Hubble is slowly falling, and NASA is asking private companies how they could help. 🔭
On October 29, 2026, NASA issued a Request for Information to learn about industry capabilities for in-space servicing of the Hubble Space Telescope. NASA announced it on October 30.
What NASA is asking about (per NASA):
• A mission to boost Hubble to a higher altitude to extend its science life
• Servicing Hubble to enhance its capabilities
• A safe, controlled re-entry or orbital disposal at the end of the mission
Why now: Hubble has no propulsion system to hold its own orbit, and atmospheric drag is slowly lowering it. NASA says its analysis predicts Hubble is likely to re-enter the atmosphere in the 2033 to 2034 timeframe, so a mission would need to take place by 2032.
"Hubble still has important science ahead of it," said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman (NASA).
Responses are due by 3 p.m. EST on Monday, November 30, 2026, according to NASA and the SAM.gov notice. A Request for Information is not a contract.
