00:00Todd Munkin named his captains today for the entire season?
00:05No, just for game one.
00:06They are not doing season captains.
00:09Why?
00:10Is this normal?
00:12Is this something that normal teams do?
00:14Munkin, I think, said this is what he prefers.
00:16Why does he prefer it, though?
00:18Because he knows that in two weeks, in three weeks,
00:21Deshaun Watson's going to get benched,
00:23and they already gave Deshaun Watson the C.
00:25I think that's part of it.
00:26I mean, remember last year, Joe Flacco was named captain,
00:28and he played four games.
00:30And then we didn't have a quarterback captain the rest of the year.
00:32And they traded that.
00:32The quarterback, I understand people get mad, like,
00:34oh, your quarterback doesn't need to be captain.
00:36Yes, he does.
00:37Like, your quarterback has to be a captain on the team.
00:39Well, lucky you, Michael.
00:41Deshaun Watson is one of your four or five captains.
00:43And I believe the quarterback will be, whoever it is,
00:46will be the captain every single week.
00:47I think this is just the way of, yes, as you said,
00:50avoiding not naming Deshaun a captain for the year
00:53when he may not actually be around the team in the back part of the year.
00:56And we can just say the quarterback is the captain.
00:59It just depends on who the quarterback is.
01:01Well, I mean, this is the same player who the backup quarterback
01:04in Jameis Winston was doing pregame and postgame speeches.
01:08He seemed like the leader in the locker room.
01:11Obviously, we've talked ad nauseum about the leadership void
01:14that has been in this organization.
01:16This is also the same team, different coaching staff,
01:18that gave him a game ball after he, like, stunk in his first win
01:21with the Browns.
01:22So, and Nick Chubb had, you know, 150 million rushing yards
01:26and they didn't give it to him.
01:29I, I, I just, I don't, so you don't, you don't really care
01:33that Deshaun Watson's a captain.
01:36I mean, I knew it was going to happen.
01:37Your quarterback needs to be a captain.
01:39I don't think he needs, well.
01:40I think he does.
01:41I think what it's Deshaun Watson, again, it's just another indication to me
01:44that, that Todd Munkin doesn't really care about what his fans think.
01:48Okay, but again, if we're talking about a season in which Deshaun Watson
01:51probably is going to start 17 games, if Deshaun's a captain
01:54when Shador's playing quarterback, you can't have that.
01:56I don't, no, I'm not saying that.
01:58So, unless you can move the captaincy.
01:59Yes.
02:00Like, you can't do that.
02:01I would love.
02:02So, just do the weekly captain thing where you can just name captains
02:05every week and the quarterback will pretty much get named
02:07every single week.
02:08And then once it shifts to Shador, Shador is captain.
02:12Or if Dylan Gabriel starts, Dylan Gabriel's a captain.
02:14Or, like, whatever.
02:15Your quarterback needs to be a captain.
02:16That's just, I guess, I'm old school.
02:19I don't even know what to think about it.
02:20It's the same way in college.
02:22Look at all these college teams.
02:23The quarterback is always captain.
02:24He has to be captain.
02:25Yeah, but the quarterback in many college programs isn't booed relentlessly
02:29before they even take a step on the field.
02:31And it kind of seems like they're working around the idea of him getting booed
02:34when he comes out of Huntington Bank Field.
02:36Okay, if you had two offensive captains, then you're not going to name
02:38a quarterback captain.
02:39Quinshawn Judkins.
02:41I'm not naming Quinshawn captain.
02:42Why?
02:43I mean, why would we name Quinshawn Judkins a captain?
02:48Because he's one of the bright spots that's really good on the offensive side
02:51of the ball, and he's not a rookie.
02:52Part of the reason that people don't like Quinshawn being named captain
02:55is the off-the-field stuff.
02:56Do we remember last summer with Quinshawn Judkins?
02:58No, I get that.
02:59But, I mean, we're not.
03:00We're going to name Jerry Judy captain?
03:01Like, Harold Fannin, fine.
03:03Okay?
03:04Harold Fannin and an offensive lineman.
03:05The problem is none of your offensive linemen have ever been here before.
03:08Harold Fannin and Spencer Finneau.
03:10And then, on the defensive side, Carson Swessinger.
03:13I would rather name Rocket Sanders as a captain than Deshaun Watson.
03:19Because he's going to be one of the players that goes out on the coin toss.
03:22It's just another spotlight where the entire world is looking at you and only you
03:28in a Browns uniform.
03:29I don't love that.
03:31Any attention on this guy, I don't like whatsoever.
03:34The team loves him, though.
03:35And, like, the team does view him as a captain.
03:38And, look, I can't say anything for how the team is.
03:41And, I get, like, we discussed Jerry Judy.
03:42He's probably a big fan of him.
03:45And, I know they have to rally around the starting quarterback.
03:47But, like, as a fan, the captains are supposed to be the guys.
03:51You want to talk about old school.
03:52The captains are supposed to be the guys, to me, that everybody on the fan base can rally around.
03:58That those are the guys that you buy jerseys of.
04:00That you know they're going to be consistent parts of this team.
04:03Community leaders.
04:04Deshaun Watson has been none of those things whatsoever.
04:07It just feels like they're just giving him the captaincy, the C on his chest, because he's the one that
04:14beat out Shador Sanders.
04:15They're naming the quarterback captain.
04:16That's what they're doing with the weekly quarterback thing.
04:18Because then the moment Shador steps in, Shador's going to have the C.
04:21I also don't really like, I mean, do you need an offensive captain?
04:25Like, is that a hard and fast rule in the NFL?
04:27Or is that just, like, the way things are?
04:29You can name as many as you want.
04:30I think the Rams named, like, seven captains.
04:32Oh, I did see that.
04:33Miles Garrett is also a captain.
04:34But, like, they have, like, seven captains.
04:37So, like, there's no limit.
04:38Most teams do two offense, two defense, and a specialist.
04:41Like, that's normal.
04:42Like, five team captains.
04:44But for almost every team, the quarterback is one.
04:47Like, Cam Ward last year was a rookie.
04:49Number one overall pick.
04:49He was named captain because he's the quarterback.
04:51Well, because he was going away the start.
04:53And, again, I don't love how quickly you're just excusing all the outside noise with Deshaun Watson.
04:58Like, I get that they don't have to worry about that.
05:01Why do they care what the fans think about their captains?
05:04They clearly don't.
05:04And that's the thing is that this is just another indication that they do not care what you think.
05:08Todd Munkin has said it time and again since he named Deshaun Watson the starting quarterback that he don't care
05:13what the guys in 535 think.
05:15He does not care what the guys on 92-3 the fan thing.
05:17He cares simply about what's going on in the locker room.
05:20But there's been no olive branch extended to the fan base whatsoever about, hey, man, we understand the pain and
05:27the anguish you have gone through since this guy's been here in 2022.
05:30But we just don't give a damn.
05:32Well, and look, and this is one of those topics that, like, as much as it would be nice to,
05:37you know, have a fan base that gets listened to, the moment that an organization starts listening to the fan
05:41base, they should fold.
05:42I'm not saying to name.
05:44You shouldn't be making decisions based on what your fan base wants, like, in terms of the on-field product
05:49like that.
05:49The moment you do that, you should fold.
05:51What does putting a C on a guy's chest or giving a game ball after a horrific performance because we
05:59need to boost a guy's ego that's already making $230 million and has a wife and his entire life set
06:05up for him, travels God knows where in the globe the second that he gets out of Cleveland, which is
06:10the second that he wants to.
06:12Why do we need to continue to appease that?
06:16Like, what is the point?
06:17I think that's the point for me.
06:18It's just this added frustration that whether or not it actually needs to be there, I don't know, but it's
06:25just something.
06:26It's just another tiny little twisting of the knife that to Sean Watson's not only going to be the starting
06:32quarterback, but he's going to be a captain.
06:33And we're going to continue to feed this idea that everything's okay.
06:38Everything's not okay.
06:39The fan base basically booed him off the field.
06:43The last time he was over here, they're starting him part and parcel.
06:47This is Todd Munkin's words because they're starting the season with two road games.
06:52I just don't get it.
06:54So, but, so we started this conversation by saying, why are they having weekly captains?
07:00If you want an olive branch, I think that kind of is.
07:03Because what Todd Munkin's telling you is Deshaun Watson's not a permanent captain.
07:06We're not having any permanent captains.
07:08Okay.
07:08So Deshaun Watson's not a permanent captain.
07:10He's just a captain for this week.
07:11He might, I mean, he will be captain as long as he's the starter because the quarterback will be a
07:15captain, but he's not a captain all year.
07:18And I think that kind of is them kind of reading the room and being like, hey, we can't name
07:21Deshaun Watson a full season captain.
07:23Also consider that he's not going to be on the field the whole year.
07:25Well, are they doing that as an olive branch or because they know that there's a big question mark as
07:29to whether or not he's going to be the starting quarterback every year?
07:32You'll never get the answer so we can speculate on it either way.
07:33But, like, if you want at least something to grasp onto, he's not coming out and saying, hey, Deshaun Watson's
07:39a permanent captain and everyone else is weekly captains.
07:41Like, you know, he's saying we're having weekly captains chosen on by the coaches.
07:45Deshaun Watson is a captain this week.
07:46Doesn't mean he's a quarterback next week.
07:48He will be.
07:48But it's weekly captains.
07:50Then when Shador is the starting quarterback, guess what?
07:53Shador Sanders is a captain because he's the quarterback.
07:55And that's just what it should be.
07:56Like, again, call me old school.
07:58Call me other stuff.
07:59It's a bad, bad look when your quarterback is not a captain.
08:02I mean, we've somehow functioned for how many, you know, years since Deshaun's been here where he hasn't been the
08:07captain.
08:07Yes, he has.
08:08He's been the captain every single year he's been the starter.
08:10Okay.
08:10Well, that's.
08:11But that's the case.
08:12It's true.
08:12Last year he wasn't because he wasn't available to play.
08:15The first year he was here, he's not named captain.
08:17Coach Kobe Bursette was because Kobe Bursette was the starting quarterback.
08:19The starting quarterback is always named captain.
08:21Like, every team in the NFL.
08:23Okay.
08:23That's just the way this goes.
08:24Like, I understand people can get upset about it.
08:27Guys, it's a C on his chest.
08:29It matters to the team.
08:30It doesn't matter to you.
08:31I think it does.
08:32Because he's the first, like, representation of the Browns when they go out for the coin toss.
08:38Oh, wow.
08:38It's a coin toss.
08:39Like, it's a C on his chest.
08:42Like, I understand for a lot of people.
08:44Your lack of fan understanding is upsetting me.
08:48What I'm saying is I don't know why you guys thought he wasn't going to be named captain.
08:51Like, on what planet did you think the Browns weren't going to name him a captain?
08:54Have you not been here for the last how many years?
08:57I know that you were in Michigan.
08:58But, like, this is the guy that's caused us how much crap?
09:02I'm trying not to swear.
09:03This is the guy that's caused us so much angst.
09:06He...
09:07I'm sorry.
09:09He basically called you out after we booed him, which we as fans are allowed to do.
09:14So, and then they went on and named him the starting quarterback.
09:17And then they gave him the C.
09:19They are not...
09:20They are discounting everything that has happened.
09:23I want to give you a chance to explain a little bit better yourself.
09:28Because when I get angsty, I tend to yell.
09:31And I think I pulled a muscle yelling at you last segment.
09:35So, not yelling at you, just yelling at the situation.
09:37I guess my biggest thing is, like, I...
09:41There has not been any addressing of what has happened to us as fans by the team.
09:49And it's just, like, kind of everywhere you turn, there's just a different indication of, like,
09:53man, they really just don't care about us.
09:55And even, again, like, I lost my cool, but knowing that, as a fan, they shouldn't have...
10:03Like, we shouldn't have any input other than ticket sales and merchandise and food.
10:10You know, stuff like that.
10:11Yeah.
10:12Basically, what I'm saying is, I'm not trying to be, like, non-sympathetic to the fans here.
10:18Like, Anthony, I...
10:19You know, and this is one of the things, like, you said, obviously, I'm from Michigan.
10:22But, I mean, don't pull a Ken Carman on me and go on the air and tell me that I'm
10:26not a Cleveland fan.
10:27Yeah, that was me.
10:27I'm sorry.
10:28I grew up a Cleveland fan, even though I grew up in Michigan.
10:31And so, like, I've been with you guys throughout this whole Deshaun Watson debacle.
10:36And it's not that I'm not sympathetic to the fans' cause.
10:39My point is, the moment that Deshaun Watson was named the starter,
10:44I have no idea what would lead you to believe that Deshaun Watson wouldn't be named captain for week one,
10:51for the season, whatever.
10:52That's all I'm saying.
10:53I'm not saying I don't agree with you that it's not a great look to name Deshaun Watson a captain.
10:58I understand that people will say, well, he should never be a captain because of the off-the-field stuff.
11:02And all this other...
11:03Like, I get it.
11:04Like, I'm not trying to tell the fans I don't hear you.
11:07What I'm trying to say is, I don't know why you would be naive enough
11:10to believe that he wasn't going to be named captain.
11:12That's it.
11:13Like, the quarterback of a National Football League team is going to be named captain.
11:18That's...
11:18I'm sorry if you guys disagree with that or if you think we should challenge the norm.
11:23By all means, push for that.
11:25That's the way that this goes in this league.
11:28Deshaun Watson, whether it was permanent year captain or whether it was week by week,
11:32which I actually, again, I'm arguing might actually be your olive branch from the organization
11:36of saying we're not making him a permanent captain.
11:38And we're just saying he's the captain probably as long as he's the starter.
11:42That's just what it's going to be.
11:43And if you actually thought that there was a chance that Deshaun Watson wasn't going to be named captain,
11:48that's on you for believing that.
11:51Because I just don't see any world where Deshaun Watson wasn't going to be named captain,
11:55at least for week one, or whether it was going to be for a permanent thing.
11:58I'm glad it's not a permanent thing.
12:00And whether or not we can just say it's because the Browns are admitting that Deshaun Watson
12:04isn't going to be starting all year.
12:05And so they're kind of covering themselves and saying we're going to have these ambiguous
12:09captains every week.
12:10Fine.
12:11I'll take it as kind of like, you know what, maybe they are hearing you out a little bit
12:15and saying, you know what, the fans don't really like this guy.
12:17He shouldn't be the face of our organization all the time.
12:21But like the quarterback kind of has to be captain or else it's kind of a bad look on your
12:24team
12:24if you're saying that your quarterback's not enough of a leader of the locker room.
12:28Not necessarily to the fans, but you need someone to go out there and lead that locker room
12:32and those players.
12:33And if it's not your quarterback, that is an awful look.
12:37So to me, they're kind of trying to thread a needle here.
12:41And I can understand if fans are upset about it.
12:43Like, again, I'm not unsympathetic to fans and how they feel about this.
12:47I totally get it.
12:48I'm just saying it's on you if you thought they weren't going to name Deshaun Watson a captain.
12:52It was always going to be the case if he was named the starter.
12:55Sorry for bringing up the year from Michigan.
12:59No, it's a rough thing because Ken has gone on in the mornings before and literally said
13:03I'm not a Michigan fan when Ken and I had this conversation before.
13:07And he went on air when I couldn't defend myself and said that.
13:09And everyone here knows, yes, I'm from Michigan, but I'm a Cleveland fan.
13:12Do you forget me?
13:14Anthony, we're good, man.
13:15Yay!
13:16We're boys.
13:17Yeah!
13:17All right.
13:18I promise not to do that again.
13:21Leadership thing, you mentioned.
13:22Yeah.
13:22I just, you know, I did that with Calavita frequently about I bring up, like, you're from Philly.
13:27You don't understand.
13:28Well, but he actually isn't a Cleveland fan.
13:30Oh.
13:31Oh, you want to make that happen?
13:33Did you imagine working here and not being a Cleveland fan?
13:35Come on.
13:36That's crazy.
13:37That's crazy.
13:37Working on the top morning show in town.
13:39Anywho.
13:41So you mentioned the leadership thing.
13:42And that is probably, like, from an actual, like, in-the-building standpoint, my biggest hang-up, is that I
13:49don't believe that Deshaun has demonstrated anything since he's gotten here to that building that he is a leader.
13:57And if your captains are supposed to be your leaders, then either something changed with Deshaun, he's turned a new
14:06leaf, Todd Munkin believes, you know, foolishly that he's a leader.
14:12Or they're just giving him the C because he's the starting quarterback, and that is kind of what you do.
14:17Yeah, I mean, it could be a little bit of both.
14:19But, like, I can tell you, as people have said and as we've had coaches say at other players, like,
14:25this locker room likes Deshaun Watson.
14:28They respect him.
14:30Like, they view him as that leader figure, the quarterback.
14:32Listen to how Shador talks about Deshaun.
14:34Yep.
14:34How Deshaun helped him last year, even though he wasn't playing.
14:37And Deshaun has still kind of been a strong voice to try to help bring the young guys along.
14:41Like, I think this year maybe Deshaun, like, got to the point where he's just kind of accepted that this
14:48is his last shot.
14:49So, like, I at least, I better put my best mindset into this, and I better try to be this
14:54leader, and I'm going to try to be there for my team and do all this stuff.
14:58And then whatever happened after the Bills game happened, like, he didn't, for whatever reason, he was naive enough to
15:04think he wasn't going to get booed.
15:06And then he did, and he snapped.
15:07And something broke, and I'm not excusing that.
15:10What I'm saying is that that happened, and that's a thing.
15:13I just don't, the Browns don't care about that.
15:17And the Browns believe that maybe he has turned the corner.
15:20Maybe he has shown that he wants to be a better leader for this team and make them move forward.
15:25Again, that's what's weird about the whole weekly captains thing, because, like, no other team does it this way, which,
15:31again, it could be one of two things.
15:33I think it's more likely the team's pretty much saying we know he's probably not going to be the starter
15:37all year, and it's a bad look to have a permanent captain that basically we might be telling to stay
15:41home by week 10.
15:42But also, it's a way to kind of tell the fans, hey, look, we have a lot of other leaders
15:47on this team that we'd like to give the opportunity to have the captainship, so we're going to have it
15:51by week-by-week basis.
15:52And you know what? I'll give Todd Munkin at least, you know, Deshaun Watson's going to be a captain in
15:58Jacksonville.
15:58Let's see what he does for Tampa Bay.
16:00Like, maybe he rotates around all these guys and says, you know what, Deshaun, maybe our quarterback won't be captain
16:04against Tampa Bay.
16:05Maybe it will be Fannin and Jerry Judy.
16:07Like, we'll see.
16:08Like, I will give him that opportunity, and I will be the first to put my hand up on the
16:12afternoon show and say, hey, look, we're naming a quarterback on offense that isn't a quarterback.
16:19Like, fine, prove me wrong.
16:21I'll believe it when I see it.
16:22I guess the, like, we spent so long.
16:25It makes me feel a lot better if it's just like you just happen to win the starting quarterback job
16:31so you get the C and then we set it and forget it.
16:33As opposed to if they believe he's a leader because we did it with Miles Garrett for so long that
16:41we wanted him to be the leader because he's the best guy on the team.
16:45He's the generational player that we knew that he has been basically since he got here.
16:50And we just tried to force him into this position that he was just not suited for.
16:55There's leaders, and then there's people that aren't leaders or lead by example.
16:59And it's okay if you're not a, you know, rah-rah, Jameis Winston-style leader, but you got to be
17:07honest with yourself in the locker room.
17:09I've seen it so much in the past with Kevin Stefanski and Deshaun Watson where they're just forcing Deshaun into
17:16this, like, leadership, everybody likes him role, that I'm just, like, scarred by it.
17:21And this just feels like another indication of it.
17:24So I will say this is a little bit different just in the sense of, like I said, I do
17:28feel like maybe we have a bit more buy-in from Deshaun just because he's that desperate and he understands
17:32the situation he's in.
17:33But also, didn't we just do this with Miles Garrett?
17:35We forced that C on his chest every single year he was here.
17:38And he didn't want it.
17:40Yeah.
17:40Yeah, no, you're right.
17:41And to be fair, he doesn't want it.
17:43I mean, he's a captain in L.A., but there's, like, whatever, seven other captains.
17:46So, like, he can kind of fade into the background.
17:48Yeah, but also every other video that I've seen since he's gotten to L.A., he's, like, the greatest locker
17:52room guy ever.
17:53He's such a team.
17:53We forced this on Miles Garrett for so long.
17:56And nobody, I mean, I understand it wasn't the off-the-field stuff.
17:59And, again, I'm not trying to be, again, all this other stuff about Deshaun, whatever.
18:05We did this about Miles Garrett, and he wasn't a vocal leader.
18:08He wasn't a captain.
18:09Like, if I was on the Browns team and I had to vote for captain, I would not have voted
18:14for Miles Garrett.
18:15That's just the way it would have worked.
18:17100%, yeah.
18:18And so, but we did it.
18:19We put the C on his chest every single year despite.
18:21So, why is this any different?
18:24And I understand it's because he hasn't played well.
18:26At least Miles went out there and played well and did do the lead by example thing.
18:29They did the same thing with Nick Chubb, and Nick Chubb was great, obviously.
18:32He's going to go in the Ring of Honor someday.
18:34Nick Chubb was not a vocal leader.
18:35I wouldn't have voted Nick Chubb as captain.
18:37But that's the thing.
18:38Like, there's certain players who are captains, and then there's some players who are just leaders by example.
18:42You need both on your team.
18:43But if it's like, you know, Deshaun seems like a very quiet person, and I don't think he loves talking
18:49to the media.
18:50Okay, that's fine.
18:52He just hasn't been around the organization because the second that he got hurt, you know, I'm looking at Instagram
18:58of pictures of him in foreign countries I've never even heard of before.
19:02And so, he's not a presence in the locker room like Dak Prescott was when he got hurt.
19:07And he also hasn't led by example because his example has been terrible, and I don't want anyone to follow
19:13in his lead.
19:14So, I just think that, like, any time an organization flips over a GM or a head coach, and I
19:20know it's basically all the same players from last year,
19:22you want the organization to learn something from why the last guy didn't work out.
19:28And it felt like the leadership vacuum and forcing that leadership thing, like we were mentioning,
19:33was a big part of why Kevin Stefanski's message just ended up running thin.
19:39And I just don't want Todd Munkin to make the same mistakes when I do believe that he is a
19:44very good coach
19:44and that he is a good enough leader to get these young guys in a good enough position.
19:49Yeah, and like I said, I guess I maybe misspoke last segment when I said, you know, the captaincy doesn't
19:56matter to the fans.
19:57Like, I'm sure it does, but at the end of the day, what the captains are important for is the
20:01team.
20:01Maybe it does.
20:02You know, I'm interested to hear, like, what y'all say in the afternoon tomorrow, what Ken and Anthony, what
20:06Baskin and Phelps and Jake say.
20:08I'm just, and I know Nick's very passionate about this.
20:10Like, Nick Wilson's the same way.
20:11Like, he did not want Deshaun being named captain.
20:14I kind of, I would have said the same thing.
20:16Like, I just think you're naive if you don't think he's going to be named captain.
20:19That's just the reality of the situation.
20:21Like, the quarterback's going to get named captain of the team.
20:23I can understand why you don't want it.
20:24I think you're crazy if you didn't think it was going to happen.
20:26And, like, I'm sorry if you're disappointed, but, like, you kind of set yourself up for that.
20:32And it's, like I said, if the captains are about leading the team, and if the team views Deshaun Watson
20:38as a leader, that's what matters here.
20:40And at the end of the day, Todd Munkin feels good enough about it where the coaches have gotten together
20:47and they have decided to name Deshaun Watson a captain for week one against Jacksonville.
20:50And if they feel like he is the best person to represent the team at the coin toss and lead
20:54the team into battle, so be it.
