00:0015 minutos e 1 lap race, 2.50, Moto 1,
00:03e a playoff está underway.
00:06There you go, right-hand start.
00:08And that is Davies with the red background,
00:10the number 1 seed coming in with the start.
00:14And challenged by Ryder DiFrancisco on the White House Camarna,
00:17but it's Davies to the lead.
00:18Wow, we just talked about him here at the top of the show,
00:21and man, what a start for Cole Davies.
00:25And he's been so exceptional all season long, supercrossed.
00:29We talked about him so much, getting that championship.
00:31And you guys, James and Jason,
00:33talking about him at the Pro Motocross Championship.
00:35And this is what great riders do, that impactor, James.
00:39You talk about it a lot.
00:40Yeah, and he does.
00:41And we saw this happen towards the end of the motocross
00:44where he was able to capitalize on some of the mistakes
00:46from Levi Kitchen, getting the hole shot, getting it down.
00:49And another guy we see in our screen, Julian Bollmere,
00:52the guy who won our last motocross race, goes down.
00:54So that's going to be costly for him, especially in this mud.
00:57But Cole Davies, defending supercross champion,
01:00defending motocross champion,
01:01now leading the playoffs out front again.
01:03And Bollmere considered one of Davies' primary competitors.
01:08But he is going to have to do major work now all the way back in the pack
01:12and going to be dealing with all the mud thrown off of these motorcycles.
01:15Look how clean Davies' bike and gear are.
01:18And you can start to see how muddy everybody else is.
01:21Yeah, you talked about the keys to the moto here and setting the tone
01:26and what that looks like.
01:27Cole Davies is doing a great job by that.
01:29But also survival.
01:31Survival on conditions like this will pay massive dividends
01:35looking down the stretch here in three weeks,
01:37championship weekend in Missouri.
01:39That is Dax Benick into second now.
01:43Tall rider out of North Carolina looking for his foot.
01:46He's been up and down this year, but strong today.
01:48Well, he talked to us at the press conference yesterday, Jason.
01:51Remember, he said top five was his goal,
01:53and he's off to a great start of definitely accomplishing that.
01:58Very challenging check right here.
02:00Here's some other contenders.
02:01As you can see, barely able to even do these jumps
02:04in these muddy conditions.
02:05You have Levi Kitchen, who battled Davies
02:08down to the final race of the Pro Motocross Championship.
02:11Here he is in third on the 47, the rider out of Washington.
02:15And his teammate Nick Romano just back from injury.
02:18had to race his way into this event
02:20by qualifying through the wildcard race.
02:23Now, that gives you a bad grip position off the start,
02:26but somehow Romano able to start well anyway,
02:30and he's in fourth behind Kitchen.
02:31Well, you got to think,
02:32since Nick was able to race that wildcard race,
02:35that he's probably a lot more warmed up.
02:37None of these guys were able to get on the racetrack today,
02:39so this is the first time they're out here,
02:41except for the guys who rode that wildcard,
02:43and that's Nick Romano.
02:44He was able to win it, running top five here, Ricky.
02:47You know, another thing about the SMX World Championship
02:49that I like is, remember, this isn't just one main event.
02:53They have two moto formats.
02:54So, yes, is it important to get a great finish here
02:58in this first moto?
02:59Absolutely.
03:00But remember, you got another moto coming up,
03:03much different than Supercross.
03:06So Romano out of New York.
03:07Yes, returning from a back injury
03:09was a great story earlier in the year.
03:10Wasn't even on this team when the season began.
03:14Wasn't even sure if he's going to be racing anymore.
03:16Actually, Kitchin helped him get this ride
03:18when that team needed a fill-in due to injury,
03:21and he has made the most of it,
03:23running fourth on that 141.
03:25Next up, well, we're going to catch up with Beaumare,
03:29who is in 18th place out of 22 riders.
03:32He's the rider on the right.
03:33Yeah, you saw that Julian went down on that first lap.
03:36And, man, if you're ever going to go down in a mud race,
03:39the first lap is so brutal if that happens to you.
03:42Why?
03:43Because so many people pass you,
03:45and it's so hard to pass in the mud.
03:47As you can see here on your screen,
03:49now guys not being able to double these jumps,
03:52and I think the conditions will continue to get more challenging
03:56because that mud is just going to get thicker and thicker and heavier
03:59as they continue to ride.
04:01Yeah, and you're in a position where Julian coming in,
04:04you would think that if there's one of these races
04:07that you're going to let go, it would probably be this one.
04:09But at the same time, just the momentum that Cole had
04:12and the momentum you had coming into this,
04:13you wanted to kind of capitalize on that.
04:15As Ricky said, it makes it really difficult
04:17because not only do you have to try to race the racetrack,
04:19you've got to worry about the other riders going,
04:21Kristen Kross, and Julian's dealing with it right now.
04:26Trying to get around Marshall Welton, veteran out of Michigan.
04:29Hey, Progressive is giving away an unforgettable SMX weekend
04:33next season for Anaheim 1 early next year.
04:36So win an exclusive experience with rider meet, greets,
04:39VIP tickets, fan merch, and more.
04:41You can scan that QR code on the screen now,
04:44or go to smx.winthepit.com.
04:48See you at the races next year.
04:50And that might be the story with Cole Davies
04:52because he is already out of sight for everyone else.
04:56Epic.
04:56Yeah, sorry, go ahead, James.
04:58Now you notice Cole, you know,
05:00revved his motorcycle up to the lap rider
05:01to kind of let him know, Ricky.
05:03Yeah, just making these guys aware,
05:06wanting to get by and see how ruddy this racetrack
05:09is getting right now.
05:11It's going to be very difficult to move around on this track.
05:13So the reason that Cole does that,
05:15so those guys can move over just a bit.
05:18This is second and third.
05:19The left side is Benick in second.
05:22Kitchen was closing on him,
05:24but you're going to see a lot of ebb and flow to these battles
05:27because mistakes.
05:28There's going to be so many of them in these conditions.
05:31Now they're able to double this big jump
05:32down here at the far end of the stadium.
05:35Yeah, and the one thing with this,
05:36and one of the reasons you'll see that is because of vision.
05:39You know, you don't want to be up on the back of the guy
05:41unless you're ready to pass him.
05:42So you'll see gaps between within a second to three seconds,
05:46depending as you're watching Levi close in.
05:48But he feels like he can't get around him.
05:50He'll drop back in case Daston Bennett makes a mistake.
05:54He wants to be there.
05:55We go again to another tough rhythm section.
05:57They've got a few lap riders in front of him.
05:59So sometimes you can use these lap riders as a pick right there.
06:03That's a fine example.
06:04You can see that Bennett getting a little gap on Kitchen,
06:08able to get by that lap rider.
06:10Their timing is so crucial, being able to look ahead,
06:14closing in on those lap riders,
06:16and where you can strategically make the move.
06:19Oh, is that Romano getting lapped?
06:21Yeah, Romano has dropped off the back of the pack.
06:24He is 18th after running fourth early.
06:27So Kitchen and Bennett, that is a lap rider there.
06:30It is Caden Dudney in fourth,
06:33and Roderick Francisco fifth.
06:35That's the teammate of Bennett.
06:36So this would be huge for Bennett on the 58th.
06:40He had a great beginning of his Supercross campaign,
06:43was up on the podium,
06:44and then had an injury early in the motocross campaign,
06:46and has been rebuilding himself since then,
06:50and it's working today.
06:51All right, Jack, I don't know if it's getting better or worse.
06:54Will, what's happening down there?
06:55Yeah, which I guess it depends who you are at this point, right?
06:58And if you're Dax Bennett, you're probably saying it's getting better.
07:01Talking to Dax earlier on today,
07:03this was the scenario that he was hoping for,
07:05in the sense of this levelling of the playing field
07:08that JT was talking about earlier.
07:10Checking in with the teams and what it means to them,
07:13these kind of conditions.
07:14James, Ricky, you've been through it here.
07:18What the mechanics have to do once you guys bring these bikes in
07:21is so much work,
07:22so the stress kind of all shifts onto them at this point in the day
07:26because they've got to keep these bikes running.
07:28Every single team that I've spoken to said,
07:30our goal is to get our bike across the finish line.
07:34We've got to finish the race.
07:35Yes, that's partly on the rider,
07:37but so much stress on the mechanics and the crew chief
07:39to get that job done,
07:41and right now we're seeing somebody like Dax benefit from the situation.
07:44Yeah, well, they definitely are the unsung heroes in these situations.
07:49The mechanics are and the team members as well.
07:51I mean, it is a team effort.
07:54All these team personnel going the extra mile,
07:57putting foam in certain areas
08:00to where mud can't get packed on the motorcycle
08:02and, again, trying to get this bike to the finish line.
08:06And I watched Dax right here, James,
08:08and he just doesn't look like he's overriding the bike.
08:11He's really silky smooth for the most part.
08:13Yeah, he looks like Cole Davies out front,
08:15and I think Dax is the taller rider,
08:17so he can use some of those legs as leverage.
08:19And then when you've got Cole Davies,
08:21they ride their bikes in a lower RPM,
08:23so one of the things that you can keep the surviving motorcycle
08:26to keep it running is by keeping it lower in the RPMs,
08:29and that also helps the traction.
08:30So with these types of ride,
08:32it's not surprising to see a guy like Dax and Cole out front.
08:35Yeah, what James is talking about, too, just to expand on that,
08:38the other important thing of riding in a higher gear ride
08:42and not creating a whole lot of RPM
08:44is the engine heat stays a lot lower,
08:47and your bike will perform a lot better.
08:50So Davies continues to march away in nearly a 20-second gap.
08:54We asked him yesterday about being ready for this postseason run.
09:00Yeah, ready to go.
09:02I feel like I've got some momentum coming in
09:04after the Supercross Championship and Motocross Championship,
09:06so, yeah, just ready to go.
09:08Ready to have some fun.
09:09I get to go home after these three rounds,
09:11so I'm just going to enjoy it and have some fun.
09:13And home for him is New Zealand.
09:15This rider was not even known in America
09:18probably about three years ago,
09:20and now just two weeks after his 19th birthday,
09:23he might be the biggest shining young star in the sport.
09:27It has been a very steep, fast learning curve,
09:30and now we know.
09:31Oh!
09:32Almost goes down with a lap rider.
09:33Now we know he can ride the mud as well as he can the drive.
09:36And he's trying to get by his teammate right there
09:38and put his teammate a lap down, I believe, right?
09:42That was a close one.
09:44Yeah, here you go,
09:45and his teammate's trying to get past another lap.
09:47There he is.
09:49Now this is actually the straightaway before all this happens.
09:52Oh, that's Muneer.
09:52It's actually not the same one, so I believe that was...
09:55Was it Muneer?
09:56Yeah, Muneer right there, his teammate,
09:58but not sure who's the guy who got it almost mixed up.
10:00That's the point of having this nice lead if you're Cole Davies
10:03that you can back it down.
10:05You can see 19 seconds, pretty nice at the moment,
10:07and finally still hasn't got around his teammate.
10:09I was thinking, too, like, just a lap before him,
10:12like, man, he's got an eternity of a lead right now,
10:15but it's big in normal conditions,
10:18but in the mud, that 19 seconds can come up quick.
10:24He has lapped half of the field already.
10:27That's why he's getting into some of his teammates,
10:29other great riders that he's closing in on.
10:31We mentioned Cade Muneer is in the front half of this 22-rider field.
10:36He's up into the top 10 lappers.
10:37Just to give you a perspective, I mean, his fastest lap is a 102,
10:42and Benick is his second fastest at a 105.
10:47So, I mean, he's just crushing the field.
10:50But even in this lap, those mistakes that he got caught up,
10:53now it's only 13 seconds.
10:55So, you know, he lost over six seconds.
10:57Just that last lap just shows you the gap.
11:00Now, this is critical back here.
11:02There is the defending Monster SMX World Champion Joe Shimoda on the left side.
11:06That's the number one.
11:07He is in 13th place, and he has caught his Honda teammate,
11:11Chance Hymus, one of the favorites.
11:12Oh, no.
11:13And Joe goes down.
11:14See, you see that mud I talked about at the beginning of this race,
11:18how it's going to continue to get more challenging and difficult
11:20because that mud is going to get thicker and heavier, JT.
11:23Yeah, and you just wonder for Joe Shimoda,
11:26you thought he had to get good starts, right?
11:28I got to speak with him before the race there,
11:30and he talked about he's not quite all the way prepared,
11:33and he wasn't really sure how the results were going to go.
11:35It's so situational for these races, and when you're not quite ready,
11:39you need to be able to execute the start the way he did in Arlington
11:43in a similar situation.
11:44You put yourself in the back, and even a rider like Chance Hymus,
11:47who won in the mud in Foxborough,
11:49if you don't get a good start in these conditions,
11:51your life is miserable for the next 15 or 20 minutes.
11:55And these guys, all of these contenders, Bomer, Hyman, Shimoda,
11:58are all feeling the brunt of that simply because they did not get the start.
12:02And what makes it even more critical is the fourth year of this postseason format.
12:06We have not seen a mud race like this before, so any mistake,
12:11and now Davies has problems.
12:12Any mistake or bike problem will be magnified,
12:15and now that could be the case for the race leader.
12:21Looks like he's having some troubles, right?
12:25He's got it running, obviously, but he cannot get up to speed, JT.
12:28Yeah, just wondering if it's overheated,
12:30and the clutch starts to be the biggest issue
12:32where it's not disengaging and you can't push forward.
12:35We hate to speculate in this situation,
12:37but when these bikes do get hot,
12:39the clutch can be the biggest letdown here.
12:41Yeah, I would be surprised if it,
12:43that would be surprising to me if it was the clutch
12:45because coal is so efficient,
12:47but clearly that engine is overheating.
12:49That is the overflow.
12:52Yeah, water is turning to steam and just blowing out of the bottom.
12:55Yeah, it looks like something's stuck in his rear brake
12:58because if you notice, as soon as he lets off the gas,
12:59the thing wants to stop on him.
13:01Will?
13:02Guys, I mean, I don't want to speculate here either,
13:05but talking to some of the mechanics there at start,
13:08you know, they've got their airbox,
13:11they've got their intake up front there.
13:12They usually ride those mesh plates at the front to help the airflow.
13:17They've had to switch, and the fear was amongst them,
13:20but because of that, as opposed to sort of being in the rear,
13:23that obviously if mud and everything,
13:25the water gets caped in there,
13:27that it will interfere with the airflow.
13:29Potentially a problem here?
13:31That looks to me, yeah.
13:32I think that rear wheel has been locked,
13:35and then the engine is overheating, perhaps trying to make it go,
13:38and now he has given up the ghost.
13:42He's stuck at the top of the jump,
13:43and just like that,
13:44he was taking advantage of all the would-be contenders in the back.
13:49David's going to go all the way to the back of the field himself.
13:51Well, that's an absolute gift
13:53when I'm looking at the running order.
13:55Guys that I thought,
13:56Hymas, for example,
13:57Shimoda,
13:58Bomer,
13:59those guys this week that we were talking about
14:01who could be serious contenders
14:02for this SMX World Championship.
14:05And look at the emotion.
14:06He now knows his race is run.
14:07He did enter the playoffs
14:09with a very small points lead
14:10as the number one seed
14:12from winning in motocross and supercross,
14:14but that will be long gone.
14:16And meanwhile,
14:17how about this Cinderella story?
14:18They say anything could happen in a mud race.
14:21Dax Bennett could be looking at his first professional win here.
14:24Well, we were just talking about motorcycles
14:26and having them last.
14:27It's just even,
14:28it's more than just what the Rodders do.
14:30You have scenarios,
14:30what just happened to Cole,
14:31and I don't know,
14:33for him,
14:33it's going to be critical to see
14:34when Dax can actually come by for the laps,
14:37because you've got to remember,
14:38Cole was able to lap a lot of Rodders,
14:40so maybe he was able to make up some time
14:42and he won't lose those positions
14:43because of those laps.
14:44It's like he's dropping down to 17th at the moment.
14:47I mean,
14:47Unbelievable.
14:47I would assume that Daxon has seen Cole
14:51off to the side of the track there
14:53on that double-face takeoff right here.
14:57Now,
14:58there he can see him.
15:00Now, look,
15:00it is a two-moto format.
15:01He is not the overall winner of the race.
15:03This is one of the two races,
15:05but a significant step in the right direction
15:07for the young man from Morganton, North Carolina
15:10to just take that first-ever checkered flag
15:12as a professional would be huge.
15:15Yeah,
15:15he's just lapping Landon Gordon on the inside right here,
15:17and that'd be for seventh spot.
15:21I told you,
15:22I told you,
15:22man,
15:23this guy,
15:23I mean,
15:23he looked so smooth early on in the race.
15:26He didn't look like he was pushing it too hard.
15:29Just found his groove,
15:30railing around the corners,
15:31and he can hold it together for one more lap.
15:34What an incredible ride this will be.
15:36He talked about setting the tone.
15:39He has done it.
15:40Got a little help
15:41with Davies' misfortune.
15:43However,
15:44he was in the perfect spot
15:45to take advantage of that.
15:46And incredible
15:47that Davies had that huge lead,
15:49and again,
15:49it is only a three-race postseason.
15:51There will be double points next week,
15:53triple points to next,
15:54but Davies is going to be looking
15:56at must-win situations
15:57to just get back in contention
15:59for this world title
16:01due to the problems in the mud.
16:03No such issues for Benick.
16:05That would be a major shot
16:07in the arm for his career.
16:08He did have two Supercross podiums
16:10earlier this year,
16:11but it has been a lot of hot and cold for him.
16:13Potential at times,
16:15bad luck at others,
16:16but he's got it right in the mud here.
16:20Got to hold on to it, though.
16:21Yeah, it ain't over.
16:22We've seen a lot of that this summer.
16:24When you think you know,
16:24you never do,
16:25but Daxson's in a great spot,
16:27and younger rider,
16:29had some injuries,
16:30kind of starting to find his flow.
16:32Great to see him out here.
16:33and hopefully a couple more corners
16:34and he can hold this thing off
16:35and get moto number one here.
16:36Yeah, fabulous ride.
16:38Well earned, there's no doubt.
16:39All right, it's a two-moto format.
16:41Not the overall winner of the event yet,
16:42but he is halfway home.
16:44He had Kitson in second,
16:45who will certainly be happy
16:47about the points he's going to score.
16:49If he can hold on,
16:50with Davies, Kymus, Bomer,
16:52a lot of the favorites in the back.
16:54Daxson Bennett has won
16:55the first moto of the playoffs,
16:57and he does it in tough conditions.
17:01Here is Kitson.
17:03And of all the riders
17:04that have won races this year
17:05that wanted to contend,
17:06were expected to contend for the title,
17:08he's going to be the first
17:09of them across the line.
17:12Yeah.
17:12So,
