00:22Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:29Who, when your disciples and friends deserted and left you
00:33Remained alone in the hands of sinful men
00:36Like a most gentle lamb
00:38Within the jaws of a ravenous wolf
00:43Strengthen my excessive weakness
00:45And confirm my too great unstableness
00:47By the support of your grace
00:49And join me to yourself with the bonds of love
00:53That I may neither have no wish nor the power
00:56Ever to depart or separate myself from you
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:04Who allowed yourself to be led around bound
01:07By an armed band and taken to Annas
01:12Allowing yourself to be stood before him
01:14As though you were a common criminal or robber
01:19O unspeakable gentleness of my Redeemer
01:22Look, while they take and drag and thrust you forward
01:27You uttered not a single word of complaint
01:30Or murmur or word of resistance
01:33But in silence you followed them wherever they led you
01:37Obeying their commands
01:39And permitted their wanton injuries to you
01:44Grant, O Lord, that these your virtues may shine in me
01:47To the everlasting glory of your name
01:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:54King of heaven and earth
01:55Who in great humility
01:57As poor and needy and of no account
02:00Was stood before the proud High Priest
02:03And most sweetly endured the dreadful blow
02:07Which his impious servant put upon you
02:12Restrain, I beg you
02:13In me all outbreak of anger and passion
02:17Suppress all acts of indignation
02:20And quench within me all desire of revenge
02:24That when I am provoked by injury
02:27I may not be disturbed
02:28I may offer no resistance
02:31May suffer no disquiet
02:34But endure everything with a quiet mind
02:36May I even repay evil with good
02:41Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
02:43Who permitted himself to be lead-boned
02:46In a shameful manner to Caiaphas
02:48That you might deliver us from the penalty
02:51Of eternal death
02:52Restoring to us true liberty
02:56Make me most ready
02:58To endure every reproach
02:59And all contempt for your name's sake
03:03Grant that in the very middle
03:05Of ridicule and outrage
03:06I may give you thanks with a perfect heart
03:09And by means of these trials
03:11May grow and increase more and more
03:14In your love
03:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:20Who, when three times denied
03:23By your Apostle Peter
03:26Mercifully turned and looked upon him
03:28With kindness
03:29And brought him to repentance
03:31And holy sorrow for his sin
03:33In like manner
03:34May you turn upon me also
03:37Your eye of mercy and love
03:39That I may weep over my past sins
03:42With the tears of true penitence
03:44And may never again commit them
03:47May I never be found sinning
03:49Against your goodness
03:50In word or deed
03:54Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:56Who stood before the elders
03:58And the people of the Jews
03:59With a calm countenance
04:00And humble look
04:02Who did not refuse to be falsely accused
04:05And to suffer many injuries
04:09Give me grace never to say an untrue word
04:11Or to falsely accuse my neighbour
04:14But that I may bear with all quietness of heart
04:17The calumnies that are heaped upon me
04:21Casting all my troubles upon you
04:23May I always, in silence
04:25Look for the grave and consolation
04:28At your hands
04:32Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
04:35Who, when Caiaphas the High Priest
04:38Adjured you by the name of God
04:41Declared the truth
04:42And proclaimed yourself the Son of God
04:44And did not refuse to be counted by him
04:47And the rest who stood by as a blasphemer
04:50May I fully abhor this contempt
04:53And defence against you
04:54May I, in every place
04:57Reverence the presence of your divinity and majesty
05:03May I think of you
05:04Adore, praise and love you
05:07Above all things
05:08Forever and forever
05:11Amen
05:15O Lord, open our lips
05:17And our mouths shall sing your praise
05:27O be joyful in the Lord
05:31O be glad
05:33Turn the Lord with gladness
05:37And come in all his prayers
05:40And deliver us on
05:43Be sure that the Lord
05:47He is God
05:49Which is he that hath made us
05:53And lost we ourselves
05:55We are his people
05:58And the sheep of his pasture
06:01Who do your way
06:05Who do your ways
06:05To his peace with thanks
06:07And into his arms with praise
06:13Be thankful to him
06:17And speak to the Lord
06:20Of his name
06:21O the Lord is gracious
06:25His mercy is everlasting
06:31And his truth and joyeth
06:35From generation to generation
06:45Glory be to the Father
06:48And to the Son
06:52And to the Holy Ghost
06:56As it was in the beginning
07:00His love and ever shall be
07:05World without end
07:13Amen
07:23Help me Lord
07:26For there is not one God
07:30They've had a land
07:32For the faithful of his
07:36Come on
07:37The children of men
07:41They took of vanity
07:44Everyone with his name
07:48They do but clatter with their lips
07:52And his seven
07:55In their double heart
07:58The Lord shall put out all
08:03His fee for his
08:05And the tongue that speaketh
08:09From his
08:11Which has said
08:14Without some will we fear it
08:19We are there that ought to speak
08:22Who is Lord over us
08:27Not for the comfortless job
08:31Who's sake of the need
08:34And because of the desire
08:40Of the fruit
08:43I will upset the Lord
08:47And will help everyone from him
08:51That sweareth against him
08:54And will stay to him as rest
08:58No words of the Lord are pure words
09:04Neven as the silver
09:07Which from the earth is right
09:10And glorified seven times in the fire
09:16Thou shalt keep him alone
09:21Thou shalt preserve him
09:25On his generation forever
09:29He and does he walk on every side
09:35When they are exalted
09:39The children of men
09:42Are brought to you
09:50Glory to the Lord
09:54Glory to the Son
09:56And to the Son
09:57And to the Holy Ghost
10:02As it was in the beginning
10:05Is now and ever shall be
10:13World without him
10:16Amen
10:31A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke
10:34Chapter 1
10:38The time came for Elizabeth
10:40To have her baby
10:41And she gave birth to her son
10:44Her neighbours and relatives heard
10:46That the Lord had shown great mercy to her
10:48And they rejoiced with her
10:52On the eighth day
10:53They came to circumcise the child
10:54And they wanted to name him
10:56Zechariah
10:57After his father
10:59But his mother replied
11:00No
11:00He must be named
11:02John
11:04They said to her
11:05But none of your relatives
11:07Bears this name
11:09And so they made signs
11:10To the baby's father
11:11Inquiring what he wanted
11:13To name his son
11:16He asked for a writing tablet
11:18And wrote
11:19His name is John
11:22They were all amazed
11:23Immediately Zechariah's mouth
11:26Was opened
11:26His tongue released
11:27And he spoke
11:28Blessing God
11:30All their neighbours
11:31Were filled with fear
11:32And throughout the entire
11:33Hill country of Judea
11:34All these things
11:35Were talked about
11:37All who heard these things
11:39Kept them in their hearts
11:41Saying
11:41What then will this child be
11:44For the Lord's hand
11:45Was indeed upon him
11:48Then his father Zechariah
11:50Was filled with the Holy Spirit
11:51And prophesied
11:53Blessed be the Lord God of Israel
11:55Because he has come to help
11:57And has redeemed his people
11:59For he has raised up
12:01A horn of salvation for us
12:02In the house of his servant David
12:05As he spoke through the mouth
12:07Of the holy prophets
12:08From long ago
12:09That we should be saved
12:10From our enemies
12:11And from the hand
12:12Of all who hate us
12:14He has done this
12:15To show mercy to our ancestors
12:17And to remember
12:18His holy covenant
12:19The oath that he swore
12:21To our ancestor Abraham
12:24This oath grants that we
12:25Being rescued from the hand
12:27Of our enemies
12:28May serve him without fear
12:29In holiness and righteousness
12:31Before him
12:32For as long as we live
12:36You child
12:37Will be called the prophet
12:38Of the Most High
12:39For you will go before the Lord
12:41To prepare his ways
12:42To give his people
12:44Knowledge of salvation
12:45Through the forgiveness
12:46Of their sins
12:49Because of our God's tender mercy
12:51The dawn will break upon us
12:53From on high
12:54To give light to those
12:55Who sit in darkness
12:56And in the shadow of death
12:58To guide our feet
13:00Into the way of peace
13:04This is the word of the Lord
13:07Thanks be to God
13:17As promised
13:18Elizabeth finally gave birth
13:20An immense
13:21Remarkable
13:22By virtue
13:22Of her advanced years
13:25Again we see
13:26An example of obedience
13:27For while traditionally
13:29Children were named
13:30After their ancestors
13:32But in this case
13:33It was decided
13:34That the baby
13:34Would be named
13:35John
13:37More raised eyebrows
13:42When John was born
13:43His mother's heart
13:44Was filled with great joy
13:45And her neighbours
13:46Rejoiced with her
13:48And when their little child
13:49A week old
13:50Was introduced
13:51Into the Jewish commonwealth
13:52A feeling of awe
13:54Filled the hearts
13:55Of those priests
13:56And there was much
13:57Wonderment concerning him
14:00Fear came upon them all
14:01And everyone was asking
14:02What manner of child
14:04Shall this be
14:07No doubt
14:08The exceptional character
14:10Of the circumstances
14:11Attending his birth
14:12And his circumcision
14:14Accounted for the joy
14:15But also for the fear
14:17For apart from all
14:19That was unusual
14:20There was reason enough
14:21For both sentiments
14:22To be felt and shown
14:24At any ordinary
14:26Human birth
14:26There is an occasion
14:28For hopefulness
14:30And gladness of heart
14:33The mother remembers
14:35No more her pain
14:36And anguish
14:36For joy that a man
14:38Is born into the world
14:39Said our Lord
14:40In John chapter 16
14:42And why rejoice
14:44On this particular occasion?
14:46Because of the love
14:47Which the little child
14:48Will cherish
14:50No, not indeed
14:51To be manifested
14:52In its earliest days
14:53To be felt and shown
14:55But to be felt and shown
14:56Before long
14:57The beautiful
14:58Clinging
14:59Wholehearted
15:00Love of childhood
15:01A love
15:02Which it is fair to see
15:03And most precious
15:04To receive
15:06The love
15:07Which the little child
15:08Will call for
15:08The love
15:09Which is parental
15:10And fraternal
15:11The love of those
15:13Who serve well
15:14As kindred
15:15And friends
15:17This too
15:18Is one of the most
15:19Goodly sights
15:19In the eye of purity
15:21And wisdom
15:23It is one of the
15:24Sweetest and most
15:24Wholesome ingredients
15:25In a whole cup
15:26Of earthly good
15:30The discipline
15:31Which the coming
15:31Of the child
15:32Will involve
15:34All parents
15:35Have an invaluable
15:36Privilege
15:37From which they ought
15:37To derive
15:38The greatest possible
15:39Benefit
15:41They may be slow
15:42To learn
15:42So unimpressionable
15:43So obdurate
15:45That they are none
15:46The wiser or better
15:47For being parents
15:48And in that case
15:49There will be something
15:50Or even much worse
15:54But if the little child
15:55Does not lead us
15:56It is our own fault
15:57And our folly
15:59The child's dependency
16:00On his parents
16:02Trustfulness in his parents
16:03Obedience to his parents
16:05Do these not speak
16:07Eloquently
16:08Of our own dependence
16:09Of bond
16:10And our trustfulness
16:11And our obedience
16:12To our heavenly father
16:15The love we feel
16:17For our little child
16:18The care we take
16:19Of him
16:20The profound regret
16:21We should feel
16:22If he went astray
16:23The sacrifice
16:25We are ready to make
16:26For his recovery
16:27Does not all this
16:29Summon us
16:29With touching
16:30Or even thrilling voice
16:32To realise
16:33The love of God
16:34For us
16:35His human children
16:37The care he has
16:38Taken of us
16:39Day and night
16:39Through all our years
16:41The profound
16:42Divine regret
16:43With which he has
16:45Seen us go astray
16:46From himself
16:47And the wonderful
16:48Sacrifice he made
16:49For us
16:50When he spared
16:51When he spared not
16:51His own son
16:52But delivered him
16:53Up for all
16:54In order to restore
16:56Us to himself
16:57And restate in status
16:59In our heritage
17:02Of the labour
17:03We are necessitated
17:05To bestow
17:05The patience to exercise
17:07The self-denial
17:09And sacrifice to Shem
17:10These are essential factors
17:12In the forming
17:13Of our character
17:15We may not choose them
17:16But we may well
17:18Be most thankful
17:18For them
17:21Of the excellency
17:23To which the child
17:24May attain
17:25Be it
17:26Physical beauty
17:28Or intellectual ability
17:29Or spiritual worth
17:31Or value to service
17:35Who can tell
17:36What lies latent
17:37In that helpless infant
17:38What sources of power
17:39And blessing
17:40Are in that little cradle
17:45It may well be
17:46That fear comes
17:47On all those
17:47Who hold their own
17:48Children in their arms
17:49For they are entrusted
17:51With a little child
17:52And receive
17:54With that
17:55A most grave responsibility
17:58It is true
17:59That nothing can remove
18:00The accountableness
18:01Of each soul
18:03To its creator
18:04From what has become
18:06But it is also true
18:08That parents
18:09Are the most seriously
18:10Responsible
18:11For the character
18:12And career
18:12Of their children
18:14Our children
18:15Will believe
18:16What we teach them
18:16Will form the habits
18:18In which we train
18:19Will follow the example
18:20We set them
18:21Will imbibe
18:22The spirit
18:23Which we are breathing
18:24In their presence
18:25What shall this child be
18:30That depends upon ourselves
18:33If we are only true
18:34And wise
18:35And kind
18:36Our children
18:37Will almost certainly
18:38Become what we ourselves are
18:40What we long
18:41And pray that they may be
18:44Joy and awe
18:45Are therefore
18:46The two appropriate sentiments
18:48At every human birth
18:51When the child
18:52Is born into the home
18:53There enters that
18:54Which may be the source
18:55Of the greatest gladness
18:56To the heart
18:58There also enters
18:59That which should make life
19:01A far more serious
19:02And a solemn thing
19:07After the account
19:08Of the birth
19:08And the naming of John
19:09We have the wonderful testimony
19:11Of Zechariah
19:12His father
19:13After his tongue
19:14Was freed
19:14And he was filled
19:15For the Holy Spirit
19:17To the child
19:18And to all those
19:19Within range
19:20He proclaimed
19:21John's mission
19:22That he was to go
19:23Before the Messiah
19:25Proclaiming his arrival
19:26And making ready
19:27The path for him
19:32It is possible
19:33That the young John
19:34Was going to go on
19:35To become a bit of a handful
19:37For we learn
19:38That he preferred
19:38To be outside
19:40Probably wandering
19:41Far from home
19:43And when he was older
19:44He became of course
19:45The voice in the wilderness
19:47Not for him
19:48The easy way
19:49Nor indeed
19:50For his parents
19:51But the steely
19:52Determination to live
19:53Only according
19:55To the will of God
19:59Once John
20:00Had been circumcised
20:01We read that
20:02The Holy Spirit
20:02Descended upon his father
20:03Zechariah
20:04And that he began
20:06To give a great prophecy
20:07Concerning his son
20:08And the Messiah
20:09Who would shortly
20:11Follow him
20:12In this simple event
20:14We can see
20:15The forgiveness of God
20:16For Zechariah
20:17Had been mute
20:18Since he learnt
20:19Of his wife's
20:20Forthcoming pregnancy
20:21As a result
20:23Of his unbelief
20:25No longer mute
20:26But not only that
20:27But very
20:28And most certainly
20:29Vocal
20:31He blesses God
20:32For what he has done
20:33For his people
20:34And for what was
20:35About to come
20:37Indeed
20:38These words
20:38Were so very strong
20:40That they are
20:42Less of a prophecy
20:42Rather than
20:43A news bulletin
20:44For they proclaim
20:45In the birth of John
20:46What is to come
20:48Directly
20:49And also
20:49Through the birth
20:50Of Jesus
20:51In just a few weeks
20:52Time
20:54When he speaks
20:55Of God
20:55It is interesting
20:56To note
20:57That he generally
20:58Speaks
20:58In the past tense
21:00Only moving
21:01To the future tense
21:02Toward the end
21:03Of the passage
21:05Not only
21:06Through the coming
21:07Of the Messiah
21:07Is God about
21:08To visit
21:09With his people
21:09Rather than
21:11Merely sending
21:11Prophet after prophet
21:12To spread his words
21:13But he will
21:15Bring about
21:15Their redemption
21:18John would go forth
21:19Spreading the call
21:20To repent
21:20But the Messiah
21:22Would grant salvation
21:23To those who
21:24Beg forgiveness
21:25For their wickedness
21:27Through this salvation
21:28Through the tender
21:29Loving mercy of God
21:31A light will shine out
21:32Across the land
21:33To all the people
21:34To see
21:35Giving hope
21:36To all who are
21:38Surrounded by the
21:38Darkness of this world
21:39And granting them
21:40Peace in the next
21:47Let us pray
21:50Almighty and everlasting
21:51God
