The Transport Commissioner says heavily-tinted vehicles are a major concern for law enforcement because when officers approach such a vehicle, they have no idea of the threat they could be facing.

It is for this and other reasons that the Ministries of National Security and Transport have joined forces to implement the use of tint measuring devices by Licensing Officers and the Police.

However, the Minister of Transport says the motoring public has a six week window to ensure their vehicles are in line with the now, four year old, tint regulations

00:00The tint is not 5% it's like zero right now in some vehicles and as an
00:05enforcement officer when you stand there you don't know what is facing you and I
00:10have serious concerns with that as Transport Commissioner. The concerns of
00:15those in law enforcement including licensing officers expressed on their
00:19behalf by the Transport Commissioner on Monday. We all have legitimate reasons
00:25for tinting our vehicles. One is for glare reduction, heat control, medical
00:31reasons, security reason, aesthetics and there are reasons for tinting our
00:37vehicles. I don't want my vehicle not tinted and I am the Commissioner. The
00:41Transport Commissioner urged the population to be mindful of the dangers
00:45of tint. My biggest concern is safety for enforcement officers. We are on the
00:51ground in Tobago right now and I have major concerns with what I'm seeing
00:55across there with tint. The Transport Commissioner was speaking during
00:59the launch of the windscreen and window tint regulations 2020 at the National
01:04Security Ministry's headquarters in Port of Spain. The concerns he expressed about
01:09heavily tinted vehicles were echoed by other speakers at the launch including
01:13National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hines. Our CCTV platform more generally
01:19is also aimed at addressing these issues. However, this measure will allow
01:26law enforcement agencies to proactively and easily inspect vehicles enhancing
01:33their capacity to maintain public safety. The National Security Ministry and the
01:38Works and Transport Ministry have joined the forces to introduce the use of
01:42special tint measuring devices.
02:13A demonstration video was shown during the launch.
02:28The Works and Transport Minister said the law regarding tint on the windows of
02:32vehicles had been in place for the past four years but had been put on hold due
02:37to the COVID pandemic. We are on a campaign now which will probably run for
02:42the next six weeks to again inform the population what is the law in Trinidad
02:48and Tobago as it stands. And where can people go to ensure that the tint on the
02:52windows of their vehicles will not attract a fixed penalty notice? Let me
02:57just say this because I don't want a floodgating licensing, right? So
03:00definitely we are saying you have the tint shops, you also have the inspection
03:06stations. We have recognized and through observations, through surveillance, they do
03:11have the approved devices which they should be able to lend that level of
03:15assistance. So not just the inspection garages, you also have the tint shops. You
03:19can visit them. The police commissioner also spoke about the tint measuring
03:23devices that law enforcement shall be using. We have already trained 200
03:29officers and we are focusing on training additional officers in the use of the
03:36device. The transport commissioner said 90% of licensing officers have been
03:41trained to use the tint measuring devices. Jewel Brown TV six news
