The Demerit Point System is under review which could result in some intervention for drivers who are on the verge of having their licence suspended. This from Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan, who is putting motorists on notice that they'll soon have to deal with the issue of illegal tint.
00:00When road deaths were over the 216 marker in the country, the actual number of accidents and those who were left gravely injured from those accidents were never factored into the statistics.
00:12But Transport Minister Rohun Sinanan says there could have been thousands of accidents and a lot of people affected at that time.
00:19Changing the driving culture, he maintains, was the purpose behind the demerit point system and not to punish the driving population.
00:27According to Sinanan, the demerit point system is reviewed annually, which in the past resulted in the points being removed for a blown headlight or taillight.
00:57Sinanan says this is one of several things being looked at as the aim remains to change the mindset on the nation's roads.
01:14He hints at it being very possible, stating that some of the same motorists in this country drive differently when they're abroad.
01:22The minister mentions one of the surveys conducted by his ministry at a traffic light by the Hyatt Regency in 2020.
01:30January to June 27th, just that one traffic light, there were 24,581 violations at one traffic light.
01:42That is people breaking that traffic light right outside there. You could imagine what happens around Trinidad.
01:49Sinanan says the ministry must deal with that problem despite the naysayers, including politicians and heads of other organizations.
01:57Telling us that we are advantaging people, I think there's one reason for that. None of them have lost any family to road fatalities.
02:06Because if they had, they would understand that one single accident could disrupt an entire family.
02:14The ministry plans to roll out a tint regulation soon, which according to Sinanan, is more of a security measure that would assist law enforcement and the traveling public.
02:24I expect to get more pushback on that once that starts to roll out, but we are prepared for the fight.
02:31Sinanan states that last month, the ministry began rolling out new driving regulations that are more up to date with the present system.
