00:00On the Browns front, we do have the joint practices tomorrow.
00:04You asked Ashley Bastock this, and she gave you a good question.
00:06She was like, that's a great question.
00:08It doesn't mean she wanted to think about it.
00:10It doesn't mean it's a great question.
00:11Or it was a great question.
00:12Take the damn compliment.
00:14That's the second time that I don't mean to sound as harsh as I sound.
00:17It's okay.
00:17All the other times.
00:18It's the theme of the day for myself.
00:20Everyone's getting after me today.
00:22We showed up.
00:23We showed up, just wanted to put the hard hat on and do work, Nick.
00:25That's all we showed up wanting to do today.
00:28It's just shots from every direction.
00:30But you had asked the question, is the Browns offense getting dominated
00:33or the defense getting dominated tomorrow a bigger concern?
00:37I think Ashley's take on this, which is if the defense struggles,
00:41that's going to be a real concern, and I second that.
00:44I third that then, because the defense looking bad would be the type of thing
00:50that would take a lot of the wind projections,
00:52even though so much of football is geared towards the offensive side of the ball.
00:55But the Browns almost look at, and Browns fans, I feel like,
00:58almost look at the defensive side as if it's a guarantee.
01:01If you have Rutenberg and now no Jim Schwartz,
01:05and this thing starts to stumble, and you look bad against Josh Allen,
01:08it's Josh Allen.
01:08He's going to make you look bad at certain spots.
01:11But it'll be night and day relative to, oh,
01:13your defense was stopping Deshaun Watson for a lot of the camp.
01:16Congratulations.
01:17I think the thing that we kind of ignored,
01:20because we talked so much to the quarterbacks from the Browns-Bears game,
01:24was just how bad the defense looked.
01:26By the lack of depth in so many spots, too.
01:28I think that was really highlighted.
01:29Yeah, well, it's just, they kind of didn't play with the intensity we're used to,
01:35but certainly, I mean, being without your cornerbacks was not helping you,
01:39and that's part of why he got cooked.
01:40No Schwessinger as well.
01:41No Schwessinger.
01:42Still felt bad for that caller I had to break that news to.
01:44Was Carson Schwessinger back at practice today?
01:46I know he had missed like 10 straight practices at some point.
01:48He missed yesterday.
01:49I'm not sure about today.
01:49I just assumed he didn't do today because he missed yesterday.
01:52But I do think, like, I expect the Browns' offense to be a work in progress.
01:58Potentially all season, but certainly the first four to eight games of the season,
02:02I need the defense to hit the ground running,
02:04because it's going to be tough to not immediately look at Mike Rutenberg
02:10and go, what the hell are you doing?
02:11Now, one thing on the offensive side, if I was to play devil's advocate on this,
02:14because I agree with you, I think defense has got to be the answer here,
02:17and we're going to have a lot of conversations about the defense,
02:19and Josh Allen's a great test for that.
02:21If the offense can't do anything against the Bills' offense,
02:24and I'm talking more about some of the guys that we think are just automatic playmakers,
02:28Concepcion, Boston, some of the young rookie wide receivers
02:31that we just think are going to make plays against anybody,
02:32if they get shut down, that'll be interesting as well.
02:37216-474-0092.
02:38What's a bigger concern for tomorrow,
02:40the Browns' offense getting dominated by the Bills
02:42or the defense getting cooked by the Bills?
02:44I mean, isn't the expectation on the offensive side of the ball
02:47for the quarterbacks to kind of fall flat on their face tomorrow?
02:49Yeah, I mean, that's certainly what everyone in Berea said they did today.
02:52They did today.
02:52We've seen multiple practices where they continue to do so,
02:55and so I think that's got to be it.
02:57Even the Bills' defense isn't the world's greatest defense.
03:00The Browns' defense should be a better defense than what the Bills' defense is,
03:04but that should be the expectation.
03:05Now, Coach Bunkett today, before practice, trying to get that straight,
03:10talked about how quarterback reps will be divided in joint practice tomorrow.
03:14Well, we're going to divide the reps.
03:16So we're going to go 10 plays with the 1s and 2s,
03:197 plays with the 2s and 3s.
03:21That'll be rundowns, pass downs, and red zone.
03:23So we're going to give each quarterback 5 of those reps.
03:27I don't know right now what plays I've scripted.
03:30You know what I'm saying?
03:30It's not like I knew that Deshaun was getting these or Shador was getting that.
03:34I don't know that.
03:35I mean, it falls where it is.
03:37So that was actually from the coach's show yesterday.
03:39He said the same thing today, too, though,
03:42where he listed out by the reps exactly what he was going to do.
03:44It's interesting.
03:45Again, I think the way they're going to split the reps kind of tells you,
03:49yeah, they want to make sure they're getting Deshaun ready,
03:52and then, hey, Shador, here's your five reps per.
03:56I still don't like this.
03:57I still just don't like this.
03:59I think Shador should be going against the 1s.
04:01It's obvious that the practice is more important than the game is on Saturday,
04:07and I really just don't like this at all.
04:10I also don't like that it's only 10 reps in total with the 1s.
04:13Yeah.
04:14I don't know why.
04:14It feels like a very minuscule practice.
04:16Oh, my God, so tiny.
04:17We make such a big deal out of these joint practices,
04:19and in reality, especially when you have a split competition now,
04:22we're supposed to freak out over five plays from each end.
04:25And by the way, within this, two of them will be handoffs.
04:28Or legitimately, we'll have three Shador Sanders throws against the 1s
04:32and three Deshaun Watson throws against the 1s.
04:34Maybe he's got a chance to take the job step.
04:36And hell, if Munkin really wants to rig this whole entire thing
04:38and making sure nobody looks bad,
04:39maybe it's like four runs for Deshaun Watson in one pass,
04:42and it could be just a nice little simple pass and nothing to it.
04:45Let's go with Jack in Florida.
04:46Welcome to the show, Jack.
04:48What's up, guys?
04:49I just wanted to bit with you guys and say,
04:52are you guys also sick of people giving the popular opinion
04:56but then acting like it's fact?
04:58Like, what I'm talking about is people keep saying
05:01that it'll be easier to go from Deshaun to Sanders.
05:06I think that's like a fan decision.
05:08I know the team says they're not making fan decisions,
05:10but to me, when I hear that, I say, okay, Deshaun goes out there.
05:14If he plays poorly, we can bring Sanders in.
05:16He'll buy us some goodwill, and we can kind of coast off
05:18for as long as we can coast with him.
05:20But I think that's not a good football decision.
05:23I think it's the opposite.
05:24Like, if it was me, I'm going to put the young guy out there,
05:28tell him to hit the gas, and if it doesn't work out,
05:30well, you saw what you needed to see with the guy you thought could be the future.
05:33Oh, be careful, Jack.
05:34Rhetoric like that, you're going to be labeled in the 3% of crazies.
05:37I might be.
05:38I might be.
05:38But here's the thing.
05:39If you go with Deshaun first, I just don't think it's –
05:42like, if you say, hey, we're going to put Deshaun out there,
05:44and he goes one in five,
05:47then you're bringing your second-year quarterback into a demoralized team,
05:51and then he knows he's playing for his future.
05:53He's like, my career might be here.
05:54This might be it.
05:56And then it's like already you're one in five.
06:00The fan base is going to be like, oh, well, we want you to lose
06:03because we're looking for a quarterback.
06:04I just think it's a real high-pressure situation for like a second-year
06:08quarterback versus a vet who's going to be out of here anyway.
06:10If it doesn't work out, well, hey, man, we paid you $200 million.
06:13This is the job.
06:15Take the money.
06:15Goodbye.
06:16Jack, I think you're on to something about kind of the general cliches.
06:20We appreciate you, bud.
06:21This is like when the narrative out there that Deshaun is the safer choice
06:26for week one because he's a veteran.
06:28I understand the cliché, and it's a cliché for a reason.
06:32I do.
06:33The problem is the cliché does not fit when your veteran quarterback is Deshaun.
06:39And I know for some reason – I know for some people they'll say,
06:41well, the cliché does fit because the other quarterback is Shador.
06:46Well, one of those two quarterbacks has played better football
06:49in the last five years, and it is Shador Sanders.
06:51The other part of this that I'd like to knock down like a bowling pin here
06:54is the idea that everyone's like, oh, Deshaun can't possibly back up
06:58Shador Sanders.
06:59That no world is – he has no choice, guys.
07:02It's either back up Shador Sanders.
07:04You're going to give back his money?
07:05Yeah, back up Shador Sanders or give back the money.
07:07I mean, you have no option.
07:09You'd sit there, you'd hold the clipboard, and you'd be a good sport about it.
07:12And then, I mean, you either wait until Shador couldn't get the job done
07:15and they go to you, or Shador has the job for 17 games,
07:18and then, boom, time's run out.
07:19Your career's over.
07:20It is what it is.
07:21But if he wants to play football ever again,
07:23this is the only road map Deshaun Watson has.
07:25He has to sit there and play back up.
