WPC Quianna Mahabir's condition continues to improve as she remains warded at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. Police sources said that the 30-year-old law enforcement officer who was shot in the head and chest on Tuesday morning outside her home in Caroni, was visited by friends and colleagues on Wednesday and was said to be doing noticeably better.

Transcript
00:00Mahabir had been part of an all-female contingent representing the Trinidad and Tobago Police
00:05Service Band in the Bahamas and the United States.
00:08She had returned to the country on Tuesday morning and was shot outside her home shortly
00:12after being picked up at the Piaco International Airport.
00:16In a news release issued on Tuesday, Kelly Village and Warrnaville Councillor Kamala
00:20Fagu noted that the shooting had left residents shocked and it demonstrated that there was
00:26a need for enhanced security measures in the community.
00:29She said,
00:30"...our citizens are growing increasingly fearful for their security and we cannot afford
00:36to delay.
00:37The protection and peace of mind of our residents must be a priority."
00:41She also called on the TTPS to fulfill a promise of a police post in the community, saying,
00:47"...this incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced security measures in our
00:52area.
00:53I am once again calling on the TTPS to fulfill their promise of establishing a police post
00:57in Kelly Village."
01:00Carine East, Member of Parliament, Dr. Richard Cicharan also made a similar call for a police
01:04post and for more CCTV cameras to be installed in the community.
01:09Furthermore, Dr. Cicharan has asked that police target known hotspot areas where drugs and
01:14other forms of organized crime operate.
01:18He said there have been empty promises even as crime has become more prevalent and deadly,
01:23with several persons being killed or maimed.
01:26He added that while all of Trinidad and Tobago was now technically a criminal war zone, the
01:31tightly knitted communities of Carine East are teeming with criminals who do not fear
01:36law enforcement.
01:39He said there are also reports in the public domain of businessmen being extorted for protection
01:43money from criminal elements in the community, resulting in business activity being curtailed,
01:49causing a reduction in employment in what he says is an already stagnant economy.
01:55Dr. Cicharan said he is pleading with the government to treat crime with the urgency
01:59and critical attention it deserves.
