00:00The People's Roundtable report coming from the Movement for Social Justice
00:04Civil Society Crime Summit has been delivered to a number of government
00:08ministers holding portfolios of finance, planning and development, education,
00:14national security, as well as the Attorney General. The Commissioner of
00:19Police and the Chief Justice have also received a copy. The MSJ says the nation
00:24is in crisis and there is fear all around.
00:54Limited view of what has to be done to deal with crime and violence. MSJ leader
01:00David Abdulla says those causes surround the economic and social structures of
01:05the country. Institutions such as education, way in which the police
01:10function, the prisons and so much more. And we feel that unless those
01:15things are tackled, then 10 years from now we will not be talking about 600
01:21plus murders a year. We'll be talking about 1200 murders a year. And there is
01:26a feeling that business people can do more. What we would have liked to have
01:31heard from you is what we will do to create decent jobs for our citizens, not
01:39exploit workers to maximize profits for your pockets. The report was compiled
01:44through discourse with over 100 participants and 30 civil society groups.
01:48Founder of the Artists Coalition of TNT, Rubidari Victor says one of the major
01:54issues to be fixed is remand yard and by extension the judicial process. A lot of
02:00the violence we see in the society is because people have lost faith in the
02:04judicial system. So people taking justice into their own hands. The MSJ
02:09plans to deliver more copies of the report a later own. Alicia Boucher, TV 6
