00:00If the Browns should pick a quarterback at six, you would think...
00:03What?
00:04I'm asking you, if the Browns would pick a quarterback,
00:06again, this is hypothetical, this is what we do for a living.
00:09If they picked a quarterback at six, you would think what, Jeff Phelps?
00:14Real simple.
00:16They better be right.
00:18That's it.
00:19I wouldn't be all, let me say it again, hot in a biscuit about it.
00:24I would be, they better be right.
00:27Dan, if they picked a quarterback at six, they would be blank.
00:31Insane.
00:32I tend to agree with you.
00:34I mean, you have more holes than quarterback,
00:36and I know people don't want to hear that because we've seen enough examples
00:39of quarterbacks coming in and essentially plaster of parishing over some of those holes.
00:45If Todd Munkin thinks he's the second coming of fill-in-the-blank
00:50and he thinks he can make Ty Simpson the quarterback here for the next 12 years,
00:54why wouldn't you take him at six?
00:57Because you can get other things to help make sure that quarterback
01:00has the ability to throw said ball.
01:02Well, good.
01:03Then you're still looking for said quarterback.
01:06Well, that's where you've got to read the draft.
01:07By the way, I don't think they should, and I don't think they will.
01:10But if they determine that he is the right guy,
01:15then they should draft him because this team needs a quarterback.
01:19Now, and I say that thinking maybe the quarterback's on the team.
01:24You know, maybe it's Dylan Gabriel.
01:27Maybe it's Deshaun Watson.
01:29More likely it's Shador Sanders.
01:32But if they truly think that the guy's going to be a good NFL starting quarterback,
01:40if they truly think that, then they should draft him at six.
01:46Or trade up to get him from 24 and throw in whatever it takes.
01:51All right, before I get into Ty Simpson, I do want to throw one more curveball at you.
01:54Oh, good.
01:55What if for some reason Mendoza drops to six?
02:01Let's just say he has a Laramie Tunsil.
02:02Why are you saying that?
02:04So you're pulling for the bong and the gas mask?
02:07Yes, yes, yes, the bong and the mask.
02:09The bong and the gas mask, correct.
02:10Yes, by the way, if you know that joke, you've listened to this show for a long period of time.
02:14Yes, you have.
02:15You've heard Fernando Mendoza's press conferences, haven't you?
02:19Yeah.
02:20You heard him talk about mommy when he won the Heisman Trophy, right?
02:24Yeah.
02:24You really think that dude's going bong and gas mask?
02:27Jeff.
02:28No, it's the bong.
02:29Say it correctly.
02:30Jeff, you never know how much furniture is inside someone's house.
02:34Dan seems to have an awful lot of familiarity with the word bong.
02:37No, it was just the cut itself.
02:39The bong and the gas mask.
02:41Bong.
02:42Bong.
02:42You have to say it correctly.
02:44I know.
02:44I was just kind of, you know.
02:47I was trying to flash Dan over to his Grateful Dead days, if you can remember those.
02:51If there were some.
02:51Think I've left those?
02:54You mean March 24th?
02:55I'm still bummed over Bob Weir.
02:58I'm still hurting a little.
02:59Golly.
02:59If he was sitting there at six, just say something odd happens.
03:03You would take him?
03:04Why are you saying that?
03:05I'm telling you, this is a quarterback.
03:07Yes, of course you would take him.
03:09Because you know everything that is insane.
03:11Yes, you would take him.
03:11You would take him.
03:12Because you would think, and history tells you.
03:14And you would clean out everybody else.
03:16That's right.
03:17History tells you, based on last year alone, that if this franchise thought they were getting
03:22an unbelievable deal, like they did with Shadour Sanders, that they would do it again.
03:29History tells you that.
03:30You'd pick up the phone and go get some nondescript veteran to come in and back up Deshaun as the
03:39backup.
03:39And you'd trade Shadour, and you'd trade Dillon, and there you go.
03:43Okay.
03:43I just want to make sure.
03:45Of course you would, but that's not happening.
03:47I just want to make sure we're leveling out the playing field here.
03:51So this morning, on the morning show, Kalen DeBoer, head coach of Alabama.
03:58Your Crimson Tide.
04:00And the coach of Ty Simpson, who might be a possibility at six.
04:09He might, but I'm going to tell you, history, as I said, history tells you what will the Browns
04:15do.
04:16They will trade the pick.
04:19History tells you that since 99.
04:22Whatever the Browns might be thinking in that first round, it's Gonzo.
04:26Look, think for another pick.
04:27But let's say they stay at six, and Simpson is the man they want.
04:31As Jeff said, this is the guy they want.
04:34If you think he's your number one guy, you better go get him at six.
04:38I can't argue with that.
04:39So, what does his head coach think of him?
04:44And he spoke this morning on the morning show.
04:46Here's Kalen DeBoer.
04:48We're going to play a little bit of what his interview said.
04:50Let's talk about how he might help the team.
04:53Even though he hasn't played a lot of starts, I think that's the one thing people look at.
04:57He's been around college football, not just in college, but the son of a coach.
05:02Man, he's just done a great job.
05:04And last year, he really did an excellent job of taking big steps forward, big chunks,
05:12from going from playing a little bit his previous years to Olsen on the football field.
05:18And, you know, starting fast, starting the season fast, and making a lot of big plays for us.
05:24Okay, doesn't do anything for me, because if you're going to, you know,
05:27if one of the reasons you think he's going to be a good player is because he played for a
05:30head coach,
05:31well, guess what?
05:31We already have one of those quarterbacks on this team,
05:33and he was probably one of the best players to ever suit up in the NFL.
05:38Does that do anything for you?
05:42No.
05:48Your excitement for this is through the roof.
05:50Well, I want to hear more of what he had to say.
05:52Back to you, Tom.
05:58I mean, it can't be easy to be the quarterback in Alabama.
06:01Let's be honest.
06:01Yeah, I would think that'd be a rough gig.
06:04Okay, this was one of my favorite questions that they asked him this morning.
06:10Would he be ready to start game one?
06:13I don't know.
06:14That's not for me to decide.
06:15That's for him.
06:16And that learning curve that comes along with any move, whether it's high school or college,
06:20and obviously there's a big step from college to the NFL.
06:24You know, I certainly respect that, and I know Ty does too, but I can tell you this.
06:28I can tell you he would put his head down and go compete for a job from the get-go.
06:33And so that part I can tell you, and he'll do it the right way.
06:40Jeff, thoughts?
06:41He's not ready to compete.
06:43He's not ready to be the starter in the NFL.
06:45The guy started one year at Alabama.
06:48I'm high on this guy.
06:50Keep in mind, he couldn't beat out Jalen Milrow or didn't beat out Jalen Milrow.
06:56Let's just, for whatever reason, he backed up Jalen Milrow at Alabama.
07:00And Jalen Milrow is a third-round draft choice.
07:04So, you know, teams passed on him a couple of times.
07:07So, I would think to maximize your ability to have Ty Simpson succeed if you're an NFL team,
07:14you're going to draft him and you're going to let him sit.
07:16You're going to give him a redshirt year.
07:19It's not that Jalen DeBoer doesn't believe in his former quarterback and doesn't believe that he couldn't be a quarterback
07:28in the NFL.
07:29Why not?
07:29Sure.
07:29But I've got to be honest with you.
07:30If I'm going to pick him at six, I want a college head coach that's going to say,
07:36I've got to tell you, when my guy gets to the NFL, he will be ready day one and I
07:41think he can start in the NFL
07:43because I have visions in my mind dancing around of Brian Kelly telling us all Deshaun Kaiser wasn't ready
07:51and could have used another year in college.
07:54And guess what?
07:55Brian Kelly was right.
07:56So, if you're going to listen to the head coach of a college quarterback
08:01and he is not ready to dance on the table and jump on the table and break the table to
08:07tell you that his guy
08:08is ready to be a starter day one in the NFL, and I know he was trying to give us
08:12the nice answer there,
08:13and I really don't have a problem with Jalen DeBoer's answer.
08:17I just, if you believe that they're going to take Ty Simpson at six or maybe anywhere in the first
08:23round,
08:24it really would feel better if his college head coach said,
08:27you know what? This kid's ready for the NFL right now.
08:31And we didn't get that.
08:33Is that fair?
08:34I don't think you'd draft a guy who's played one year in college and think he walks in and he's
08:38your starter in the NFL.
08:41I don't know. If you think I'm wrong, let me know.
08:43But that's just, especially knowing what we've gone through with this quarterback,
08:46with quarterbacks on this franchise, I just, I don't want, I just,
08:51if this is a possibility, I just, I would love,
08:56and by the way, if he gets drafted six and someone goes to talk to Jalen DeBoer afterwards,
08:59they'll be like, hey, I know a team that's going to get ready for a guy.
09:02And I think he said the right answer.
09:04He's going to battle no matter where he goes to have an opportunity to try to win a job.
09:10And I know that's a politically correct thing.
09:12I just would feel so much better if a college head coach would go,
09:15he's the man, he's ready to go.
09:17Jalen DeBoer was on the morning show and we played a couple of clips.
09:20It's a cool name, by the way, isn't it?
09:22Yeah, it is. It actually is.
09:25So, you know, he said some things and I'm sitting here talking about Ty Simpson,
09:31who could be a possibility for the Browns if they draft him.
09:33I do think that depending on where he's available and where the Browns could draft him,
09:37obviously it could shake up what we're looking at a quarterback right now
09:41or what you're thinking about for the future or, you know,
09:44who could be or who could not be on the roster.
09:46I just...
09:46Can I ask you before you keep going?
09:48Sure.
09:49Do you expect him to be a Brown?
09:52If he's available, I think there's a chance he could be a Brown
09:59if he's still available with the second pick in the first round for the Browns.
10:03I think they will contemplate it.
10:08Do you?
10:10And I really think it if he's around in the second round.
10:14Third pick.
10:15I don't think he'll be there in the second round.
10:17I mean, just only because I had heard some things
10:20and I don't know if I heard them because this is what they want to be heard,
10:24that they liked him at the Combine.
10:27Okay.
10:27Well, Todd Munkin has liked him since he's like seven years old.
10:31Right, right, right, Jeff.
10:32So, that's what makes me think that if he's available for their second pick
10:37in the first round, that there's a chance.
10:40I mean, Jeff, they drafted two quarterbacks last year.
10:43Anything is possible.
10:45Yep.
10:47If, again...
10:47If they draft him, period, Andy, I won't yell and scream.
10:53You know what my thought will be?
10:54Great.
10:55They think they have found their quarterback.
10:58And I would be thrilled if they actually find their quarterback.
11:03The question is, are they right?
11:07But, you know, they're not going to take him in the first round,
11:10anywhere in the first round, unless they think he is their quarterback.
11:14And if they do, great.
11:16I'll think they have nailed it, and then we'll wait and see if they're correct.
11:24All right.
11:25So, Ty Simpson was dealing with a couple injuries this year, but let's go back.
11:29He was really good before he got dinged up.
11:31Yeah.
11:31So, there are two things that Kalen DeBoer said coming up here from the morning show.
11:36We already played two cuts.
11:37We're going to play two more.
11:37But, you know, one of the reasons why you may, like, oh, man, is this, you know,
11:43would this really be the right move, or is this the right move for any team?
11:47Not just, you know, just, not just the Browns, but any team.
11:52And, you know, you go back and look at the Rose Bowl, where they lost to Indiana.
11:56We went on to be the national champions.
11:59They lose 38-3 in that game.
12:01Alabama ends up season at 11-4.
12:04Indiana was perfect, right?
12:05They were 14-0.
12:07And so, DeBoer talked about the game against Indiana.
12:11We always tell our guys what you put on film is, you know, who you are and stuff.
12:15And so, but, again, I think that there's, you know, there's a team, you know,
12:21that's around you that can help you out, too.
12:23And, you know, we needed to help tie out with a better run game at times.
12:28I think that would have made life a little easier for him.
12:31And, you know, again, I thought Ty did some good things, you know, even in that game.
12:38You know, unfortunately, he didn't, wasn't able to play in the second half.
12:42That's really the only time he missed all year.
12:44And, you know, when you're referring to kind of the previous question you asked about, you know,
12:48the bumps and bruises are getting dinged up.
12:51But he's a tough kid, and he wanted to be out there and gave everything he had.
12:55I think that's what I take from that game is that, you know, he didn't want to come off the
13:01field,
13:01and there just came a point where, you know, he understood as a team player, like,
13:05you've got to do what's best for the team.
13:08And what's scary is, he was the leading rusher for Alabama that day.
13:13They had 24 yards on the ground in the Rose Bowl.
13:17Ty Simpson led them with 17 yards.
13:21Daniel had 13, Kevin Riley had two.
13:23And Austin Mack, who played quarterback, minus eight.
13:26So I think my math's right there.
13:28Still, it's barely two first downs running.
13:34So I don't know.
13:35Do you hold the Rose Bowl against him?
13:36You know, if you say you are what you showed on film.
13:44Andy, I've read people who have said before he was injured, he was one guy.
13:50After he was injured, he was another.
13:52And you shouldn't hold when he was injured against him.
13:55That's what gives me a lot of hope about him.
13:57Well, I did.
13:58For whoever drafts him.
13:58Yeah.
13:59I mean, he was really good early on.
14:02And that's, I think that's a factor that must be considered here.
14:06Again, I would be surprised if the Browns draft him at all.
14:12But if they do, okay.
14:15You know, I would think Andrew Barry's on the hot seat.
14:20I don't think he is, Jeff.
14:22Okay.
14:22Well, if he's not, fine.
14:25He should be.
14:26Because he's responsible for three wins.
14:28A roster that won three wins and five wins the last two years.
14:32Jeff, I kind of feel like if they only win three games again this year,
14:35then he'll, then at the end of the season, I just don't.
14:39Well, he's not on the hot seat.
14:40They're not going to fire him now.
14:41Right.
14:41I don't think they'll fire him, period.
14:43I hope he does a great job in the draft and we get this thing going.
14:48That said, you know, you're the GM of a team that won three and five in back-to-back years
14:53and it cost the head coach's job.
14:55Okay.
14:56How does that not cost the GM his job?
14:58I don't know.
14:59But they chose the head coach.
15:01I kind of felt they were a package deal.
15:04Apparently they're not.
15:04And if he is going to risk his career on Ty Simpson, well, then good for him.
15:13He better be right.
15:14And I would think that would give you pause and maybe confidence if you're a Browns fan.
15:21I mean, think about it.
15:21Andrew Barry drafts a quarterback in the first round this year in a quarterback draft
15:27where they think there's maybe two guys, maybe one guy for sure, maybe a second.
15:35And he takes that guy.
15:37Well, he's rolling the dice right there, man.
15:40My career is on the line because I drafted Ty Simpson in the first round.
