As the country's murder toll approaches one hundred, concerns about crime remain high—even after multiple states of emergency. One Member of Parliament is now questioning whether those measures are working.

00:15I am very concerned about the state of crime in the country.
00:20I think any objective analysis will confidently conclude that the state of emergency has not
00:28been a success.
00:30I have said before, and I have said it again, that this government does not seem to have
00:36any real plan.
00:39Opposition MP Keith Scotland says the underlying issues driving crime have not been addressed,
00:45offering what he described as a fair and objective assessment.
00:49In 2020, if I was not a good year for murders in Trinidad, that's when the people's national
00:56movement was in power, that has to be said, and on the other hand, now it's a united congress
01:01who's been in power.
01:02They guaranteed during the election campaign that crime would be reduced, and it's not
01:09being reduced.
01:18I think that it will reduce the prison population, and the issue with the prison population really
01:24is recidivism, isn't it?
01:26Because people going to prison are sometimes on not major charges, but because of the delays
01:34in the system, problems in getting bail, they go in soft criminals, and the inculcation
01:40in the prison, they come out hard criminals, and when they come out with a record, there
01:45is little, there are little opportunities for them, and then they turn to a life of crime.
02:17Well, that is an issue for the RRCB, the recognition board, that has nothing to do with the people's
02:23national movement, in my respect for people.
02:25That's right.
