00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ,
00:28who your faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were
00:34persecuting you and conspiring against your life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart all evil love

12:00On that day, when the evening had come, he said to them, Let us go over to the other side,
12:06and going away from the people, they took him with him, as he was in the boat.

12:15A great storm of wind came up, and the waves came into the boat, so that the boat was now
12:20becoming full.
12:22Jesus was in the back of the boat, asleep on the cushion, and they, awaking him, said, Master, is it
12:30nothing to you that we are in danger of destruction?
12:34He came out of his sleep, and gave orders to the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be at
12:40rest.
12:42The wind went down, and there was a great calm.
12:47Then he said to them, Why are you so full of fear? Have you still no fear?
12:55Their fear was great, and they said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the
13:01sea do his bidding?
13:04And so they came to the other side of the lake, to the region of the Gerasenes.
13:10But just as Jesus was getting out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came from the tombs,
13:16and met him.
13:18He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.
13:24For his hands and feet had often been bound with chains and shackles, but he had torn the chains apart,
13:30and broken the shackles in pieces.
13:34No one was strong enough to subdue him.
13:37Each night and every day amongst the tombs and in the mountains, he would cry out, and cut himself with
13:44stones.
13:46When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him.
13:52Then he cried out with a loud voice, Leave me alone, Jesus, Son of the Most High God.
14:00I implore you by God, do not torment me.
14:05For Jesus had said to him, Come out of that man, you unclean spirit.
14:13Jesus asked him, What is your name?
14:17He said, My name is Legion, for we are many.
14:23He begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of the region.
14:30There on the hillside a great herd of pigs was feeding.
14:34The demonic spirits begged him, Send us into the pigs, let us enter them.
14:40Jesus gave them permission.
14:42And so the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs.
14:47Then the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake, and about two thousand were droned in the lake.
14:55Now the herdsmen ran off and spread the news in the town and the countryside, and the people went out
15:01to see what had happened.
15:04They came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the one
15:11who had had the legion, and they were aflame.
15:16Those who had seen it also reported it, and they also told about the pigs, and they asked Jesus to
15:24leave their region.
15:28As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed asked if he could go with
15:33him.
15:34But Jesus did not permit him to do so.
15:37Instead, he said to him, Go to your home and to your people, and tell them what the Lord has
15:42done for you, that he had mercy on you.
15:46And so he went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him, and all
15:54were amazed.
15:57This is the word of the Lord.
16:00Thanks be to God.
16:06For the disciples, it had been an action-packed 24 hours.
16:13After a long day, instead of being allowed to rest, Jesus insists on taking the boat to the other side
16:19of the sea.
16:21But during the night, there is a huge storm, and they fear for their lives.
16:28There are often times in our lives when we find ourselves in true fear.
16:34I have known several in my life, including riding out a hurricane at sea.
16:40And I am sure we have at all, at some time, had a nightmare that seems very real, and leaves
16:46us awake, trembling in a cold sweat.
16:52At these times, Jesus rebukes us gently.
16:57Have we no faith?
17:00Will he allow us to perish on the sea, and suffer eternal damnation?
17:05No, of course not.
17:07What do we have to fear, if we believe that Jesus is our Lord?
17:12Did the disciples have such little faith, that they thought they would all perish, along with Jesus himself?
17:21But there is a comforting thought here, though.
17:24It's okay to be afraid.
17:28What greater role model can we have than the disciples, and if they were afraid?
17:33Then we should not be ashamed when we are afraid ourselves.
17:37But we should also remember that we too have Jesus at our side, and he will see to it that
17:43we suffer no lasting harm.
17:49Jesus had crossed the lake in the storm during the night, and now it was morning, and the far side
17:55of the lake had been reached.
17:57Waiting to greet the disciples with their master was a man called Legion, a man possessed of as foul and
18:04strong a set of evil spirits as could be found.
18:07But we are given a detailed description of his condition.
18:13This was not merely a man possessed of a dark depression, but strong, completely raving mad and totally out of
18:21control.
18:24The first thing that we notice is the immediate recognition of Jesus as the Son of God.
18:30There was no need for the evil spirits to ask by what authority it was they were to be tormented,
18:37for they already knew and recognized it was up against their nebuses.
18:44Secondly, we learn that there was more than one evil spirit.
18:47Jesus asked the name of the evil spirit, and was told that there were many.
18:52And from this point on, the gospel refers to the evil spirit in the plural.
18:58This was not just a man possessed, this was a man totally torn apart by a multitude of evil spirits.
19:06Thirdly, he lived in the tombs, in the caves outside the town, in a place where he would permanently be
19:14defiled by contact with the dead,
19:16and also isolated from other human contact.
19:21If you live in isolation, in a wasteland, you will give the devil a huge advantage.
19:29Read Ecclesiastes 4, 8 and onwards.
19:35For you are deprived of loving fellowship and support of your fellow believers,
19:40and it becomes easy for the devil to play his mind games with you.
19:47Consider also the reverence with which the possessed man approached Jesus.
19:53This man, who was normally berserk and totally out of control, is suddenly calm and respectful.
20:00For he knows that he is already beaten.
20:04Instead of raving, he kneels before Jesus,
20:09and the evil spirits plead not to be driven from the region,
20:12but that they may be sent into the pits instead.
20:19The fact that the evil spirits called themselves legion is also worth noting.
20:24For it is a term used by the Romans to describe a fighting force of about twelve and a half
20:30thousand men.
20:32That is not to say that there were this many evil spirits in this one man,
20:37but there were sufficient to finish off a herd of some two thousand pigs.
20:43The point is that the forces of the devil are organised,
20:48perhaps not as a military force as such,
20:51but are certainly organised and effective,
20:54and ranged against us at all times.
20:58On our own, we cannot possibly hope to fight them off,
21:02but together with the power of the Holy Spirit and the love of the Lord Jesus Christ,
21:06the victory is guaranteed to be ours.
21:12So why did Jesus allow the evil spirits to enter into the pits?
21:18The most likely reason was to show the people of the region
21:21both the power of the devil and also his own power over the devil.
21:27This was an area of apostate Jews,
21:31Jews with little or no faith,
21:33and thereby allowing the devil to work his mischief in their midst.
21:39Consider, for example,
21:41why there would have been a herd of pigs
21:45in a Jewish area.
21:48The very fact that there were pigs in the vicinity
21:50shows their lack of respect to the law
21:53and their little faith.
21:58This, perhaps, was the reason the spirits wished to remain in the area,
22:02because it would have been an area of such rich pickings for them.
22:07Because of what happened to the pigs,
22:09as much as anything,
22:10the word spread through the region like wildfire,
22:13frightening the local inhabitants,
22:16that they begged Jesus to leave them immediately.
22:21So what can we draw from this passage?
22:25First, that the devil is both powerful
22:27and a credible threat to all those who love Christ.
22:33Secondly,
22:34that we must at all times protect ourselves from his attacks,
22:37by prayer and by participating in the Eucharist
22:41at every possible opportunity.
22:44Thirdly,
22:45that we must belong to and take an active part in
22:48a charismatic fellowship with Christ,
22:52remembering that even evil spirits pray,
22:56as we read in verses 7 and 12,
22:59so that prayer in itself
23:00does not make us a Christian.
23:08Let us pray.
23:11O God, the protector of all that trust in you,
23:15without whom nothing is strong,
23:17nothing is holy,
23:19increase and multiply upon us your mercy,
23:23that you, being our ruler and guide,
23:25we may so pass through things temporal,
23:28as we finally lose not the things eternal.
23:31Grant this, O Heavenly Father,
23:34for the Jesus Christ's sake,
23:36our Lord.
23:37Amen.
23:43May the Lord bless us
23:44and keep us from all evil,
23:47bringing us to everlasting life.
