00:00As the carnival draws closer and festivities continue, the police service is intensifying
00:07its road safety campaign, emphasizing the dangers of reckless driving and alcohol consumption.
00:14On Wednesday, police road safety officer Brent Batson warned about the dangers of driving
00:19while intoxicated.
00:21Especially with the price of these all-inclusive, exclusive, you know, it's expensive as you
00:30know.
00:31What happens is that, you know, persons try to maximize.
00:34They try to bust the bar.
00:35Well, they try to at least make back their money.
00:38And to do that, you have to make sure you have a designated driver.
00:41Let's just start there.
00:42Or somebody picking you up alternative transport.
00:45There's no way you're going to achieve that, all right, and enjoy yourself and then still
00:49have to operate your motor vehicle.
00:51He notes the vehicle accident on the eastbound lane of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway earlier
00:56today, where the driver appeared to have lost both his legs.
01:01He again appeals to drivers to obey the road rules, avoid speeding, and use safety apparatus.
01:08The damage suggests extremely high rate of speed, and worse yet, the injury sustained
01:14by both the driver and the front seat passenger also suggests lack of seat belt use.
01:20I mean, there were severe injuries.
01:22So as you correctly said, the lower extremities, the driver lost his both feet, you know, below
01:29the knee.
01:31Officer Batson is pleading with the public to obey traffic laws, remain alert, and to
01:35prioritize safety.
01:37When these things circulate online, Marlon, what disturbs us is that people, I don't know
01:44if they just get numb to it and they say, hmm, you know, boy, our next accident again,
01:48that could be you.
01:50And the choices that led to this incident can be quickly similarly created with poor
01:59driving decisions.
02:00You can't blame traffic.
02:01There's no traffic on the highway three hours in the morning, all right, so it's a loss
02:07of control situation.
02:09Officer Batson says the TTPS traffic enforcement plan has already been started.
02:15He also advises motorists that if you are caught in a stop and search operation, it
02:20is better to comply than to protest.
02:22Further, he warns that persons should not be traveling with weapons like machetes in
02:28their cars.
02:29Batson says every decision behind the wheel matters, not only for the driver, but for
02:35all road users.
