Transcript
00:00 We have had three parents who were murdered.
00:05 Their students are presently coming to the Patients' Health Government Primary School.
00:10 They are affected by the violence.
00:12 We have had the school being broken into.
00:15 We have had the school being vandalized.
00:17 We have had money stolen here.
00:19 And we definitely want to make a stand to say enough is enough.
00:23 And we don't want violence to become a part of the Patients' Health Community
00:27 nor the community of the Patients' Health Government Primary School.
00:30 Senior teacher Isabel Turner-Toby said the safety of Tobago's children is paramount.
00:37 The no-violence walkathon throughout the communities of Patients' Hill and Signal Hill
00:42 took place on Wednesday morning as the village has been shaken by acts of violence,
00:47 including murder and suicides.
00:50 The school is supposed to be a safe place.
00:53 And if the community is not safe, it means that the children will not be safe.
00:57 They will not be feeling safe coming to school.
01:00 So hence the reason for today's walk.
01:02 Area representative for Signal Hill Patients' Hill Nigel Tate said
01:06 as a past pupil of the school, the walk is not only for Tobago but Trinidad as well.
01:12 And when making a walk, to ask the person involved in crime to stop,
01:20 it's all about stopping, right?
01:22 The crime is getting out of hand and we need to stop it,
01:25 especially gun violence because as you all know,
01:28 the first murder took place in Patients' Hill.
01:31 That was on the 1st of January.
01:34 And then we had another murder again right across Signal Hill also, right?
01:38 And we cannot take it no more.
01:41 PTA Public Relations Officer Rion George said the walk is a symbolic one for the school
01:48 as a means of taking a stand against this negative trend
01:53 and to bring awareness to these troubling issues.
01:56 It's not just the murders here.
01:58 The lady that was found hog-tied and burnt as well late last year,
02:02 she was a parent of children at our school.
02:05 The murder victim on the 1st of January, he was a relative of students at the school
02:11 and also the gentleman who was murdered after in Signal Hill.
02:15 Another person related to students of the school.
02:19 So in addition to that, we have break-ins in the community, we have fights,
02:23 we have all sorts of different types of violence.
02:25 So this is our way to go throughout the community and say no to violence all entirely.
02:30 Elizabeth Williams, TV6 News.
