00:00The police have revealed that its legal team is currently reviewing how best to
00:04enact the gun amnesty as outlined in the current state of emergency regulations.
00:09Assistant Commissioner of Police Richard Smith told the media conference today
00:13that this is being done under the supervision of Senior Counsel Gilbert
00:17Peterson. Under the regulations, I believe it's section 13, there is mention of
00:22amnesty. However, our legal team which is headed by Mr. Gilbert Peterson, they are
00:27in fact engaged in clarifying that clause. The media was also told
00:32today that police have held 360 of the targeted 503 priority offenders whom
00:38they have gone after so far under the current state of emergency. The
00:42statistics were given by Deputy Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin
00:46who said that 2,495 searches were conducted and resulted in the seizure
00:52of 22 firearms, 818 rounds of assorted ammunition and an estimated 84.5
00:59kilograms in drugs. Additionally, there have been 321 traffic operations which
01:05resulted in 951 traffic offenses being detected. The murder toll for 2025 as of
01:13this evening stands at 4. The comparative for the same period in 2023 was 18. We
01:19recognize that our officers are outside there and our divisional commanders, they
01:27are at work ensuring that we continue to have that level of law and order, that
01:36level of safety in our nation. DCP Benjamin also thanked the officers who
01:41have been working non-stop and have been called out to duty during this period. He
01:46also thanked members of the public for working with the TTPS and encouraged
01:50them to continue. To this point we are thankful for all that has been
01:55accomplished but nevertheless we remain focused in terms of what we want to
02:00accomplish during this state of emergency where we are seeking to ensure
02:07as we seek to bring to justice persons that are found committing offenses.
02:14However, ACP Richard Smith made a public call for police officers who are
02:19currently on leave to report for duty. He noted that when the state of emergency
02:24was announced on December 30th, officers were called out to resume duties.
02:28However, many have not heeded the instructions. So I want to thank the
02:33officers who came out thus far and for the officers who have not come out, you
02:37know messages will be sent to you but I'm making a call to you all and appeal
02:41to you all come out we will meet you at police administration come out as early
02:46as today tomorrow you know as soon as you get this message we want you to come
02:49out because we need your assistance we need all hands on deck as we continue to
02:54fight against the scourge of criminality taking place. Smith noted that those who
02:59did not unless there were medical reasons may face disciplinary action. So
03:05if they do not come out we have our disciplinary process by which we would
03:09be able to proceed against them and if found wanting then we will have
03:14probably charges laid against them.
