00:00TTPS Road Safety Coordinator Sergeant Brent Batson tells us that drunk driving, not using seatbelts and speeding remain a major cause of road deaths in this country.
00:11When you tie speed into where occupants are not wearing seatbelts, that's a recipe for disaster as well.
00:17So you find that the blunt force trauma injuries that a lot of the occupants receive are very severe.
00:23And it's what we call an uneven distribution of force across the human body as compared to where belted occupants, you know, have a safer distribution of energy across the body.
00:35We also have the issue of DUI, alcoholism. So it's that trifecta really inside that's happening into, unfortunately, the carnival on the Tobago side and then us going into Christmas.
00:49Batson adds the police service will soon have the added benefits of new technology to help enforce road safety laws.
00:55New high tech equipment coming in. I don't know overstep where we're expected to deploy from, but I would say before the end of the year, they should be on the road.
01:05It's pretty advanced in the stage of acquisition. Of course, when we get it, we have the training and so forth before the distribution.
01:14So we're excited about that. And that is some nice high tech stuff, wireless stuff, you know, so it makes the system more efficient.
01:22He laments that oftentimes when motorists are held up for speeding under the influence, they are well beyond the alcohol limit by as much as three or four times.
01:31So we're also seeing high readings of when we're doing breathalyzer exercise and we do get drivers excessive, you know, three times the legal limit of thirty five micrograms.
01:43And for you drivers who love to speed and break the traffic light, Sgt. Batson have this to see.
01:49Speed camera. And so Minister Sinan mentioned that it has been earmarked certain intersections.
01:57They've already been testing it and so far with great success with integration.
02:01So with the with the speed cameras and the red light camera enforcement system, you will now get these citations in the mail and these violations will now be dealt with.
02:16Well, if you contest it in the court, of course, but more importantly, it goes to the registered owner.
02:21Pedestrians, you are not left out. Sgt. Batson is advising you to always be alert and exercise vigilance on the road.
