Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Gender and Child Affairs Ayanna Webster-Roy is encouraging people to make use of crime stoppers as the country deals with the increasing number of violent crimes affecting several families .

She spoke at a Crime Stoppers rally on Saturday. More in this Elizabeth Williams report.

00:00As government, we are trying to implement, for the first time in Trinidad and Tobago,
00:05an action plan based on women, peace, and security, using women and the principles around
00:12women, peace, and security to address gang and gun violence in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:17Mrs. Ayanna Webster-Roy spoke on Saturday as the Crime Stoppers team held a rally throughout
00:23Tobago, educating the population about making reports to Crime Stoppers.
00:28Director of Crime Stoppers Chris James said crime in Tobago has affected the island's
00:33economic growth.
00:35Crime has managed to seep into the communities, so we have to take back control so that every
00:42mother, father, grandparent, family member, child can rest easy.
00:47It's up to us to take back control.
00:50Crime has also affected our biggest industry, tourism.
00:54All the millions of dollars that we spend on tourism, marketing, can be wasted with
00:59one or two incidents of crime.
01:01With $28 million in stolen property recovered through Crime Stoppers, Mr. James is encouraging
01:08citizens to report crime anonymously through 800 tips.
01:14Over the last 25 years, 1,723 people have been arrested because of tips through Crime
01:21Stoppers.
01:24Stolen property recovered, over $28 million worth of stolen property have been recovered
01:30because of Crime Stoppers.
01:33Narcotics seized, over $300 million, narcotics, value of narcotics recovered.
01:41Firearms, 426 firearms have been recovered.
