Join Bicycling's Matt Phillips in his garage for an episode of Tech Tuesday.
Transkrip
00:00Hey everyone, I was in my garage here, workshop, working on an aero road bike.
00:04This one's a Quintana Roo, Service Corps Studio Next, review coming soon I hope.
00:09And I was thinking about the Factor aero bike that's launching soon.
00:15I was at the Factor website and there was a countdown timer and an outline of the very distinct looking aero bike
00:21that they debuted at the Dauphiné this year.
00:24It showed up a few other places, but it is a wild looking aero hyperbike
00:30in the same category as a Conago Y1RS, Noah Fast from Ridley, and Cervelo S5.
00:38And super cool. I love this kind of stuff, but I do wonder for average riders like you and me
00:44are we going to really notice the extra aero boost?
00:47Because as the level of improvement in aero race bikes has risen,
00:59all aero race bikes used at the top level are pretty aero.
01:04So what brands have had to do is go to even more extreme lengths to extract those little, little bits of marginal gains
01:15to make their bikes still more aero.
01:19So it's like it's becoming, you have to take bigger steps to realize smaller gains now
01:24because the overall level of aerodynamic efficiency of the race bikes is so high.
01:30So this Factor is one of the wildest looking things out there.
01:34Super cool. Like I said, love to see the effort and the development.
01:39I do wonder for average riders like me who, you know, 20 miles an hour, 18 to 20 miles an hour
01:47on a lot of rides, 15 miles an hour on some rides, am I going to notice the extra handful of watts
01:55that, you know, of aero efficiency a bike like this Factor provides compared to an already pretty fast bike
02:05like a Specialized Tarmac SL8 or a Trek Madone, which, you know, is kind of like a question you have to ask yourself.
02:14Like if I'm an average rider and these bikes are, you know, have to go, are this wild looking,
02:22but not a lot faster, like probably a little bit faster, but not a lot faster,
02:28maybe not enough to even notice while you're riding it.
02:31Do you want to, you know, do you, is that, do you want to, you know, make the leap to that?
02:39If you're a fast rider, mostly averaging over 20 miles an hour, yeah, I'm sure the aero gains are totally worth it.
02:47For the rest of us, I don't know.
02:49I might stick with a more traditional looking lighter bike with less crazy integration like a Tarmac,
02:58you know, which is a very fast bike, but, you know, without the madness of the Factor and the Y1RS
03:06and all those super proprietary handlebars and stuff.
03:10So, hey, we'll, we'll, we'll see how it all goes.
03:14Speaking of aero, Scribe has a new wheel set with very distinctive aero wavy spokes.
03:19They are, however, in a twist, they're not as fast as the steel spokes offered in the cheaper wheel set.
03:31The wheel set range is called Ultra.
03:33So the one with the Alpina steel spokes is a little bit faster in the wind tunnel.
03:36The more expensive one with the wavy carbon spokes is a little slower in the wind tunnel,
03:40but it's lighter and it feels better when you ride it, the company says.
03:43The deal with the wavy carbon spokes is they narrow the gap from the average carbon spoke to one of those Alpina spokes.
03:54One of those Alpina steel bladed spokes is very fast and a carbon spoke is usually slower because it's bigger and thicker.
04:04So by kind of narrowing that gap with these wavy design spokes, it's a pretty small difference.
04:13But, so like, you're not paying as much of an aero penalty for the carbon spokes and you get lighter weight, better response and all that stuff.
04:24But if you spend less, you can get that Scribe Ultra with the steel spokes that shows up a little faster in the wind tunnel.
04:34Do you like deals?
04:35You know, and this has nothing to do with aero, so totally switching gears.
04:42Anyways, Wheel and Sprocket Outlet has a Manda ALR aluminum rim brake frame for $350.
04:50They used to be like $1,400, $1,300, which was already a pretty decent deal.
04:55Now they're $350.
04:56So if you've ever wanted a more traditional frame, build it up with mechanical, you know, build it up with scrounge up some parts and put it on a trainer for Zwift.
05:04You know, that Manda is a nice frame.
05:07I built one up a few years ago with Campy Chorus, and it was a fantastic riding frame.
05:12It uses direct mount rim brakes, so it easily clears a 30.
05:15I had some sort of, some challenge 30s on it, and it, man, it rode nicely.
05:21So, you know, check that out if you're in the market for something that's not electronic and hydraulic and carbon and everything else.
05:28And finally, you know, let's talk about bike fit.
05:34Bicycling is a big fan of proper fitting bikes.
05:38And Sinitas, which is a company that welds titanium bikes right here in the USA, right here in Durango, where I live, in fact,
05:45they're offering free custom geometry on their most popular gravel, road, and mountain bike models through the end of December.
05:55It's basically a $500 savings to get a bike that is custom fit for you.
06:01And custom geometry is two things.
06:03It's fit and it's handling.
06:05So not only can you get the bike to fit, you know, just right, you can also kind of tweak the handling towards your preferences.
06:12And then you'd have this awesome USA-made titanium forever bike that fits and handles exactly like you want, which I think is pretty sweet.
06:21So that's what I got for this Tech Tuesday.
06:24Thanks for watching, and we'll talk to you again next week.
