An AI chip in orbit just answered its first prompt, and the answer was a poem. On October 30, 2026, Google said its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite reached its "Hello World" milestone: the first AI response from a data-center-class TPU in orbit. Here is what the satellite is, what it said, what Google is testing up there, and why tech companies want data centers in space.

Key facts (with sources):
• Google's Project Suncatcher prototype satellite, built with Planet, launched on October 1, 2026 on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission (Google, Planet, NPR). TechCrunch says it flew with more than 100 other spacecraft.
• After a few weeks of commissioning (powering up the host and TPU trays and running early machine-learning tests), Google uplinked its first prompt to the onboard Gemma 4 open model, asking for a haiku about being in space. The poem came down as the satellite passed Svalbard, Norway: "Blue marble below / Data streams in silent grace / Starlight feeds my core." (Google, Oct 30)
• Google then tested space-themed limericks and telemetry prompts about the payload. A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch the satellite is operating nominally.
• The satellite carries four Google TPUs and generates up to 1 kW, but can run only one TPU at a time, for about 20 minutes per TechCrunch (NPR said about 15 minutes at launch), because of power and heat limits.
• Google says launch loads reach up to 10 g, with single parts feeling 50 to 100 g. Its Trillium TPUs were tested in a proton beam at UC Davis and, Google says, survived a radiation dose greater than a five-year space mission. Ground tests suggested radiation matters little for inference and more for training (TechCrunch).
• In the right orbit a solar panel can be up to 8 times more productive than on Earth (Google Research). Next step: twin interconnected satellites with laser links in 2027 (Google, TechCrunch). NPR says the mission aims to run for a year.
• Starcloud flew an Nvidia H100 to space last November, and SpaceX says it expects orbital AI compute satellites as early as 2028 (NPR). A peer-reviewed Suncatcher analysis estimated SpaceX would need about 1,800 Starship flights to reach the cost drop it saw with earlier rockets (TechCrunch).
