00:00Baskin and Phelps, 92.3 The Fan. Time now to turn to a good friend of the show.
00:05He is from NFLBlueBook.com. It is one of the newest, hottest things that you can read in the NFL.
00:11Smokin' hot, baby.
00:12He has been around the NFL for a long time, but he gets it, he understands it, and he's got
00:15all the scoop.
00:16He is Charles Robinson, and right now he's on the Wise Heart Right.
00:19We make it right. Call Kyle Wright. Hotline. Hello, my friend. How are you?
00:25Charles.
00:26What's going on, gentlemen? How are you doing this morning?
00:28We're doing good.
00:28Yeah, we don't have to move like Jeffrey Simmons does.
00:31Yeah, that's true. Good point, Jeff.
00:33Yeah.
00:34Did they get a ton for him, or is it just two number ones? That's a lot. He's great, but
00:43that's a lot.
00:44Yeah, his level of play, though, has been really, really high. He's been in Tennessee. He just doesn't get the
00:52attention.
00:53It wasn't Miles Garrett level, but it was really, I mean, you know, so I have an all-pro vote,
00:59and he was certainly a guy that stuck out like a sore thumb when you would call in the NFC
01:06North and just ask, you know, because I try to, I'm like, I try to hit up around the league
01:12and just say,
01:12hey, give me, not necessarily on your team, give me opposing players that are just hammerlocks for you, that you
01:19just, you know, have been major disruptions that you plan for, you know, whether it's offensively or defensively scheming.
01:25And he's just one of those guys that, you know, for several years in that division, you know, has come
01:37up, obviously not in the NFC North. Now he's in the NFC North, but, you know, in the AFC South,
01:42I mean, he's just been an automatic, you know, all-pro for opposing, you know, teams that had to deal
01:48with him.
01:48He comes, it's, what's interesting to me is, we're in this now reality, and we saw it with Sauce Gardner
01:55and now with Jeffrey Sims. It doesn't matter when guys sign extensions. I mean, depending on what the cap situation
01:59is for teams, but I mean, you, you, just because you sign an extension does not mean that you're entrenched
02:06in that team for X number of years the way it used to be. So, that to me is interesting.
02:11And if you're the Bears, when you ask about the price, your thought process, if you're the Bears, you're saying,
02:17we're going to be at the tail end of the first round in 2027 and 2028, and typically when they
02:23stack their draft boards, they probably have 14, 16, 17 first-round grades, and you get to that tail end
02:31of the first round, and it's, you know, gets a little thin there when you're trying to find a player
02:37who still stacks up with a first-round grade at the tail end of the first round.
02:41Charles, just based on this and what we've seen over the last two days, especially with Indy, are we expecting
02:46like a crazy trade deadline here in the NFL?
02:49I think we all kind of hope for it sometimes, especially if your team's a buyer, but it seems like
02:55it's, it feels like it's percolating a little bit more than normal.
02:58Yeah, I think it feels that way, but actually it's kind of been that way the last couple of years.
03:03What I think happens, though, is we end up getting one that comes out of sort of left field, and
03:10I would say Simmons qualifies only because he had just signed that extension.
03:15He's still young enough to fit even Tennessee's window.
03:19I just think when you get offered two first-round picks, especially in a deep 2027 draft, being one of
03:26them, it's a deal that you feel like you've got to take because you have multiple positions to build out.
03:32I think, though, what happens is we get into this frenzy right before the deadline, and, you know, it's because
03:38ESPN has shows and everybody kind of has their, it's 4, you know, it's 4 p.m. on the 10th,
03:44you know, November 10th, and what's going to happen at the last minute?
03:46And it turns out that the bigger trades all happen a week or two in advance.
03:51So Marvin Harrison Jr., Quentin Nelson, DeForest Buckner, and now Jeffrey Simmons, teams that are going to acquire those pieces,
04:01they're not waiting until the deadline to do it.
04:03They're like, let's just, if we're going to do it, let's do it now where we can get more run
04:06out of these guys, a little longer runway rather than waiting.
04:09Because who knows what changes between now and November 10th for the team you're trading with.
04:15So, you know, yeah, it's been, it's certainly spicy right now, and I think part of that is because of
04:20what happened with the Colts.
04:23And the fact that they've got players, I would not take, like Jonathan Taylor, I wouldn't take him off the
04:29table.
04:30You know, it doesn't, I've talked to people in Seattle and San Francisco, and one of the questions I asked
04:35was,
04:36do you think Taylor's going to, like, are they actively shopping Taylor?
04:39And they're like, we didn't get the sense that Taylor's a guy that they're really pushing to move fast,
04:44and if they're going to do it, they want to get the best price, so they're going to, you know,
04:47hold out with him.
04:50But yeah, I mean, it's, this has been, you know, the era we're in.
04:54GMs are much more willing to make big moves, and the cap flexibility now is better, particularly with void years
05:01and all these different things that you can do.
05:04So, yeah, it's a fun time to be, you know, watching the NFL around the trade deadline.
05:09Are you hearing any Browns grumblings about trades?
05:11I mean, we've heard that, you know, Shadour Sanders is not.
05:15But you never know if someone's going to knock on their door, or Dylan Gabriel, or even Taylor Green.
05:20So, I don't think, I have not gotten any sense inside the organization or out that they are shopping Shadour
05:28or Dylan.
05:29And the thing with Shadour is he's viewed by other teams, and he will be viewed by other teams, as
05:38he's a developmental player.
05:39So, you're going to get a day three pick out of a developmental player.
05:42He's not a player that anyone is acquiring, going, this resolves our quarterback needs.
05:46You go get Shadour to say, okay, he signed through 2028.
05:51Let's see if we can develop him.
05:54But for the Browns, when you kind of consider the value and the realities of Deshaun Watson, really, you're going
06:03to have to let him go to free agency because of the poison pill situation with his contract.
06:09In fact, he's worth more to the Browns right now.
06:13First off, just seeing if Deshaun can stay healthy through the rest of the season.
06:18Secondly, because the Browns are in a cap situation where they really, it necessitates them having a cheaply paid quarterback
06:25starter, which we can get into when we talk about Deshaun in the future.
06:29But, yeah, I just don't, I don't think there's, if anything, I think the Browns have earned the right to
06:36be more buyers than sellers.
06:40And, you know, you're sitting at five and two, your point differential is not great in the AFC North when
06:45compared to, let's say, like a Cincinnati.
06:48It looks like it's going to be a close race in the AFC North.
06:52So, if you're the Browns, if there's an ability to add, you try to add.
06:56But financially, I think it's just a little bit difficult to be, you know, shopping for meaningful pieces at the
07:02deadline.
07:02If the Browns are buyers, what are they buying?
07:06I think it's, I personally think it's offensive line.
07:10Like, if you can get some depth there, doesn't even necessarily have to be a starting caliber player.
07:16But, you know, I just think you can't have enough depth.
07:21I mean, we're already seeing, like right now, Titus Howard and Elton Jenkins missed Wednesday's practice, right?
07:28And so, you need depth there.
07:31And especially if it's depth, a piece, a guy that is not just on an expiring deal that maybe you
07:38can, you know, keep around for more than one season.
07:42And I don't know, you know, what else.
07:46It's just an absolutely whiplash, you know, kind of pressing need, particularly now that we're kind of seeing the running
07:51backs are getting healthier.
07:54And maybe, you know, I still don't think the wide receiver, you could go add a wide receiver.
08:02But is Jerry Judy kind of becoming that missing piece that you'd hoped?
08:07And you just see Casey has a huge, you know, you're starting to see maybe some of the young guys,
08:12especially Casey, taking that big step forward.
08:14So, I don't know.
08:16How do you guys perceive it?
08:17What do you think they need at this point that they absolutely have to go out and get?
08:20I don't see a need there.
08:23And that's why I asked you, Charles.
08:25I mean, I think you could always use an offensive lineman, especially on this team.
08:28Yeah, that's, I didn't think there was any spot where you thought they have to go get a starter at
08:35a certain spot.
08:36Maybe corner depth, but isn't everybody going to be looking for a corner?
08:41Yeah, well, corner depth, too.
08:42I mean, I think that kind of falls in the same tranche as offensive linemen.
08:48I agree with you, yeah.
08:49Yeah, and everybody's looking for that, too.
08:51And they're looking for that in August, not just in late October, November.
08:56So, if there's, I could see if there's a corner out there that's just absolutely, like Alante Taylor in Tennessee.
09:05Like, if there's just a player who's, for some reason, is not fitting in at all, you know,
09:11and he's made available for nothing, you know, of consequence.
09:14And if he's got a contract and the team is willing to eat some of, you know, that deal.
09:21Like, Alante Taylor can't get on the field right now for Tennessee.
09:24Like, they want him to be an outside corner.
09:27That didn't work.
09:28You know, he's like a backup nickel right now.
09:31And they're paying him $20 million a year, and they just signed him to that deal.
09:34So, I wonder if maybe that's the one guy out there where it's like something went wrong in the evaluation.
09:41It didn't work.
09:42And maybe you want to move off of him quickly.
09:45And if you can find the right scenario, I could see maybe now that they've dealt Jeffrey Simmons, that being
09:51one where the front office says, you know, we just made a mistake here.
09:53And we're going to go ahead and eat it quickly.
09:56Brown Steelers this week.
09:57A lot of us are trying to figure out who the real Browns are.
10:00And if the Browns are true to what their record is.
10:03Yeah.
10:04This week seems to be the week to figure that out.
10:07I mean, this is just – I hope people understand what a huge opportunity this is because you've already beaten
10:14the Steelers once.
10:14You beat them twice.
10:16Now you've got that – you know, you have that edge.
10:19And I do think it's going to be a division that looks like it's going to play out tight, at
10:26least at this stage.
10:27It looks like it's going to play out tight over the course of the season.
10:30And so you want to have – this is a huge game for the Browns.
10:34But I think, to me, like going into this game, what's the big concern right now?
10:39I don't like the fact that you've got offensive linemen that are missing practice in the middle of the week.
10:44You know, Jared Verse as well.
10:48It's – protection is going to be at a premium in this game, obviously.
10:51And then obviously being able to get after Aaron Rodgers.
10:55But, no, this is a huge, huge opportunity for Cleveland.
10:59And this is where we start to get into when you say, like, you know, who are the real Browns.
11:05This is a consequential game that you have to win.
11:09I don't say you have to win, but if you're going to be a serious playoff contender, you have to
11:14win this game.
11:15It's too much of an edge at this point that it can give you.
11:19You've got to show for it.
11:21Do they?
11:22Who wins?
11:23Who wins?
11:25You know, I – being where it's being played, you know, you probably lean –
11:33You probably lean Pittsburgh, but it's – I don't know.
11:40Like, the Browns are – I'm not thrilled with, obviously, what happened last week, you know, just in terms of,
11:48like, the overall balance.
11:50But, you know, what the offense did was encouraging.
11:52What KC did was encouraging.
11:56I probably lean slightly Pittsburgh, but I would not be surprised if maybe this is the sort of plant-the
12:03-flag moment for this Browns team.
12:04I certainly would think that's what Todd Monken is preaching right now.
12:08Like, if this is it right now, right here, we can say this is going to be our division.
12:13We're going to show it by beating Pittsburgh twice and doing it on their home field.
12:16So, Charles, as always, we appreciate your time.
12:19Be one of the cool kids on the block.
12:20Be one of those first people.
