Does mouth taping really work for snoring and better sleep? Research so far is limited. A review of ten small studies found real benefit in only two.
Snoring can also point to sleep apnea. In the Sleep Heart Health Study, 2,656 adults had overnight breathing tests and blood sugar checks. Those with 15 or more breathing pauses per hour had about 1.5 times the odds of high fasting blood sugar, independent of weight. This shows a link, not cause, and stress hormones released during each pause may help drive insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes risk.
Taping your mouth may quiet snoring without treating apnea. Loud snoring, daytime tiredness or pauses in breathing are reasons to ask your doctor about a sleep study. If you use a continuous glucose monitor, compare your morning readings after poor sleep and good sleep.
