather than wait until a vessel has to leave
24:47the United States to come here
24:49and pay a whole set of money to have it here
24:51for a long period of time, it's simple.
24:54I've been speaking to people in the oil industry
24:57and we need that.
24:58The energy industry in Trinidad
24:59needs a heavy-lift marine vessel
25:03for our country and probably the Caribbean.
25:06And then we have Godfrey Toussaint Jr.
25:08He is 53 years old.
25:11His sister is concerned about him.
25:15And his last known address was that he was in Santa Grande.
25:23He was living with a girlfriend there in 2023.
25:26They've lost all contact with him.
25:28It doesn't mean to say that any harm
25:30would have come to him.
25:31We just want persons to look at the poster
25:36and see if you could try to remember
25:39if you saw Godfrey anywhere in the Santa Grande district
25:42or any part of Trinidad and Tobago
25:44because we have to try to locate him.
25:46His two sisters are desperately trying to locate him.
25:50They've lost touch with him.
25:51He doesn't have a phone.
25:53And they're wondering what became of him.
25:58And then as we went to March,
25:59as we began March, Mark, we've had 11 reports
26:05thus far of missing persons.
26:07And six persons remain unaccounted for.
26:11And I want to, Mark, pay attention
26:13to the profile of these persons, right?
26:16Marlon Henwood is missing from the Siparia district.
26:19He was seen throwing things all on the highway and stuff.
26:23So his mental health is compromised.
26:26And we've been looking at those
26:28whose mental health are compromised
26:30and asking the relatives to pay close attention to them
26:34to ensure that they don't go missing
26:36and harm come to them while they're out there.
26:39The next one is Jamal Williams,
26:42a young man, 34 years old, from Cashew Gardens.
26:47His mental health is also compromised.
26:50And he has been seen in the Coover district.
26:53Hence the reason we also want to go down
26:56to the Coover district after this program
26:59to see if we could assist the family
27:01to find Jamal Williams and continue following the profile.
27:08Joseph Andrews from Arema, 71 years old.
27:12He left home.
27:13His wife has been looking for him.
27:17Our team up in Arema has been looking for him.
27:20But he suffers from dementia and Alzheimer's.
27:23And that's why I say let's look at the profile of these for March.
27:27We're seeing a lot of these coming in.
27:29And you have to almost keep your eyes on them 24-7.
27:36Or get the tags or make sure that they are properly supervised at all times
27:42if you have to go to the grocery or if you have to go elsewhere.
27:46And the next one as well, Richard Lopez from San Fernando.
27:49He's 70.
27:51He still has not been located.
27:53And our people in San Fernando keeping an eye out.
27:56I was on my way up to the program when I was looking,
27:58keeping my eyes out to see if I would have seen
28:01Richard Lopez in the San Fernando district.
28:04He is still outstanding.
28:06And the next person we have is again Mahindra Daniel.
28:12Now his problem, well he was at his brother's home.
28:15He actually was last seen in the Valencia district
28:20by his brother's home.
28:21He and a friend spent the night without the brother knowing
28:24that the friend was there.
28:26And they left very early in the morning.
28:28And he still has not been located.
28:31We hope Mahindra, nothing is wrong with him.
28:34But that we're asking Mahindra to try and contact his relatives
28:40or for members of the public to keep an eye out for Mahindra Daniel
28:45in the Valencia area in particular,
28:50although he lives in the Comoto district.
28:53And then again we have Navarro Riley, 78.
28:59Dementia, Perseverance, Cuba.
29:01And that's the third reason why we're heading to Cuba
29:03after this program.
29:05That's just the family.
29:07See if we can get some CCTV footage as to where he was last seen.
29:13Because that's the information I got coming up.
29:15And as we wrap up March, Mark, we have a 69-year-old report
29:21that was just posted off our page.
29:23I can't give you his name, but he's from the Sandy Grande district.
29:28And again, we're looking at the elderly folks.
29:30Those who's mental health.
29:31I think the police also sent out a release to me about him.
29:34On the Sandy Grande district.
29:35If memory serves me right, I saw something.
29:37So that just went up on our page.
29:39I don't have a history with me here today.
29:42So mental health and aging disorders with respect to the elderly,
29:47they form a great part of missing persons in Trinidad and Tobago.

32:27Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
32:28I'm your host, Mark Bassan,
32:30joined today by Captain Valens Rambarat
32:32of the Hunter Search and Rescue Team.
32:34As we continue our segment of Voice of the People,
32:38let's take a look.
32:56Mr. West, have you ever been a victim of crime in this country?
33:02Not personally, but the house that I live in,
33:04we were victims of crime.
33:07They broke in.
33:08They stole money from my daughter that she had there.
33:13So some money and things too.
33:15Called the Carnage Police Station,
33:16up to this day, they ain't come.
33:18And that happened at least a year and a half to two years ago.
33:24So what does that say?
33:27You tell me.
33:29And we live in about five minutes drive away from the station.
33:34What are your thoughts on the crime situation in Trinidad?
33:36It's bad.
33:38It's bad.
33:39Other than that incident, I haven't personally been affected by it, but it's bad.
33:44It's bad.
33:44There are a lot of people afraid to come out now
33:48because they don't know what will happen, especially in the night.
33:50Do you feel safe at home when they come out to lime, when they come out to do their business?
34:11Relatively, I do feel safe here.
34:14They say if you have no cocaine, they'll look for you.
34:19Have you changed the way that you do things in terms of,
34:22you know, in terms of your hours?
34:27Well, one of the things I do sometimes, especially if I'm traveling late,
34:32I don't drop out the same place all the time.
34:34I try to mix it up, drop lower down, drop higher up,
34:39drop closer to home.
34:40It depends.
34:40Depends on the situation.
34:41Depends on how I feel.
34:44Do you believe there's a connection between crime and poverty?
34:51Hard to answer.
34:54Hard to answer.
34:56Because we hear people in these so-called depressed areas always,
35:02they complain about poverty and a lot of times we see they're involved in crime.
35:05But we have these Venezuelans coming here and they're finding jobs.
35:11They're working.
35:13So to me, poverty is a matter of choice.
35:17In your opinion, what makes a person want to become a criminal?
35:20Now, I wouldn't know.
35:22Because I'm afraid of police.
35:24I'm afraid of jail.
35:25So I wouldn't know.
35:27You know, don't laugh now.
35:29How would you rate the performance of the Trinidad and Tobago police service
35:33as it pertains to the crime situation in this country?
35:35Well, you see, I don't know what you'd stick to.
35:41You certainly rate them.
35:43What would you rate them against?
35:45If the police are too forceful,
35:48and we see people being murdered,
35:50they're blocking the road, they're burning tires,
35:52they're doing all kinds of things.
35:55People dying every day.
35:56Nobody is blocking the road.
35:57So I don't know.
35:58So the police have hands halfway tied.
36:01And then we, as the public too,
36:03I think we need to be more vigilant and watch each other's back.
36:06It's a must.
36:08We have more eyes on the police out here.
36:12But nobody sees anything unless it happens to them.
36:16If you see something, would you say something?
36:21That depends on the situation.
36:25It depends on the situation.
36:26Could you clarify that?
36:28If I see something happening,
36:30and the person who perpetrated the crime,
36:32I know that person.
36:34If I can't help it being done,
36:41it's difficult now knowing the person to point them out
36:44because I would become a target now too.
36:49And too often we hear about people going in front of the courts
36:53and then they're coming back out.
36:54Two, three weeks time sometimes they're seeing them.
36:56To do the same thing they get locked up for.
37:00So while the police may try to do their job,
37:03efficiently,
37:04what about the system?
37:06The judiciary and things like that,
37:08what about that system?
37:08That needs to fix too.
37:10Justice denied too.
37:12Delayed is also justice denied.
37:14We have people sitting down in courts for years
37:16and some they die and the case has fully gone through too.
37:26Forget crime.
37:27Look for a job.
37:28Look for a trade.
37:29Look for sports.
37:31Forget that.
37:32Forget crime.
37:33There's no future in crime.
37:34It's short lived.
37:37And if you don't hurt somebody in committing a crime,
37:42you could be hurt committing a crime too.
37:44And then when you get hurt,
37:45your family get hurt too and it's extended.
37:50Crime doesn't pay.
37:54Forget crime.
37:55Young men out there,
37:57forget crime.
37:58Find something constructive to do, yes?
38:00Yeah, very intelligent gentleman.
38:02And he articulated,
38:03he listened to your question
38:06and I thought he was very articulate in answering.
38:11He understands the situation with respect to reporting crime.
38:14You ask him about the fact,
38:18whether in fact poverty is linked to crime.
38:21And he said quite clearly,
38:23there are choices out there.
38:25There are opportunities out there.
38:26And there's absolutely no reason why some family
38:31or someone in Trinidad should even be considered poor.
38:36There are lots of opportunities.
38:38He said the Venezuelans are coming
38:40and they're finding jobs.
38:44I did make the point on the program,
38:45we're dealing with a group of young men
38:47who probably have chosen that this is the way of life
38:52they want.
38:53They don't care for their life.
38:54They're willing to lose it.
38:56Just to continue that way of life.
38:59And that's a fact.
39:01It's difficult to reach them.
39:04We meet them all the time, Mark.
39:06We meet them all the time.
39:08These guys are very difficult to reach.
39:12Yeah, well, we are hopeful
39:13and we all remain optimistic
39:15that those young men out there can find something viable.
39:18I'm sure a lot of them are very talented.
39:20You know, they have talent.
39:22Well, they come from these hotspot areas
39:27because those areas provided needs and wants.
39:33And because there were needs, they became creative.
39:37The steel band movement was born out of Port of Spain.
39:41A lot of tradesmen and artisans came out of Port of Spain
39:48district.
39:48A lot of craft persons came out.
39:51And even if they didn't have a proper education,
39:54they found a way to make it.
39:58So young men, keep at it, of course,
40:00and try to find your talent outside of crime.
40:03All right, we'll take a short break
40:05and we'll be back with your calls.
40:06Stay with us.

42:32Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
42:33I'm your host, Mark Bassan,
42:35joined today by Captain Valens Rambarad
42:37from the Hunter's Search and Rescue Team.
42:39We were speaking about crime does not pay,
42:42and unfortunately, a young man lost his life
42:45this morning in the Tobago area,
42:4824 years of age, Emmanuel Daniel.
42:51Now, police responded to a call in the Easterfield Road,
42:55and they found him dead in the street.
42:58Now, police responded to a call in the Easterfield Road in Mason Hall.
43:04Apparently, this gentleman was brandishing a mini Uzi gun.
43:10There was some type of confrontation between the police
43:14and the individual there
43:16that led to him being shot and killed
43:18this morning around 7 a.m. by police officers in Tobago.
43:22Yeah, and the type of weapon he was brandishing
43:25was a semi-automatic weapon.
43:29And again, Mark, 24 years old,
43:32we've lost a young Tobagonian gentleman.
43:36And if you know the Mason Hall area,
43:39I know it well,
43:41you don't expect that type of activity
43:44in the Mason Hall area that's like rural Tobago.
43:47And it's rather unfortunate.
43:49But then, if you're looking at what happened
43:52with murders in 2024 in Tobago,
43:55we've not seen that trend continuing into 2025.
43:59It means that the police is doing work in Tobago
44:03and keeping things under control.
44:05Because I saw a drug bust a couple of days ago.
44:09But I know when the murder rate had spiked
44:12in the middle of 2024 in Tobago,
44:15they had a change of leadership.
44:18I think Mr. Eli went across there,
44:20as well as ASP Sibero.
44:22Good afternoon to you guys.
44:23Good evening, sorry.
44:24And I know since then,
44:27the count has dipped considerably
44:29because they've been able to get stranglehold
44:32in those areas where there are gang-related activity
44:34and so on.
44:35Yes, and I think they're doing a fine job in Tobago.
44:40I think the population was expecting that change
44:44in management to be affected.
44:46And when it was affected,
44:49we began to see changes in Tobago.
44:51Yes, and shifting gears, of course,
44:54we're moving to a story
44:56where there was even a narrow escape
44:58for a number of residents in the Guayaguayari...
45:02Guaracara.
45:03Guaracara, sorry, Tabakit Road area,
45:06after a 10-wheeler truck lost control
45:09and plowed into two homes there this morning.
45:13Now, luckily, there was nobody in that part of the homes
45:17when the truck crashed into...
45:20And I mean, it's concrete structure,
45:22concrete homes, right?
45:25We understand that the driver,
45:2670-year-old man, was hurt,
45:30but is alive and in stable condition.
45:34And surely, you know, these trucks,
45:36you have to also look at the wear and tear.
45:39You have to check this here
45:40and show that these trucks are supposed to be inspected.
45:44Roadworthy.
45:44Yeah.
45:46So, I mean, we looked at some other footage
45:49that we saw of the gentle man
45:51being taken out of this truck.
45:54Look at the front of this vehicle,
45:56smashed in after colliding with those two homes there.
46:02And he was pinned behind the wheel.
46:04Behind the wheel.
46:05And they had to seek assistance.
46:08Residents came to his assistance.
46:10Look at the destruction.
46:12Well, first of all, he's lucky to escape with his life.
46:16I think he has a broken leg and some gash on his forehead.
46:20But look at the damage here.
46:21And you could know that those residents,
46:25if you had anybody in those houses,
46:27they all escaped.
46:28So thank God it ended without loss of life.
46:32But one thing about these trucks,
46:35Mark, I think, if it's loss of brakes,
46:38sometimes the drivers try to bank the trucks
46:42to stop the vehicles.
46:45So I'm not too sure if this is what happened.
46:48And then you're looking at a 70-year-old
46:51driving a 10-wheeler.
46:52We're not sure if the 10-wheeler is qualified
46:55to drive on that road.
46:56They would have been hauling boulders
46:58from the Guadalcanal Quarry.
47:01So I suppose 10-wheelers could have been
47:03I suppose 10-wheelers could have been.
47:05Yes, you're seeing some aggregates there,
47:07back of the truck.
47:09But we are thankful that, you know,
47:11I know that the driver was hurt,
47:13but there was nobody in those homes.
47:17Luckily, in that area,
47:18when the truck smashed into the homes,
47:21it might have been much worse.
47:23Yeah, it would have been much worse.
47:25Thankfully, no one lost their life in this incident.
47:30So there was also another accident
47:32in the Omero area this weekend here,
47:36involving at least two vehicles, I think.
47:40Another truck, it looks like here,
47:42you'll see it in a minute,
47:43or a small van of some sort.
47:46And this is a truck.
47:49It seems that, you know,
47:51we've seen a lot of accidents happening
47:53during the day, you know,
47:56over the last month, month and a half.
47:59Some very bad, of course.
48:01And, you know, we have to also,
48:03people need to be mindful of the speed,
48:06and especially when you're in traffic.
48:08And at those busy times of the day,
48:10it looks like maybe like 11, 12 in the day,
48:14sometimes, and you're driving behind vehicles,
48:18you have to be able to...
48:19You have to be careful, yeah.
48:22I think I've made a point on this program.
48:24I am seeing a lot of accidents
48:25involving trucks and vans,
48:27and the distribution industry,
48:31the trucks hauling their aggregate,
48:33and some of these guys may have timelines
48:36to deliver and get to places quickly.
48:39And then we see a lot of accidents
48:42with the four by four vehicles as well.
48:44And so they have to exercise due caution
48:48and attention,
48:49and those who drive in the distribution vehicles,
48:52they have to make sure that their vehicles
48:53are roadworthy and working well.
48:56And they cannot be speeding
48:58and breaking the speed limits,
49:00and they have to pay attention to as well.
49:02Definitely.
49:03All right.
49:03We have a caller on the line.
49:04Caller, good evening.
49:06Yes, sir.
49:07Good evening.
49:07How are you today?
49:08I'm all right.
49:09How are you doing?
49:10Yes, I'm okay.
49:14Good evening to the studio people,
49:16and good evening to everybody who's watching.
49:20Good evening to Canada.
49:21I just would like to comment on the street.
49:28When you go on the street and do the interviews,
49:30and I find plenty of people not commenting
49:33on the reality that poverty and crime
49:40has a lot of hand in hand going on with it.
49:44And that's a problem where people,
49:48you know, they deny a lot.
49:49I really feel that people should realize
49:52what is happening.
49:54Secondly, the same questions you asked
49:56about the police officers,
49:59I would like to be able to support
50:01Trinidad and Tobago Police Service
50:03because, I mean, they're out there
50:06putting life and limb on the line
50:08to try to protect people.
50:09But at the same time,
50:11there's a lot of issues
50:14within the police service
50:15that really, really need to get ironed out.
50:18And, I mean, I'm quite sure
50:19a lot of people talk about it,
50:21but that is one of the biggest problems,
50:24I think, with the police service
50:26and the ability for people
50:29to get behind the support.
50:31And like, when you ask the gentleman
50:33about reporting our crimes,
50:35everybody so far say the same thing.
50:38I'm not saying here no evil, see no evil.
50:40I'm not saying according to the circumstances,
50:43you know, it's just,
50:45we need to be able to get
50:47the police over to the point
50:48where somebody really feel that way
50:51about coming to the police for assistance
50:53and giving assistance
50:55because we really need to try
50:57and take back things away
50:59from the criminals
51:00and how criminality works
51:02and evolves with younger ones
51:04in the community.
51:08All right, Kola,
51:09we really appreciate your comments
51:10and we're going to respond after the break.
51:12Stay with us.
51:18Guess what, everyone?
51:27Today on our class trip
51:28to the Nature Seekers Center,
51:29we saw amazing animals
51:31and learned all about their solar BB system.
51:33That's wonderful, Dolly.
51:34Well, come and tell us more.
51:37They showed us how solar power works
51:38and how it's helping them save money
51:40and the environment.
51:41Wait, wait, you said save money
51:44and we get to save the planet too?
51:46That sounds like something
51:47we should look into, sweetie.
51:48So you have any more pictures?
51:49Yeah.
51:51Solar power to the people.
52:17Thank you, members of the media.

53:59Welcome back to Beyond the Tape,
54:12I'm your host Mark Bassan
54:13joined today by Captain Valence Ramarad
54:15of the Hunter Search and Rescue Team
54:17and before the break I called up Colleen
54:19and he spoke about our segment
54:20The Voice of the People
54:22and of course he spoke about
54:24two pressing things you know
54:25he spoke about crime and poverty
54:27and of course the police
54:28and the inability to do certain things
54:30because there are certain internal issues
54:32that they are also faced with
54:34and that trust and accountability
54:36by the public
54:38has waned considerably
54:39over the last couple of months
54:41or even the last year or two.
54:43Mark I was just thinking during the break
54:46about the poverty and crime right
54:48and it just struck me
54:50that I believe the poorest class
54:53in Trinidad and Tobago
54:55is that group of single mothers
54:59who are not supported by fathers
55:02and they have to work
55:04and hold on three and four jobs a day
55:06to make ends meet
55:08and to support their children
55:11and therefore if poverty was linked to crime
55:14all these single women
55:15or the majority of them
55:17would have chosen crime.
55:20These mothers go out there
55:23and they work hard to provide
55:24for their families.
55:26The issue of crime is really simply
55:30because the young men
55:33should have chosen the block
55:35they've chosen to use marijuana
55:38play with guns
55:40and use alcohol and other drugs
55:43and that's a way of life
55:45from morning till in the evening
55:48and the second point he made
55:50is about the trust
55:52between the citizens
55:53and the police service
55:55is correct.
55:56There exists this distrust
55:58with the police service
56:00I think this has been on the improve
56:05but it's something
56:06that the police service has to work on.
56:07They have to step up
56:12and they have the
56:13Professional Bureau of Standards
56:15they have to have a lot of covert operations
56:18within the service
56:19to keep an eye on their officers
56:22and I think there are avenues now
56:25for persons to report crime
56:28the 800 tips
56:30the 999
56:32the 555
56:33you don't have to give your name
56:34but you know there are avenues
56:36so that you could be protected
56:37that your information you give
56:38could be protected
56:39and you could protect yourself
56:41but the police needs
56:42the assistance of the population
56:44to solve crime.
56:46Yes most certainly
56:46and I want to salute
56:48all those single mothers out there
56:50that really hold it down for their children
56:53and of course
56:53they are true heroes
56:55but if you are seeing your mother
56:56sacrificing and working
56:57two and three or four jobs
56:59and you as a young man
57:01or even a young woman
57:02decide to go out
57:03and do something outside of that
57:04then of course you know
57:06you should know better
57:07that mother sacrificed for you.
57:09All right so remember
57:11we run tonight at 11 o'clock
57:13sorry 11 30
