00:00Todd Munkin today in his media availability did say after practice he was going to tell
00:05whoever's going to start on Saturday that they were in fact the starter and talk to both
00:09quarterbacks about this. Yeah, we've got no whispers by the way yet on who exactly he's
00:13told that to because practice has been done for a while. That's actually the biggest surprise
00:16about this is that practice has been over for two full hours now because it wrapped up early
00:21today about 3.20, 3.25 because we saw the storms are coming and I'm surprised that this hasn't
00:28come out. I think when we're talking about a pre-show like this feels like something that
00:32Browns are going to want to get out as soon as humanly possible. It's also not something you
00:36really have to safe keep. It's a catch the catch the the Bears off guard like it's a preseason game
00:42and the Bears don't care if it's Deshaun Watson or Shador Sanders that's playing. I understand
00:47wanting to do it after the practice and feel like all right, I want to I want to make a
00:51big deal
00:51about it or I want to I want to make sure that I at least entertain what this practice could
00:56mean
00:56before I tell the player I whatever whatever reason you want to do it. I'm fine with you doing
01:01it after practice, but this is not a secret that we have to have lock and key up at Fort
01:05Knox. I
01:06think what's interesting about this Saturday is I've gone back and forth about what the game actually
01:12means for Deshaun specifically because I do think for a lot of people Deshaun going out there for a half
01:20of football and playing well is going to and there's already enough buy-in like there is more
01:26buy-in on Deshaun as a starter this year than I really thought there was ever going to be
01:30I know at least from the media perspective so I can I can see the you'd see the tangible upside

01:36a good half of football for Deshaun on Saturday if he is in fact the starter what I don't really

01:43and what I've really debated a lot internally since I heard him talk earlier today is what if
01:49he just goes out there and looks lost isn't that kind of the expectation no no no I expect I'm
01:56expecting him to look lost if if the light has come on the last week I expect to see more

02:19nobody thought that was going to be the the predicted outcome because we hadn't seen that in practice
02:24it just reminds me a lot of what we've seen over the past week and what me and you have

02:28the past couple days where it looks like he's got zip on the ball he actually has some placement in
02:32the past couple days seems like maybe the the tide is turning in the right direction and the bright
02:37lights go on and he's just a different human yeah it's interesting because it's the priest I don't I
02:42just don't it's still bright lights you're up against people that are trying to rip your head
02:47off which is not what's happening out there in Maria he got hit he got hit on a plane nick

02:51yesterday and there was almost a big fight and scrum over it they almost went to blows over it and

02:56just got he just got a little nick it wasn't even like uh he actually got hit yeah I didn't

03:01that was about I I think I actually thought that was a good sign that the offense was going to
03:06stand up for their guy I I know that can feel performative but there have been times where
03:11we've seen whoever the quarterback is you saw then he just he got very he got very lightly
03:16touched and then you saw the ball turn into this like this like a helicopter type ball that was
03:21just spinning up in the air going sideways like an e-fist pitch before it landed on the ground and
03:25it's like I I the big problem I have with Deshaun in this entire thing is and he might just
03:30end up
03:30getting injured that's another part of it but the big problem I have is that his decision making when
03:34other people are trying to actually hurt him is really poor well I I do think and listen I I
03:39have
03:39I've maintained that I am uh relatively biased uh bystander in this I want Shador to start I don't
03:46see the value in Deshaun starting and for him to make this worth it for me the juice has to
03:51be worth
03:51the squeeze he has to be at least uh league average or above they've got to win or he's got
03:57to be
03:57something close to Houston Deshaun right like this him playing the stakes are not as uh the stakes are much
04:04expectations the the threshold that I need met far more significant than with Shador who I just need
04:09to be good enough right because I just I don't have the baggage with Shador all right with Deshaun
04:15but you had said that uh and how this kind of got kicked off here was you're like I I'm
04:19not I'm not
04:20I'm not expecting him to kind of stink up the joint or be lost or anything like that I argued
04:24that I was what what do you expect out of Deshaun when you see him on Saturday if he does

04:29what are your expectations my expectations are he looks like an NFL quarterback and I and I I think
04:35that actually is something like him looking like because again that's what he's looked like we we
04:40can go back to last Tuesday show last Wednesday show where we're like Tuesday was unplayable
04:46unplayable and then it turned around and then Wednesday all of a sudden the guy looks like an
04:50NFL quarterback and everyone went oh that's what an NFL quarterback looks like so that is what I'm
04:56expecting to see he doesn't have to wow me but like I'll be honest with you because I want to

05:01what I'm hearing in practice when I anytime you talk to somebody they say well he's making plays
05:06so I'm okay if he makes negative plays as long as he makes the positive I get what you're saying
05:12I've just I've we've done this too many times where what he's doing in practice doesn't match up to
05:17what happens on the field that's why I'm dying to find out like if Saturday is different and he just
05:21looks like an NFL quarterback at least looks like what we've seen out on the practice field for the past
05:25week now I think that will be a massive stride in showing something that Deshaun Watson can
05:31actually perform week one two three four whatever that would be I think that would be a huge sign
05:36because I'm not expecting it but I think my concern is for you if you're expecting him to look bad
05:44then I there I don't think there's anything that's going to change and not change your mind but anything
05:48that's going to have the arrow pointing up for you on Sunday no I mean it should be an easiest
05:54that my bar is easier to clear than your bar is what's that my my bar is basically don't look
05:59drunk out there and act like you can throw a football and then all of a sudden it's like okay
06:03maybe maybe uh maybe the Deshaun Watson that I'm expecting isn't exactly there and maybe this is a
06:09a different Deshaun that would actually be in the better I I think your standard is actually going
06:13to be harder to please looking like an NFL quarterback I think for Deshaun yeah I think that's going to

06:17harder standard to clear because in a Browns uniform he hasn't looked like that 216 474 009 my bar is
06:24lower than yours on this that's what makes that don't look drunk and look like an NFL quarterback
06:29are a lot closer than I think you think I think we're saying very similar things yours just might
06:37be a little more loaded than mine maybe okay maybe but what does uh Watson have to show on Saturday
06:42after not playing for nearly two years I do think the more interesting thing is if he does look lost
06:51because again like the Browns have done a lot to say oh no no the things you're seeing aren't what
06:57you're seeing you we're not they won't be able to sell that yeah and I think there's a part of

07:02that like I don't know that if Deshaun has a great day on Saturday I don't know it's as simple

07:24interested to find out if the Browns try and if the Browns try to uh sell us on something that
07:29Deshaun isn't which is kind of the vibe we've been getting for a while now you know and that is
07:33interesting you know we talked to Quincy today and and he had nice things to say about both
07:37quarterbacks off and that was off the yeah good point yeah and I genuinely do believe that a lot
07:41of these guys are looking at these quarterbacks and we've asked everyone that's come over and no
07:45one on the air has said anything one way or another I I tend to believe a lot of these
07:49defensive guys
07:49they they don't see a massive difference between the two as is right now and you could sell them on
07:54either one of them so I don't know that one preseason game will necessarily take it out but it will
07:57for a lot
07:58of the fan base so what does Deshaun Watson have to show on Saturday after uh not playing for almost
08:05two years uh from the Shador side if Shador does get the start just I'll take fine you know I

08:18quarterback uh earlier today in his press availability of like what he's seen developmentally
08:24and with Shador he went like four things deep like he talked about uh even the kind of like the
08:30jump in his cadence and the jump in the operational stuff he talked about minimizing the big mistake
08:35right uh taking the check down which is stuff like Lance has said to us Lance Reisland has said to
08:40us
08:40off air um and it was so interesting because then when he came to Deshaun it's like you know he
08:46looks
08:46like a veteran you know what I mean and I I did clock a slight difference in those two things
08:52and I don't
08:52know if that's maybe Todd you know just giving us more because Shador's a younger guy and he's trying
08:57to build him up or whether he just has a slight inkling towards Shador but I I thought that was
09:02really interesting oh you thought that was an inkling towards Shador there oh yeah I did yeah he's he
09:07went he went out of his way to talk about a lot of the things Shador is doing better and
09:11then with
09:11Deshaun it was you know you know he's a he's a vet like yes yes there's he is different he

09:19like a vet I just thought that was him Munkin going to his classic I love veterans and I just
09:24think veterans can do more than young players that's all that's all I look at that as I I don't
09:28know it is what it is but with Shador uh honestly the what I'm expecting out of Shador in a
09:32preseason
09:33game especially if it ends up being the third quarter maybe it's different if it's the the whole
09:37first half third quarters it's so odd you get one quarter and then it just go out there and go

09:41there and be awesome it's like asking a baseball player uh one at bat go ahead and get this done

09:45just not enough cracks at it I expect a couple deep passes at least one deep pass whether that's
09:50Isaiah Bond whether that's one of the new rookies uh in Concepcion or Boston I'm expecting some
09:55wow type play and then the rest can just kind of be whatever it needs to be I just I

10:02it goes against the ones in either game I need them to look like the better quarterback for this to
10:08be an equitable and I know the the Bears and Bills are not the same team so that that it's
10:13a little
10:14unfair what I'm saying here but if Deshaun goes against the ones on Saturday I need him to look
10:19like the best quarterback and the same thing with Shador if he gets the the second starter strike that
10:24and reverse it you know like I I for this quarterback uh thing to have legitimacy today felt like a
10:30momentum day for the offense everyone said hey the defense uh you know they didn't have the best day
10:36today it was the offense both quarterbacks looked good yeah that's kind of what I would like to see
10:42from both guys I'm I'm here for this being a close race it's best for the Browns if somebody took

10:48and ran with it we're running out of time for someone to take it and run with it but I

10:52the Browns really are planning on starting both guys this year if that's the mentality they have
10:57then probably both guys need to look good can you take it and run with it just through the preseason
11:02games and the games alone no no okay in my opinion no but I don't know about them I mean

11:10Shador starts off like he did last year in that Panthers preseason game that had that the Nike sign
11:14that had a million views and everything like that I I'll be interested to see if you combo both games
11:19if let's say Shador looks great in both games and Deshaun looks like a disaster in both it's got to
11:24mean something I know we're not supposed to make a bunch out of the preseason games but it does have
11:28to mean something
