Everyone says AI agents will do our shopping. DoorDash just shared a reality check. 🍔🤖
On DoorDash's third-quarter 2026 earnings call on October 29, CEO Tony Xu was asked about AI agents. As reported by TechCrunch and Ars Technica on October 30:
• Xu said outside, third-party AI agents have generated only "several hundred" orders on DoorDash in total so far.
• For scale: DoorDash's own Q3 2026 results report 993 million total orders in the quarter (Ars Technica: "just shy of 1 billion").
• Xu: "My take on all things technology is you never want to fight gravity. But at the same time, you don't want to be delusional."
• He said that for a task as simple as ordering food, people still tend to come directly to DoorDash.
• DoorDash is still building for agents: its in-app Ask DoorDash assistant, a text-to-order agent, and a connector (MCP) that lets other AI tools place orders. TechCrunch reports Xu also said advertising inside agents could be an opportunity in the future.
