Fresh from Thursday's National Security Council meeting, Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher reveals strategies to be implemented to deal with a rise in three areas of serious crime plaguing the country.


She also sends a message to illegal immigrants contributing to crime.

00:00It is well known to the national community that we are pressed as a nation with severe
00:09levels of criminal activity.
00:12A rise in homicides, home invasions and now extortion being among the most concerning.
00:18Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hines, stating based on his information, 11 people
00:24were killed over the past 48 hours, including nationals and non-nationals.
00:29The minister expressing understanding over the fear and trauma the killings can cause
00:33makes this admission.
00:35We understand equally that you the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are entitled to expect
00:44the law enforcement platform in Trinidad and Tobago, mandated under the law, sworn and
00:53paid for those purposes, to deal with these issues, to stand in the gap to protect you
01:00the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago from the criminals and their criminal onslaught.
01:07It was the reason behind a meeting of the National Security Council on Thursday, coming
01:11out of which Police Commissioner Oloheo Christopher says action is being taken, including the
01:16focus on retrieving illegal firearms.
01:20To stem the spate of homicides, from an operational perspective, we have intensified special operations.
01:30We are using all the resources available to us.
01:36So we have begun the communication and the conversation with other stakeholders to increase,
01:46to work with us, to increase our visibility.
01:49As for whether that means increasing roadblocks and ticketing motorists for offences under
01:54the Road Traffic Act.
01:56Our operations are not focusing on the removal of things.
02:00Our operations are focusing on those prolific offenders who we know.
02:05We are focusing on our gangs, our gang members, our gang leaders, because they are the ones
02:11who are responsible for the homicides.
02:16So we'll be focusing on them.
02:18But it will of course entail road operations, road searches.
02:24She states that around 55% of murders in the country are related to gang or drug activity.
02:30As it pertains to home invasions, the Topka points to educating the public.
02:35We have introduced the Eagle Eye Project, which has been disseminated also in other
02:40divisions other than Tunapuna.
02:43The Commissioner says there is a proliferation of women and migrants in criminal activity.
02:49We want to speak to the illegal migrants to let them know that we will be coming after
02:57them in our bars, with all the illicit activities, we'll be coming after them.
