00:00Car thieves went on a rampage this week, stealing at least six vehicles in 24 hours in South and East Trinidad.

00:18In the Gasparillo Police District, a 28-year-old pharmacist discovered a dark gray Kia Cerato, valued at $103,000, missing.
00:28The vehicle was later found stripped in San Juan.
00:32In Valencia, a silver Nissan B-14, valued at $10,000, was reported stolen from an open yard at Paradise Lane.
00:40Meantime, in the Tunapuna Police District, a white Nissan Tida, valued at $35,000, was stolen in Monte Grande, St. Augustine, and later recovered damaged at Venus Drive in Mucoya.
00:52While in Arima, two Nissan Tidas, valued at $35,000 each, was stolen.
01:00Former sergeant with the stolen vehicles unit, Christopher Swamba, says if the TTPS were to get to the bottom of car stealing, the police would make huge inroads in other forms of crime.
01:11And this is not a crime to take lightly.
01:14It is a serious thing.
01:15To commit a murder, you need a vehicle.
01:19To commit a larceny, you need a kidnapping, robberies, and the list goes on.
01:25Anything you want to do, you have to have mobility.
01:29And you're looking for the fastest cars that you're getting, and colors that will blend in with the regular colors.
01:38So you won't go out and steal a Tifa red car, or you'll go out to a green car.
01:42You're looking for a white or a silver, you know, that will blend in.
01:45He believes improving public trust and confidence will go a long way for the TTPS.
01:51Intelligence is very, very important.
01:54You must have proper information.
01:56How you get information is from an informant, and you have to use that information to turn it into intelligence, and the information you're coming, that you're getting from your intelligence, but you can now use it as evidence in matters.
02:16He's offering the following advice to vehicle owners.
02:19So the safest thing is to get that brakes pedal lock.
02:23The gear shifter that you have, the automatic, that people lock in, that doesn't really make sense.
02:30Another thing, if you're parking in a public car park, what you can use is the steering lock.
02:35You can use one across the steering that they sell at these parts, please.
02:39Use it across.
02:41The only way, the only way they can remove that is by cutting it.
02:45And no car thief want to spend time to alert the public that something is happening in that vehicle.
02:52Or you can use two, one, to lock the steering, and one, to lock from the steering to the foot brake.
