Ultra-processed food may be doing silent damage to your brain. A new JAMA Network Open study from researchers at McMaster in Canada put almost 9,000 healthy, middle-aged adults in an MRI. Nobody had symptoms, but the heaviest ultra-processed food eaters were about 40 percent more likely to show tiny areas of brain damage.
Ultra-processed means snack packs, soda, sugary cereal, instant noodles and frozen ready meals. Stuff that's built in a factory to keep you eating. Those same people carried more deep belly fat, the kind wrapped around your organs, which is tied to inflammation, blood vessel damage and insulin resistance. So this isn't just a brain problem. It's a metabolic problem.
When my A1c was 12.2 percent, I had a fat belly and type 2 diabetes. Changing what I ate was a big part of reversing it. Shop the outside of the store. Meat, eggs, vegetables. Real food you recognize.
