00:00You and I, we weren't surprised.
00:02And I think that maybe the fans, they're not surprised
00:05and they're mad because they're not surprised.
00:07Because Todd Munkin was on the Todd Munkin Show yesterday
00:11and he talked about how the competition
00:14or the development of a competition in the first place actually happened.
00:20You could see early on in the offseason that Shadur was getting better
00:24and that's when the decision was made, okay, let's open this up.
00:28Had we made that decision earlier in camp, Deshaun is so much further ahead
00:32just in terms of being around a number of offenses.
00:34In order to get Shadur up to speed, we divide it, we turn it into a competition
00:37and he takes advantage of it and really does continue to improve,
00:41continue to each week get better with his command, the operation,
00:45everything about the offense.
00:47And so we come back for training camp, keep the same thing going.
00:49But we needed Shadur to really beat out Deshaun
00:53with being the first game being on the road, being in Jacksonville
00:55and then Tampa without throwing him out there to start the season
00:59from an operation standpoint being on the road.
01:01Even though last weekend didn't go Deshaun's way,
01:04the full body of work said at this time, he gives us the best chance to win.
01:08I think the coaches believe that, our players on offense believe that,
01:11and that's the direction we went.
01:12So if you're a Shadur fan, I would just say,
01:15or you're a person who just can't stand Deshaun Watson,
01:17which there are plenty of people in both camps
01:19who also have owned Browns jerseys for a long time,
01:23I would think just be ready.
01:24Like, still the truth, I think, is that Shadur's going to play more
01:28than Deshaun Watson this year.
01:30That just because Shadur, and this is the conversation we had on Monday,
01:35Shadur's more encouraging.
01:38Shadur, there's more curiosity.
01:41But just because there's those things,
01:44like, I don't know if I'd want to torpedo him either.
01:47This is going to be tough to say,
01:48because a lot of people are mad at Todd Munkin,
01:50but we said this last week.
01:52I don't want to torpedo Shadur's Sanders season
01:54just because Deshaun Watson is a pariah in the city.
01:58I want to make sure he's really good and ready.
02:01Now, I would still play him tomorrow,
02:03but that's not my decision, yes.
02:05So for the whole, for at least this whole week,
02:08I know you've said it more,
02:09but you've been pretty stand fast
02:12and Shadur is going to play more than Watson this year.
02:14I do believe so, yes.
02:15What gives you this confidence?
02:17Because I think the other guy's broken.
02:19I think the other guy's just completely terrible.
02:22Okay, I think he's broken too,
02:22but apparently Todd Munkin doesn't think he's broken
02:24because he's starting the season
02:26as the starting quarterback.
02:27Totally get that.
02:28But I think that he thought
02:29that there might still be something there.
02:31And again, this is speculative.
02:33Absolutely speculative.
02:34He thought there might be something there.
02:36I think he took the job.
02:37And the way it sounds like to their...
02:38Now, there's been a lot of people hearing things
02:40and making up their own thing,
02:41so we can play it again and go back and forth.
02:43But this is what I'm thinking.
02:45He thought Deshaun Watson would be the starter.
02:47Like, your bridge quarterback was already here.
02:50We talked about all these guys.
02:51I'm like, guys,
02:51they got a really expensive bridge quarterback already.
02:53That's your bridge quarterback.
02:55I think he thought that he might be better than what he is.
02:57And then he takes the job,
02:59and Deshaun Watson's still Deshaun Watson,
03:01the Watson the we've all seen.
03:03And then Shadur, as he says in this clip,
03:06proved to be a little bit better during the offseason,
03:08working hard, doing those things.
03:10But he's not to the level where Todd Munkin is comfortable
03:14in starting him yet.
03:15Right, and how's he going to get that work in?
03:17Because Todd even said in his press conferences,
03:20I think it was yesterday or the day before,
03:21that once the season gets going,
03:23Shadur's really not getting reps with the ones at all.
03:26Yeah, but that's...
03:27I think the work he got in was...
03:29That's welcome to life in the NFL.
03:30That's every backup quarterback in the NFL.
03:31Like, that's just the deal.
03:32And that's why I'm critical of them not playing him tomorrow.
03:34And the supporters have always said,
03:36well, he needs...
03:37It's not fair.
03:38He doesn't get these reps.
03:39But that's the deal, man.
03:42And so I just don't understand how anyone,
03:44after knowing what we know now
03:46and after the way the weekend went down
03:48and we still just came out and went with Watson,
03:50that anyone would say,
03:51oh, Shadur, barring a Watson injury,
03:55that Shadur would ever overtake him,
03:57he's not going to get the opportunities
03:59to overtake Deshaun Watson.
04:01I just think...
04:01I do think we will get to a point
04:03where his play will be just so bad.
04:07There's nothing that gives me any confidence
04:08in Deshaun Watson whatsoever
04:10that he's going to be able to do well.
04:11Well, did you see, though...
04:13There's nothing.
04:13What they started running a lot more in practice,
04:16which I think is probably...
04:18It's not passes.
04:19Probably...
04:19Well, you're right.
04:20It's RPO and it's read option runs.
04:22And they're...
04:23I think all along they were going to save that stuff.
04:26You know, you weren't necessarily...
04:27And not do it in the preseason.
04:28Yeah, you weren't necessarily going to see that stuff
04:30because I think that's going to be
04:32a big part of their offense, to be honest.
04:34And Shadur...
04:35And you're not really running that stuff with Shadur.
04:37And think about this, too,
04:38is that, you know,
04:39they put him in there originally,
04:41Shadur last year,
04:42before he was ready.
04:43They did not want him to play
04:45right then and there.
04:46The whole conversation was,
04:47well, he might get a handful of games
04:48or a couple of games at the end of the year.
04:50And then Dylan Gabriel had the concussion
04:52and off Shadur went.
04:53And honestly, after the Ravens game,
04:55which he did start to play decently
04:57right towards the end of the Ravens game.
04:58And they also traded to quarterbacks before that.
05:00Yeah, exactly.
05:01So I don't know.
05:01And you saw what Jason said,
05:03where he's like,
05:03this is going to be a redshirt year.
05:05Albert Breer said,
05:05this is going to be a redshirt year.
05:06He wasn't really supposed to play.
05:07He played seven games.
05:08He started seven.
05:09Was it start seven games
05:10or play in eight games?
05:11Which one was it?
05:11Started seven.
05:12Started seven, played in eight.
05:13So things don't always go
05:15the way that they're laid out to be.
05:16And I think Todd Munkin was thinking,
05:19he's not ready.
05:21But Todd Munkin would turn right around and go,
05:23yeah, I know he's supposed to get ready,
05:24but he had way more first team reps
05:26than he had last year.
05:27The only thing that I criticize,
05:29the thing that the difference is
05:31that I criticize,
05:31not the only thing,
05:32the thing I criticize is that
05:34if you think it's operational,
05:37why isn't he playing on Thursday?
05:39Because he can get good operations in.
05:41I just don't need to see anything more
05:42out of Dylan Gabriel.
05:43I'm interested and curious to see
05:45what we have in tail and green.
05:47Like that doesn't get me going.
05:49And I can't be afraid
05:50that a guy is going to get injured
05:51based on that.
05:52So I do believe that sooner than later,
05:55because I have zero faith
05:57in Deshaun Watson,
05:58that Shador will get another crack
05:59at this thing.
06:00You could see early on
06:01in the off season
06:02that Shador was getting better.
06:04And that's when the decision was made.
06:06Okay, let's open this up.
06:08Had we made that decision
06:09earlier in camp,
06:10Deshaun is so much further ahead
06:12just in terms of being around
06:13a number of offenses.
06:14In order to get Shador up to speed,
06:16we divide it,
06:16we turn it into a competition
06:17and he takes advantage of it
06:19and really does continue to improve,
06:21continue to each week
06:23get better with his command,
06:24the operation,
06:25everything about the offense.
06:27And so we come back for training camp,
06:28keep the same thing going.
06:29But we needed Shador
06:30to really beat out Deshaun
06:32with being the first game
06:33being on the road,
06:34being in Jacksonville
06:35and then Tampa
06:36without throwing him
06:37out there to start the season
06:39from an operation standpoint
06:40being on the road.
06:41Even though last weekend
06:42didn't go Deshaun's way,
06:44the full body of work
06:45said at this time,
06:46he gives us the best chance to win.
06:47I think the coaches believe that,
06:49our players on offense believe that,
06:50and that's the direction we went.
06:52Okay, so he went in
06:54believing it was going to be Deshaun Watson.
06:56Then he saw the hard work
06:57and he might have gotten
06:58the golden horse head
06:59from Shador,
07:00platinum horse head,
07:01either way.
07:02He got,
07:03yeah,
07:03he got some plaster,
07:06porcelain,
07:06porcelain.
07:07I think it was porcelain horse head.
07:08He did it.
07:09Yeah,
07:09he got a porcelain horse head
07:10from Shador Sanders.
07:11That opened things up a little.
07:13That's a joke.
07:14He saw what Shador Sanders was doing,
07:16decided to open up the competition.
07:18And I think that,
07:19and we've said this a bunch,
07:21he just may not think
07:22that Shador Sanders is ready yet.
07:24And so he's not going to put
07:25Shador Sanders out there
07:26and double down on bad.
07:28Like,
07:29to put him out there,
07:30like,
07:31as of right now,
07:33like,
07:33we did this argument,
07:34remember this argument
07:35with all,
07:35what's his name,
07:36the kid from Notre Dame,
07:37Deshaun Kaiser.
07:39We had this fight.
07:40Remember,
07:40you and I had a knockdown drag out
07:42every single morning.
07:43Who's the best quarterback
07:44on the team?
07:45Deshaun Kaiser.
07:46Yeah,
07:46but that doesn't mean
07:47he's the most ready.
07:49Like,
07:49Shador,
07:50I do believe is better
07:51than Deshaun Watson
07:52because I think
07:53Deshaun Watson is broken.
07:55Shador is not a basket case.
07:57I think Deshaun Watson is.
07:58So even if he hasn't
07:59demonstrated that
08:00to this point,
08:01you just think it.
08:02Well,
08:03I,
08:03it's,
08:04I think I've seen better play
08:06out of Shador Sanders
08:07from what I've seen.
08:09But I don't,
08:10but that doesn't mean
08:11he has a better grasp
08:12on the offense
08:12and readiness
08:14to go out there
08:15and compete.
08:16Like,
08:16there is,
08:17you notice this,
08:18I just want to point this out.
08:20There,
08:20as much as fans
08:21dislike Deshaun Watson,
08:23his teammates seem
08:23to be down with him.
08:25Well,
08:25notice,
08:26I do want to make this point.
08:27And so there might be
08:27a confidence in veterans
08:28there that he knows
08:30what to do in the huddle.
08:31We have not seen
08:32a trickle,
08:33which always happens
08:34in sports,
08:34especially football.
08:36We have not seen
08:37a bunch of reports
08:38that the Browns
08:39are starting the wrong guy
08:40from inside the building.
08:41No.
08:41You are not seeing that.
08:43Normally,
08:43players are so many players.
08:45In fact,
08:45many of them won't even
08:46be on this team.
08:48So,
08:49they would have no failure
08:51to get that message out
08:53if it was true.
08:54Like,
08:54if there was
08:57this increasing army
08:58of Browns players
08:59who are like,
09:00no,
09:00no,
09:01no,
09:01they're starting
09:01the wrong guy.
09:02No,
09:03no,
09:03no,
09:03no,
09:03no,
09:03no,
09:04Shador has proven
09:05it every day.
09:06Like,
09:06that gets out
09:06all the time.
09:07It always gets out.
09:08And that has not happened.
09:10So,
09:10does that make you
09:11think at all?
09:12Like,
09:12hold on,
09:13maybe there truly
09:14is a belief
09:15that Deshaun
09:16has been the better guy
09:17and will be the better guy?
09:19It could be.
09:20I know,
09:20and you don't think
09:21he could be
09:22because we just think
09:24he's so broken
09:25that mentally
09:25he can't do it.
09:26But if the players
09:27thought that,
09:28they would certainly
09:29get the message out.
09:30Remember,
09:30it's their careers
09:31too on the line.
09:32But then again,
09:32if one guy's...
09:33If the receivers
09:34thought,
09:35holy cow,
09:36no,
09:37we're going to battle
09:38with the wrong guy,
09:39like,
09:39they have their ways
09:40to get that message out.
09:41It does not happen.
09:42Okay,
09:42like,
09:42use the John...
09:43But what I'm pointing out
09:44is this.
09:45Like,
09:45use the John...
09:45I think you're trying
09:46to trap me
09:47and I don't like it,
09:47so you're going
09:48to get me upset,
09:49but I'm trying to explain
09:50it here.
09:51It's like,
09:52Deshaun Watson,
09:53if he's able...
09:53Let's just use
09:54the John Gruden line,
09:55right?
09:57He covers his ears.
09:59Deshaun Watson hears it,
10:00goes in,
10:00flip right,
10:01double,
10:01X-Jet,
10:0136-counter naked raise,
10:03and he's able to do it,
10:04and they get it,
10:05and on to,
10:06ready?
10:06Like,
10:06that's it.
10:08And Shador Sanders
10:09goes in there,
10:10and it's...
10:11Because the only...
10:12He just kind of
10:13hems and haws,
10:14and well,
10:1436...
10:15Like,
10:16whatever.
10:17There's a problem there,
10:20operationally,
10:21all right?
10:22What I've seen,
10:23what the fans have seen,
10:24is one guy played
10:25better and more confidently.
10:26That's Shador Sanders.
10:27In the last game.
10:28In the last game.
10:28That was not the case
10:29in the first game.
10:30People have forgotten
10:31the Bears game,
10:32like,
10:32all together.
10:33Yes,
10:33I understand that.
10:34But when you saw one guy
10:35play so horrifically bad,
10:37and then they make the thing,
10:38that's what you go with.
10:40I neither have been
10:42outrageously good,
10:42but I do think that a lot
10:44of fans are going to go,
10:45man,
10:45Deshaun Watson's
10:46looking like garbage.
10:46He's supposed to be way
10:47better than the other one.
10:48The other guy,
10:49he's supposed to be
10:50a fifth-round pick,
10:50but he's looked better.
10:51So it hasn't been,
10:52like,
10:52night and day better,
10:53but one guy I think
10:54that you would look at
10:55if you were just watching
10:56camp,
10:57going to camp,
10:57observing it,
10:58you'd say,
10:59yeah,
10:59I think maybe
10:59Shador Sanders
11:00has been slightly better.
11:01Is there a chance
11:02that Watson's been
11:03crushing him
11:04and all the other stuff?
11:05Probably.
11:06That's the only thing
11:07I could think of.
11:07That would be a thing
11:08that would matter
11:09to the coach.
11:09Yes,
11:10that's what I'm saying.
11:11So if the guy
11:12is going out there,
11:13again,
11:13you sound like
11:14you're attacking me,
11:14if he goes out there
11:16and he's able
11:16to get the play out,
11:18you're going to have
11:19more confidence
11:19in the guy
11:20who has the knowledge
11:21of the offense.
11:22Shador may be
11:23on his way,
11:24but if you're starting
11:25from behind,
11:26I'm not going to put
11:27you from behind.
11:28So if you and Owen
11:29are in a quarterback
11:30competition
11:31and Owen knows
11:32the offense,
11:32but you're the one
11:33who has the arm strength
11:34and I know you can
11:35play better eventually,
11:36I'm not just going
11:37to send you out there
11:38in harm's way.
11:40It's the same reason
11:40why the Raiders
11:41got Kirk Cousins
11:42when they got
11:43Fernando Mendoza.
11:44You don't just throw
11:45the guy out there
11:45if he doesn't know
11:46what the hell he's doing
11:47because you're going
11:47to make a really
11:48bad investment then.
11:50You get what I'm saying?
11:52So you try to take care
11:53of whatever investment
11:55you have.
11:55And Shador Sanders
11:56may not end up
11:57being some sort
11:57of investment,
11:58but he's certainly
11:59an investment
11:59to the emotions
12:00and the thoughts
12:01of the fans.
12:03Plus, he's played
12:04pretty decently,
12:04so you might give
12:06him a chance
12:06because I think
12:07the other guy
12:07is a basket case.
12:08I think what
12:09the big mistake
12:11I'm seeing,
12:12like I heard
12:12the afternoon show
12:13and they're just
12:14talking like
12:15these have all
12:16been 10-8
12:18domination rounds
12:19every day
12:19by Shador
12:20and I'm like
12:21nobody within
12:22the building
12:22thinks that.
12:22No.
12:23Because that message
12:24would have gotten out.
12:25If Todd Munkin
12:26is playing
12:26the wrong quarterback,
12:28these players
12:29in the year 2026,
12:30whether it's
12:31their Twitch feeds,
12:32remember we dissected
12:34Jerry Judy,
12:35like where are they?
12:36Which one ended up
12:37being a deep fake.
12:38Yeah, where is
12:39all the messaging?
12:40Like if these guys
12:41thought,
12:42especially the receivers,
12:44if they thought
12:44that we're playing
12:45the wrong guy,
12:46they have their ways
12:46to get it out there.
12:47And they haven't
12:48gotten it out there.
12:49As much as everybody
12:50doesn't like Deshaun Watson,
12:51it doesn't seem
12:52that his teammates
12:52don't dislike him.
12:54Yeah, and Albert Breer
12:55has come on.
12:56He said he wanted
12:57to be as fair as possible.
12:58Yesterday on the afternoon show,
12:59he said he talked
13:00to people in Buffalo
13:01and he talked,
13:02remember, Buffalo,
13:03we just saw the game
13:04where Shador
13:05outperformed Watson
13:06to a big deal.
13:07He talked to people
13:08in Buffalo,
13:09they're like,
13:09no, Watson's better.
13:10He talked to people
13:11in Chicago,
13:11no, Watson's better.
13:12He talks to people
13:13with the Browns,
13:14Watson's better.
13:15Zach Jackson,
13:16and he hates
13:16Deshaun Watson
13:17with every fiber
13:18of his being.
13:19He doesn't want
13:19to be fair.
13:20And he's like,
13:20no, Deshaun Watson's
13:21been better.
13:22Yet, I'm hearing
13:23people on the internet
13:24dissect a play here,
13:26a play there,
13:26and they're like,
13:27oh my God,
13:27Watson is getting
13:28obliterated in this contest.
13:29It's like,
13:30no, you're not there
13:31every day.
13:31You're not there every day.
13:32You want that to be true,
13:33but it's not been the case.
13:35In so many ways,
13:35it is a secret society
13:37when they decide it to be,
13:38and when it's not,
13:39that's when things
13:39start going to hell.
13:40So if they go out there
13:41against Jacksonville
13:42and Deshaun Watson
13:42throws a bunch of picks
13:43and he's leaving
13:45Jerry Judy open
13:46or Casey Concepcion open
13:47and we're watching this
13:48going,
13:48what the hell has he seen?
13:50Yeah, guys are going
13:50to start pitching.
13:51Yeah.
13:52They're going to start
13:52complaining because
13:53they're not winning games.
13:54And it's up to Shador
13:55to get himself ready
13:57to do that.
13:57He's definitely,
13:58like you said this,
14:00yeah, he looks like
14:01he's getting better.
14:01He's definitely gotten better.
14:03But if he's not ready
14:04to start,
14:05he's not ready
14:05to conduct the offense,
14:07then I'm going to,
14:08A, hurt my football team
14:10even worse,
14:11and B, I'll hurt
14:12whatever future he has.
14:13So there is a responsibility.
14:15As much as the fans
14:16hate that,
14:17and as much as I even
14:18dislike it,
14:19there is a responsibility
14:20towards it.
