Google's Gemini API can now officially control a screen. ๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ๐Ÿค–

On October 30, 2026, Google's Gemini API release notes announced that the Computer Use tool is generally available in both the Interactions API and the GenerateContent API. Computer Use lets a Gemini model look at a screenshot and then click, type and scroll like a person. In this briefing we explain what changed, how it works, where it runs and the safety controls, using Google's own documentation.

Key facts (from Google's Gemini API documentation):
โ€ข Google first previewed computer use on October 7, 2025 with the Gemini 2.5 Computer Use model; on October 30, 2026 the tool moved to general availability.
โ€ข Supported models listed in the docs: Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini 3.8 Flash (marked as the recommended model for computer use), Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and Gemini 3 Flash Preview.
โ€ข It works as a loop: your app sends a goal plus a screenshot, the model returns an action (with an "intent" explaining it on Gemini 4 and Gemini 3 models), your code executes the action (for example with Playwright), and you send back a new screenshot.
โ€ข Coordinates come back on a normalized 0-999 grid that your code scales to the real screen.
โ€ข Three environments: browser, Android mobile, and desktop (OS-level mouse and keyboard).
โ€ข Safety: actions can come with a safety decision that requires user confirmation. Built-in policy categories cover payments and checkout, sending emails or messages, account creation, accepting terms, and data modification. Some policies can be overridden, but Google says apps should always handle confirmation requests.
โ€ข Opt-in prompt injection detection (Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite or later) checks screenshots for hidden adversarial instructions and blocks execution when detected.
โ€ข Google recommends sandboxed environments (a VM or container) and close supervision for important tasks.
