00:03:22Grant me the grace to despise any unlawful pleasure and delight, and to avoid any excess in eating and drinking,

00:03:29and may I use with moderation and thanksgiving, whatever you do give me for the support of my poor body.

00:03:38So cleanse, I beg you, that it may relish nothing except that which is pleasing to you, and may find

00:16:18are you teaching with authority

00:16:21he even commands the unclean spirits

00:16:23and they obey him

00:16:25and so the news about him quickly spread

00:16:28throughout all the region around Galilee

00:16:35now as they left the synagogue

00:16:37they entered Simon and Andrew's house

00:16:39with James and John

00:16:42Simon's mother-in-law was lying down sick with a fever

00:16:46and so they spoke to Jesus at once about her

00:16:50he came and raised her up gently taking her hand

00:16:54the fever left her

00:16:56and she began to serve them

00:16:59when it was evening

00:17:00after sunset

00:17:01they brought to him

00:17:03all who were sick

00:17:04and demon-possessed

00:17:06the whole town gathered by the door

00:17:09so he healed many who were sick

00:17:11with various diseases

00:17:13and drove out many demons

00:17:16but he would not permit the demons to speak

00:17:18because they knew who he was

00:17:24then Jesus got up early in the morning

00:17:27whilst it was still dark

00:17:28and departed

00:17:29going to a deserted place

00:17:31and there he spent time in prayer

00:17:35Simon and his companions searched for him

00:17:38when they found him they said

00:17:40everyone is looking for you

00:17:43he replied

00:17:44let us go elsewhere

00:17:46into the surrounding villages

00:17:49so that I may preach there too

00:17:51for that is what I came out here to do

00:17:55so he went into all of Galilee

00:17:57preaching in their synagogues

00:18:00and casting out demons

00:18:04now a leper came to him

00:18:06and fell to his knees

00:18:08asking for help

00:18:10if you are willing

00:18:11you may make me clean

00:18:13he said

00:18:14moved with compassion

00:18:16Jesus stretched out his hand

00:18:18and touched him

00:18:19saying

00:18:20I am willing

00:18:21be clean

00:18:23the leprosy left him at once

00:18:26and he was clean

00:18:28immediately Jesus sent the man away

00:18:30with a very strong warning

00:18:32he said to him

00:18:33see that you do not say anything

00:18:35to anyone but go

00:18:37show yourself to a priest

00:18:39and bring the offering

00:18:40that Moses commanded

00:18:42for your cleansing

00:18:43as a testimony to them

00:18:46but as the man went out

00:18:48he began to announce it publicly

00:18:51and so the story spread widely

00:18:53and Jesus was no longer able

00:18:56to enter any town openly

00:18:58but stayed outside

00:19:00in remote places

00:19:02but still

00:19:03they kept coming to him

00:19:04from everywhere

00:19:07this is the word of the Lord

00:19:10thanks be to God

00:19:18the worship in the synagogue

00:19:20not having been instituted by Moses

00:19:23but gradually developed

00:19:25by the public need

00:19:26was a comparatively free

00:19:29and unconventional affair

00:19:32sometimes it would happen

00:19:34that a remarkable

00:19:35and serious looking stranger

00:19:36would be invited

00:19:38if they had a word of

00:19:39exhortation to save

00:19:40as we see

00:19:43in Acts chapter 13

00:19:45verse 15

00:19:47sometimes one presented himself

00:19:49as the custom of our Lord was

00:19:52Luke 4 16

00:19:55amid the dull mechanical tendencies

00:19:57which were then

00:19:58turning the hearts of Judaism

00:20:00to stone

00:20:01the synagogue may often

00:20:03be seen

00:20:04as a centre of life

00:20:06a rallying place

00:20:07of freedom

00:20:10in Galilee

00:20:11where such worship

00:20:12predominated over

00:20:14that of the remote temple

00:20:16and its hierarchy

00:20:17Jesus found his trusted followers

00:20:20and the nucleus

00:20:21of the church

00:20:22in foreign lands

00:20:25St Paul

00:20:26bore first to his brethren

00:20:28in their synagogues

00:20:29the strange tidings

00:20:30that their Messiah

00:20:31had expired

00:20:33upon a cross

00:20:58so this ought

00:20:59to be observed

00:21:05by methods

00:21:06the furthest

00:21:07from being

00:21:08revolutionary

00:21:10the institutions

00:21:11of his Asian land

00:21:12were corrupt

00:21:13well nigh to the core

00:21:14but he did not

00:21:16therefore make a clean sweep

00:21:18and began again

00:21:20he did not

00:21:21turn his back

00:21:21on the temple

00:21:22and the synagogue

00:21:23nor outrage

00:21:24the Sabbath

00:21:25nor come to destroy

00:21:26the law

00:21:27and the prophets

00:21:27but he paid

00:21:29his followers

00:21:30reverence

00:21:31the seat

00:21:32where the scribes

00:21:33and the Pharisees

00:21:34sat

00:21:37he drew the line

00:21:38of their false lives

00:21:39and perilous examples

00:21:41amid that evil generation

00:21:44he found soil

00:21:45wherein his seed

00:21:46might germinate

00:27:15which St Mark

00:27:16records

00:27:17with what

00:27:19sentiments

00:27:19should such

00:27:20a narrative

00:27:21be approached

00:27:23the evangelist

00:27:25connects

00:27:25it emphatically

00:27:27with Christ's

00:27:28assertion

00:27:29of authority

00:27:32immediately

00:27:32upon the

00:27:33impression

00:27:34which his

00:27:34manner of

00:27:35teaching

00:27:35produced
