03:31who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of any miracle, because he did not have his own

03:49Pour into my heart a spirit of deep humility, mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory.

05:12from Herod the Pilate, and in all things obeyed your enemies going backwards and forwards according to their pleasure.

05:31Give me grace to have no feelings for the things of this world, but to think of and care for
05:37and love you alone.

10:56A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter 17.
11:03Jesus said to his disciples,
11:06Stumbling blocks are sure to come,
11:08but woe to the one through whom they come.
11:11It would be better for him to have a millstone tied around his neck,
11:15and be thrown into the sea,
11:18than for him to be the cause of one of these little ones to sin.
11:22Watch yourselves.
11:23If your brother sins, rebuke him.
11:26If he repents, forgive him.
11:29Even if he sins against you seven times in a day,
11:33and seven times returns to you saying,
11:35I repent,
11:37you must forgive him.
11:41The Apostles said to the Lord,
11:44Increase our faith.
11:46So the Lord replied,
11:48If you had the faith the size of a mustard seed,
11:51you could say to this black mulberry tree,
11:55Be pulled out by the roots,
11:57and be planted in the sea,
11:59and it would obey you.
12:03Would any one of you say to your slave,
12:05who comes in from the field after ploughing or shepherding sheep,
12:09Come at once and sit down for a meal?
12:13Would the master instead say to him,
12:15Get my dinner,
12:16and make yourself ready to serve me while I eat and drink?
12:20Then you may eat and drink.
12:24He won't thank the slave,
12:25because he did what he was told, will he?
12:29So you too,
12:30when you have done everything you are commanded to do,
12:32you should say,
12:33We are slaves and deserving of special praise.
12:37We have only done our duty.
12:42Now on the way to Jerusalem,
12:44Jesus was passing along
12:46between Samaria and Galilee.
12:49As he entered the village,
12:51ten men with leprosy met him.
12:54They stood at the distance,
12:56raised their voices and said,
12:57Jesus, Master,
12:59have mercy on us.
13:01When he saw them,
13:02he said,
13:03Go and show yourselves to the priests.
13:06And as they went along,
13:08they were cleansed.
13:11Then one of them,
13:12when he saw that he was healed,
13:14turned back,
13:15praising God with a loud voice.
13:17He fell with his face to the ground
13:19at Jesus' feet and thanked him.
13:22Now he was a Samaritan.
13:25Then Jesus said,
13:27Well, not ten cleansed.
13:29So where are the other nine?
13:32Was no one found to turn back
13:34and give praise to God
13:35except this foreigner?
13:38Then he said to the man,
13:39Get up and go your way.
13:41Your faith has made you well.
13:45This is the word of the Lord.
13:47Thanks be to God.
13:56I think we can all think
13:57of the stumbling blocks
13:59that we have encountered
14:00during our spiritual walk.
14:04Times when we have been tripped up
14:06by those who were supposed to be friends
14:08and supporting us.
14:11Sometimes these stumbling blocks
14:13can be people from the church itself.
14:16One of mine was a village priest
14:18who told me in no uncertain terms
14:20that I belong to him
14:22to which I was able to reply
14:25No, I belong to him.
14:30Seriously though,
14:31we have to be very careful
14:32that we do not cause our neighbour
14:34or family member to trip and fall
14:36for Jesus was very clear here
14:38that it would place us
14:39in a very difficult position.
14:43If we love our neighbour
14:44as we were commanded
14:46then we absolutely do not want
14:48to undermine their faith in any way.
14:52However, these things happen
14:54unintentionally
14:55hence the warning to us about it.
14:58Take care, Jesus told us.
15:01Try and always be mindful
15:03of our weaker neighbours
15:04and think to provide them
15:07with a good example
15:08without undermining their fragile
15:10and embryonic faith.
15:16We are called to rebuke the sinner
15:18and then if he repents
15:20forgive him
15:21as often as it takes.
15:25This is very hard indeed
15:27and I suspect that for many of us
15:29after a few problems
15:30we would tend to walk away.
15:33But this is wrong
15:34for it is not the message
15:36of the gospel.
15:38We are called to love
15:39forgiving those
15:40who repent
15:41always.
15:44Yes, we should hate the sin
15:46but like the Lord himself
15:48love the sinner
15:50he came to save.
15:53Let us pray the prayer
15:55of the apostles
15:55that our faith
15:57might every day
15:58be strengthened.
16:00Sometimes it is
16:01surely going to take a knock
16:03but with prayerful attention
16:05it will thrive
16:06thrive and flourish.
16:10True humility
16:11can be very hard
16:13to know.
16:14We must remember
16:15always exactly
16:16who we are
16:17and not have overly
16:18inflated ideas
16:19of our own importance.
16:22For even the greatest
16:23among us
16:24is like dirt
16:25compared with God.
16:28The more we have been
16:30accustomed to enjoying
16:31the things of this world
16:32the harder it can be
16:34to renounce
16:34their pleasures.
16:37Jesus
16:38had a simple message
16:39for his disciples
16:40in this episode
16:41which Luke reported
16:43for us.
16:45Only the person
16:46who works over
16:47and above the extent
16:48of his duty
16:48can expect a reward.
16:51That is not to say
16:53that there would never
16:53be a reward
16:54for long and loyal
16:55service however
16:57but we need to remember
16:58that we are paid
16:59to do our duty
17:00and we should not
17:02expect more than that.
17:04Yes, it is true
17:06it is nice to have
17:07a pat on the back
17:08after 40 years of work
17:09and receive a small gift
17:11from a grateful employer.
17:14But we need to accept
17:15that we have been paid
17:17throughout those 40 years
17:18and we are not entitled
17:20to more than this.
17:24Instead,
17:25we should be humble
17:25and remember
17:26that we are only
17:27doing our duty.
17:29As Christians
17:30our duty is boundless
17:32for we cannot say
17:33I have saved a soul
17:35my duty is done
17:36or I have preached
17:3750 servants
17:38my duty is done.
17:41Not at all.
17:42It is our duty
17:43to go on doing
17:44these things
17:44until the very last
17:46possible moment.
17:48The Christian says
17:49as long as I have
17:51wind in my lungs
17:52I will preach
17:53for the Lord.
17:58The Jews associated
17:59leprosy with sin
18:01being a punishment
18:02from God
18:03and we have the precedent
18:04of the punishment
18:05given to Miriam
18:06for speaking against
18:07Moses in Numbers 12
18:09as an example.
18:11It was only natural
18:12that Jesus
18:13who came to take away
18:14the sins of the world
18:15should seek out
18:16the leprous
18:17and heal them.
18:20Approaching the village
18:21for the lepers
18:22were not allowed
18:23inside the village
18:24itself
18:24but had to remain
18:25at the gate.
18:26We read the ten
18:27called out to Jesus
18:28asking for his mercy.
18:31Nedio tired
18:32from his journey
18:33for he was in
18:34a mountain region
18:35on the borders
18:36of Galilee and Samaria.
18:38It would have been
18:39easy for him
18:40to wait
18:40for him to tell them
18:42to wait
18:42until he had eaten
18:43and had rested.
18:45But that was not
18:46his way.
18:47Though tired
18:49thirsty
18:50and hungry
18:50he stopped
18:52to attend
18:52to their needs.
18:55They were told
18:55to go and present
18:56themselves to the priest
18:57in accordance
18:58with the law
18:59of Leviticus 13 and 14
19:02being healed
19:03as they went.
19:06In much the same way
19:07that Naaman
19:08was told
19:09to go and wash
19:10in the Jordan
19:10in 2 Kings 5
19:12the lepers
19:13were required
19:13to take a step
19:14of faith
19:14for themselves
19:16and do something
19:17to be made clean.
19:21There was however
19:22a small twist
19:23in this account
19:24for of the ten
19:25that were presumably
19:26pronounced clean
19:27by the priest
19:28only one
19:29saw fit
19:29to go back
19:30to Jesus
19:31and to thank him.
19:33More tellingly
19:34the one
19:34who went back
19:35to Jesus
19:35was a Samarian
19:38the one
19:38who was despised
19:39by the Jews
19:41giving rise
19:41to Jesus
19:42referring to him
19:43as a follower.
19:46We can sit
19:47in judgment
19:47of the other nine
19:48but are we not
19:49also like them?
19:51How often
19:52do we pray
19:53and ask for a solution
19:54to a problem
19:54or guidance
19:55and when this comes
19:57forget to give thanks
19:59with the same vigor
20:00that we prayed
20:01in our asking?
20:06We have some
20:07telling words
20:08from Jesus
20:09He told the
20:10returning Samaritan
20:11that his faith
20:12had made him well
20:14Are we to presume
20:16that the others
20:16had their healing
20:17revoked?
20:19Not at all
20:20for there is
20:21absolutely nothing
20:22to suggest this
20:23and there is no
20:24incidence anywhere
20:25in the gospel
20:26of Jesus
20:27ever reversing
20:28a miracle.
20:33The difference
20:33for this man
20:34is not only
20:36was his leprosy
20:37cured
20:37but his faith
20:38made him well.
20:41So what exactly
20:42does this mean?
20:44To resolve this
20:45we need to return
20:46to the Greek
20:47where we find
20:48that the word used
20:49has a primary meaning
20:50of delivered
20:51or saved
20:52and that the healing
20:54aspect
20:54is a secondary
20:55meaning.
20:58We can take it
20:59from this then
21:00that not only
21:01was the leprosy
21:01healed
21:02but the man's
21:03soul was healed
21:04forgiven
21:05and in reconciliation
21:07with God.
21:13Let us pray.
21:16Lord of all
21:17power and might
21:18who is the author
21:19and giver
21:20of all good things
21:22graft in our hearts
21:24the love of your name
21:26increase in us
21:27true religion
21:29nourish us
21:30with all goodness
21:31and of your great mercy
21:33keep us in the same
21:35through Jesus Christ
21:37our Lord
21:37Amen
21:44May the Lord bless us
21:45and keep us
21:46from all evil
21:47bringing us
21:49to everlasting life
21:52Amen
